Magic, New Mexico #1

Touch of Frost

Rate this book
Lacey Adams lives in the small town of Magic, New Mexico, where she devotes herself to the animals at her Touch of Magic Animal Shelter. The strange assortment of animals helps heal the pain and loneliness inside her since the death of her husband three years before.

Frost is a Star Ranger. He travels the star systems, bringing intergalactic fugitives to justice. When a maximum-security fugitive escapes from the mining prison, he is sent after him. Only this time, the fugitive has violated a major law… he has traveled to a distant forbidden planet inhabited by a race that has not mastered space travel yet.

Now, he is in a race to find the fugitive before those on the planet known as Earth discover there are not one, but two aliens on their world. Things become complicated when Frost discovers his heart is not as frozen as he thought when a young human female is taken hostage by the fugitive. What he doesn’t anticipate is her unexpected resistance – both to the fugitive and to him.

Frost is forced to make a decision that is guaranteed to put him on the most wanted list when he follows his heart and kidnaps Lacey. He knows that some things are worth the risk. What he doesn’t know is that Lacey has a few secrets of her own.

This story is blend of sci-fi adventure and heartfelt romance that takes place in a quirky town of Magic, New Mexico.

Lacey Adams, is animal shelter owner still healing from personal loss.

Frost, a stoic Star Ranger, lands on Earth in pursuit of a dangerous fugitive.

Nothing groundbreaking, but this story was entertaining. Of course, they jump into bed way too soon.

Lacey is one of those rare, strong kickass FMCs, that we all love.

I really enjoyed this magical town and all of the side characters, they added so much charm to this story. It’s filled with action, humor, and a dash of intrigue.

David Brenin did a good job at the narration of the audiobook.

Star Lord meets Samantha Stephens!

Story/Plot: 📕📗📘📙📔
World building: 🌏🌍🌏🌍🌎
Character development: 🫣🤭🫠😮🥰

The heroine: Lacey - a human female who runs an an animal shelter in the town of Magic New Mexico. She lost her husband three years ago to a bus accident and promised herself she will never fall in love again because it hurts too much.

The Hero: Frost - a Star Ranger, which is basically a space cop. He hunts down prisoners who have escaped from various prisons throughout the Galaxies. He doesn’t really like his job but it pays very well and he has saved up enough to retire to his home planet and never worry about money again. He and his brother built a hotel and casino business over the last 15 years and his plan is to move there.

The Story: The town of Magic New Mexico is a town where magical folks can hide out from the rest of the world. Lacey and her Aunt Topper are two of those people. Lacey has the ability to do telekinesis, teleportation, heightened senses, she can perform magical spells and more. The town is also filled with various magical creatures such as Trolls, ghosts, fairies, shapeshifters, witches and others.

Frost has to take one last job before he can retire and that is to track an escaped convict that he initially put in prison after that convict killed several other Star Rangers and has since killed eight prison guards in his escape. The convict, Taar, crash lands on Earth, which to Frost is a planet in its infancy and is forbidden to space travelers, so he is tasked with getting there, apprehending Taar and leaving without anyone knowing, he is authorized to kill or wipe the minds of any who see him or the reptilian convict.

This book is told in dual points of view and narrated by David Brenin. He is a fine narrator but his voice isn’t deep enough for my liking. Especially for a tall, well built alien Hero. I like a super deep voice but that is just personal preference. Also I will take points of the narration for having only a male narrator when the book is told from both main characters points of view.

I liked the idea of the alien coming to Earth where he thinks he is coming to an undeveloped star system, a planet with primitive people and he ends up meeting a woman who is his fated mate and who turns him into a bunny within the first few minutes of their meeting. I also like that Frost has his own pretty cool abilities which all have to do with ice.

Great!

I first read this book August 29, 2014 and I absolutely loved it. I’ve often thought of reading it again, THEN I ran across it on audible and that settled it. I bought the audio and sat down to enjoy it again. I’ve never really been into alien books, which is strange since I love alien movies. But when I ran across this one in 2014 I decided to give it a chance, and I’m so glad I did. It was sooo magical.

I love, love, loved Topper. When she first showed up, in the first few pages, she had purple eyes, and hair to match, and like Lacey, she “saw” things. I love witchy kinds of books, and this was a whole town of magical people, ghosts, fairies, trolls and shapeshifters. And the characters were just awesome: Joanna, Samantha, Lacey’s sisters. Jonah, Joseph, Lacy’s cousins. Ivanna and Brice, Lacey’s parents. Theo, the dragon sheriff. Dusty the talking pig. Alfred the centuries old fish. Idan, Frost’s asshole brother. Jones Redman and Alice who got exactly what they deserved and Taar, the alien who died very painfully.

I loved it when Lacey turned Frost into a “very fluffy white bunny,” and Taar into a creature the size of an index finger. She had no idea she was dealing with a vicious alien. She thought she had a huge version of Jonah and Joseph’s pet lizard that they’d super-sized, in a spell gone wrong. Taar killed anything in his path so her arguing with him was too funny. She was some kind of magic!

Two things were wrong with this book. 1) The author used the word vagina. Yuck, that’s so doctor-ish. And 2) the last part of chapter 9, was repeated. I was ready for the next paragraph and it started reading what it was just read. Weird!

There was not any sexual tension to speak of but there was explicit sex. The word damn was used a few times and the F-bomb was used 9 times.

This really was a fun and funny read.

Update: 11/14/2018

As good as the other 2 times I read it. Great story, great characters and great sex. Can't ask for more.

CW and Rant: What the hell, SE Smith? This is {generally speaking} a pretty light crazysauce story, so why did you feel the need to kill a Golden Retriever? Yeah, a Golden - the sweetest, dorkiest dogs on the planet. And this one happened to be a lactating mother with pups. There really wasn't a reason for it. If you wanted to let us know that the baddies were one-dimensional bad, you could've done it in many other ways. And if you had to have one of them shoot the dog, couldn't it just be wounded?

I listened to the whole book, wanting one of the witches (or other paranormals) in the area to bring her back. But you just kind of touched on her death briefly (you treated it as pretty meaningless) and then moved on. It's pretty evident that you've never had a Golden in your life. Or any dog, for that matter.

Sorry, but you crossed a line with this. I won't be reading any more of your books and hope that this review scares some readers away from this one.

I found this story to be very enjoyable. I liked both Lacey and Frost and liked their story very much.

Lacey owns an animal shelter in the town of Magic, New Mexico. The whole town in made up of "unusual people" and Lacey is one of those with her magical abilities. Lacey was married to a man she grew up with but he died 3 years ago and she's been alone since.

Frost is an alien (with ice powers) that works as a Star Ranger, aka an interplanetary policeman/bounty hunter. Frost has been in the job for a while and has made lot so money and is ready to retire. He gets pulled into one last job, to pursue a dangerous criminal, Taar, to a primitive planet while making sure not to expose aliens to the local population.

When Taar lands, he heads towards the closest civilization which happens to be Magic and Lacey's house. Taar is a lizard creature and at first, Lacey thinks he's a magical construct made by her twin nephews but soon realizes differently. Thankfully, Lacey's gifts are strong so she's able to protect herself from Taar. Frost shows up to capture Taar but things go a bit wonky when Lacey decides Frost is way too disturbing and makes moves to get him out of her life ASAP.

Frost recognizes Lacey as his fated mate and isn't about to be pushed away. He decides to win her and then kidnap her back to his home planet but things don't go exactly as planned when MiB (Men in Black) come around looking to investigate the possibility of aliens after tracking 2 things coming through the atmosphere that had a controlled trajectory. Things get complicated but while this is all happening, Frost and Lacey get closer and quickly fall for each other. Unfortunately, the MiBs aren't the only issue faced by the couple and even once they settle things with the MiBs, some separate third-party interference causes even more problems for Lacey and Frost. Fortunately, Lacey isn't a wimp and she has a wonderful family town that stand with and help her, allowing things to work out in the end and Lacey and Frost to get their HEA.

This was a very enjoyable story. I really liked Lacey. She was nice but also strong and does what needs to be done to protect those she cares about. Frost was a very good hero and I liked his character very much. Together, they made a good team/couple...I'm glad things turned out the way they did, even if things went wonky to get there. Overall, this was a very good story that was nicely engaging and I'd recommend it. :)

What a fun book! (audible review)

This book was so much fun to listen too. I really liked the alien and the magic going on here. This town was awesome, I want to live there.

I liked all the characters, Lacey was hilarious! I liked that the witches didn't have to get scrying mirror and a bunch of herbs and 3 drops of blood to turn someone into a toad or something. It was great.

I liked Frost too. He was strong, handsome and could wield some ice. LOL
The chemistry between Lacey and Frost was pretty instalust to be honest, but it was still good. There are some sex scenes which were good. So this is not a rated G book.
There was lots of dialogue throughout the entire book. The story line and plot was good. It wasn't a very long book so it was not full of filler moments. The story flowed very well. I am looking forward to the next book in this series.

As for the narration, David Brenin did a fantastic job! I will listen to him again for sure. All the women sound like women, everyone gets their own distinct voice and he reads with emotion and has a nice reading voice.

Too much, just too much. A town full of every mythical and magical being ever thought of - vampires, werewolves, witches, dragons, active ghosts and more. Think of a superhero power and they have it. Teleportation, speaking to the dead, control over the weather, healing abilities, all forms of magical spells.

I prefer my stories to stick to one or two types of paranormal and even then there should be some basic rules. Twin boys who can talk to each other telepathically, ok. Who are werewolf / vampire hybrids. Sure, I guess. Who can shape change to any animal they want (like a mouse to spy), cast spells to make someone grow flowers in their hair.... nope, I just think it moved to the ridiculous.

To top that all off, the combined power of the commu ity can creat a space dimensional portal to another galaxy, instantaneous group travel through that portal, all because a baby in the womb has a genetic connection to her alien father?

Nope, no more for me.

Talk about a quick, simple, fluffy romance that I found enjoyable. Not only is this a sci-fi romance, it's a paranormal one in every sense of the word. In order to enjoy this, you have to suspend all sense of belief, which I did.

This book was funny! Frost, an alien Star Ranger ends up on Earth chasing down a fugitive. Lacey, wants no part of love again and has no time for two aliens. Frost thinks these people are strange and he struggles to understand their magic. The secondary characters really add to the story. My favorites were the twins Jonah and Joseph, The sexy times were hot as well.

Paranormal meets Science Fiction Romance.

Lacey is a witch living in a small town full of paranormal residents. Frost, a Glacian, is a Star Ranger tracking down a lizard like criminal and finds himself in Magic. Frost is going to have to break the rules if he wants to keep Lacey. I like Lacey and Frost and many of the other people from Magic but Jonah & Joseph steal the show!

I'm very curious to know who the Director in Black is. I also wonder what happened with Agent Maxwell.

I'm not sure if or when there will be a crossover with this series and Lords of Kassis but we meet a Glacian in Risteard's Unwilling Empress.

This was an entertaining scifi romance where an interstellar bounty hunter goes after a particularly nasty criminal on a backwater world we know as Earth. however, he ends up in a New Mexico town full of supernaturals and people who do magic. Some of the challenges seemed to be easy for the heroine to overcome, except I guess she was unused to having to defend herself and others to such a degree. The story was easy and light, despite some sad events, and full of some great characters who will be fun to see in future books.

Great beginning to a new series!

I couldn't put this book down. From beginning to end I was entranced. I want to be a resident of Magic, New Mexico. The town's population are varied and unique. The characters are great. I look forward to seeing a good amount of them getting their own book. Frost and Lacey's chemistry is off the charts.

I highly recommend this book to anyone who loves a outstanding paranormal romance.

So S.E. Smith is one of my all-time favorite writers. There's just something about a writing that pulls you in and never lets go. Also David Brenin he's a phenomenal narrator.

I have been hesitant to start the series because Susan stated that this book takes place on Earth. I love all her sci-fi books and since this book only has magic and is based on Earth I don't know what to think. I enjoy a good Sci-Fi romance book and the fact that this book is strictly based on Earth made me a bit weary. But of course I did not need to be worried because she killed this book as she does all her others.

Frost is a space Bounty Hunter and he is tasked to bring a serial killer to justice, by death. I love the reaction that Lacey had when she first met Frost. She was not scared or freaked out about him she was just confused on why this person was in her house in the first place. The only issue, will not really an issue, that I had with this story is I have no idea what Frost looks like. The alien that Frost was hunting we get a very detailed description about him but when it comes to Frost we have no idea what he looks like.

This book had a lot of action and I'm in love with all of the new characters that we were introduced to. I am very interested in Lacey and her sisters and also and Frost's brother. There is just so many wonderful elements to this story and I wish that it was a bit longer just so we got more detail about the relationship between Lacey and Frost.

I am very excited to see how everybody's life turns out and also one of the humans that we meet in this book I want to know if he is going to be brought back in some other capacity or another. Also this book mentions the Goddess and I'm pretty sure I know who that is if the series stays true to all her other series.

I found this book while browsing the Audible Romance Package for scifi. The blurb is a bit misleading in that I expected a straight-up alien kidnapping story, but got something else.

Star Ranger (aka intergalactic Bounty Hunter) Frost is ready to retire to help his brother run a business on their home planet when he's given one last assignment; Find escaped convict Taar and bring him back - dead or alive. Taar has stolen a transport and ended up on a primitive planet called Earth. Frost is determined to get this mission over with quickly, and figures it'll be easy since Earth is filled with nothing but savages. He doesn't expect the inhabitants of Magic, New Mexico to be filled with magical creatures of unimaginable power.

Lacey Adams is a widow who runs the Touch of Magic animal shelter in Magic. She and the other inhabitants of Magic hide in plain sight, using their magic as they see fit, but never exposing it to outsiders. She doesn't have a choice when two alien species show up. Frost is determined to make her his, but Lacey won't open her heart up again.

I really loved how the heroine kept saving herself - and often the hero, too. That was probably my favorite part of the book. Around the 60%-70% mark it kind of went off the rails for a bit, but it came back toward the end. Though it wasn't perfect and some things really bothered me, I enjoyed the story overall. Definitely lighter fare, but fun. I'll be trying more from this author soon.

Fantastic story about a town called Magic, New Mexico

What's fantastic about Magic, New Mexico? Magic, New Mexico is a small town where the inhabitants can be them selves with the magic spell true helps normal people from realizing the true inhabitants of the town. Frost is a alien Stzr Ranger from the planet Glacier lands on Earth to capture Taar (a lizard crossed with tyranisus rex) criminal who likes to eat everything in sight, including people. Lacey is a widow and a powerful witch who runs a animal rescue service. Taar tries to eat Lacey but she tastes terrible. He wrecks her house searching for food.

Frost enters her house and quickly realizes that Lacey is his mate. She shrinks Taar to a size of a toy and put him into a container. What did she do to Frost? They have a ghost of her deceased husband wanting lazy to move on with her life . What will happen to both of them?

With characters like this it only leads to a fascinating, twisted story that'll make you laugh out loud. And it keeps the laughter going until the very end. If you thought this beginning of the story was funny just wait until the end. Or better yet don't wait until the end and get the book. I highly recommended this fascinating story about a magical town and it's magical characters. Did that

We are introduced to the "world" of Magic, New Mexico, constructed using "world-builder lite", throwing in elements of SciFi (aliens from space) and Magic (portals opened to other worlds in our/other dimensions), and populated by mythical beings (witches, warlocks, werewolves, vampires, elves, gnomes, and yes, even gorgons and fire breathing dragons) and various hybrids thereof. The town was founded as "a protected place where you can be whoever/whatever you are without hiding", as soon as Europeans started settling the continent, when the early settlers fled hard times (the villagers were gathering kindling and pitchforks). Some of those earlier inhabitants remain, socializing in the graveyard. The town has evolved into a modern-day tourist trap, similar to Kristen Painter's "Nocturn Falls", although Ms Smith didn't develop that aspect.

The loose framework allows plenty of opportunity for character development, which Ms Smith uses quite well in this, as well as two following volumes. They were typical well-done frothy fast moving romances with hea's and leading into the next one... that never happened.

Ms Smith threw open the framework she built to a plethora of talented authors, and it's now the Kindle World of Magic New Mexico... I read the one my Oasis said was next, and it fit right in... but I hope Ms Smith someday continues with HER characters...

I was between audio books and looking for something to while away my time away from the computer so I dipped into my Audible Romance subscription. I've read a few other books by S.E. Smith and the description of this one caught my eye. Frost, a Star Ranger, embarks on his last mission--to retrieve a galatic criminal under a death sentence. Too bad the villain is headed to Earth. When they land near the town of Magic, New Mexico, neither Frost nor Tar are prepared for the "welcoming" committee.

Magic is an insular community made up of magical misfits. Powerful witch Lacey still mourns her husband three years after his untimely death. Enter Frost, who is her soul mate. There's lots of magic, a touch of mayhem, some laughs, a sniffle or two, and a lot of fun in this short novel. I enjoyed my foray into Magic.

Frost is an alien and a Star Ranger. His job is to arrest or eliminate criminals from his planet. An assassin that he had already caught escaped and was enroute to Earth. So he traveled to Earth to kill the assassin before the "primitive" planet discovers that aliens are real.
Lacey runs a shelter for abused and abandoned animals. Her husband died three years before and she has vowed to never love again. Oh, and she is a witch. The entire town of Magic, New Mexico is full of paranormal-type creatures.
When Frost and Lacey meet he realizes that the tale of how his species finds a mate is real and that Lacey is his.
This is a story that includes bad guys, magic, humor, love and adorable cuteness. I read one of the books written in this world by another author and just had to go back to the original. I am ecstatic that I did.

Magical!

This book was very good & to me very fast-paced as I read it in a matter of hours.

Lacey, lost her husband (who was a troll in the real sense) to a bus accident & even though he's a spirit he's been trying to find someone for her & he did.

Frost, is a Star Ranger who landed on Earth & near Magic, New Mexico as he was on a trail to find an escaped prisoner from his world when he meets Lacey.

This book has an evil scientist, lots of sex scenes, lots of magical beings & more people from Frost's galaxy to try & keep him & Lacey apart. Oh, & Joseph, Jonah & Little Bit & the antics that those 3 get into are fun.

No, I'm not going to tell you what happens in this book; you'll have to read it for yourselves.

You can never go wrong with a book by this author. Laugh out loud occurrences happen.
Magic New Mexico is just that, a place where lots of different paranormals live, including talking animals and ghosts. This of course gives rise to lots of humour and comedy due to the actions of these residents as magic abounds.
Humour, silliness and magic abound in this story. Add in super hunky alien ranger that comes to earth to apprehend a nasty alien, horrible government agents, evil scientists and you get one hell of a story.
Love what happens at the end with everyone turning up on Frost’s planet.
A fun read that I have reread numerous times but I am rereading as a third book has at long last been written.
My previous reviews have gone missing but it is no hardship to read and review again.

I love the magical elements used with the story, and how all of the characters were represented. I know a lot of the paranormal/alien romances have instant love, but I liked that these two characters had time even though it was separate from one another, but time to grow. I didn't mind the idea of Lacey being pregnant, and I also liked that her late husband helped to find her someone else. The husband was questionable though, like you said a spell to keep the woman you loved in love with you? That, I don't approve of, but it did give Lacey the opportunity to look at Frost in a new light. I liked that Frost wasn't the knight in shinning armour that was unstoppable, it gives his character more of a relatability side. Overall I liked the book.

This had really fun elements of magic in it... but the whole "massively superior alien race" versus evil scientist who easily conquers said alien multiple times with knock-out drugs... ehhh...
And then the whole vivisection thing... And ya know, being in the medical profession, that's totally not how you would study an alien race... tissue samples, MRI, EKG, echo, ultrasounds... not just straight up vivsection...
This just wasn't my bag... even a magic-filled HFN couldn't save it
