The e-mail of Alan Damshroeder, a horny high school teacher. This is the first of 3 Alan Damshroeder books, followed by The Reluctant Master and Obey. All 3 books are collected in A Triumvirate of Saints.
Alan is a forty-two years old married man living in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. He is happy and content with his life. However, there is something that is missing for him. There is a lack of excitement and adventure, hence he keeps going online late every night chatting with stranger men, and people he might have met about sex and intimate stuff. Many times these chats lead to more things.
The book has no narration or story build-up. We are basically following the protagonist and understand his views on life, sex, and gay sex through his conversations with other men. Alan talks about many subjects with others. Some of these chats were really interesting, others were just OK. All this will depend on you and the subjects that interest you.
The book due to its format I feel is an experimental thing. It is not the usual format of storytelling so it might not be the cup of tea for everybody. Somehow, the format and the way it is written gave me the vibes of Dennis Cooper’s “The Sluts”. However, Web Guys is never as dark and deep as The Sluts but it still explores all the different tastes and fetishes of men in the gay community. I think the biggest problem with this format is that you will not be able to connect or know more about these men. Some of them were quite interesting and I wanted to know more about them but the moment the chat is over, it is over for that person. Alan is the one that you will get to know more about. Maybe that is what the author intended all along. For now, I’m going to rate this book for what it is and not for what I want it to be even though there is a lot that is left to be desired. Overall, this was a good read for me.
