Miracle at the Mall: The True Story of Landen Hoffmann, Who Survived Being Thrown from a 39-Foot-High Balcony at the Largest Mall in America

Rate this book
In 2019, Landen Hoffmann was thrown from the third-floor balcony of the largest mall in America—a 39-foot drop onto a concrete foundation. Medical professionals who happened to be at that exact place at that exact time found Landen lifeless—no breathing and no pulse. However Landen’s mother, Kari Hoffmann, immediately began praying and pleading for everyone in the mall to pray for her son.

What happened next was a series of breathtaking, science-defying miracles. Not only was Landen’s broken body revived back to life, but over the course of the next several months—as people all over the world prayed and fought in faith for this little boy—Landen made a full recovery.

After all of the worldwide media coverage, most people know at least part of this story. But what you probably don’t know is that God’s fingerprints are all over this story in many other amazing ways.

In Miracle at the Mall, you’ll read how God spoke to Kari about this event before it ever happened. You’ll hear about how He prepared her for this moment through several events in her life, even going back to when she was a child. You’ll read about how this was not the first attack on Kari and her family, and how this was not the first time Landen’s precious life was hanging in the balance.

Most importantly, you’ll get to see how God brings us through the most extreme and difficult circumstances imaginable—enabling us to see the victory through the power of faith in Jesus Christ.

inspiring

I was at Minneapolis Children’s with my then 4year old little girls preparing for and sedated MRI the morning Landen survived being thrown from the balcony. We were just told that there was an emergency and we would be just a bit behind schedule. We didn’t think much of it, u till driving back to WI later that day when I hear the prayer request on KTIS. I had to pull over. While I cried and prayed.

Your story hit close to home. It could have been any of our children. We personally have some of the same doctors that treated Landen. We have stayed in the PICU and have been cared for by some of the same nurses.

Your faith was inspiring. Landen’s story is truly a miracle and a testament to Gods healing power, His grace and his provision.

I’d love to see the true story made in to a movie.

I continue to pray for Landen! I pray that he better and stronger every day.

God’s blessings!

Amazing story of faith and promises.

I couldn’t put this book down. What an incredible story with a tragic evil beginning yet filled with faith and the fullness of God’s great power. Love the scriptures and Glory you give to Him!

There are two things you should know about this book before deciding if you should read it.

1. It's very religious. There is talk of God and Jesus on pretty much every page.

2. 95% of the book takes place in a hospital and describes in detail a play-by-play of this boy's medical treatment after his attack.

I'm not too religious and so I usually don't read religious books. However one thing I like about memoirs is to read different perspectives, even if you don't agree with them. I will say that it was interesting to read about how religion influenced how this mom dealt with the difficult situation.

Besides that it was pretty interesting to read about the aftermath of an interesting news story. I live in Minnesota and often go to the Mall of America, and remember seeing this on the news the day it happened. I followed the story as it updated and am happy that Landen survived.

My biggest takeaway from this book is how hard doctors work, not only to take care of patients medically, but also how to comfort the patient and patient's family emotionally. There seems to be a delicate balance in how to accomplish both. A good doctor is a great person.

Incredible. Kari does a wonderful job at relaying the emotional, spiritual, physical, and mental challenges that they faced throughout the journey of Landen's recovery. If you have ever been in a battle for life with "setbacks" the medical side will resonate. Her descriptions are realistic and I never doubted a word she said as fictionalized in any form. This is a story of overcoming with prayerfully leaning on the promises of Jesus Christ. A story of hope, strength, joy, patience, gratitude, trust - relying on faith through the valley. It is also a story of the GOODNESS found in fellow humans. "The devil couldn't take you out so he's trying to wear you out. Don't you dare get tired. Hold on because the tide is about to turn in your favor." "Sometimes it feels like the trial will never end. In those times we have to ask for His strength because our own strength will run out." "After Landen fell asleep that night, a doctor approached me and said, 'You know you can't maintain this warrior status forever, right?' In that moment, determination welled up inside me like never before. I couldn't believe what he said, and I looked him straight in the eye and responded, 'Watch me.'"

This story touched my heart. I can't imagine going through all this as a mother, and that poor little boy!!
The only criticism I have is that her husband really let her down in her time of need by refusing to see Landen for so long. Yes it was traumatic, yes it was highly upsetting, but Kari didn't have the luxury of deciding not to deal with it. I'm sure as his mother she wouldn't have left this for others to deal with but you get. my point. However, in the end he did his part and of course he was holding down the home front.
The other thing that stuck out to me was the other kids. Aside from being upset that their brother was going through all this, how did they react to Landen getting all this attention? Toys, gifts, visits from professional sports figures? Not to mention not having the presence of their mother? This is not a criticism of Kari, she really had no choice, but her other children were still very young and I know it was hard for them.
Now having said all that, I'm glad I read this and it's wonderful to read of such strong faith and reliance on the love of Jesus and the power and love of God.
I hope they all have a wonderful and blessed life.

I couldn’t put this book down! The Miracle Mall by Kari Hoffmann is one of the most powerful and inspiring books I’ve read in a long time. Her story of surviving a devastating fall and the long road to recovery is nothing short of extraordinary.

What really makes this book stand out is how deeply personal and honest it is. Kari doesn’t just share the facts—she invites you into her thoughts, emotions, and struggles in a way that makes you feel like you’re right there with her. It’s raw, real, and incredibly moving.

But what I loved most is the message of hope. This isn’t just a survival story—it’s a testament to human strength, perseverance, and the ability to rebuild even after the darkest moments. Kari’s journey is an inspiration, and I walked away from this book feeling more grateful and motivated in my own life.

If you love books that uplift and inspire, The Miracle Mall is a must-read. I’ll be recommending this to everyone I know!

A beautiful testimony of a powerful Creator who has great plans for Landen and his family after his attempted murder. I so admire the fervent faith of Kari, and those who continually surrounded her. I can't imagine how long and lonely that journey would have been without the people who came around them to carry their family through a horrendous event. I'm reminded of Genesis 18:14 that asks "Is anything too hard for the LORD?" And this book provides a definitive answer to that. Nothing is too hard for the LORD.

My favorite part of the book was how Kari ended each chapter with Scripture and a prayer. It was a reminder to keep my mind anchored in God's truth, to fight against an enemy who is out there looking to steal, kill and destroy.

Inspirational

I feel so grounded in my faith in God as I finish reading this inspiring book. Mom Kari did an outstanding job writing Landen's story.
Currently, my adult son is in his own health situation. Yesterday, we were informed that my son's treatments were not working. We will be switching to a new treatment in two days. This book, through the hands of our loving God, entered my life exactly when it needed to. Through this book, my resolve to be positive has been immensely strengthened. I will put on my full armor of God. While telling Landen's story, Kari Hoffman has strengthened me.

Well. This could have been a lot more condensed than it is. For most of the book, on every page Hoffman is thanking God and expressing how every single event/meeting/whatever is a religious miracle. Fine, but it works both ways. Some psycho threw your kid —where is the God-explanation for all the bad things? And what’s up with the dad NOT seeing this poor kid until he could handle it (like weeks I think)? Hello God? Not gonna help Dad with that one?

Anyway, if you skim through the redundant praising of the Lord, the story is interesting. There are some photos and scriptures throughout and a lot of medical details.

Miracle at the mall is a truly inspiring book. With what happened to Landen, I believe his mom's faith in God truly helped this family. It is both heart wrenching and emotional. The unwavering faith and truly a village that surrounded them with love. One of my favorite things said in the book...
If we define a miracle as something that defies all logical, rational & natural explanation, then no one can convince me that God doesn't perform miracles. We have lived one...

As a Minnesotan, I can tell you exactly where I was when I heard about what happened to Landen. This is a powerful story of all that Kari, Landen and her family went through from him being thrown off the balcony, to his long recovery back at the hospital to the people who reached out in support of the family. I have heard some criticism by reviewers about her discussing her faith and sharing this. I had no problem with this. As someone who has followed the story from the beginning I have known how important this family's faith journey is to them. I found myself wiping away tears at the end of the book. I am glad she had the Opportunity to share her and Landen's story and even more thankful Landen, despite some setbacks along the way.

So inspiring!!!

I absolutely loved this book and how credit was given to an amazing God. I barely remember this event happening and didn’t realize how much damage was done to the child! God is real and He wants you to seek him. He will give you so much joy even through the heartache.

I heard about Landon on the local news and said prayers for him and his family. I have been to this mall on many occasions with my children and can’t even imagine how he not only survived the injury but how he was able to thrive in such a short time.
I am truly happy and amazed by how God worked a miracle in this boy’s life!
