Cloaking Fate: An Epic Fantasy Romance

Rate this book
When freedom requires the ultimate sacrifice, will one woman risk defying fate?

Felíne Lochlan Faelstrom’s path was set long before she was born, her life a thread in the Goddess’s sinister design. She is more than just the daughter of the King and Queen of Asteros. She is the Prima, the Goddess’s chosen female. On her twenty-fifth birthday, she will mate the Primordial Male, bear him an heir, and break the Goddess’s ancient curse. The survival of the shurii race depends on her. But Felíne was born different from other shurii, and that difference threatens not only the success of her sacred mission but her very life.

Kalevar Kaine, a seasoned warrior with secrets of his own, offers to rescue his friend’s sister from a grim life of servitude and misery despite his initial reluctance. He’s no hero, after all, nor does he aim to be one. But as Kal is unexpectedly drawn into Felíne’s world, he finds himself entangled in a story far more dangerous and daunting than he ever imagined.

As Felíne ventures beyond the safety of the castle walls for the first time, she uncovers harrowing truths about her parents’ rule and the future that awaits her. Dark secrets and a forbidden attraction threaten to unravel everything she’s been taught to believe. Malevolent forces are closing in, and Felíne’s time is running out. With the fate of her people hanging in the balance, Felíne must decide if she’s willing to risk everything for a life that was never truly hers to begin with.

The more I sat with this book after finishing it, the more certain I became about my five star rating. N. A. Walker has a very descriptive, immersive writing style and takes her time establishing the world, characters, mythology, and all the little pieces of the story. The pacing in the first third is more measured than I’m used to, and it takes a while for the main characters’ storylines to come together. But this is epic fantasy romance, and the deeper I got into the story, the more that deliberate setup made sense. By the end, I realized Walker had delivered exactly what she promised, and some of those seemingly small details mattered far more than I initially realized. Once Kal and Felíne’s paths collide, I was completely invested in them. I loved their banter, the slow-building tension, and especially the fact that their relationship had time to develop. This is the kind of slow burn where the smallest moments start feeling ridiculously hot simply because the tension has been building for so long. And Kal? A giant, dark-haired warrior who gives incredibly thoughtful gifts and smells like bourbon and honeyed amber? I never stood a chance. But the final 30% is where this book absolutely got me. The stakes rise, the pacing takes off, and suddenly I went from enjoying the book whenever I had time to read to not wanting to sleep, socialize, or do anything that interfered with my reading time. I just wanted everyone to leave me alone so I could finish. And that epilogue? Diabolical. I had theories. I thought I was paying attention. The clues were sitting right in front of me, and I STILL didn’t see it coming. Even better, the reveal made me immediately start thinking back through earlier moments and realizing just how cleverly I’d been led in the wrong direction. I especially loved the way Walker used my own expectations as a fantasy romance reader against me. This is one of those books that became even better the more I thought about it after finishing. The world is bigger than I initially realized, I have unanswered questions, and thankfully I don’t have to wait for answers because I’m starting my ARC of book two immediately.

What an absolutely "breathtaking" story! From the very first chapter, I was pulled into the intricate world of Asteros a realm so vividly imagined that it felt real. The author’s writing is poetic yet powerful, balancing beauty and brutality in equal measure. Every scene unfolds like a painting, full of tension, emotion, and meaning.

Felíne Lochlan Faelstrom is one of the most compelling heroines I’ve read in a long time. Her courage to question fate, her quiet defiance, and her longing for freedom made me root for her with every turn of the page. She’s not just a chosen one she’s a woman torn between duty and desire, faith and truth. I loved seeing her grow stronger, more self-aware, and determined to shape her own destiny, even when the odds seemed impossible.

Kalevar Kaine’s character added so much depth to the story. He’s rugged, haunted, and unexpectedly gentle beneath his hardened exterior. The dynamic between him and Felíne was mesmerizing equal parts tension, trust, and forbidden longing. Their connection felt raw and real, and every shared moment carried emotional weight.

The world-building is simply phenomenal. The lore, the Goddess’s curse, and the complex hierarchy of the shurii people were all brilliantly crafted. You can tell how much thought and heart went into every detail. The twists shocked me, the revelations broke me, and by the final pages, I was left completely speechless.

This book is not just a fantasy, it’s an emotional journey of self-discovery, sacrifice, and what it means to truly be free. The pacing was flawless, the prose was gorgeous, and the ending lingered in my mind long after I finished.

The cover deserves a special mention, it’s absolutely stunning and perfectly reflects the story’s power and mystery. But it’s the author’s voice that truly shines here. Their storytelling is rich, immersive, and full of heart.

If you love fantasy that blends destiny, rebellion, love, and magic in the most heartfelt way, this book is "unmissable". I’ll be recommending it to everyone and waiting eagerly for the next installment.

I actually bought this book after being accepted as an ARC reader for book two in the series, and I am so glad I decided to go in completely blind.

The first couple of chapters didn't immediately hook me, but they gave me just enough intrigue to keep going. By chapter three, I was fully invested and could not put it down.

This story has such a unique and wild plot. The consequences of what the goddess did—whether her actions were right or wrong—shaped the lives of the women in Asteros in heartbreaking ways, forcing many of them into lives of service and tragic fates.

Our FMC is a sheltered princess destined to become the Curse Breaker, a role that could very well destroy her in the process. Then we have the MMC, a man who despises the crown and everything it stands for. Watching these two collide and be thrown into an adventure while neither truly understands who they are was so much fun to experience.

This delivers on the slow burn, enemies-to-lovers goodness with plenty of tension, banter, fighting, and chemistry that keeps building with every chapter.

And that ending...

Let's just say I am incredibly grateful to already have the ARC for book two sitting on my device because I am jumping into it immediately. That cliffhanger was absolutely brutal, and I need answers ASAP.

The writing style is absolutely exquisite. I felt like I knew where the story was going at some point, but the twists and turns at the end... I need the next book now!
I feel like this can easily be an 8+ book series, and I would still want to read more about these characters.
Great fantasy romance where you will find the perfect balance between plot, character building, and romance. One does not overpower the other.

Thank you, N. A. Walker for an amazing read(additional gratitude for the internal struggles and monologues of the characters 😊)! It was a fun read, but I feel like the next book will break my heart at least a few times because of the inevitable 💔

“Somehow, Felíne understood it wasn’t just the Kal she’d begun to know looking at her. It was the part of himself that he kept hidden behind that handsomely cultured façade—his second form. The monster within peeked behind the curtain of Kal’s iron will.”

Cloaking Fate is incredible, and unlike anything I have ever read. I was completely immersed in this book the entire way through. This book explores the intricacies of important topics like sacrifice, moral dilemmas, the gray area between right and wrong, sexual wellness, body violation for both women and men, and much more.

The world building in this book is so detailed and unique. The shurii species, the curse plaguing their kind, the god/goddess lore that predates the events of this book: they all create this beautiful picture of a world that feels like a combination of epic fantasy and a twisted fairytale come to life. The concept of having a second form is so interesting to me, and I loved the descriptions of what each character looked like when they transformed.

Felíne is both duty bound and feisty, with a thirst for freedom after a life spent training to be the perfect Prima and break the curse of her people. Her journey is tumultuous; I found myself feeling so many emotions for her. Annoyed by her naivety, saddened by her circumstances, enraged by the responsibility being pushed onto her, hopeful for her to escape her fate. The complexities of her character and moral dilemmas made her felt very real and easy to connect with.

Kal is the ultimate protector, with a quiet air of mystery that makes him so interesting. Little bread crumbs about his past and potential future are sprinkled through the book, but I have a feeling this book barely scratched the surface of who he is. One thing’s for sure: he’s the type of man every woman needs in her life.

For avid fantasy/romantasy readers like me, this is a book you don’t want to miss. This story stands completely on its own, with a unique premise that feels refreshing. The ending had my jaw on the floor and can’t wait to continue the series!

I'll be damned. The past few days I had planned out. Actually decided to be productive in my life. But no, I had to have started reading this book. Everywhere I look is a mess.

So I was also wondering why there were no reviews and found out it came out only a week ago and then I had to go through the agony of discovering that the second book doesn't come out until September. When I catch you NA Walker T.T

Details on the book:
You know when you start a fire it is important to first get all the necessary items, prop them up nicely and then patiently create a spark. This is the best I can describe it. The fire starts out small but when it BURNS IT BURNS.

Feline is also such a complex character. She contradicts herself often and then corrects herself. She was brought up a certain way and when she comes in contact with things that oppose that but are still logical to her she is almost stuck. Its so clear in the way she defends both "sides".

I'm a slow reader so it took me a couple of days but now I can finally get back to my life~

Feline, Railah, Kitty? The FMC Feline has been locked into a case of mistaken identity and for her own safety must keep it that way as the rescued Railah. Oh the sweet slow burn romantic torcher than ensues as she falls in love with her abductor… savior? This book was fabulous and I can’t wait to see what happens next.

Quick description: Romantic, heartwarming with a bit of danger and lots of protection.

❤️ Enemies to Lovers (but still kinda enemies)
❤️ Touch her Die
❤️ Predator power
❤️ Destiny and Fate await
❤️ Secret passages and royal affairs
💖 Saving the future of civilization

Spice level: 🌶️

The good:

This story starts out with the reign of gods and a misstep leaving the goddess hurt spreading hatred, wrath and curses among her very creations.

Feline the person born to break said curse or try is born to a palace and fed a web of lies or maybe not lies? (You’re gunna have to read it!) The best part is she is educated and smart and I loved her role as a smart and witty FMC at this point. She certainly not dumb and in need of saving.

Her role as the fated savior entails demands akin to servitude and forced copulation with a literal beast of men to produce a child as foretold by the prophecies. With the weight of the world on her shoulders she sneak out of the castle for a breather in a garden she had spotted on previous secret ventures from the palace, affecting the fate of all those around her in the process.

All the men and women with a few fated exceptions have two forms in this story human and human/lion form. This aspect of the story does a wonderful job exploring femininity vs. masculinity and how they are at times at odds. How they complement each other’s strengths as well as turmoil over which is truly the finest form of being.

When Kal the MMC comes to rescue an actual fate from the kingdom a mix up leaves felines royal self in his capture instead. Chaos ensues, her perspective on the world broadened and her true talents revealed.

The parts that drove me mad:

The FMC comes in contact with a fate instructed to educate her in what she needs to meet her man. This fate is beautiful and they had a wonderful soulful connection. I was hoping it would turn romance sooooo bad and it didn’t!

There’s a horse, an amazing horse that is steadfast yet wild and brings a since of wild freedoms to the story. Lovely, them riding together for miles also lovely and I wanted more!

“𝙏𝙝𝙚𝙣, 𝙤𝙪𝙩 𝙤𝙛 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙙𝙖𝙧𝙠… 𝙖 𝙫𝙞𝙡𝙡𝙖𝙞𝙣’𝙨 𝙣𝙞𝙜𝙝𝙩𝙢𝙖𝙧𝙚 𝙢𝙖𝙩𝙚𝙧𝙞𝙖𝙡𝙞𝙯𝙚𝙙.”

Cloaking Fate by N.A. Walker

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

A high fantasy that 𝘥𝘦𝘮𝘢𝘯𝘥𝘴 your full attention—and rewards you 𝘳𝘪𝘤𝘩𝘭𝘺 for it. The opening chapters are dense with 𝘪𝘮𝘮𝘦𝘯𝘴𝘦 world-building, thick with names, history, magic systems, and politics. It’s a Tolkien-esque kind of immersion—slow and methodical. PSA: If you’re tempted to DNF early on—𝘥𝘰𝘯’𝘵. The payoff is worth every careful, deliberate page. The last third is a WHIRLDWIND.

Felíne Lochlan Faelstrom is the chosen Prima, raised in a castle of expectation and secrets. Her fate is to break the curse hanging over her people. But, it’s not that simple. The beauty of this story is that nothing is black and white. Felíne’s entire life has been shaped by duty, and the further she steps outside the castle walls, the more she sees just how much she’s been shielded from.

Enter Kalevar Kaine—his cold irritation feels dangerously close to obsession, the tension between Felíne & Kal simmers like it might erupt at any second. There’s no insta-love here—just raw, charged annoyance that morphs into a kind of desperation neither of them are ready to face. It’s subtle. It’s slow. It’s destructive. And I cannot wait to see it either 𝘣𝘶𝘳𝘯 𝘥𝘰𝘸𝘯 or 𝘦𝘹𝘱𝘭𝘰𝘥𝘦 in book two.

“𝙒𝙝𝙚𝙧𝙚 𝙮𝙤𝙪 𝙜𝙤, 𝙄 𝙬𝙞𝙡𝙡 𝙛𝙤𝙡𝙡𝙤𝙬.”

The prose is GORGEOUS and lush—poetic at times. It’s the kind of writing that 𝘭𝘪𝘯𝘨𝘦𝘳𝘴, not because it’s trying to be flashy, but because it feels—like every word is chosen with purpose. Every description, every line of internal monologue, is soaked in beauty and sorrow and depth.

This is not your next quick fantasy read. It’s a slow, sweeping, emotionally complex epic with teeth. This book is about fate, yes—but also the razor-edged cost of choosing your own path. For fans of dense, lyrical, high-stakes fantasy with a 𝘱𝘢𝘪𝘯𝘧𝘶𝘭𝘭𝘺 𝘴𝘭𝘰𝘸 𝘣𝘶𝘳𝘯, this one is absolutely for you.

I thoroughly enjoyed this epic fantasy tale, and I cannot wait for the second book to see what happens next.

This story begins as a cautionary tale to not piss off your Goddess partner, as she will lay down a vengeful curse upon your created people. Was it fair to put the breaking of the curse on a young, female shurii's shoulders? Probably not, but that's where we are.

The shurii in question is Felíne Lochlan Faelstrom, and she's had her whole life planned out for her since before she was born, however this all changes when she meets Imogen, an elder tasked with intimacy training...

Now I don't want to spoil too much because this is a fantastic read. There's a slow burn romance, shifters, a bit of spice, mistaken identity, violence, and a single horse (Sig needed a mention). This book does cover some mature & sensitive topics, including sexual abuse, so it is intended for adult readers only.

I fell in love with both Kitty and Kal, and their interactions with each other had me struggling to put my Kindle down. And that last sentence in the epilogue? I did not see that coming!! I need book 2 ASAP please and thank you 🤭

I received an ARC of this book from the author, and I'm voluntarily leaving this review.

I went into this book expecting to enjoy it, but I didn’t expect to become so completely absorbed by it.

The beginning was a little slower for me, but the imagery the author created was so vivid that it kept me reading. I could picture the world clearly, and the moment Imogen entered the story, everything changed. The mystery she brought was what made me fully lock in.

From the moment Kal pounced on Feline in the garden, I stopped feeling like I was reading a book and started feeling like I was watching a film. The scenes played out so clearly in my mind, and the author’s descriptions of the world were one of the strongest parts of the story. The way she builds locations and moves between them makes the world feel alive rather than just a backdrop.

Cindamar especially captured my imagination. I could picture it in full glory—the sunlight reflecting off the pools, the food, Shuuri moving through the world in her different forms. If I could spend a day there, I wouldn’t go looking for adventure. I’d want to explore, experience the standing baths, and simply exist in the world the author created.

The characters were where this book truly came alive for me. Once they reached Cindamar, I became deeply invested in Feline, Kalevar, Meryl, Grisham, Adder and Garren. The characters had so many layers. At first, I thought Kal might be the typical mysterious, attractive love interest, but he became so much more than that. I felt his torment, his anger, his desire and his yearning.

Feline was a beautiful character inside and out. She carried responsibility seriously, but she never lost her curiosity, kindness or playfulness. What I admired most was that she was able to look beyond what she had been taught and make her own decisions about who deserved saving. She was more than her beauty and more than her role. She was someone with compassion and strength.

The relationships in this book felt incredibly real. Feline and Grisham especially stood out to me. Grisham’s gratitude was handled perfectly; it wasn’t exaggerated, but you could feel the weight behind it. The grief shared between Feline and Meryl also felt incredibly authentic. Meryl’s loss, especially after watching Bo die and then seeing her alone afterwards, made me feel her pain so strongly that I wanted revenge for her.

One thing I really appreciated was how differently this story approached fantasy. It has elements you might expect, like rebellion and kingdoms, but it doesn’t feel predictable. The way loyalty is explored, especially Feline’s loyalty to the Shuuri rather than simply the crown, adds so much depth. The book also handles interpretation of faith and scriptures in a way that reflects real-world discussions around religion and belief, but in a way that feels easier to see through the lens of fantasy.

I was also pleasantly surprised by how progressive the world felt. The author challenged some of the expectations I have from fantasy stories, and it felt natural rather than forced. It was refreshing to see a world that didn’t follow the usual rules.

The ending, despite being a cliffhanger, felt complete. That was something I didn’t expect. I finished the book feeling warm. The story wasn’t finished, but it still felt whole. It ended with kindness, laughter and a sense of fulfilment rather than leaving me feeling frustrated.

The three words I would use to describe this book are: enrapturing, moving and complex.

I love fantasy because it gives me an escape, and this book genuinely transported me somewhere else. If you pick this one up, say goodbye to your loved ones first because once you start, you may not want to come back.

Ok. First up. I’ve to say this loud and clear and concise:
I LOVED KITTY!

And I adored this book. I literally couldn’t put it down. Finished it in one day!

Ok. Back to the details.

Shall we start with the tropes?
❤️ Mistaken identity
💖 enemies to lovers for a hot minute
❤️ touch her and die
💖 he is grumpy to all but her
❤️ One horse (omg fav new trope unlocked)
💖off on a little adventure
❤️ political intrigue
.
Spice level : 🌶️🌶️

Now. The story: (without giving away too much)
We start with a scene that is the living embodiment of “hell hath no fury like a woman scorned”.
Or, well, goddess in this case. And honestly? I can stand for that.

The end result of that though is a little dubious only because it leads to our heroine being bound by fate (and the scorned goddess) into a very tough spot.
The literal future of her race (Shurii) is on her shoulders and it’s…a tough situation for any girl.
.
Especially one who not only grows up knowing what she is bound to but also away from everyone but her very aged tutors, so she can learn to do her duty ‘right’.
.
And that is where we begin our journey. Watching her live with her truth.
.
However here is where this book got my first gold star. Isolated she might be, but our Kitty is very self aware.
.
Credit of course to her doctor/advisor/therapist but I loved the inclusion of this sub plot because as I said our heroine is in a tough spot.
And anyone would crumble in her place. That she needed therapy? Made her more real.
.
That the therapy made her less naive? I loved that.
.
I will not add more of the story. I feel like it’s a page turner from the beginning so I’ll let you savour it.
.
However, I’ll add three hints to the story here:
.
1. The therapist/doctor was her first friend but soon she makes a new one who helps her shed another layer of naïveté (and coincidently brings in the spice to the story)
.
2. The naive heroine doesn’t stay much sheltered for long.
.
3. And through the book her world view does a good 180* shift, which is a wonderful journey to take with her.

If you made it till here, then I’ll leave you with the best gems of this story:
-shifters!!
-intricately woven side characters with their own stories unwinding
-the first kiss is 🔥🔥🔥🔥
.
P.S. why are you still here? Go read this book!
.
.
P.P.S. The MMC (Kal) is 🔥🔥. He is Mcsteamy with fighting training and deadly knife skills.
.

Note: I received this book as an arc, and I chose to review this book of my own free will.

Cloaking Fate immerses readers in a richly crafted world shaped by power, prophecy, and hidden truths. The story centers around a compelling heroine torn between duty and freedom, navigating danger at every turn. With vivid world-building and gripping storytelling, Nicole delivers a high-stakes tale that will leave readers eager for the next installment.

Felíne Lochlan Faelstrom, the daughter of the king and queen of Asteros, has spent her life preparing for a destiny she never chose. As the Prima, the Goddess’s chosen one, her duty is to mate with the Primordial Male, bear an heir, and break the curse that threatens the survival of the shurii people. But as she ventures outside the castle walls for the first time, she discovers truths that could unravel not just her mission but the delicate balance of power that holds her kingdom together.

Felíne’s journey is as harrowing as it is inspiring. Each revelation forces her to question her place in the prophecy and the shadowy legacy of her parents’ rule. Nicole crafts Felíne with remarkable depth, perfectly showcasing her struggle with the role imposed on her. Felíne’s connection with Kalevar Kaine is subtle yet impactful, adding layers of intrigue, complexity, and romantic tension.

What sets Cloaking Fate apart is its ability to balance classic elements of sprawling epic fantasy with an intimate, character-driven narrative. The lush and vast world-building sets the perfect stage for a story involving divine machinations, political schemes, and dark secrets lurking around every corner. Yet Nicole never loses sight of the emotional stakes, grounding the story in Felíne’s deeply personal struggle to reclaim her identity.

Cloaking Fate is an unforgettable start to a series that promises to leave its mark on the fantasy genre. At its core, Cloaking Fate is about the struggle for freedom and identity, as Felíne must navigate her pre-destined role and the cost of defying it. It is a must-read for fans of epic fantasy, evocative storytelling, and high-stakes adventures filled with twists and secrets.

Wow! Hell hath no fury like a Goddess scorned! The prologue to this book was like its own mini novella. I loved it. It really hooked me in.

I loved the writing style of this book - it was beautifully written with lots of intricate details woven through the narrative to make it feel a really immersive experience. It kept me interested all the way through and kept me guessing. Just when I thought I had it figured out..nope…sneaky little plot twist! Didn’t guess the ending at all - good cliffhanger. Can’t wait to see how this reveal affects everything.

There is a fair amount of information to take in within the first few chapters as the plot lines are established but this is very much needed as there are some complex details that need to be explained and are essential. It takes a little while to get into the story itself due to this, but that was is not a negative for me at all. The world building is really interesting and unique. We have only really scratched the surface in this book, I feel, so I am very much looking forward to seeing how this world develops in future books.

I loved the cast of characters - a good balance of characters to root for and ones with questionable motives/morals that you could quite cheerfully throw off a cliff! I enjoyed the character development but again the surface has been only been scratched with some of the characters. There are still unanswered questions and a bit of mystery there, particularly with Kal, the MMC. I enjoyed the chemistry between Felíne (aka Kitty/Reilah) and Kal. It’s going to be so interesting to see how this plays out in book 2 with so much secrecy between them yet growing feelings too!
Loved this book and can’t wait for book 2.

Thank you to N.A. Walker for the opportunity of reading an advanced copy of this fantastic book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

4.5 stars.

I dont usually enjoy heavily narrated 3rd person books. However, with the somewhat dystopian concept matched with the prophecy, i found it interesting, and it kept me gripped. When a kidnapping became liberation, I just had to know if she'd escape that destiny.

I really enjoyed watching her character flourish outside of the expectations that were forced upon her through the prophecy. With such amounting pressure its no wonder she became anxious, but i loved how she was given coping mechanisms to use, and hopefully, if someone with anxiety reads this, they may learn a few techniques to use.

I loved how the author showed both sides of her.
The felìne who was isolated, controlled, and weighted with such a heavy burden. And somewhat indoctrinated while never given any freedom of choice.
And also the felìne/kitty who is learning more about herself each day and is able to build her own views on the choices others have made, as she explores her ever growing expended world. It's super cute watching her grow friendships.
I just hope that it doesn't get thrown away when kal finds out her secret, and i can't wait to see if she chooses duty over freedom

Quotes ♡

“No? Perhaps you’re looking for a different word,” she offered, somewhat breathless. The twitchy jaw unhinged. “Fine,” he said, leaning even closer. “Do you have any idea how aggravating you can be?” “An inkling,” she said. “But what have I done this time?”

“If he put his hands on you…” Kal’s deep voice was quiet and laced with menace. “There is nothing that will save him. Not his station. Not his brother. Nothing.”

“Wherever you go, I will follow,” he said, voice low. “Package deal, remember?”

Hence the fire. Sometimes, all a man needed was a little responsibility to satisfy that inherent desire to feel useful.

An exciting whirlwind adventure of a princess meant to save her people and the man who thinks he’s saving her from a life of something she is not.

The FMC has been raised in the palace, training in all ways to one day be worthy of her role as the prima female of her people, the one born with no stronger shifted form, prophesied to bring fertility back to their people once she is able to couple with and have a child with the prime male in his shifted beast form. She is getting close to her presentation day, and a new elder is brought in to teach her the ways of women and how to possibly survive this coupling, only she starts to learn her life at the palace has been sheltered and all she really wants is freedom. On a night away that’s against the rules, a mistaken identity has her whisked out of the capital by the MMC who thinks he’s saving her. He ignores her pleas and flees the kingdom with her, and out of fear and a bit of curiosity she stays. But with the fate of the people in her hands, there’s no way she can truly escape her fate.

I really enjoyed the storyline of this book and the way the background of the curse was first shown and then the responsibility of the princess was built up and her more meek nature as she felt the pressure of the world on her shoulders. I of course loved the MMC and the way he cared for her and helped show her this alternate life to what she had been living and also the tension that slowly built between them. Of course an escape/kidnapping and then secrets between them leads to some animosity but also fun banter and I can’t wait to see how the eventual reveal of the truth unravels. Overall this was a fun read and I can’t wait to see what happens next. My rating 4.5/5!

Cloaking Fate is the kind of fantasy that asks you to give it a little time at the beginning, and then suddenly you realise you are completely inside its world.

There is a lot being established in the first part of the story, with its mythology, beliefs, politics and different layers of the world, so it took me a moment to fully settle into it. But once everything started connecting, I became genuinely invested. The world N. A. Walker has created feels incredibly rich, and I especially loved that the lore wasn’t simply there to decorate the story. Ideas surrounding fate, faith, loyalty and freedom actually influence the characters and the choices they make.

Féline was probably my favourite part. I loved watching her question what she has always believed and slowly begin deciding for herself what is right, rather than blindly accepting the role the world has chosen for her. And then there is Kal… mysterious, complicated, carrying far more beneath the surface than he initially lets you see. Their connection has that delicious tension where you know there is still SO much waiting to unfold.

I also really enjoyed the wider cast. There are characters I immediately wanted to protect, others I absolutely did not trust, and several whose motivations I am still side eyeing very suspiciously. 😂

What surprised me most was how unpredictable the story became. There were moments when I thought I understood where things were going, only for the book to quietly prove me wrong. And that ending? Excuse me?? Apparently peace was never an option.

This feels very much like the beginning of something much bigger. There are unanswered questions, complicated relationships and pieces of the world that we’ve barely touched yet.

And now I need to know what happens next. 👀✨

4⭐ | Cloaking Fate
This book taught me two things…
📖 First, N.A. Walker significantly expanded my vocabulary. I don't think I've ever used my Kindle dictionary so much. 🤓
📚 Second, I'm incredibly thankful I discovered this series through the ARC call for Revealing Fate, because I don't have to wait between books!
Felíne was the highlight of this story for me.
She's dutiful, honest, curious, and genuinely wants to help others. One of my favorite parts of her journey is that she realizes while she can't control everything happening around her, she can control how she responds.
"She'd come to learn that her attitude was one of the few things in life over which she had control."
As she leaves the only world she's ever known, she's forced to question everything she's been taught about her purpose, her family, and her destiny. Watching that growth unfold kept me completely invested.
And Kal... 🥹
I loved that his instinct to protect never overshadowed his respect for Felíne. Their slow-burn romance felt earned, and every interaction made me root for them a little more.
This book doesn't just tell you what's happening—it makes you feel it. I absolutely flew through it.
Now I'm immediately diving into Revealing Fate (releasing September 1), and honestly, this is the perfect time to move Cloaking Fate to the top of your TBR.

I went into this book because I was picked to Arc read the 2nd book in the series. I gave this one 3.5 stars.
I will say that I had a really hard time getting into this first book. I struggled to stay engaged with the story and characters. It spends the majority of the book learning the story behind Feline and what her sole purpose in life is for as the chosen Prima, tasked to break a centuries old curse from the Goddess & Godking. Or so that's what she's been taught. Feline is tasked to save the entire Shurri race. But has her whole life been a lie? She has to find the answers to that and quick.
This book is a lot of world building and for someone with a small attention span it can be difficult. So just know that going in.
Now, having said that the last 25% of the book completely saved it for me. I couldn't put it down and I was glad I stuck it out and finished. The chemistry we finally get to see between Kal and Feline is fire. The journey they take to Cindamar the hidden city turns into the start of a war with Asteros.
Feline struggles with her guilt for the lives lost and her part and lie she is keeping that caused it all. Will she find a way to back to her doomed fate as the Prima? Or will she risk it all for the love she has found with Kal?

"She woke up, cried, gave herself a pep talk, dressed, and watched her first sunrise. Her captor should be wary. It's amazing what a good cry could do for a female."

The first half is slower. But you have to keep going.

There is a lot of world building and scene setting in the first half of this book. It was really, really good. The writing is amazing. But, for me, it was just a tad slow. Once I reached almost 50%, it started moving and I was along for the ride.

The first half is extremely important in understanding our FMC, Felíne, who she is, and why she is. It's building her backstory, her understanding of the world, and ultimately her responsibility to it. Felíne has lived with the knowledge that she is the Goddess' Prima her whole life. Has understood she has a responsibility to her people, but that responsibility is scary and heavy. It's only natural that someone with that much responsibility would wish for a semblance of freedom. A grain of choice in a life that is already chosen for her.

Kal. Kal just wants to help the people he cares about. He wants to give them a better life. He is gruff, but his heart. I don't want to give too much away.

The tension between the two is palpable. The need and forbidden attraction. The hope. The people we meet along their journey. It's worth the time.

Secrets. Hidden identities. Humor. Love. Loss. Hope. And the slowest of burns, glacially slow.

N.A. Walker created a whole world for us in Cloaking Fate, and it is a must read.

What to expect -
❤️‍🔥Fated mates with a twist
❤️‍🔥Slow burn romance
❤️‍🔥Secret identity
❤️‍🔥Fierce yearning
❤️‍🔥Forbidden love
❤️‍🔥Single horse
❤️‍🔥Follow your heart, or fulfill your destiny?
❤️‍🔥He'd let the world burn to keep her

Felíne is the Prima, her fate has been set. She is the one that must break the Goddess's curse hanging over the shurri. She has spent all her life learning what she must do to fulfill her destiny shielded inside the castle walls.

Kalevar Kaine, comes to rescue who he thinks is Railah from becoming a Fate, instead he kidnaps Felíne, chaos follows. Their relationship is full of tension, trust, and forbidden longing. Such a slow burn in all the right ways!!

The world building is intricate, the book is a bit heavy to start with, but this is needed to set up the rest of the book, but it is beautiful, poetic and easy to follow. The twist at the end, I was not expecting. I am so glad I am able to get straight in Revealing Fate.

I’m so glad book two is ready!!

The beginning hooked me, because what do you mean his betrayal led to them disappearing?! I don’t want to give any spoilers but dang it’s hard not to!! The curse?! How does it get broken?? I am SO glad the second book is ready because that ending was brutal! I’m a sucker for a good cliffhanger! The way this author writes is so immersive. You literally feel like you’re in the story with the characters. Be prepared for the emotional roller coaster because it takes you through them all. And the slow burn, enemies to lovers, touch her and you lose your life?? Chefs kiss! Literal perfection!!

This was beautifully written! I am stoked to read book two and immerse myself even more into the world the author writes!

This is the kind of author I want to see on The Indie Author Insider podcast, because I absolutely need to know she created this world, her characters, and how in the world she came up with that cliffhanger!!!

I really enjoyed this one! It did take me a little bit to settle into the story, especially with all the detail in the world building and magic system. There was a lot to take in at first, but once I got underway, I was hooked.

I really liked watching Feline start questioning the life that’s basically been chosen for her and realizing there’s so much she doesn’t know. And of course, I enjoyed the connection building between her and Kal, especially with that forbidden element mixed in.

There’s a good balance of romance, danger and mystery, but still plenty of actual storyline outside of the romance. I also really enjoy N. A. Walker’s writing style and how much detail she puts into the world without making it feel like too much.

Overall, a really solid start to the series and if you enjoy fantasy with strong world-building, slow-burn romance and plenty of mystery, I’d recommend reading this one. I am definitely ready to jump into book 2, Revealing Fate, after that ending!

Cloaking Fate was such an enjoyable start to the series. The characters were easy to connect with, and I quickly became invested in their journeys. The world building was one of the strongest aspects for me. It felt well thought through and consistent from beginning to end. I especially appreciated the prologue. It felt authentic rather than gimmicky, and the story actually delivered on what it set up. Everything came together in a way that made the world, its magic, and the plot feel believable and cohesive. Overall, this was a fantastic introduction to the series. I’m already reading the ARC of Revealing Fate, and I’m excited to see where the story goes next. If you enjoy fantasy with engaging characters, immersive world-building, and a story that follows through on its promises, I’d definitely recommend picking this up.

WHY IS NOONE TALKING ABOUT THIS. I will be honest, I don't remember signing up for the ARC of Revealing Fate. Midnight me reads blurbs and is attracted to shiny, intriguing covers. For once, she did me a favor.

I loved this....other than the nickname Kitty (it's cute, I get it..just not my favorite). There's humor (teaching poor Feline by bringing her to a pleasure house), a wonderful plot that is organized and constantly moving forward. I haven't had less sleep in ages because "one more chapter" led to holy hell I can't stop here so many times. If I didn't already have Revealing Fate I would have been furious.

Kal. I love me some Kal.

If you loved any of the enumerous romantasy books out this year that have banter, slow burn/tension, one horse, mistaken identity (ala Of Blood and Ash, Shield of Sparrows, A Bargain So Bloody), you'll absolutely love this.

Ugh, I loved this book so much!

It does take a few chapters to get into, which is perfectly fine as the world is expansive, and there's a lot of groundwork. However, once you're in, you are LOCKED in.

The world building, characters, story, and pacing were all *chefs kiss*. The story feels very unique and a road less travelled than some other current fantasy romance novels where you feel you've read the story a million times.

For me, it was a lovely blend of fantasy and romance. I like my fantasy plots with lots of intrigue and story, with the romance woven in organically, which this definitely does well.

If you love fantasy romance and are searching for your next obsession, this is definitely it! I can't wait for the next one!

Not only is the book cover absolutely stunning, this book was a masterpiece. So incredibly proud of N.A Walker for this amazing debut of the first book in this series. It is going to be a fantastic journey and I literally cannot wait to read the next book. The story line is unlike anything I have read before. And the witty banter!!!! Love love love! I could not put it down because I needed to know what happened. Stayed up way too late too many nights just trying to finish one more chapter. Félines journey is full of action, a glorious slow burning love flame, and wild betrayal. So many questions, many different thoughts and theories of what is coming next, which is what makes this an incredible read.

4.5/5 ⭐️

Holy damn. The first 30% were extremely boring, I’ll admit. But the next 70? Damn.

The FMC is slightly annoying in the sense that she’s the unfortunate woman of perfect figure, mender education and was chosen by a goddess and oh, also, like the whole world is resting on her shoulders. I wouldn’t rate her too highly.

But Kal? Chef’s kiss. No words.

The overall plot was interesting, though it was slow as hell. Literally only a few days happened in the span of hundreds of pages. Insane.

But the concept of the whole plot happening as one big voyage/kidnapping was captivating (literally). The world building was there and it was done quite alright. I wish less thoughts of the FMC were just given on the platter and more discovered by the reader through her actions.

Thank you for allowing me to read your book early. Although it took a while, I did find myself enjoying this book the more and more I read it. I think my biggest challenge was the vocabulary when I first started reading the book. Once the character building was complete I found myself loving Feline aka Kitty and Kal’s relationship. I love how Kitty was able to develop and finally begin to discover who she is without the expectations from everyone else. Imogen is my favorite character by far. I love her personality and she’s such a genuine character. I for sure want to keep reading this series to learn more about this world and how everything plays out. The ending made my jaw drop.
