When I started this book, I was instantly drawn in. Strong intro, interesting concept. But as I kept reading, I realized I was not enjoying the read and put it down for a bit to see if I’d feel better when I came back, and my thoughts didn’t really change (the second half of the book kept more of my interest, though).
While the plot was interesting, it was not written in a way that left me wanting to keep reading. Some things that stood out to me:
- I wish how Layla and Harlow met was explained a bit more earlier. I didn’t find out until halfway through the book how they actually met online, so to me, this FMC who wasn’t allowed to leave home somehow met someone online and became close enough to plan her escape over text despite not texting often because she was fearful her dad would see … which … doesn’t make sense to me??
- Random political spiels… not a fan. And trust me, I agree with what the stances are but they seemed out of place and distracted from the story.
- A lot of over-describing throughout the book. It could’ve been shorter and an easier read if this weren’t the case.
- Not a fan of the 🌶️ scenes (and I eat those up normally 😫); I honestly feel like the book would’ve been better without this.
- Seemed like a lot of extra characters for no reason — they didn’t really add anything and contributed to more superficial dialogue imo, which made it difficult for me to connect with the characters. ALSO, Aaradhya and Aaron??? 🫠 Thankfully, this bit came at the end otherwise I probably wouldn’t have finished because it seemed so random and annoyed me.
This was a coming of age type of book, exploring young love and darker themes (check the trigger warnings). At the end of the day, was this my favorite read? No. But it may be yours! I always recommend giving new authors a try because you never know.
✨🤍 ARC review
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
I was lucky enough to receive an ARC copy of this book. Definitely read the triggers before reading. I liked the story of retelling of the past and then to the future for Jaxon and Layla. The story itself was good it isn’t as dark as the story makes it seem, the dark I think comes from the suicidal thoughts and wants of Layla due to her past. The possessiveness from Jaxon comes from a caring side that he doesn’t want to lose her due to what they both have gone thru. There were some times in the story that was hard to push thru due to some slowness and confusion but overall I do like this story.
I enjoyed the premise of the story — the idea of two wounded people finding solace in each other while coming to terms with their own painful pasts was compelling. It has a light romantic feel to it, when describing the main characters’ first young love experiences together, their tentative love and rediscovery of each other. There was a sense of inexperience and youth. In juxtaposition, the story had woven in deeper, and darker themes throughout. The shifting timelines added an interesting structure, eventually converging at the midpoint to help drive the narrative forward. What kept me engaged was the quiet air of mystery surrounding the two main characters. There’s clear potential to develop their backgrounds further and make them feel more personal and layered. Some of the side characters were interesting as well, but the main focus, and the most promise, remained with the leads. There were certain topics I wished the author had touched upon more that caught my intrigue, but never delved further (i.e., the mentioned he/him throughout). The story presents two main types of conflict: psychological and physical. Though they’re interconnected, the psychological conflict stands out at the core. It deals with themes of trauma, healing, and personal growth. The physical conflict, while present, felt more like a narrative device, occasionally introduced to move the plot along, but not explored in as much depth. When viewed as a lighter romance, this structure works and the story flows as the author intended. One of the main issues I encountered while reading was the writing style, particularly the dialogue. While there were moments where the conversations hinted at deeper emotional nuance, they often felt somewhat superficial and lacked the natural rhythm that makes dialogue feel truly alive. In several key scenes, where the emotional stakes were high, the exchanges came across as forced or unnatural, which made it difficult for me to fully connect with the characters or believe in their dynamics. That said, I want to emphasize that this may come down to personal preference. Other readers might not be as affected by this style, and I can see how some could find it fitting within the world the author has created. Despite this hurdle for me, it didn’t detract from my overall enjoyment of the plot. The story itself was engaging, with a clear sense of direction, and I found myself invested in where it was going. All in all, while the dialogue didn’t quite work for me, the strength of the story and its imaginative worldbuilding carried it through.
I'd like to thank Amal Kimal for giving me the opportunity to read an ARC of "A Light in the Arcane". With that, I will be giving my complete and honest opinion about this book.
I believe that the story itself was great. The characters have engaging backgrounds and have characteristics that make them relatable. Jaxon is definitely an amazing book boyfriend with so much to give, and his obsessiveness is top tier. Layla has a lot of depth to her character and a lot of relatable points for readers dealing with PTSD and anxiety. I applaud Amal Kimal for this genius second chance romance plot that contained some darker themes. I wouldn't consider this a true dark romance, I saw it more as a light gray romance, but readers should check the trigger warnings.
The reason I rate this at 2.5 stars though is the execution of the story. The past and present chapters felt very mixed up. Information given in the past didn't feel relevant or answer questions about what was happening in the present, making it feel like I was getting whiplash trying to keep up. I felt like I needed to bust out a whiteboard to track the information I was getting and how it all correlated. There was also an issue with the pacing, to where some chapters felt like there was too much going on within four pages while others felt like all fluff no plot. The progression of Jaxon and Layla's relationship in the present also felt odd and rushed. The spicy scenes were very vague and tiptoed around using genuine sexual terms, making it hard to remain immersed in the story, let alone envisioning what position they were in. There were also a few points where certain information was only hinted at in the beginning, then being treated as common knowledge without a grand reveal and explanation (such as Layla's father and his secrets). The random political topic drops also threw me for a loop, leaving me scratching my head and wondering how its relevant to the plot. I don't have a problem with political subjects being brought up in books, they just needed to be better incorporated and focused on what was relevant to the story.
There were many times I wanted to DNF this book, but I kept going because I wanted to give a complete honest review. This book isn't perfect, but for a debut novel I'd say this is pretty good. Every author has to start somewhere, and Amal Kimal has great potential in my eyes. This book does have some issues with pacing and keeping readers completely engaged with the story, so if you're looking for an easy read, I suggest waiting on starting this one. I do believe the author has a great story to tell with these characters, and I hope to see them improve their storytelling in their books to come. While I didn't particularly enjoy this book as a whole, I will be looking forward to reading the rest of the series in hopes of seeing Amal Kimal grow and flourish as a new author.
The lone survivor of an accident which took the life of her mother and brother, Layla finds comfort in her relationship with Jaxon; a boy with demons of his own. Years later, after life-altering events separated the two, Layla finds her past a little too close for comfort... but maybe all of her past wasn't bad. Maybe this one little part of her past will be a driving force of her new future.
This was a solid debut novel. While romantic contemporary is not a genre I'm overly familiar with, I was able to easily get pulled into the book. I only read my first romance novels this year (Harlequin Intrigue books don't count) and I'm definitely still getting used to spice, but I felt like this book was well balanced. More story than spice, but the spicy scenes were long enough to hopefully scratch that itch for readers.
The format of this book was different than anything else I've ever read. The first half alternating between then and now and the second half planted firmly in the now. I personally want to know more about what happened then. There's so much we still don't know. Also, there's no explanation of how the climax of the book is resolved. We know what happened but not why. I knew this was a series and some storylines may not wrap up in this book, but for me, there were too many loose threads.
All that said, it was an engaging read... I can't say enjoyable due to the heavy subject matter, but I did really like the book. The characters were well developed (I think I grew to love BFF Harlow the most), the plot was exciting, and I grew to care about the characters. This is a Read It, but check the trigger warnings first!
Note: I received an ARC of this book from the author.
If you like the following, then you will want to add this book to your TBR. Slow Burn, friends to lovers, 2nd chances, obsession, mafia, possessive MMC, plot twist, also please read the trigger warnings, there are very dark and emotional topics.
I have to say that there were times when I got lost in the book due to the story jumping from past and present a lot, I had to just stop and start again a few times. And do wish that there was more of the back story for the characters, felt we were missing information. There were unanswered questions, her father, the arrangement, what is? Who was she supposed to find? Even with not knowing these things, I do recommend this book.
“Let me carry some of your pain. Let me help you.”
Layla your FMC is running from her past, her father is mafia, and she had to break away she is doing her best to try to stay hidden and for him to not find her. She was the lone survivor of a tragic accident that took her mother and her brother. At that time, she had found comfort in Jaxon your MMC, and boy does he have his own demons. Something happened and they went their separate ways and now years later they finally meet again, and Layla is afraid her past would ruin her.
“Give me your sunshine, and I’ll show you how I can bask in it. Give me your demons, and I’ll show you how I can dance with you.”
Your FMC and MMC have been through hell and survived it, and it was nice to see the bond they had and had before they went their separate ways, time doesn’t always let you forget what you once had, and now they have to decide what it is that they need to do.
Oh my, the ending, I did not see that, devastated that was a semi hitting me head on!
First, thank you to Amal Kimal for an ARC copy of this one.
There was a lot of representation with this one. Including life with a chronically ill best friend, especially one who has a silent illness and can have good days so she "looks normal". Aaradhya, her high school friend who has synesthesia and deals with racial prejudice, as well as Jaxon who has a deeply scarring childhood. At times it was a lot, and it felt like these lost ones came together.
Layla has been kept almost as a prisoner in her own home, though her depression and lack of fight has made her father lax in his defenses. With help from her friend Harlow, she takes a chance and moves at a moment of weakness. A flight across the country gets her a new home, and a new life, but will they give up? Or will they come looking for her?
The details are a little vague, it's not clear how Layla came to know Harlow, or got the resources to leave. The looks into the past are clear at times, and other times they're veiled in mystery that never seems to become clear. There are a lot of questions even by the end, especially with the mysterious "him" that the father was trying to keep safe.
The characters do well to make the book, and I feel like there was a good balance of friends and outside life with a couple that is very obsessed with one another. They are consumed at times, and stay in the bubble of each other, but keep the world outside in focus I felt.
I feel like this book definitely had its moments, there were things that could have been built on a little better, but it kept me intrigued and I really enjoyed Jaxon and Layla's journey to find each other.
Thank you so much, Amal Kimal, for the ARC! 💌 The writing style was very different from what I’m used to, so I found it a little difficult to get into the first half of the book. It alternates between past and present, which took a moment to adjust to but once I hit the second half, things became much more engaging, and I truly enjoyed seeing how the story unfolded.
This is a haunting tale about two people, Layla and Jaxon, each grappling with their own demons and trying to heal in the aftermath of trauma.
✨ The Synopsis: Layla is struggling to keep up with life after a devastating accident, haunted by her past and desperate to move on. When she crosses paths with Jaxon, a man whose own demons echo hers. Their connection feels inevitable. For Layla, the yearning to stay grows stronger, even as danger lurks everywhere… and the worst monsters are the ones in her mind.
After seizing a chance to escape, Layla vows not to make the same mistakes again. She’s determined to build a normal life, stay hidden, and never look back. But fate has other plans when Jaxon collides into her world, and suddenly, survival becomes more complicated than ever.
💔 She has a past that chases her and is too haunted to do anything but run. 🖤 He has a loyalty that can break him and cannot do anything but follow. And their world? A nightmare that refuses to let go.
While some parts of the story felt a bit unclear and I wished for a deeper dive into the characters’ struggles, the emotional payoff in the ending made it worth the read.
For a debut novel, this read definitely captivated me and I enjoyed this story, even for this emotional rollercoaster it put me on.
I'm going to struggle here with this review, only because I want to give so much details but there are things in here you need to experience yourself as you read this story. I will say, this writing style was very unique and well done. This book will flip between a then vs now timeframe. We are given so much detail straight away in the first half of this book. Our FMC has/is going through so much trauma, the build to her story and to understand it was well done. Although I felt like I could have used 'more' in the end. It's going to encompass struggles and hard truths for these characters, some that might feel eerily familiar to some, in how hard the world can be during this stage of life. What I did love was the connections and the personalities between then all and the balance between love/romance and spice was also blended well. There is also a lot of depth in this plot and mystery of this storyline and know not all will be answered here. The ended, just as they always do, hit me like a bag of bricks.
I truly did enjoy this and if you like; light mafia, mental health rep, second chance, friends to lovers and college settings then you will want to try this one for yourself.
This story is going to follow a mental health journey and can cover topics not suitable for all readers, please make sure to check your trigger warnings before giving this book a try.
A Light In The Arcane is a second-chance romance with a touch of light mafia trope and I adored every bit of it. The writing style pulled me in immediately, the plot kept me hooked, and I especially loved the way the story unfolded through the “then” and “now” timeline.
Jaxon completely stole my heart. He’s such a considerate, sweet, and kind boyfriend, the way he treats Layla, and the way he calls her “ya qalbi” (my heart)… I swear, I was melting every time I read that name. 🫠
On the other side, Layla’s pain and guilt were absolutely heartbreaking. Her emotional journey gave the book so much depth and made me feel every ache in her story.
⚠️ A little reminder: please check the trigger warnings before diving in.
If you’re a fan of second-chance romance and want a hint of mafia intrigue, this book deserves a spot on your TBR. Highly recommend! 💕 Tropes ❤️ Second Chance College Setting Friends to Lovers Sweet MMC Light Mafia
My favorite quotes:
“Because slowly, but stubbornly, you became everything that mattered to me. You mean more to me than my past, more than my demons, more than my wishes and dreams”
“I know I don’t really say it, and I don’t really show it, but you were the light of my life in a time I really needed it, and you are now, too. Every time you laugh or smile, it’s like it burns away all the things that haunt me, and when you’re not smiling, I think of what I can do to bring it back. When you hurt, I hurt, and when you thrive, you light me up like the sun.”
Let me just start by saying—I LOVED this mafia romance it’s been awhile since I’ve read anything mafia and this one threw me back heart first 🥹. A Light in the Arcane totally hooked me with its dark, mysterious vibes, and the slow-burning tension between Layla and Jaxon was everything I didn’t know I needed. Their relationship had this magnetic push-and-pull that kept me turning pages way past midnight. Now, the plot twist? Absolutely wild. I literally gasped. I was confused for a second (not gonna lie), but once things clicked, I was like—oh, okay, Jaxon is a total badass and I love him even more now. His loyalty, his layers, and that intense protectiveness over Layla? Chef's kiss 😘🤌🏼 (Even his nicknames has me swooning 😫) One thing that did leave me scratching my head a bit was the mystery around Layla’s dad. Like… who exactly was he telling her to find? I felt like that could’ve been a bit clearer, but maybe that’s something that’ll come together more in the next book!! Also, let me warn you now: this is a SLOW. BURN. Like, glacial slow. But honestly? The payoff is so worth it. When it finally got spicy near the end—delicious. Totally worth the wait and I’m thankful for the wait, the build up to their intimacy was necessary to understand the connection they have! 🥹 Overall, A Light in the Arcane is a moody, gripping mafia romance with secrets, and a couple you can’t help but root for. Can’t wait to see where the story goes next!

Just finished A Light in the Arcane and I need book two—there has to be a sequel, right?!
This story took me on an emotional rollercoaster from the very first page. Layla’s life is shattered after losing her mother and brother in a tragic accident. Her father, consumed by grief and buried deep in the mafia, becomes a distant stranger, and Layla blames herself for it all.
Amid the darkness, she meets Jaxon—a boy who’s endured his own heartbreak after the senseless murder of his mother. Forced to change his name and deny his culture, Jaxon still manages to be a beacon of hope and warmth for Layla. Their connection is instant, real, and unforgettable.
But fate tears them apart.
Layla is trapped for years in a life she never chose, isolated by the mafia and bound by a promise to a man she doesn’t love. When she finally breaks free and escapes across the country, the last person she expects to run into is Jaxon—and their love reignites, stronger than ever.
As secrets unravel and past wounds resurface, Layla and Jaxon are forced to confront everything they’ve tried to forget. In the end, they must fight—not just for the life they want, but for each other.
If you love intense romance, forbidden love, found family, and characters who fight their way out of the dark, A Light in the Arcane is your next must-read. I couldn't put it down—and now I’m desperate for more.

Thank you so much to the author for an early copy of this book in exchange for my honest review!
Unfortunately I didn’t love this book as much as I was hoping to. The first 50% was definitely better than the second, but there were just some stuff I couldn’t get over. I was really drawn in but the description of this book and thought it would be right up my alley, but I thought the execution was a bit messy. The characters (especially the FMC) felt very childish and naïve for their age and the circumstances they were in. After the 50% mark I also started to get quite bored because it was at that point that the main couple officially got together. So for like 40% it was just following them being a couple and kind of no other part of the plot. I would have been fine if it was just a chapter or two of that, or if we just focused more on the plot, but none of that happened, so gradually I started to dislike the book the further I read. By the time I was reading the last 15% I wasn’t really invested in what would happen to the characters and was just reading to finish it. I’m quite disappointed that this didn’t work for me, but I can see elements that other readers would love.
Thank you Amal Kimal for an advanced e-copy of this book!
This is a slow burn, with a friends to lovers vibe but also a little suspensey mystery in there since the FMC has a crazy family dynamic! Some organized crime alluded to and drugs/drug use mentioned. I felt like this was a pretty angsty read, it got less so near the second half but it was still kinda there. It is set in a college setting, though has flash backs to high school years for the first half of the book, then it’s all present tense.
This is all told from the FMCs POV, no shifting POVs or narrator voice. I kinda wish we got some MMC POVs, but it’s not really missed.
The plot was defs eye catching, I was hooked into the mystery of who some key players were and we got some answers but not all. This is a standalone so there isn’t a cliffhanger but I was left kind going ??? Over one detail that I won’t spoil cuz maybe it was just a me thing 😅 but it stuck out enough that it will now haunt me 😂 this was a longer read, about 450+ pages I believe, so it took a while to read through 😂
The spice! This is open door spice, it is a veeerrryyy slooowww burn. Spicy spice happens at about 70% through the book, and we got all the scenes within a quick span.
Before anything please check your trigger warnings and be prepared for some pretty dark topics to be addressed from the start. This can be a very emotional read for some . The writing style of the author is a little different than what I’m used to which made it difficult to feel drawn in at the start. It’s more of a YA read vs the dark romances I’ve read. Even with it being labeled a “diet” DR.
You get two people trying to navigate through very dark and toxic issues . The first third of the book or so we dive into some heavy stuff . While I wouldn’t consider this a “dark” romance in the least there are some darker topics that get brought up in the story. It takes a bit to really feel drawn to the characters , but it does keep you invested in finding out more at the same time .
There is a lot of confusing parts with the back and forth and not everything makes sense all the time . I felt like the plot got drawn out in certain parts and too much information was given in others . There wasn’t much that kept me wanting to move forward . I truly do root for them to have their HEA but felt like it could have been shortened and focused more on the now .
“When did I start letting the demons win? Will there ever be a day I once again hide them so successfully no one can ever see them? Will they ever go back into their cage?” Thank you to the author for the ARC opportunity. I recommend checking the trigger warnings for this book, as it dwells into some heavier themes that may be uncomfortable for some readers. The story revolves around Layla(FMC) and we see how she deals with survivors guilt after her mom and brother die in a car accident. She manages to break away from her father and his mafia connections, searching for a fresh start at college. She meets up with Harlow, her roommate and online bestie. While trying to establish this new life, she reencounters Jaxon(MMC), a past love interest. The story switches timelines back and forth between the past and present for most of the first half of the book. It’s my first time encountering this style and I wasn’t really liking. However, the bonding between the main characters is something that stuck out to me. It can be felt throughout the story, even if their bonding stemmed from unfortunate events in their lives. I really loved their growth in trying to deal with their own inner demons while fighting to stay by each others side.
Wow! Wow! WOW! Is all I can really say. The story of Jaxon and Layla captivated me from the very beginning! I loved the dual timeline of Then and Now that I felt really enabled me to see what happened in Layla’s past and how Jaxon was entwined in it and how he comes back into her life. I loved seeing their relationship essentially pick up where it left off and bloom and grow.
Let’s talk Tropes!! This book had quite a few tropes and I was here for it! In addition to being a romance, it was also a light mafia romance which was a first for me but made the plot so much more interesting (my opinion - it would have been great without the mafia element as well). We also have friends to lovers, second-chance romance (reuniting), dual timeline, “it’s always been you,” a golden retriever but morally unhinged MMC, and all of this is wrapped up in a cute little college setting.
I will say please read the trigger warnings of this book before diving in. There were a few moments that were slightly triggering for me but luckily they were usually just brief mentions and therefore I continued reading and am so glad I did.
Before I get into my thoughts and feelings about this book, thank you so much Amal for the opportunity to read this beautiful story. I really much enjoyed it.💋🖤
This book contains some pretty heavy trigger warnings. I advise that you look through them carefully first before diving into this story. Your mental health matters.♥️♥️
I honestly loved this book, these characters hold a special place in my heart. This book made me feel so many emotions, I barely knew what i was doing. The character development was amazing, not just with the main characters but with the side characters as well. You can see a lot of build up and connections between each character. I loved the tension and the sweet moments in the story, despite the tragic moments between family and friends that got me gasping, soul crushing, and shedding a few tears. The love Jaxon and Layla share is beyond beautiful. A chance of second love, one they both deserve.♥️♥️💋
Overall, this book was very beautiful, I loved it so much, & I can’t stop thinking about this book. These characters hold a special place in my mind and soul. (Especially Jax.💋🖤) Thank you so much Amal.💋♥️
You definitely want to check out the tropes and the trigger warnings before delvine into this book.
This book deals with some heavy subject matter and the author starts the book basically diving into the deep mental health elements. This book can be very emotional.
There is so much trauma to deal with and unpack but I feel like the author did a good job in the first twenty five percent of the book basically laying all that out.
In the first part of this book we kind of get taken between then and now. This gives us a better understanding of what happened in the past so that we can understand moving forward what Layla's had to deal with.
Jaxon is a very endearing character that I was immediately drawn to. He has a kind soul and generally seems to care. He wants to make sure that Layla is okay no matter what. His dedication and loyalty to her made this story even better.
I don't want to give anything away but I'll say be prepared to be taken on an emotional rollercoaster but it's worth it.
I’ll start off by saying this book is listed as a “diet” dark romance. It is definitely no where near the dark romance books I’ve read. I felt like this was more of a YA coming of age, diet mafia romance.
The friends to lovers, from young school kids to adults was great. I loved how Jaxon never gave up his obsession for finding & saving Layla from her dad’s mafia ring. But the story barely mentions the mafia and it’s close to the end when they try to come for her.
I do feel as though the story kept drifting away from the plot, making it hard to stay focused. It just seems like some parts are left unfinished or not complete, while other parts veered off to unnecessary details.
The storyline was there, though. I love the HEA we get with Jaxon & Layla.
Favorite quotes: “Let me carry some of your pain. Let me help you.”
“We’ve taken the stories we’ve been given— a girl running from the mafia & a boy surviving his demons— & rewritten them into something better. Something ours.”
ARC Review ahead: It took me a while to really start to enjoy this book. I’m used to punchy plot lines and characters that make me love them right from the start but the author delves deeply into the dark side of mental health and unhealthy coping mechanisms which can be a heavy thing to read, especially right at the start of a book. Layla, the FMC has so much emotional baggage to unpack that it takes a long time to really get to know her and fall in love with her as a character. Jaxon, on the other hand is loveable from the first time we read about him. From Layla’s point of view we see him as heart achingly sweet and devoted right from the outset. The story switches between the present and the past for the first half of the book before staying in the present for the second half (there’s a reason for this but I don’t like posting spoilers so you’ll have to read it to find out why). There is one piece of the plot that we are left with no answers to and considering the next book is about a different couple I do wonder how we will get a conclusion for it.
I received this book as an arc in exchange for an honest review.
Quick summary:
Layla is broken from her past. She decides to secretly leave her dad and start a new life on the other side of the country. She makes a good friend and reconnects with her first love.
Opinion: Honestly, this book is fairly slow. There’s action only in the last 10%. It’s not a bad book, but from the synopsis, I expected more action with the monsters lurking to drag her back. It mostly is a sweet story about 2 people with trauma finding and helping each other.
There are bits that are confusing and not explained. The dad makes an arrangement regarding her when she is 15. She is now in her 20’s so why hasn’t this been finalized? The dad keeps on talking about “him”. That all this was to save him. I have a theory, the only one that makes sense to me, but it’s never explained and, well, I guess he wasn’t saved after all.
this book was just such a gem to read!!!! i cannot count how many times i laughed, giggled, screamed, cried, and sobbed while reading. only my notes and highlights can attest to that 🤧
i absolutely enjoyed the dual timelines, a big lover of them actually. i really loved how the two timelines give a glimpse into what Layla's character and past was, without really overlapping or sharing too much that coincides with the current chapter.
and Jaxon, my newest addiction and obsession. CAN I MARRY YOU PLEASE? don't be fooled by his golden retriever, cinnamon roll personality, he will definitely 🔪 you.
there are some dark elements, so please READ THE TRIGGER WARNINGS. Layla's head can be pretty hard, with many mental health issues and trauma that some people may relate to. both Jaxon and Layla are just two broken souls that help heal one another.
and the TWIST!!!! i had a very small hunch about it, but when it was revealed, i was still surprised! this was just a wild ride 🥹😭
This book was very on the different side. In the beginning, the back and forth chapters of past to present were confusing. The past chapters did not really correlate to the things happening in the present chapters. I stuck with it because I just kept hoping for a left turn to come around but nothing really happened. I feel like Part 1 could have been condensed down a lot. When Part 2 began, things started to really take off for Jaxson and Layla. But sadly, we were given a lot of information about things that did not really matter in the importance of the story line but when it came to things in the story line, we were given little to no detail. I feel like it would have been far more enjoyable if we had been given the extra details that applied to the story line and the people involved in it.
First off, Jaxon may be my newest book bf, if I even thought I could tear him away from Layla. I will always melt at an obsessive/possessive MMC.
I love Layla's character - she feels very much how I wanted to be in high school but was too shy to ever try.
The back and forth between Then and Now? Such good build up.
I love that the beginning had subtle hints, but didn't straight up tell us what was going on with Layla's family. It makes it hit you that much harder in the second half.
The end hit me like a TRUCK. Had absolutely no idea it was going to go that hard that fast?? I literally gasped out loud at work, and it's quiet in here at night. 😅
This was an ARC and I was super excited about it! But unfortunately at this time I have stopped reading it. As much as I have picked up and put this book down over the last month I did enjoy it in quiet moments. The pace was just too slow for me to really stay with when I have alot of other arcs to read aswell. When I have time to sit and just simmer in a book I will be picking this up to finish as I skimmed through the remaining half of the book to see if it’d pick up some and it looks like it does. And I would really like to finish it out one day. It’s def a book younger me would have eat up but in my thirty’s and in my smutty era I’m kinda leaning towards more mature content right now. Thank you to the author for gifting me the ARC the opinions stated above are my honest thoughts given freely.
The epitome of "distance only makes the heart grow fonder."
There's something about reading a book that keeps you intrigued with all the mystery and the questions. You'd think you'd give up at some point. But no, I was just hooked. And every minute with Layla and Jaxon was an amazing one.
One, he's the puppiest of all the puppies I've ever read about. And truthfully, that's pretty much most of what I cared about. You can't read this and not just want to make him happy.
And two, ofc this is an actual list, is the mystery. There were so many things, so many tangled up threads that when it untangled I felt pretty satisfied. Sure there were still questions, but this is the first to more. Hopefully they get brought up then.
Don't get too caught up in the love and the light; the stronger it shines, the darker the shadows that are waiting to pounce.
I loved this book! There were times I was gasping and crying. And then there was a moment in the book when my grin was so huge and I was wiggling in my seat and kicking my feet at how sweet the words were. Jaxson is book boyfriend goals. The way he takes care of Layla and anticipates her needs. He is everything. And Layla loves him. She is able to open up and be honest with him more than any other person. But I kept wondering why she wouldn't just tell him about her dad or what happened in those 5/6 years. And lastly, I really want to know who "he" is that her dad keeps talking about. I have my guesses and I really hope we find out in the next books.
Thank you Amal for the advance copy of the book. I enjoyed it so much!
I wanted to love this book. I love a good (not so) white knight coming in to save the girl and show her the beauty in the world. However.
The high school scenes were just not it. The dialogue is cliche, and it doesn’t read very realistic at all. It pulled me out until I had to put it down and try again another day.
Some parts were just unbelievable for me: they’re basically soulmates but they’ve slept in the same bed for 4ish months without touching each other? I had whiplash trying to figure out if they were virgins newly together or an old comfortable married couple. Jaxon’s background story gave me the same feeling of disbelief.
The premise could really go somewhere. I don’t think it’s a lost cause; this just wasn’t the read for me.

Thank you to the author for the opportunity to read and review this e-ARC!
I absolutely loved this book. I really enjoyed the story between Layla and Jaxson while they explored young/first love and coming back together after years apart. They are two broken souls who were brought together by their trauma as they helped healed one another.
The story has some very dark elements READ THE TRIGGER WARNINGS. Being inside Layla's head can be pretty hard, especially if you have a personal history of similar feelings like hers (ie. your mind telling you that you're not enough). She also has her fair share of trauma and PTSD. There were parts of her story that were absolutely soul crushing.
Overall, I very much enjoyed the story and look forward to the next book in the series.
