When Octavia Helsing's cousin dies mysteriously, she finds herself the sole heir to their family legacy, Helsing's School for Monsters and Other Evil Creatures where more than just vampires and shifters roam the halls. A Harry Potter and Twilight mash-up with forbidden love, slow burn, mistaken identity, forced proximity, witty banter, deadly mysteries, and alluring world-building, this fade-to-black series is great for anyone who loves magical, academy adventure sprinkled with mystery and romance.
The reason this book got three stars is because I couldn't do a half. I truly probably feel like it is a three and a half star book The reason being is that it is only 392 pages long and a continuously saw myself putting this book down and walking away due to losing interest. Granted the story in the plot line is great and the writer does a good job in developing the characters and the magic system. However there was a lot of detail that could have been omitted and the The book would have been a little bit shorter. I felt like it repeated itself many times related to the main FMC. Granted many people will find this book rather entertaining, I just struggled to hold my attention through it. I'm not sure if I will continue reading the series.
This felt like a mix of Harry Potter, School for good and evil, and Wednesday series, where a teen unexpectedly discovers there is a whole supernatural world, and they've been thrown headfirst into a school of monsters and now have to adapt and survive. There is the family legacy of the Helsings, and their youngest descendant has big shoes to fill, enemies to avoid, mysteries to solve and her new awakened magic to tame. I liked the gothic vibes, the range of beings, the school drama, and all the intrigue. If you're after a YA magic academia adventure, with ghouls, vampires, shifters and more, a human teen navigating secrets and trying to solve a murder and cover up, this is the book for you. This was a good start to the series, and leaves you wanting more.
When Octavia attends her cousin’s funeral, she quickly realizes something is amiss and is thrust into an unexpected world of the supernatural. I enjoyed the twist on the Dracula and Abraham Van Helsing legacy, combined with elements reminiscent of Harry Potter (but in a mix of high School/ college setting).
However, I found myself wishing for more world-building and additional information about the school and the various types of supernatural beings. I felt there were too many unnecessary plotlines, as if the author were trying to introduce too many new elements without expanding enough on them, which made the story feel less cohesive. Despite these criticisms, I would like to continue the series in the hopes that it develops richer world-building and character depth.
This is the first book in a series and the first book I’ve read by this author. In the vein of the Crush series, the majority of the plot takes place in a school for magical creatures. Like Harry Potter, the main character, Octavia Helsing, arrives with a bit of notoriety. I found the first chapter a bit rough but by the end of the book, I was invested in the characters. I’ll definitely be impatiently waiting for the next book.
Helsing’s School for monsters and other evil creatures book 1
💀💀 This book is such a great read. If you love paranormal and mysteries you need to read this book now. It’s Harry Potter meets Crave. A human girl finds out she is the only remaining heir to take over as the headmistress of the school for monster which she didn’t even know existed. So come join Helsing’s School for monsters and other evil creatures 💀💀
Absolutely addictive! Octavia’s journey through Helsing’s School is full of magic, mystery, and slow-burn romance. The mix of monsters, witty banter, and dark secrets had me hooked from start to finish.
Octavia Helsing grew up in the mundane world with no clue about the existance of supernaturals. That is, until her cousin dies and she becomes the sole heir of the Helsing family. Now she must learn everything she can while surrounded by monsters that want to kill her.
I loved this! We get an FMC that stands up for herself and others in the face of injustice, magic, a hot mysterious vampire, an interesting group of friends that we are never 100% sure we can trust, and humor.
"They looked like the Goth version of Mean Girls." 🤣🤣🤣
It doesn't end on a huge cliffhanger but nothing is wrapped up and I am now obsessed with this family of outcasts and also terrified that a character I love will end up betraying us. I cannot wait to read the next book!!
This book series has so much potential and I'm looking forward to watching Octavia's story unfold. I love a good rag-tag mystery solving crew that gets themselves into some sticky situations.
