Into the Night #1

A Midnight Romance

River-

Heroes don’t hide in the dark, but I do.
Our paths were never meant to cross. She could have died that night, and I saw the fear in her eyes–the same fear as I put into countless others, but I could not walk away. I’ve been watching her daily, believing it is to ensure her safety, so when she asks me for help, I cannot refuse. When the blood dries and the screams fade, she’ll finally understand this was never about her revenge. It’s about the monster I am and not sharing what is mine.

Lux--

They broke me. Took everything and left me with nothing but rage. As a crime writer, I craft my stories to give victims back their voice. But I have become the story, and if I don’t rewrite my own, how can I continue to rewrite others? Now, I live for vengeance. Saved by a serial killer himself, I’m not only intrigued by his methods, but his obsession with me. I need his help to rid the world of the monsters who hurt me. When he agrees, I do not know whether to be fearful of the darkness in him or what he has unlocked in me.

What to expect: protective stalking, vigilante justice, morally grey characters, toxic obsession, fast attraction, psychological suspense, feminine rage, revenge and dual POV.

🚩Please review content warnings before reading.

This book is a dark romantic thriller that blends romance and suspense. Expect morally grey choices, obsessive protection, fast-paced romance, action, and emotional intensity over graphic horror.

Okay, this book gave me diet Midfuck series vibes mixed with a touch of the show Arrow, you know, the whole billionaire vigilante thing. Except River is darker, more dangerous, and one of his favorite hobbies is… light stalking.🤭😮‍💨

What starts as an innocent night out with her sister quickly turns into Lux’s worst nightmare. But don’t worry her knight in shining balaclava swoops in, saves her, and takes her home safely. And that’s where the obsession begins. He casually starts sitting outside her house every day, following her around, and installing cameras in her townhouse which, personally, I find to be top-tier romance behavior. Then he convinces her to move in with him, and I was eating up that forced proximity.

Not only does River protect her, but he also helps her get her revenge by teaching her how to kill the people who wronged her. It’s a beautiful little story of vengeance and healing wrapped up in dark romance packaging. He was so supportive and patient.

River has a bit of that quiet, dark, mysterious energy. There are two sides to him: the charming, suited-up billionaire by day and the ruthless predator by night. We love a well-rounded king. And when that well-rounded king flips his hat backwards? Yeah, I was barking like a dog.

The storyline was genuinely interesting and held my attention the best it could (especially considering I was fighting daylight savings and falling asleep every 14 seconds) I really loved that instead of Lux magically turning into a badass overnight, River guided her through her revenge arc. She has real trauma and PTSD, and she works through it slowly throughout the story, which made their relationship feel more grounded and emotional.

Overall, this is a great beginner dark romance it’s got a solid plot, good spice, and maybe even a little crawling (courtesy of our MMC 👀). The setup for book two looks so promising, and I’m ready for more.

A midnight romance is dark stalker romance. The plot was interesting and the pace was good . I loved the main characters so much . Dark romance is hit or a miss for me because I hate when the MMCs treat the FMCs like crap and when the FMCs are spineless but in this book this was not the case at all. Our MMC ‘ River ‘ was kind of a man who would give her the matches and watch her set the world on fire ; he helps her find out her own strength and take revenge on the ones who have hurt her . It reminded me a bit of Harley Quinn and the joker but the MMC was more of a Batman than a joker if you know what I mean .
The FMC was a novelist who writes a crime novels and her dad was in the police. She was strong despite what happened to her and I liked seeing her getting her own justice . The only thing I didn’t love about this book is the insta lust (it’s not an insta love ) as it isn’t a personal favorite of mine other than that I loved their relationship .
The side characters were good also I think the author is planing to write about Sebastian ( the MMC’s cousin ) next and if I’m guessing right Stevie (the FMC’s sister ) is going to be the love interest.

Overall I of course recommend this book if you love any of the tropes above . just check the trigger warning before reading it ( it has sexual assault not by the MMC )

I was in a dark romance mood and really liked the premise of this story; morally grey protective unaliver MMC, vengeful FMC, working together to bring down a ring of bad guys. To me, though, it could've been executed better.

I didn't like the sudden jump where the FMC, Lux, is at the club and then found by the MMC, River. I didn't really feel any chemistry between the main characters. I honestly felt as annoyed as Sebastian was that River just brought Lux into the fold lol. I kept pushing through, hoping that maybe it would click for me at some point, but unfortunately it didn't :/

Thank you to Luna Literary for the opportunity to read this ARC 💕

This book met my expectations, which were VERY HIGH. I devoured it in no time, I swear I couldn't put it down. I found the plot very original, and the MMC was a real treat (except for the numerous red flags).

I loved both protagonists; their relationship began with River's obsession with Lux only after seeing her once. That's why it was a slow burn that didn't last long by my standards, but it was still quite tense. I recommend checking the trigger warnings before reading!
While reading, it reminded me a bit of a mix between Haunting Adeline and Butcher & Blackbird (some scenes I found hilarious, but I think that's just my perception).

If you love a good stalker romance, this one is for you. The revenge plot was so well-done, and I kept getting Batman-retelling vibes in the best possible way. Our FMC being a thriller author who pulls inspiration from her dad’s real cases added such a cool layer to the story. It hit all the dark-romance beats I wanted, kept me hooked, and delivered the perfect mix of obsession, mystery, and intensity.

And yes… a new book nickname has officially been added: Raven.

I devoured this book!

I appreciated how the relationship between the two main characters developed slowly and intentionally. I haven’t seen that much in dark romance, so that was a since surprise to see! At first River was intrigued by Lux and then when he got to know her and saw how strong she was he truly fell for her. He made it his mission to protect her and I couldn’t get enough of it.

Loved that it was a slow burn, because when it finally paid off, I WAS READY 🔥

The vibes. The story. River and Lux. I ate it up!

ARC Review of ‘Midnight Romance’ by MJ Huxley.

I enjoyed this book! From start to finish it had me hooked.
It isn’t your usual stalker serial killer scenario, so when that plot twist came up, I was hooked even more! Love me a good villain! And that’s all I am gonna say about that as to not spoil the book.
Lux’s character is lovable, just plain down to earth, she is a writer, more of a stay at home girl who suddenly gets thrust in the dark world.
River, River, River, let me wipe the drool of my chin. I love a character that has those dark streaks to be used for good.
He has his demons and takes care of them, deals with them in a way that made me smirk while reading.
Their chemistry was very nice, enough🌶️ too.
And that ending??!!🤯🤯
Was totally expecting the usual coming up book 2 vibes, but the hint to something more was yes!! Sign me up! This definitely feels maybe a 3 book series or 4🤣🫣

ARC Review of A Midnight Romance by M.J. Huxley🐦‍⬛🔪🔫💄💘

I seriously devoured this book. From the very beginning, it pulled me in, and it just kept surprising me in the best way.

This wasn’t your typical stalker/serial killer setup. There were twists I didn’t see coming, and when they hit, I was hooked even harder. And River… oh my god, River. Dark, broody, protective, fighting his demons in his own messed-up-but-somehow-sexy way. He had me smirking like an idiot more times than I want to admit. Lux, on the other hand, felt so relatable — down-to-earth, quiet, living her own little writer life until she gets thrown headfirst into this shadowy, dangerous world. Their chemistry built slowly, and honestly, I loved that it was a slow burn, because when it finally exploded? It was worth every second of the wait.

The world-building was captivating—suspenseful, emotional, and dark in just the right way. The Poe-inspired touches, like River calling Lux “Raven,” gave the story a beautiful, poetic edge.

And can we talk about that ending?! That ending made me want to grab the next book ASAP. Also, Sebastian and Stevie?? If they don’t end up together, I’m rioting.

A fantastic debut dark romance — addictive, full of danger and passion, with characters that feel so real. Definitely a must-read.

Okay MJ I’m totally ready for this dark romance era of yours!! I’m obsessed with this one! I ATE IT UP! This was completely a one sitting read for me. Lux I just adored and totally could be besties with! River is the reason for my obsession with this book! Omg at so many points my mouth was on the floor and I had to pick it up because of him. River was just so protective of Lux when falling and ugh just took my heart. Those two together once we finally got it (slow burn was burning) was just perfect!! Overall I totally recommend adding to your tbr!

2.5 ⭐️ rounding to 3.

When I first picked this up, I was so excited — a vigilante stalker romance? Say less. The first half had me hooked, and I was fully invested in where it was going. But the second half… it just fell flat for me. I wanted more — more suspense, more tension, more unpredictability. Instead, it all felt a little too easy to see coming.

🚨 Possible spoilers ahead 🚨

Lux, our FMC, is the daughter of a police lieutenant — and he’s a very present, involved father. So when she instantly falls for her stalker (who also happens to be a serial killer — think Dexter but with a romance arc), I struggled to buy in. There’s even a scene with plastic covering the room that gave full Dexter vibes. Then Lux not only accepts him, but starts actively participating in his killings. Yes, it’s framed as revenge for what was done to her, but I was craving more hesitation, more inner conflict, more depth to her choices.

What threw me even more was how quickly she told her sister about it all — and her sister just… went with it. This is the same sister who grew up with that same cop father, and yet there’s zero pushback or moral struggle.

In the end, the characters felt surface-level and the plot became too predictable. I ended up skimming most of the second half, which was disappointing given how strong the setup was.

ARC REVIEW

A really good first dark romance for this author. If you want to read a stalker dark romance that's not too dark, but still very captivating, this is for you.

This story was very interesting with Lux being a crime novelist and River being the billionaire tech bachelor with the vigilante activities after dark (very Batman & I'm here for it). I really appreciated the slow burn of how their relationship built with understanding of their true selves and SO MUCH PASSION. The plot of this book was hitting the suspense, emotional, and dark elements. The Edgar Allan Poe elements throughout the story was really poetic with both River & Lux liking him, to River giving Lux the pet name "Raven", to the actual Raven that would visit River at his office window.

This book was written very well with the pace of the plot, the interesting plot twists, and the chemistry between River and Lux. I'm hoping for another book with Sebastian (River's cousin) and Stevie (Lux's sister) cause that tension and awkward silences between them had me in a chokehold too!!

I’m enjoying more and more Dark Romances 🖤and this one has been really entertaining … from the start, this book had me glued to the pages 🫢 it’s suspenseful, intriguing, solid plot and kind of … romantic? Dark dark of course but romantic nonetheless...👀

Now, let’s talk characters…

River, I love youuuu!!!! Completely obsessed, possessive, stalker, killer .. just perfection! 🏃🏻‍♀️
Lux, I wasn’t expecting that. My heart broke 💔 but seeing you take control was empowering 🔥

The dynamic between River and Lux is ✨addictive✨ It’s dark, it’s twisted, but it works!! It’s like two broken people found their missing pieces in each other through trauma and revenge and yes, totally makes sense … and yes, totally rooting for them 🫢

Side characters were strong as well, especially Sebastian (and the crew) 😮‍💨 He’s loyal, fierce and the balance River so much needed. Can’t wait to see more of them in upcoming books 👀

So yes, this one has everything a Dark Romance needs:
Obsession? ✔️
Revenge? ✔️
Emotional damage?✔️
Spice?✔️

And I’m eager (and a little scared👀) to see what the next one will bring.

I liked what I read, for the most part. Didn't completely hit the mark for me.
There's an abrupt jump from the club to River finding Lux, that all could have flowed a little better. The chemistry between the characters wasn't all there for me either. I was like Sebastian wondering why River is bringing this random girl into their operation. Like he immediately just spilled all their secrets to her!! For sometime that doesn't trust easily he immediately trusted her. I know it was the insta-love making itself known, but it just didn't seem to fit to me.
I'm guessing if there's another book it will center around Sebastian and Stevie. A little loathe to love action, maybe?

A Midnight Romance delivers a solid story filled with so much tension, plenty of passion and obsessive behaviors. This dark romance gave me all the Dexter and Batman vibes without being too dark.

The connection between River and Lux started with his obsession but if definitely ended up being electric. Matching each other’s energy and finding themselves at the same time, it felt like these two could conquer the world together.

This is the author’s first dark romance and I cannot wait to see where she goes next, especially after all that tension between Sebastian and Stevie.

A Midnight Romance brings a suspenseful love story that will have you at the edge of your seat. 3.5

I am one who rarely approaches dark romances, and when I do it's with some trepidation, but I really felt at ease with this dark romantic suspense narrative. I think in great part because the romance itself isn't dark. Yes River is very obsessively vigilant of Lux, but he also comes to deeply respect her. Including her wants and choices, even if it means heading to the front line of sorts in River's intent to hunt down and end evil men. Especially the men who hurt Lux. This narrative allows Lux to embrace her own power and reclaim her stolen agency. And I really, really appreciated this so much!

I also really loved the second half of the book. I admittedly took a bit to warm up to the beginning but that second half won me over. I went from rather distracted in my reading to completely honed in! And it left me wanting more stories beyond this one, specifically to explore if perhaps there may be something between Sebastian and Stevie.

Fingers crossed there is! I will absolutely be seated for it!

Thank you to Luna Literary for this eARC! I leave this honest review voluntarily.

What a compulsively good read! Thank you to Luna Literary and M.J Huxley for the privilege of being able to read this arc!

I have been in fantasy and fluffy romance territory for awhile and really wanted to dip my toes back into dark romance. What a book to get me back over to the dark side!

River kind of reminded me of a mix of Dexter and Hannibal but with more depth and wayy hotter! I loved his ability to make Lux feel safe and to help her heal. He never claimed to be a hero or acts like one but you’re still fully team River through it all.

At some points it was hard to read Lux’s POV because she was so painfully relatable and I could identify with some of her rage. You just want to hand her the matches so she can watch the world burn 😈

The chemistry and tension between them was so well written and the spice was spicing!! I cannot wait to see where the story goes from here because that ending has left me needing more!

The plot and the premise of the book were super intriguing to me. I love a good feminine rage book, where the FMC is wronged and she gets her revenge. I am aware that that I was reading an ARC, so I did not count the grammar issues or misspellings into my rating [though I hope they do get fixed in the released version]. My rating reflects that the book had a few plot holes that needed to be sewed up, as well as portions of the story that jumped all around, or sections where something was repeated or inconsistent with previous sections of the chapter.

I liked the story, I liked the characters, and I am looking forward to learning more about Sebastian and seeing if anything develops between him and Stevie. I hope that the next book is able to fill in or avoid some of the previous books issues cause I am still intrigued.

This book had the potential to be an awesome read, especially since the protagonist, Lux, a crime writer is seeking vengeance against those who wronged her, and teams up with a vigilante group. However, it ultimately fell short in terms of an intriguing plot that kept me engaged and a lack of chemistry between the main characters, Lux and River. Additionally, I felt that plot holes were missing, and we abruptly jumped between different periods of time. For instance, one chapter ends with Lux at a bar, and the next, she’s found in the basement by River. I yearned for more insights from Lux’s perspective. Everything felt superficial, and I wished we had delved deeper into the story. Despite its lackluster plot, I finished it in a few hours. Thank you, Luna Literary, for providing me with the ARC!

Lux and River have their share of heartache and trauma before this story begins, but the turns they experience as the story unfolds is devistating. Huxley starts this syory off with a bang; diving right into the crux of the story and severe trauma that drive both characters. Huxley draws the reader into the inner working, emotions, and healing journey for both characters. I could not put this book down and devoured it with a voracious need to know what happened next; to see how Lux & River develop their relationship. I wanted to like this, but it was just not working for me. The writing was good and I liked the premise - but it was lacking in the darkness that SHOULD have been there given the plot.

But maybe someone would actually appreciate that?

It skipped over all of the trauma, and then I’m sorry but when we catch the bad guys - I need there to be some torture..

I loved every bit of this novel. I immediately signed up when I read that it had “Dexter vibes” and it did not disappoint. It reminded me a lot of a certain season of Dexter but this story gave me the giddiness of a love story that a serial unaliver deserved. Yes I know; being happy for “that type” probably isn’t the best, but he’s only going after people that deserve it. And he has the resources to do so considering he’s a tech billionaire. So why not use it to do some good. For justice. For revenge. River is the true definition of a hero and a villain. And I’m here for it. Lux is a badass that refused to let someone take her voice away. To ruin her life. She just needed to find someone to bring out the darkness in her. Who better to show her than River. The growth between the two of them was heartwarming and emotional. I adored them. The side characters—Sebastian, Stevie, and even Hayden, I loved them. I hope that we get more of these characters in the future. Definitely recommend if you want an intriguing, revenge, slow burn, “touch her and ☠️” story.

These two were so broken in their own ways but found solace and healing in each other and it was so beautiful. The way he loves her and wants nothing but to protect her and get revenge with her was honestly iconic.

I absolutely devoured this! I loved the story and themes in this book. Lux went through a little bit of a bad time and she is still a really strong woman. River is very intrigued by her and can't help but really protective of her. When they actually meet, it's sparks all around and it just gets hotter. I got Dexter vibes and I am here for it! I love the banter between them and I love how she wants to be a part of River's nighttime "work". The ending was so good and I can already tell there will be 1 or 2 more in this series!

Book overview:

River is a billionaire tech CEO by day and a killer by night. With a team comprised of his cousin, FBI contact, and cleanup crew he hunts the nastiest groups of people and makes sure they can't hurt anyone else. It might seem like he's doing the world a favor but in reality these kills slake a thirst for blood that River struggles to control. He is calculating, dominating, and used to being in control. When Lux stumbles into his world, everything tips and he must find a new balance to his life.

Lux is a fiction crime writer who draws upon real-world cases to build her stories. When she becomes the victim of a twisted group of men, she digs into a darkness she didn't know she had. Teaming up with River and his team, she sets out to extract revenge on the men who turned her world inside out.

Tropes:
Touch her and die
Revenge

Thoughts:
I found this to be a simple read and got through it quickly. I think things could be fleshed out more; the characters, romance and plot are kind of hard to find believable. River is hunting a group and tries to get enmeshed in their schemes; he's supposed to be calculating and controlled but instead of actually getting into the group and getting more information he just kills them all off in quick sequence. There's very little actual build-up or tension of him investigating or trying to infiltrate the group beyond a fast kill. When he sees Lux in the club he falls instantly but doesn't recognize her right away upon seeing her again. We don't get to see a lot of the CEO vs killer - a lot of this is focused on him as a killer so the whole idea of clashing personalities feels underdeveloped.

Lux is a crime writer, seems to be a homebody, doesn't appear to have any friends or hobbies, and is ridiculously accepting of everything that happens to her. We see her go from the club to suddenly being a victim of this group of men who abduct, rape and torture women. After being abducted and raped her solution is to beg the strangers who break in and kill everyone to take her home so her dad doesn't see her in that condition. I don't know about you but I find it hard to wrap my mind around the idea that she would be willing to just give out her personal address and trust that these strange men are not going to do further damage. She then finds out she is being stalked and is just like.. yeah this is fine. They kill people? Awesome, I want in on that! The fact that she is so into killing with them feels like it would be out of character - we don't see remorse, moral struggles, or concern about her POLICE father. She tells her sister and her sister is just like.. YUP THIS IS FINE. It's just a bizarre jump for me that doesn't really make sense given that her dad is shown to have really struggled mentally and emotionally with his cases, had his daughters in self-defense classes, and is active and present in their lives.

A lot of things feel like they're there just to have something be there. River is a billionaire tech bro because we need to see his fancy gadgets and resources. Lux being a fiction crime writer doesn't really seem to have much impact at all - it's used as a ploy to get information from her dad but she doesn't actually utilize that enough for it to matter. River suddenly needing to hunt and disappearing is just to move the plot forward - we don't see this struggle anywhere else in the book.

The idea is there but I just feel the execution was flat so it's a 2.5 for me.

An entry point into the world of dark romance, offering a story that flirts with the genre's themes without crossing into distressing or extreme territory. The plot centers on Lux, a crime novelist who finds herself targeted and subsequently rescued by River, a protective and deeply obsessive man who embraces a dual identity as a billionaire by day and a ruthless predator by night. For readers who are curious about the "stalker romance" or "touch her and die" tropes but prefer to avoid the potentially more severe psychological distress often found in the genre, this provides a safer, lighter alternative. It balances the darker elements with open-door intimacy that satisfies the desire for spice without feeling overly graphic or extreme.

While the premise of a protective stalker guiding a traumatized author through a revenge arc is compelling, the execution falls slightly short when it comes to the central relationship. Both Lux and River have high-level, fascinating concepts behind them-a crime novelist drawing inspiration from real cases and a dangerous vigilante-yet their emotional connection does not feel as robustly developed as the narrative suggests. The transition into their intense dynamic relies heavily on instant lust, which leaves the bond feeling a superficial. A deeper exploration of their mutual vulnerability and more shared, substantive moments would have made their eventual union feel fully earned rather than just a byproduct of the plot's forced proximity.

Overall it left me wishing for greater character depth. The individual motivations and internal worlds of both leads are introduced with great potential, but they often feel flat. River’s patient, supportive nature during Lux’s healing process provides a grounded touch to an otherwise heightened reality, but his internal complexities could have been explored much further to elevate him past standard archetype boundaries. Similarly, Lux's journey through PTSD and vengeance moves at a steady pace, but a more thorough dive into her psyche would have provided the emotional resonance needed to elevate the story's high-stakes momentum.

🍵 Final Verdict
A solid, quick read that functions perfectly as a "dark romance light" introduction for beginners who want the thrill of an obsessive hero and open-door spice without the heavy, explicit triggers. However, seasoned romance readers looking for complex character development and a deeply felt emotional connection between the leads may find themselves wanting more substance.
