Jeffrey Archer's play, The Accused , is a tense courtroom drama with a difference. The audience will act as the jury, as if they were in the Central Criminal Court at the Old Bailey. You will have to decide. . . Did Dr Sherwood murder his wife? Was Jennifer Mitchell his mistress? Which of his alibis should you believe.

The choice will keep you on the edge of your seats, and at the end of the trial you will be invited to deliver your verdict of guilty or not guilty. Once you have made that decision the play will continue - with one of two different endings, depending on your verdict. Only then will you finally discover the truth.

The Accused premiered at the Theatre Royal, Windsor, in September 2000.

Lord Jeffery Archer has long been called a master storyteller, no matter what he chooses to write. While I have devoured many of his novels and short stories, this was the first of his stage plays that I have read, which ended up being quite entertaining. Dr. Patrick Sherwood stands accused of killing his wife, Elizabeth. There is much evidence that is presented by the prosecution, including an alleged affair with one of his nurses. However, while the evidence seems strong, the defence is not prepared to let it stand without being refuted. Dr. Sherwood is a respected cardio surgeon and has access to many medications, including the one that may have caused his wife’s death. Additionally, one cannot discount that the potassium chloride might have come from a household item. As both sides present their evidence, the jury must wait to deliver a verdict. By Act Three, it’s time for a verdict to be rendered, which offers the audience a chance to participate in the proceedings. Based on their vote, a verdict is delivered and the fallout ensues. A wonderful play that will keep the reader (or, one could suppose, the audience member) enthralled to the very end. Guilty or Innocent, YOU decide!

Archer is a master with words and is able to pull the reader in from the early stages. While the story is best told as a stage play, even reading this script does not dampen the action and the well-developed story that comes to pass over three acts. Archer uses not only some key asides to open each day of the trial, as seen between the legal minds, but also a wonderful to and fro in the direct testimony and cross-examination. Archer develops his characters through their delivery of evidence and the narrative embedded in their descriptive words. The play is wonderfully entertaining and the format forces the reader/audience member to pay close attention so that they might choose the fate of Dr. Sherwood in the latter stages. It reminds me of a play m y father wrote and had published years ago, though his had more of a humorous mockery of a certain fairy tale. Still, the ‘two-pronged ending’ leaves the audience entertained, no matter what happens and permits an interesting alternate ending, dependent only on the gut feeling of those watching. I’ll have to find more of Archer’s stage work and enjoy it soon.

Kudos, Lord Archer, for such a great play. Yet another form of writing at which you excel!

تا حالا هیئت منصفه‌ی یه دادگاه بودین؟
تو این نمایشنامه(که چقدر دوست داشتم میتونستم اجراش رو ببینم) ماعه مخاطب چشم باز میکنیم و خودمون رو روی صندلیِ جایگاهِ هیئت منصفه می‌بینیم و باید تشخیص بدیم که متهم، یعنی پزشکِ متخصص و رئیسِ بخش قلب بیمارستان سنت جورج، گناهکاره یا بی‌گناه. پایانِ داستان کاملن به نظر و اجماعِ ما بستگی داره.
حالا اتهامِ این پزشکِ متخصص چیه؟ قتل. قتلِ کی؟ همسرش.
این وسط پای یه معشوقه هم به داستان باز میشه.
به لحاظ ایده‌ی داستانی نمیشه گفت خیلییی چیز متفاوت و پیچیده‌ایه ولی هر چی که هست تو رو تا انتها با خودش میکِشونه.
و البته سوالی که پیش میاد اینه که چرا نویسنده باید ما رو وارد این بازی کنه؟ چرا مایی که هیچ سررشته‌ای از قضاوت کردن نداریم باید قضاوت کنیم؟ آیا میتونیم آدم‌های عادل و منطقی‌ای باشیم؟ میتونیم بی‌طرفانه حکم صادر کنیم یا از همون ابتدای داستان به یک طرف میل نشون میدیم؟ در یک کلام، آیا ما، این شهروندانِ ساده‌ی بدون ابیلیتیِ بازیِ مافیا میتونیم از پسِ کار بر بیایم؟
آخ که سخت‌ترین کار رو به ما سپردی آقای آرچر!

اگه این نمایشنامه رو دوست داشتین پیشنهاد یه سریال رو میدم که تازه هم در اومده. روی هم رفته هشت قسمته و دو سه قسمتِ انتهایی که تمامن در دادگاه میگذره فوق‌العادست!
در این سریال هم ماجرا، ماجرای قتله و ردپای یه معشوقه. و البته مثل نمایشنامه‌ی متهم، یه خصومتِ قبلی و شخصی هم بینِ دادستان و وکیل‌مدافعِ متهم وجود داره که جذابیت رو بیشتر میکنه.

زندگی خود جفری آرچر پر از رسوایی‌ها و دادگاه‌های زیادی بوده(با توجه به مقدمه مترجم) به همین دلیل به نظرم نمایش دادگاه خیلی خوب از آب دراومده.
مردی که به قتل همسرش متهم شده، وکیل مدافعی که در تلاش برای اثبات بیگناهی و دادستانی که سعی در اثبات گناهکاری دارد
خواننده به عنوان هیئت منصفه دادگاه حاضر شده و در هر پرده با توجه به سوالات دادستان و وکیل مدافع ممکنه نظرش درباره‌ی متهم عوض شه در رابطه با سوالات فک کنه و سرنخ‌هارو به هم وصل کنه
پایانش هم نه چندان غافلگیر کننده ولی راضی کننده هستش

عجب انتخاب درستی داشتید جناب آرچر!
ما، در تمام زندگی، هم تماشاچی هستیم و هم هیئت منصفه... تماشا می‌کنیم و قضاوت می‌کنیم.
نمی‌دانیم حق با کیست! نمی‌دانیم کدام دروغ را باور کنیم و کدام دروغ را نپذیریم!
اما قضاوت‌کردن را خوب بلدیم.
درست و اشتباه؛ غالبا اشتباه!
در هر موضوعی و در هر مسئله‌ی کوچک و بزرگی که بتوانیم!
قضاوت را به ما بسپارید.

جناب آرچر،
من، به عنوان یکی از تماشاچیان، یا یک عضو از میان هیئت منصفه‌ی دادگاه شما، تعهد می‌دهم که اشتباه قضاوت کنیم...

Από τα πιο ενδιαφέροντα αστυνομικά-δικαστικα θεατρικά έργα ενός συγγραφέα που επενδύει στην αγωνία, και, σχεδόν, πάντα εντυπωσιάζει.

Οι αναγνώστες έχουν το ρόλο των ενόρκων, αφού τους δίνεται η ευκαιρία να διαλέξουν μεταξύ 2 αποφάσεων - ένα πρωτότυπο στοιχείο που εξιτάρει τον αναγνώστη και τον τοποθετεί στον 'πυρήνα' των γεγονότων.

Μοναδικό!

مثل این فیلمایی بود که اتفاقات تو دادگاه رو نشون میدن.
خیلی جذاب بود

همسر یه پزشک به قتل رسیده و حالا اون متهم ردیف اول شناخته شده و تو این دادگاه ما باید گناهکار یا بی‌گناه بودن ایشون رو اعلام کنیم.
و همین باعث میشه آدم یکم استرس بگیره :)))
من خییییلی با پایان این نمایشنامه حال نکردم و یه جورایی قابل پیش‌بینی بود و انتظارم از پایانش بیشتر بود. ولی درکل تجربه خوبی بود و خیلی سرگرم شدم :)))

بک کتاب کوچک خوشخوان و جذب کننده ، که به خاطر ژانر جنایی که دارد ، و فهمیدن ماجرا دوست نداری رهایش کنی و یک نفس در یک نصفه روز می‌خوانی تا تمام شود .
جالبی نمایشنامه به پایان بندی دو گانه اش بود ، که برای خواننده و اجرا کننده ی نمایش ، حق انتخاب قائل شده بود که آن را با هر پایانی که بیشتر میپسندی تمام کنی .
و شگفت انگیزترین اینجا که تماشاچی و شنونده را به عنوان نقش هیئت منصفه در نظر گرفته بود و این تو بودی که باید رای به گناهکار بودن یا بی گناهی ، متهم میدادی .

جناب آرچر تقریبا هیچ کار تازه و ویژه‌ای انجام نداده. یعنی عملا هیچ خلاقیتی نداره. همه چیز تکراریه. از ایده‌ی داستان تا شخصیتا و گاها پیچش‌های داستان، و حتی این شکل پایان بندی که انتخاب با مخاطبه و پایان های متفاوت وجود داره. حتی در حرف و موضوع کلی اثر که مسئله قضاوت رو مطرح می‌کنه، اینکه چقدر قضاوت ما می‌تواند درست باشد و این چیزا، اینا هم جدید نیست ولی نمی‌دونم چرا انقدددددر جذابه همه چیز...
توی متن مخاطب (تماشاچی) از همون خط اول به طور مستقیم خطاب میشه و بهش گفته میشه که قراره در جایگاه هیئت منصفه دادگاه قرار بگیره. این نقش دادن به تماشاچی باعث درگیر شدن مخاطب با اثر میشه، وقتی وظیفه‌ای به تماشاچی داده میشه اون هم خودش رو ملزم می‌دونه که ۶ دنگ حواسشو به کار بده. این شاید تنها اتفاق خلاقانه در این اثره که ویژه‌اش می‌کنه.
در مجموع جزو نمایشنامه‌های خوبیه که در یک سال اخیر منتشر شده و صد البته ته به سبب داشتن پایان‌بندی متفاوت دیدن اجرای این متن لذت صد چندانی خواهد بود، اما باز هم خوندنش خالی از لطف نیست.

3.5/5 I am a fan of Jeffrey Archer and noticed that he had written a few standalone plays as well. I grabbed hold of this one and it was a decent read - courtroom drama, novella length and satisfying ending(s). Have loved courtroom and parliament scenes in Archer's novels earlier.
Eager to get my hands on the other 4 plays.
PS:- Read all of Christie's plays one after the other a few yrs ago.

نمایشنامه‌های دادگاهی ژانر موردعلاقه‌ی منه. ولی وقتی موضوع پرونده و محاکمه یک چیز شخصیه و به مسائل اجتماعی تعمیم پیدا نمی‌کنه، ذهن خواننده اون‌قدرها هم درگیر نمی‌شه. به یک بار خوندنش می‌ارزه

آرچر با حفظ ابهام، حقیقت داستان رو تا پایان افشا نمیکنه و از خواننده می‌خواد که درمورد بی گناهی یا گناهکار بودن شخصیت اصلی تصمیم بگیره.
تنش های عاطفی بین شخصیت ها به خوبی منتقل میشه و شما رو درگیر ماجرای پیچیده ای میکنه و به فکر وا میداره.

'The Accused' is a play authored by Archer, and in that, I believe it is a disservice to read it. Even so, considering I am highly unlikely to encounter it being performed in my lifetime, I purchased the somewhat overpriced Kindle edition, coming off a highly enjoyable 'Tell Tale' from the same author. The premise of a play that allowed the audience to decide the fate of the protagonist as a jury, also seemed interesting enough to read at least once. The book/ play ends with two potential endings depending on whether the audience/ jury finds him guilty or innocent.

I happened to find a couple of narrative plot holes which bugged me a lot. Archer excels in the interplay of strongly etched characters and the play format where the narrative is carried forward more by dialogue and less by, well, narrative, isn't something Archer is best suited for.

Even so, I didn't mind the faults of the book much. 'The Accused' is enjoyable enough, though it stops short of being an Archer masterpiece.
