What happens when a two-thousand-year-old language rooted in a classical poetics of land moves, along with some of its peoples, through colonial and postcolonial upheaval, war, and forced or voluntary migrations?
Questioning traditional concepts of time, place, labour, love, purity and gender, this prismatic collection of poems, translations, and transcreations draws connections between ancient Sangam landscapes and North America's Indigenous lands, and between classical Tamil love poems and Southeast Asian migrant labour songs--tending, with care, the wounded memories of fisher-people, plantation workers, and undocumented refugees.
This project gathering translators from Tamil speaking communities throughout the diaspora is grounded in respect for its origin on Turtle Island, explores personal and emotional connections with this 2000 year old language through classical poetry, folk and work songs, and contemporary poets. Translations, recreations, and reflections combine to make this a very dynamic and moving volume, the second in trace press' Translating series. Highly recommended. Tamil terrains is a wonderfully thoughtful and compassionately curated collection of poetry translated by two authors who urge the reader to think through land and language through a decolonial lens.
This would be my first time tapping into Tamil poetry, that too poetry reflecting on Tamil diaspora. It was a wonderful feeling reading in Tamil in some parts, even if I didn’t know some of the words. It’s such a beautiful language and gave me a newfound appreciation and love for my mother-tongue.
There was a specific poem with graphicological deviations and visual motifs. There are so many things you can get from text written this way and not just from the words you see but also the white spaces between. I loved this interpretation of the text and the thoughtfulness of the authors when translating this particular poem. I would include it but I don’t think I can format it the same way the authors did. 🫤
A collection of Tamil poems, translations, transcreations and reflections. Reading this I was introduced to Tamil poets, our tradition of poetry and our relationship to land whether back home or as settlers. I really enjoyed the experience of reading this, I learned so much and want more!
