Fae by the Bay #1

Bargains with Benefits

Rate this book
When Luna bargained with an arrogant fae journalist to save her inn, the last thing she expected was to fall for him.

Half-fae Luna Pierce is getting what she’s always wanted: to run the Cliff House Inn. Except, it hasn’t had a visitor in months, one of the rooms is magically locked, and the owner, her estranged fae father, is threatening to sell. She has until Long Night, when fae from across the continent travel to the city of Sandrin, to change his mind.

Writing a recommendation column for the Bayside Times isn’t exactly what Vincent Andiveron pictured doing with his life. His pieces, telling the fae of Sandrin where to see and be seen, are fun but frivolous. Now, the best tip of his career, an investigation that could set him on a path to serious journalism, fell into his lap–and he just met the perfect source.

When the handsome fae Luna accidentally throws a drink at ends up being the city's taste-maker, she must decide if she can shelve her family baggage and make a bargain that could benefit them both. But this is no simple transaction. Vincent needs to turn the wild and warm Luna into a proprietor pleasing to the stodgy old fae. And Luna hasn’t been to her father’s house—well-–ever, so getting Vincent access for his article might be tricky.

Their mutual attraction muddies the waters of their ambitions. What’s worse, all this time together might make Luna realize Vincent is not as snobby as he seemed, and Vincent might realize he doesn’t want to change a thing about Luna—she’s enchanting just the way she is.

Bargains with Benefits is a cozy standalone romantasy with spice in the Fae by the Bay series. Every book in this interconnected series ends with a HEA. If you like fae bargains, opposites attract, and half-fae heroines finding their place to belong, you’ll love this sweet and spicy story.

The Fae by the Bay series is set in the same world as Compass Points . Enjoy new characters in this favorite fantasy world, or dive in for the first time.

Loved this cozy fantasy with spice !!! Getting to watch the relationship grow and bloom between Luna and Vincent was heartwarming, sweet and hot !!! I loved how magic was used to show his affection for her. Seeing his wind “play” with her and be cutesy with Luna was just adorable. The community, found family aspect of the story also had strong resonance with me. Family dynamics and friendships being built are things I love being explored in a story. This book was such a great read with so much depth and I love that there are other books related to keep reading about the community !!!

Favorite Quote: "Another bargain, Miss Pierce. Didn't we learn our lesson the first time?" " I'm not sure what lesson you've learned, but our first bargain has only left me wanting more."

I absolutely loved this cozy romantasy! The characters were lovable, and I really enjoyed watching their development and romance unfold. The inn, tavern, and town created such a warm, cozy atmosphere it felt like a place I’d love to visit. This book was a charming read with just a touch of spice, and it was a quick, easy story that I truly enjoyed. If you love cozy fantasy, this one’s for you! Huge thanks to the author for the gifted ARC.

Okay, I was absolutely hooked on this book once I started reading. It was a cute, cozy read with Regency vibes, mystery, and a whole lot of magic.

It starts with Luna Pierce, a half-fae being offered the chance to run the Cliff House Inn by her estranged fae father, provided she can fill the inn to its full capacity by Long Night. This task seems more difficult than it looks because the inn hasn't been able to bring in any guests for as long as she can remember.

This has been the opportunity she's been longing for for years, which is why when she comes across Vincent Andiveron, who writes a recommendation column for the Bayside Times, one that's widely popular, she reaches out to him in hopes of getting him to feature the inn as his next recommendation.

While the recommendation column is a hit among the people of Sandrin, that's not what Vincent wishes to do long term, and it so happens that his boss might have a tip for him to investigate that would help him gain more credibility to step into more serious journalism. He happens to find that Luna might be the source who can help him with his investigation.

The two strike a mutually beneficial bargain, with Luna getting the word out about her inn in the Bayside Times and Vincent getting Luna's help in determining the legitimacy of the tip.

Luna was someone I really admired because of how she was unapologetically herself. Even being a half-fae and having a strained relationship with her father, she prided herself on never changing who she was to fit a mold. Which is why it irked her when Vincent initially tried to get her to change her appearance to appeal to the old fae in order to gain popularity for her inn.

Vincent was such a cinnamon roll MMC whom I absolutely adored. Given how his family had forced their decisions on him and tried to influence his magic growing up, he wanted to distance himself from them, and now he was trying to figure out who he was and form his own beliefs. After only being approached by people who wanted to benefit from his family name or gain a favor through his popular column, Vincent found it easy to make assumptions about Luna when she too asked him for a favor to feature her inn.

The romance between Vincent and Luna progressed at a good pace. There was attraction, a spark right from their first meeting, even if things had gone really sideways. They both had misconceptions about each other due to their own bad experiences, which they initially projected on each other. But as they spent time together helping each other out with their respective bargains, their views shifted, and they started to see more than the initial image they'd formed. What I also loved is that even though they took time to get to know each other, Vincent's magic was clear about what it wanted and acted accordingly. There was an understanding between Luna and his magic even when they didn't know each other too well, which was honestly so adorable.

Vincent comes from an old family of fae but didn't agree entirely with their practices, and Luna is a half-fae, due to which she isn't accepted by everyone in society. They came from two completely different worlds but were similar in the sense that they were both still trying to find their place in society.

There was spice, yes, but it was minimal yet hot at the same time. It didn't take away from the plot or from their relationship, though, which I liked.

The friends group in this book was something I loved. Evelyn, Seraphina, and Luna were a tight-knit group, and I love how they accepted Luna for exactly who she was and supported her every step of the way in her new venture to unravel the mystery within Cliff House Inn.

I'm also very invested in the next book because THAT ending has left me with a lot of questions, and I need to know if the next couple is who I think it's going to be... or not.

Thank you to Jillian Witt for providing me with the ARC in exchange for an honest review.

Ok this was so stinkin cute!!!! Bargains with Benefits is a cozy fantasy with low stakes, an engaging plot and characters that you just can’t help but root for.

We follow Vincent and Luna as they both find themselves in situations and strike a bargain to help each other out. I really loved both of the main characters, they were both so sweet. They were hesitant to trust each other at first since they were technically just using each other for their bargain but quickly realized that there was much more to their relationship.

I thought the plot was paced well I loved the twist at the end. Highly recommend!

Thank you to the author and NetGalley for the arc!

Jillian Witt never ceases to amaze me with her ability to write lower to medium high stakes fantasy that is so beautifully written, filled with unforgettable characters, intriguing plots, and heaps of swoon-worthy moments. My love for her work was born with her Compass Points series and has never stopped growing and blossoming.

You can only imagine my excitement when I realised we were returning to the world of Compass Points, this time with new characters and a new story. So, here we are. This time, we meet Luna Pierce, a half-fae with a heart of gold, determination, and love, and Vincent, a full-bloodied fae with Old Fae heritage. Seems like an unlikely match? Well, you will just have to wait and see; there is always more than meets the eye.

I always say there is one thing Jillian excels at: showing what healthy communication in a relationship can do. She has proven that with Rose & Luc in Compass Points, and now with Luna & Vincent. And even more, she has dug deep into complicated family dynamics, long-buried secrets, and the prejudices of higher classes. Vincent and Luna are both more than their heritage; they are their own individuals, set on learning who they are and deciding who they want to be.

Luna and Vincent finding their own path and constructing their own future is the book's highlight. Choosing their family, their friends. Accepting and giving love and devotion. Vincent might still be trying to realise if his wind is his ally or his competition when it comes to Luna, but the road ahead is filled with family, friends, love, and the freedom of carving your own destiny.

If you enjoy reading about fae bargains, opposites attract, half-fae heroines finding their place to belong and feel at home, you will fall in love with Jillian's Bargains with Benefits. The best thing? This is only Book 1 in the Fae by the Bay series of interconnected standalones with a HEA. I can't wait to follow Jillian's on this journey again.

arc read

Bargains with Benefits by Jillian Witt is Book 1 in the Fae by the Bay series—cozy fantasy romances with a regency feel that will assumedly follow different couples each time.

🤝cozy romantasy
🤝interconnected series
🤝fae bargains
🤝opposites attract
🤝family drama
🤝his magic is obsessed with her (his-magic-falls-first?)

Set in the same world as Witt’s other series, Compass Points (but this can be read without having read CP), Bargains with Benefits follows half-fae-half-human FMC Luna and popular journalist MMC Vincent, who hails from a long line of an old fae family. When the opportunity arises where Luna and Vincent each have something the other wants—Luna an exclusive article on the inn she’s trying to save and Vincent inside access to investigate a tip on Luna’s estranged father Darius—a bargain is struck, and terms are set. But falling for each other wasn’t part of the plan.

This was such a charming read. It’s first and foremost a fantasy romance, but it’s overall relatively low-stakes and seriously cozy. It even had sort of a regency feel, like you can’t help but picture them talking like in Bridgerton; it worked here! There’s also little sprinkles of My Fair Lady at the beginning, before Vincent realizes there’s no reason to change Luna at all to fit into old fae society, she’s already perfect.

A lot of things worked, actually. For example, having Vincent’s wind magic act as almost a third character and conveyor of Vincent’s subconscious feelings. I love that he’s estranged from his family because, among other things, his magic has too much personality, haha.

The plot with Darius, Luna’s father, was engaging and felt like a true story arc. I won’t spoil anything, but it’s definitely not as simple as it appears on the outset. And I ended this book massively attracted to him. Even though the next book is probably going to be about Luna’s friend and her work rival, I’m rooting for a Darius real love story! Take that how you will. (Is literally anyone with me on this???)

If you’re looking for a low-stakes, cozy, and sweet and spicy urban fantasy romance with an intriguing mix tropes and influences, I’d recommend giving this one a try!

I loved the slow burn romance of this. What starts as just a bargain to help Luna gain customers for her inn, and for Vincent to find information on her mysterious father for his article, shifts into a sweet romance and growing connection.
I enjoyed the sentient wind powers and how it pushed them together, and learning about Luna's hidden powers.
This had a sprinkling of spice, family tension and drama, and unlocking hidden secrets.

This follows Luna who has just found out her father (whom shes basically been in no contact with like her whole life because he's rejected her since she has no magic) wants to sell the inn. The inn she works and LIVES to make matters worse a man enters the pub she also works at and says something which reheats her anger. it was a harmless thing really, but somehow she's thrown the drink he ordered at her. Now he's intrigued by her and she by him, but things get messy when she realizes he's the one that writes her favorite recommendations. those very recommendations that can help her save the inn so they strike a bargain. he helps her with a recommendation but only if she helps him get access to her father for an upcoming major piece.

What to Expect:

📖Same World as Compass Points
📖Magic
📖Sprinkling of Spice
📖Instant Attraction
📖His Wind Magic is Obsessed with Her
📖Opposites Attract

Why it wasn't an entirely good fit for me:

📖A lot of the "romance" seemed to take place in their thoughts so my brain really had a hard time believing they had a true connection with each other until closer to the end. My brain try as it might to accept what I was reading as fact felt it was forced and it just wasn't believable to me. Sometimes it works for me, sometimes it doesn't. Unfortunately, in this case it didn't.

📖 The "big" reveal of WHY the inn was not succussful considering it had been in the past. with the who/what/when/where of it all I didn't feel a full resolution as to why. especially given the feelings of the fmc toward this particular person I was confused of the reality of it.

📖 The wind aspect in the spicy scenes. I know some people loved this but it was...weird for me. The entirity of the book the winds "personility" equated to more of a child for me. Especially given it's eagerness and excitement....and well the backstory of it.

📖The Bargains. "Fae" bargains. Now I'm not entirely certain of how magic truly works in Compass Points since I have only read this, but the word Fae was so misleading. These bargains can be broken and it seems without much negative fireback. The mmc often wanted to end the bargain but still do her piece.

Just because I didn't love the story like I thought I would does not mean its bad. It's just simply not meant for me and that's okay. Sometimes I can vibe, sometimes I over think throughout the whole story and can't connect. It happens.

Will it be the last time I try this authors books? No. The ending showed me I do enjoy aspects of their writing, and that this book just wasnt for me. I am also curious if I read Compass points if that would change anything for me. Would it make me like this story better or would it show me that maybe this universe just isn't my jam.

Thank you to netgalley for the earc and the oppurtunity to read this book early.

My brain is being fried by studying, and cozy fantasy is all I want to read! Thank you Jillian for my ARC of your newest release. This was so adorable; the perfect light cozy fantasy. Luna is desperate to save her family’s inn, and she strikes a bargain with a popular fae journalist that is known for helping businesses that are struggling by running features on them in the paper. Vincent however, also has an agenda of his own. He needs to find evidence from her fathers study for an article his boss wants him to write that could take his career up a notch. As they work together, sparks fly and magic (literally) comes to life. I adored all of the side characters in this, and also just the feel of the world, the magic, and all the elements. It was so cute. It even had a slash of spice! I did not know she has another series set in this world so I will be picking those up! Thank you again for the read!

This was such a cute read ! I really enjoyed going back to the world of the Compass Points, but this time, with normal citizens, not the powerful leaders. The chapters length is perfect, and switching POVs really brought a nice perspective to the story. A journalist and an inn keeper ? Nice combo honestly. The FMC was adorable, and it was nice to see her grow into her power. The MMC was such a cutie, and we love a supportive fae. I absolutely recommend it if you're looking for a cozy standalone fantasy read !

What a fun cozy romantasy!

From the first page, Luna and Vincent’s story had me whisked away into their world. Low-stakes and easy drama, this book has me obsessed. It takes place in the same world as the author’s first series, Compass Points, but is separate as I have not read that series yet and was not lost! I will definitely be picking up Compass Points soon while I wait for book two in this series!!!

I cannot WAIT to see where book two goes, based on the hints at the end of this book!

What a fun, sweet, cozy fae romantasy with low stakes, fae bargains, half-fae heroines, flirtatious magic, and some angst and heat.

Meet Luna Pierce our half-fae FMC trying to find her place and has a heart of gold. Meet Vincent our full-bloodied fae with Old Fae heritage trying to become a valued reporter. Luna & Vincent’s story was sweet. I loved the way Vincent's wind magic flirted with Luna. It was too cute.

I really enjoyed Luna navigating the complex relationship with her father. She was raised by her human mother who made her believe that her fae father wanted nothing to do with her. It was endearing to read how she untangles these lies and reconnects with her father who supports her unconditionally.

I haven’t read Jillian Witt's Compass Points series yet, but this series is set the same world but with new characters. And every book in the series ends with a HEA.

If you're looking for a light-hearted, feel-good romance story, this is an excellent read.

I've been deep in my Cozy Fantasy Era, and this book was exactly what I needed. It was adorable and charming. What initially sold me was the comparisons to Gilmore Girls, and it absolutely delivered on that front. The cozy inn, the slow-burn romance, and the heartfelt relationships gave me all the warm, comforting vibes I was hoping for. The addition of fae and magic was a bonus :)

At a time when I’m craving escapism more than ever, this story offered a soft place to land. And as someone with a complicated relationship with their father, a lot of the emotional beats hit surprisingly hard. Sure, the writing was a little clumsy in places, and some plot twists were wildly convenient or felt unrealistic, but that’s not why you pick up a book like this.

3.75-4 ⭐️ contemporary romance meets fantasy. A nice, light, easy read that is perfect for beginners in the romance/fantasy genre. At first I thought it was going to be more YA, but the last few chapters changed that. But it’s not one of those books that goes into chapter long sex scenes where even you are ready for it to end. I’d recommend this for anyone starting out in the gang of romantasy

I absolutely loved this book. The world and magic system was so intriguing and cozy. I was instantly drawn to both our MMC, Vincent, and our FMC, Luna. I think Vincent’s wind was my FAVORITE part of this book. Just like Luna says… his wind is Intoxicating. It’s seductive. Never would I have thought I’d be using those words to describe wind but here we are and I’m here for it. The slow burn was perfection. It was so fun to watch Luna & Vincents relationship develop and form. Both of our main characters had a lot of individual growth and change happen in this book and it was beautiful to watch in both of them. I cannot wait to read more by Jillian Witt and to return to this world.

Thank you to Victory Editing NetGalley Co-op for this ARC

So I wanted to like this book, but it had a few problems.
Pros:
The world building was great I wanted to know more about the different fae, and would probably read about other characters in this world.
The MFC Luna knew who she was and didn’t change for anyone, she was confident in herself. She had 2 close friends that were family to them, I wished we got more of them, but you could tell they would do anything for each other
The MMC also stayed true to himself, and his feeling for Luna were sweet
I also enjoyed the story about her dad and grandma

Cons: this book needed better editing. They must have mentioned the first meeting 30 times….why. Also the first meeting was terrible. Not sure why they were both so taken by it. She throws a drink in his face…WTF
They also mention the “bargain” 30 times, but it seems there’s no consequence if the break the bargain, it never really specified. I kept wondering why they would wait so long to write the article about her inn to help fill it till the last second. I feel like the MMC and FMC didn’t say what they were thinking or feeling out loud, everything was inner monologue, so their relationship lacked for me. But it’s had to read a book that repeats the same thing, words, phrases, stories over and over.

Bargains with Benefits was so stinkin’ cute and cozy! It was the perfect balance of sweet, swoony, and spicy! The MCs had such cute flirty banter that had me grinning and blushing! The MMC’s sentient wind powers were like their own sassy character and I loved it. Vincent’s bashfulness over when his wind would flirt with Luna because his control slipped was SO adorable. He was soooo smitten with her! I loved that Luna was a bit quirky and unapologetically herself and that Vincent loved her for her quirks rather than despite them. They were so cute together! 🥰

They had a bit of insta-interest (I wouldn’t necessarily call it insta-love or insta-lust though), but it still felt like a slow-burn because they had a misunderstanding that caused them to doubt each other’s intentions. They started falling for eachother as they came to get to know each other for their true selves, but fought their feelings as a result of their bargain. It was so sweet to see them fall for each other. Vincent was an absolute goner for Luna haha. He never stood a chance at resisting her charm. 😂

There were also complicated family dynamics that added a bit of depth to this story as Luna navigates getting to know her estranged father, learns some hard truths, and processes that she cannot get certain answers from her deceased mother. Vincent also has to navigate his moral differences from his elitist parents and tries to forge his own path outside of his prominent family’s influence. It’s a story about knowing who you are, navigating complex relationships, and finding love and belonging.

It is set in the same world as her Compass Points series, which I have not read but not definitely want to! The world-building was interesting, fairly well-developed (especially for a standalone), and was smoothly incorporated. I am looking forward to more books in this series of interconnected standalones! Am I getting hints at an Academic Rivals to Lovers romance between Evelyn and Ambrose next?! Because I sure hope so! 😍🤞I loved the little glimpse we got into their dynamics as they worked together to help solve the mystery in this one!

I absolutely recommend this book if you like Cozy Romantasy. It was kind of along the lines of Tessonja Odette’s Fae Flings & Corset String series, if you’ve read those!

Oh Jillian….
You must forgive me for being slightly oblivious, and not realizing that this book was interconnected with Compass Points.

That being said, I absolutely loved Compass Points and now I love this book too 😂
The squeal I let loose on the first page when I realized it was within the same universe was pretty damn loud! 😅

I know everybody’s talking about how cozy this book is but this feels a lot more nuanced than that to me.
I find a quiet strength in this book, both MCs are living their lives as best they can, with what they have, who they are and what they can do without making a fuss.

They may not be struggling, starving, or in a world crumbling with war, but instead they are trapped in a social, economical and species caste system.

The same type of systems we see all over the world right now. And though both characters come from different sides, they have no idea how deep the other side feels these prejudices until they come together, both with their own self serving goals to accomplish.

What starts off as needing to use one another, very quickly turns into a shared understanding that neither are happy with the status quo.

They joined forces in the hopes of not only accomplishing their goals, but by the end, changing their world.

So, the tally is
I now need a fourth Compass Point book, which really when you think about it is necessary because there are four points on the compass so you know… you gotta
And now I need a second in this book

Bargains with Benefits is the perfect entry point for romance lovers curious about fantasy. Most “romantasy” books I’ve read lean heavily on the fantasy/adventure side, with romance taking a back seat. This one flips the script—it feels more like a young adult romance that just happens to be set in another world… or so I thought! Around the 60–70% mark, the heat really kicks in. Once the characters get their hands on each other, they do not let go. It gets steamy.

The burn is slow, but the tension more than makes up for it. Yes, there’s the classic trope of not talking about feelings for too long, but what stood out here is that both characters were aware of their emotions early on—they just chose to keep them to themselves. That self-awareness made their yearning feel more authentic.

I loved their dynamic: shameless flirting (Vincent’s wind had no chill) mixed with witty banter that managed to be playful yet meaningful. Their connection developed in a way that felt organic and believable. Even during the brief “we’re not into each other” phase (which lasted maybe 10 pages), their chemistry made it obvious they couldn’t stay apart.

My only real issue was that it took a while for me to stop skim-reading and get fully invested. Also, I wasn’t sure how to feel about Vincent’s wind almost having a personality of its own—but once you lean into the vibe, it becomes oddly charming and actually helps carry the romantic tension.

It’s been a while since I’ve read a book where the dead mother isn’t treated like the Virgin Mary, the estranged father gets a believable redemption arc, and the characters don’t need a third-act breakup to realize they mean everything to each other.

Overall, this was a great read, even if it’s a bit outside my usual genre comfort zone. It sets things up nicely for the next book, and I’m excited to see how the hinted-at messy love triangle plays out!

Summary: Bargains with Benefits is a flirty, slow-burn Romantasy where the romance leads and the fantasy adds spice (literally, thanks to Vincent’s sassy wind). It starts cute, ends steamy, and sets up a juicy love triangle for book two. A fun, breezy read with surprising heat

✨Bargains with Benefits✨

Author: Jillian Witt
Release: June 3, 2025

Not my typical review. You ask, why? Well because this book hit me in the feels quite immensely as the FMC’s family dynamic looked almost equal to my own. You know the book is good when it relates to you on a deeper level than simply adventure. And even more so when it’s full of a beautiful and healthy way to move through said hardships, which Jillian always excels at.

As she did in her trilogy, Compass Points, Jillian once again uses fae, elemental magic, banter, and romance to create a story that is not only entertaining and swoon worthy, but touching in the way it addresses mental health, family dysfunction, and healthy communication. Also set in the world of Compass Points, BWB occurs after but is also easily readable without having read the series. The old laws have been broken and the new ways of acceptance are crashing through, but not everyone gets on board.

As Luna is offered her dream job, she must find a way to fill her family Inn before she loses it. And while Vincent seeks to climb the corporate ladder of his newspaper, he is given a topic that could boost his career but also ruin another’s. Luna and Vincent realize that they can help one another, striking a bargain, but the bargain they struck may be more than what they truly “bargained” for.

This book is cosy and precious and well written, but it is also deep, meaningful, and thoughtful in its simplicity. I felt encouraged, seen, and hopeful as I moved through the pages. Luna’s family issues brought up my own, but seeing hers move to an optimistic outcome as mine did, I felt comforted.

Tropes you may find in BWB are healthy communication, reluctant allis to lovers, wound tending, opposites attract, his magic is obsessed with her, “I’ll catch you”, medium spice, cozy Romantasy, found family, and a HEA.

Jillian, thank you again for a stunningly heartfelt story as well as letting me be an arc read for you again. It is such a pleasure.

This was such a fun and cozy read!

I loved how Witt was able to weave this new series into the existing world of her Compass Points series. While you don’t have to have read any of Witt’s prior books to fully enjoy this book, I am now super excited to dive into more Witt books because of the connections!

I loved the political dynamics at play amongst the different fae families and who they thought were “worthy enough” to be educated in magic. As Luna was only half-fae, there were many who believed she shouldn’t be able to practice or be educated in magic because she was not a full fae. While there were some fae families who you could tell were bad news (*cough cough*), there were others who genuinely surprised me as time went on. Witt did a fantastic job with the twist and I loved how heartwarming it all felt when all the cards were on the table.

Speaking of political dynamics and twists, I loved how Vincent was trying to get ahead in work and get his name on a “better” column going forward, therefore had to investigate a rather salacious tip about one of the old fae families. I loved that this was a tad bit like one of my favorite movies, 27 dresses, but I also loved how Vincent approached it with integrity; he felt as though no one else would do the piece justice and that being from an old fae family himself, he knew he would investigate properly but also not hold prejudices against the old fae for their bloodline. I thought this was a great character trait in him and it definitely won me over from the start.

I loved that even though Vincent was old fae and he appeared to be very straight-laced, he actually had a bit of a rebellious side. For example, he moved out of his parents’ home (something fae, especially fae heirs, don’t do). This small fact really gave him a lot of dimension in my eyes and I loved it.

I absolutely loved Vincent’s wind powers and how they had a mind of their own!! It was so fun to see his wind sell out his true emotions, while he tried to stay calm, cool, and collected around Luna. It was hilarious and definitely helped these two realize their feelings for each other sooner than I think they would have otherwise. His wind powers were definitely the comic relief of the story 😊

I adored the push and pull between Evelyn and Ambrose, academic rivals and friends to the FMC and MMC respectively. I really want them to have their own story next; I will scoop that up so fast!!

Thank you to Jillian Witt for the opportunity to read this book. The thoughts and opinions expressed above are honest and my own.

4.25 stars!

📖: Bargains with Benefits (Fae by the Bay Book 1)
🌸: Releasing June 3, 2025

With the curse broken and recent political changes, the continent is still adjusting. Luna, a half fae, doesn’t acknowledge her fae side and exhibits no magic. When her influential estranged fae father offers her a chance to save the inn close to her heart, she strikes a bargain with a handsome fae journalist.

Vincent could care less about being old Fae, but to help fulfill his bargain with Luna, he aims to revamp her image to appeal to fae tastes. Neither expected to fall for the other, exactly as they are.

Tropes:
👀Dual POV
💗Cozy romantasy
🌬️Wind daddy
↔️Opposites attract
🩹Wound tending
💫Magic, bargains, & bonds
⚠️Darcy & Elizabeth vibes
💖HEA

Luna and Vincent are driven by their ambitions and good intentions but are weighed down by societal expectations and familial drama. The author explores their complicated feelings of mutual interest and mistrust that turns into understating, unwavering support, and adoration. Their love story was tantalizing and sweet in equal measure!

In Bargains with Benefits, Jillian weaves pure magic in this low-stakes, “his magic is obsessed with her,” cozy Romantasy.

This story is set in the same world as The Compass Points series and can be read as a standalone. I cannot wait for the next story in this series!

Huge thanks to the author for the ARC opportunity! This is my honest and voluntary review.

This book was pitched as a cozy Romantasy and wow it delivered!!

Dual POVs with Luna and Vincent were absolutely adorable. I loved getting to learn about them both, and witness both of their character growth.

While the initial premise appears to be about saving an Inn, we get a fun mystery, political intrigue, and tension between Luna and Vincent that has everyone around them blushing.

This was cute, charming, and a little spicy. Even better....drum roll...we had some great communication! In a very un-fae like move, honesty is important in this story, and it causes a very satisfying turn of events throughout the book

If you need something to read that makes your heart happy and causes a smile or two, definitely pick up Bargains with Benefits.

overall: highly recommend

Absolutely lost my mind reading Bargains with Benefits. The twists had me full-on keysmashing 😭 I took SO many notes because I couldn’t stop freaking out. The mains gave me major Gwynriel vibes (the tension and the magics!!), and those cliffhangers?? I am SIDE EYEING Lord Arctos and scolding Evelyn already. A little sad that Luna never actually called Darius dad esp bc she called Eloise Gram. Regardless, I need the next book ASAP! I CAN'T WAIT! I NEED books/love stories for: Darius, Jeffrey, Skye. Sooo much potential!!

3.5 cute and cozy read. Loved the magical elements and setting. A little mystery element woven in. I didn't find it particularly exciting and it was more on the predictable side, but the characters were pretty likable and the pacing was steady. Also appreciated that it was a shorter length and didn't drag things out unnecessarily. Would recommend if you want an easy, comfort read that mixes romance and magic.

"The bartender was a tempest at sea, and I watched from the safety of shore."

I'd like to thank NetGalley, Jillian Witt, and Victory Editing for providing me with an eARC of Bargains with Benefits in exchange for a review.

Bargains with Benefits is a fantastic low stakes romantic fantasy that leaves you wanting to delve deeper into the Compass Points universe that it is set in.

With complicated family dynamics, found family, instant attraction, and even a little bit of fake dating thrown in if that's kind of your thing, this book blew all my expectations out of the water.

However, I do feel that the inclusion of spice in this book actually detracted from the experience for me in what is otherwise a very sweet, soft, and cosy romance.

This is book one in the Fae by the Bae series, which can be read as a standalone, and I'll absolutely return for future instalments

✨ARC REVIEW✨ This little book was so fun and cute! It’s a cozy fantasy with just the right amount of sassy and spicy mixed in! The two main characters Luna and Vincent were really great characters who went through well written character development as individuals and as a couple. THE SLOW BURN (or at least as slow as a standalone can be ya know)!!!!!! It was a little heavy on the miscommunication trope and that’s one of my least favorites tbh, but it made sense for the story and it wasn’t annoying enough to really take away from the ready experience. How nice it was to read about two mid-late 20s adults who learn to develop healthy communication and a beautiful, healthy, supportive, sexy relationship! There was also a great ensemble of side characters that I really felt like we got to know and I can’t wait to maybe learn more about each of them! I would also like to add that I’m not usually a big fan of smutty books, but this was just the right amount. The smutty scenes included were ~descriptive~ but they were all at the end of the book (slow burn 🔥) and there weren’t a lot. Overall I would totally recommend this book! I’m also really excited to read the authors other books and see what new works she puts out in the future!

Cute little story set in the same universe as the Compass Points!

We get the same awesome magical system, but I really loved the cute and cosy vibes of this story. I also enjoyed investigating a mystery, the politics, and the small town vibes in this grumpy x sunshine story.

Thank you Jillian Witt for the eARC

January 2026 - Reread in audio.
Thank you to Jillian for the gifted ALC.
Audiobook will be available on january 27.

As I loved reading this book last year, I was glad to have the possibility of listening to the audiobook.

It is narrated by Michael Gallagher and Kasi Hollowell in dual style.
Both narrators did a great job bringing the story and the characters to life.
I had a great time going back to this magic world and I really felt part of the story.

If you did not read this book yet, I recommend the audiobook.

May 2025 - initial review

"Bargains with Benefits" by Jillian Witt is a cozy standalone romantasy with spice in the Fae by the Bay series.
The Fae by the Bay series is set in the same world as Compass Points.

Thank you The Realm Studios for the opportunity of reading the ARC.
Opinions from this review are completely my own.

What you can expect:
- fae bargains
- magic
- opposites attract
- slow burn romance
- a sweet and spicy story
- a cozy fantasy

Luna, a half fae, always wanted to run the Cliff House Inn, but her estranged fae father wants to sell it, as it doesn't have visitors.
He agrees to keep it if she manages to book all the rooms until Long Night.
Vincent is a fae journalist that needs help with an investigation involving Luna's dad.
So they make a bargain to help each other.

This is the first book I read from this author and I have to say that it enchanted me.
The world and the magic is interesting and the relationship between Vincent and Luna developed so well.
One of my favorite parts was Vincent's wind, that showed Luna so much affection from the start and acted like a wingman.
As the romance was such a slow burn, I did not expect become so hot after they finally got together.

I loved the way they worked together and helped each other, while developing a friendship that turned into love.
They both had issues with their parents, and that only got them closer.

This is a very sweet, heart-warming and engaging story and I can't wait to read the rest of the series.
