The National Geographic Society (NGS), headquartered in Washington, D.C., United States, is one of the largest nonprofit scientific and educational organizations in the world. Founded in 1888, its interests include geography, archaeology, and natural science, the promotion of environmental and historical conservation, and the study of world culture and history. The National Geographic Society's logo is a yellow portrait frame—rectangular in shape—which appears on the margins surrounding the front covers of its magazines and as its television channel logo. Through National Geographic Partners (a joint venture with The Walt Disney Company), the Society operates the magazine, TV channels, a website, worldwide events, and other media operations.
Picked this up at B&N bargain book table and gave it a read. Very good on the basics and with assignments for beginning photographers to stretch their wings with.
I just got a DSLR so I picked this up at Barnes & Noble for a little inspiration. I figured I'd just skim through it and look at the pictures, but I found myself actually reading it cover to cover. The "Tool Kit" part was a little basic but I liked all of the assignments and the tips and analyses of the photographs sprinkled throughout. The inspiration and high quality of the photos and articles definitely made it worth 10 bucks!
While I am always open to new ideas and looking at work from professionals, I felt like this book might not be for the non-professional photographer. I'm not an amateur and not a big professional, but I felt like the photos they included were places a lot of us just won't get to. I think it would have been really effective to pair the advice/assignments with photographs from everyday places. Other than that, it was a quick, lovely read.
Having just taken a NatGeo workshop, I'm totally stoked to have read this book. My creativity machine is on overload! Love this book. Every photographer should read it!
