Urban Books’ popular Girls From da Hood series is back, bringing readers more dramatic tales about the lives of some tough, resourceful women who can hold their own when things get rough on the streets. This time, family bonds are put to the test.
Jakki and School Boy are more than first cousins; they’re best friends and partners in crime with a reputation for getting theirs by any means necessary. The pair are ultimately forced to defend not only their family name but their loyalty to each other. With both wanting to stand at the head of the table, Jakki and School Boy feud, proving that there’s definitely no honor amongst thieves—family or not.
Sani, a well- known female gambling house owner, is at the top of her game, but after she decides to inject phony currency into her business, all hell breaks loose. Guns are drawn and opposing forces take sides. Luckily for Sani, her father and her brothers are well versed in the operations of the underworld. With millions of dollars still to be claimed, all the wolves come out, and the hunting season begins. Will the love of that mean green shatter families and friends, or will the players prove that money can't buy everything?
It was a little too stereotypical for me. I liked her Baltimore Chronicles much better. Death, robbery and mayhem are par for the course in this trilogy.
Out of all three stories, the second was probably the best. That is not saying a lot. Treasure Hernandez's books are usually way better than the short story she wrote for it.
this book was not really my cup of tea the early girls from the hood books was good but the latest ones just hasn't been able to hold my attention . . .
All in the Fam: Cozy start as girls pop pills in a living room, until jail-hard Jakki calls 17 y/o Lena a “stutter box in a skirt” for not being down for a robbery. Jakki’s cousin School Boy is who got her mixed up in this Detroit clothes-stealing venture and soon proves he doesn’t care if she, her girls, or family live or die. Goddamn, how is Jack just realizing this when he’s suspected of trying to burn their house down when she wouldn’t share Halloween candy! And now that he’s hooked on lean and opiates? Double trouble.
The next story is about Sana, a girl who tore up Atlanta w/ coke deals now on the run to Philly. Her friend Joy used to be her dad’s sugar baby. At a club, Sana runs into Boo, a well-hated thug who makes “funny money” like a pro minter. Reluctantly, she mulls over his offer. Everybody’s always got their finger on a trigger. The marital problems are great and the casino/restaurant setting is refreshing. Definitely laughed when a girl’s 🐱 is described as her “jelly jar.” 2/3 through and I lose interest and start skimming hard. They seem to make money in a way that doesn’t make sense, way too fast and easy for running a promotion that started lackluster.
Sack-chasing Star: 19y/o Star in Detroit is fleeced by her lazy mom and dude. This gets her eye set on Rilla, a pill-rich casual guy. Lots of scrappy whores and idiotic men.
