17/7/20 This book is fantastic haha! Damn, I really forgot how much I loved the anime. I generally don't read that much light-hearted fun stuff, but this is so silly and comical -- just an absolute treat to read :)
17/7/20 I watched the anime adaptation of this ages ago and remember it fondly. Now diving into this manga I am reminded of what I fun time I had reading this :)
Seki is up to his antics again, hardly ever paying attention during class and having a bag packed full of games instead of schoolwork. He tries to impress Yokoi with a magic trick, Japanese chess with a seemingly tragic, heroic story, table top golf, zombie Othello, and so much more. The class also takes a trip to a camp, where Yokoi gets a rare glimpse at her neighbor’s childhood. Back in class, the two are noticed by Goto, who desperately wants to be Yokoi’s friend, but thinks all they’re up to is sneaking kisses and loving glances during class.
Similarly to the first volume, most of this story takes place inside Yokoi’s head. She invents a storyline for the Japanese chess pieces based young the kanji Seki has drawn. She spends a lot more time thinking about what Seki’s doing and even less time paying attention. The addition of Goto, plus taking the story outside the walls of the classroom, was really needed to add some depth to the story, and provides a lot of opportunity to continue with the humor of the story. I think Seki’s “I did a magic trick, be impressed” face is my favorite so far in this series. It’s just so cute and outlandish.
All of Seki’s games continue to be beautiful and drawn with a lot of detail. Yes, this story is ultimately about not paying attention in class, and how that negatively affects Yokoi, but this is a worry purchase for Seki’s continued antics and the humor throughout the story.
Macam Rumi cakap-- Seki is such a cheeky jerk. In a cute way, of course. I always find it amazing on how Seki could survive doing all that stuff while in class. Tapi menariknya hubungan sahabat Rumi Yokoi dan Seki ini buat saya rasa pelik pula kalau tiba-tiba Seki acting all normal.
Rasa kasihan sungguh saya dengan Rumi. A fun and cute read, sama macam yang pertama. Entah apalah Seki nak buat selepas ini.
I thought this was a romance by the cover. (It's a comedy.) Book 1 was lost by my library but I decided to give it a go. Since this is a gag comedy there's no plot so I wasn't confused. I was thoroughly amused. :)
Our copy at the library was missing a ton of pages, so a lot of the gags were missing either the setup or the punchline, which made reading it kind of a chore.
Such a fun manga. Love the anime, but glad I get to see some of the manga didn't make it into the anime, so I could really enjoy the manga too. I think my favorite was the class trip. Seki is such a little devil.
More ridiculous hilarity as Seki plays more ridiculous games that disturb Yokoi. But now there's a third classmate, Goto, who has only seen part of the goings ons, and has developed an entirely different reason for Yokoi's intense glances at Seki.
When I realized this was a manga series available through my library, I just put a hold on the first two volumes, because why not. I think this one included more episodes that I was unfamiliar with, since they weren't adapted for the anime. The developing misunderstanding of Yokoi's and Seki's relationship by Goto is amusing. I think in the anime it came up in just one episode, but it appears to a recurring theme in the manga, so I will probably read more.
Also, I love the font and back covers showing Seki goofing off; this one with the murder-mystery investigation and reveal of a hidden passage is especially entertaining.
The thing that made this book and made me laugh so hard was the fact that more of the students got "in on it" without realizing what was going on. Her friend's wrong opinion of their relationship had me busting seams. I really like how the rest of the class is getting fleshed out and not simply blank faces in a crowd.
This series is freaking hilarious. Seki plays more ridiculous games that disturb the main character Yoko. The only flaw is that this series is a one hit story. Seki does something silly and Yoko gives an over the top reaction. Still I was laughing all the way to the end of the book.
3.5 stars for me. A librarian I know recommended this Manga to me. It is super silly and I enjoyed the unique way the story unfolds. There is very minimal spoken dialogue but endless humorous and imaginative thoughts and narration by Yokoi. Very fun indeed.
The adventures of goofing off continue. This series is perfect for when you want a light hearted read. We're meeting new classmates and their connections to the pair.
Started watching the anime. Like the anime lot more, so I’m just gonna stick to that and drop the manga. In my opinion it isn’t so amazing where I want to watch & read it.
