Auntie Clem's Bakery #25

Mock Apple Alibi

Rate this book

In the picturesque town of Bald Eagle Falls, rich stories are woven as perfectly as a pie's golden lattice top and the alibis are just as fake as mock apple pie. Erin and Vic must cut deep to solve a sting of mysterious disappearances.

Welcome back to Bald Eagle Falls, where Erin Price is serving up more than delicious treats at Auntie Clem’s Bakery. This time, the recipe for disaster includes missing persons, clan warfare, and a mock apple pie that’s not as fake as the alibis flying around town!

What’s on the Menu?

A Missing Mother: Mary Lou Cox vanishes without a trace, leaving her son Cam frantic and the whole town stirring up gossip like a bad batch of sourdough.
A Vanishing Bookseller: Naomi, the owner of the Book Nook, also disappears, leaving Erin with more questions than answers.
A Deadly Intruder: As if that weren’t enough, a masked gunman warns Erin and her friend and employee Vic to stay out of clan business. Talk about a half-baked threat!
Clan Chaos: With Willie Andrews trying to maintain peace while navigating loyalty issues that would make a soap opera writer jealous, tensions are higher than a soufflé about to collapse.
Culinary Conundrums: Can Erin craft a deliciously deceiving gluten-free mock apple pie to add to the menu of Auntie Clem’s Bakery?

Will Erin cook up enough clues to solve the mystery before someone gets permanently whisked away? Or will she and Vic find themselves on the wrong end of a family recipe for disaster?

So intense!

While the word “intense” may not be the first term to come to mind when talking about a cozy mystery series, it certainly fits this story. The not-so-sleepy town of Bald Eagle Falls is in a state of unrest and anxiety is escalating daily as tensions between the feuding Dyson and Jackson clans rise. To make matters worse, citizens are disappearing with no clues left behind as to why or where they are going. Do the disappearances have anything to do with the increased clan activity or are they unrelated? Some of the missing persons may have ties to the clans but others do not. As always, whenever a mystery descends on the town, Erin, the proprietor of Auntie Clem’s Bakery, is determined to get to the bottom of it. And never more so than when people dear to her begin disappearing with no explanation or warning. What follows is a positively riveting tale of small town politics, loyalty, compassion, and enduring friendship. It is a cozy mystery (no graphic or explicit material) but it is intense in its emotional content. P. D. Workman, a USA Today bestselling author and winner of multiple awards for her 100+ books spanning multiple series and multiple genres, is masterful at creating characters so rich in texture that you can’t help but care about them. Diversity and inclusivity feature prominently in all her stories. I find them captivating and perfect for an entertaining diversionary reading experience. This one, in particular, is a nail-biter that kept me on the edge of my chair up to the very last page. Highly recommended.

In PD Workman's Mock Apple Alibi, feuding gangs bring terror and unexplained disappearances to town. What's going on, and can everyone be trusted?
Erin's quite bewildered at times, and in danger at others, as we're caught up in the tide of lies and intrigue. She and detective boyfriend Terry work to rescue her friends and colleagues, with help from
friends and police.
Mock Apple Alibi is slightly  whimsical, has fascinating characters and a dynamic storyline - what's not to like?

Poor Erin! Everyone is disappearing with no evidence where they’ve gone. There are several layers of mysteries here but I had my suspicions fairly early on. Just couldn’t figure out why. I also figured out the one involving Willie. I loved this book. It showed that the community cared about each other more than they showed. Mrs. Peach is a wily old gal. I LOVED her performance! Brilliant!

Erin Price is concerned when people in the little town go missing. Local clans are clashing. Is there a connection? As always, Ms. Workman delivers an exceptional tale, with a nice twisty plot, and characters who are well developed and believable. Highly recommended! I enjoyed this book and am looking forward to the next in the series. I received a complimentary copy of this book and chose to write a voluntary, unbiased review.

Mock Apple Alibi begins with Erin, the baker in Auntie Clem’s bakery, and her assistant, Vic, trying to come up with a reason why a well-respected mother would have just disappeared off the face of the earth, leaving her teen aged son and disabled husband behind. And she’s not the only one to have come up missing. Add to that the unease brought on by the 2 local clan families and everyone is feeling the tension. How do they get to the bottom of who is behind the disappearances? And how can they get the families to strike a bargain to work with each other?

This is the 25th book in the Auntie Clem’s Bakery Series. It’s a standalone book, which put simply just means you can read this or any other book in the series on its own or with the other books and still enjoy them. That being said, the books do share some amount of continuity and I have enjoyed getting to know the characters as I have read the books. I would recommend you read them all, since they are all great books and I have really enjoyed reading them. I enjoy how the writer has fleshed out her characters and brought them to life. The plot and background are well formed and add to the whole of the story. I appreciate the attention to detail the author has. She researches all of her books and includes little snippets of information that show that she’s done her homework.
