This book swept me into a powerful roller coaster of emotions from the very first page to the last. Rick Wentworth’s story is deeply moving—his journey tugs at the heart, evoking tears, anger, hope, and ultimately, joy. Though parts of the plot are heavy and unsettling—especially the abuse Rick endured—they’re written with care and purpose, offering insight rather than shock. As a person of faith, I found the spiritual themes especially meaningful. The story is filled with profound reminders of God’s presence, grace, and the strength that comes from believing. It’s a heartfelt, unforgettable read that lingers long after the final chapter. Kudos to the author!!!

Wow. Just wow.
I don’t even know where to begin because Half Agony, Half Hope wrecked me—in the most beautiful way.
The friendship between Rick Wentworth and Darcy? I LOVED it. Seriously, the bromance is real. Darcy’s that rare kind of friend, and the way he shows up for Rick… just had me in my feelings big time.
But what really got me? Rick’s relationship with his kids, especially little Ellie. Their moments together were so tender and real. And don’t even get me started on Quackers, her little stuffed animal—honestly, that duck deserves its own award. The scenes with all of his children were both heartbreaking and full of so much hope. You can feel how much Rick adores them.
Also, as a Disney Magic Key Passholder, I will never look at Pluto the same way again. Sweet Lily, . There’s one scene in particular that totally hit me—and yeah, I cried. A lot.
This book isn’t an easy read emotionally, but it’s so worth it.
If you're thinking about reading it—just do it. But maybe don’t read in public if you don't want to be compared to a watering pot. Trust me.

This book was certainly not what I expected, but it had me on the edge of my seat wanting to know what happened to the characters Rick and his daughter Lily, who were held captive in a basement for a decade. I found myself rooting for the characters, wanting them to escape their forced predicament. The read only took me a few days. The book had areas of hope in the darkest moments, because without hope, what do any of us have? It definitely captured my interest from start to finish!
I cheered for Rick when he finally managed to get the long-deserved help for him and his daughter from their humiliating existence. And I was so grateful he had a friend like Darcy who helped him rebuild his life with ALL his children. Add in some extras and the page was an exciting page turner from beginning to end.

If you’re expecting a light-hearted and romantic retelling of Jane Austen’s Persuasion, this book is not it.
It is, however, a story about overcoming abuse and trauma with courage, hope, and faith. The author treats the subject matter with gravity and honesty. Difficult to read but also inspiring as Rick finds his way to healing and a true family.

Excellent. A tearjerker.
Sometimes I have trouble reading a lot of descriptive text and books, especially torture stuff. That means I skipped over part of the book where he was captive and missed out on a lot, for example of the birth of his other sons and daughters, I learned later, however even so. It was a fabulous read and felt real true life.

a Powerful Story of God in the Agony
I couldn’t put this book down. I’ll admit I did skip a lot in the painful first half of the book, but there’s that option. Beginning each chapter with a quote from the main character’s journal was very effective. I love the last half of the book, the part of Hope, and how God was threaded through it. I was rooting hard for the main character all the way through. A powerful story.

Wow. Just… wow.
I didn’t think anything could hit me as hard as Half Agony, Half Hope—but Wholly Free somehow did.
This isn’t just “more of Rick’s story.” It’s like sitting down with him over coffee while he opens his journal and lets you see the pages he wrote in the quiet moments—the raw prayers, the verses he clung to when it all felt too much, and the truths that slowly replaced the lies he’d believed for years.
I loved how the book blends pieces from the novel with scripture, prayers, and reflection questions that actually make you think (none of that “fill in the blank” fluff). There’s one section that contrasts Satan’s lies with God’s promises, and I swear it felt like it was written directly to me.
And yes are mentioned here too (!), because hope and healing aren’t just about the big, dramatic moments—they’re in the little, everyday ones too.
This is the kind of book you don’t just read once. You keep it on your nightstand, you underline it, you dog-ear it, and you come back to it on the hard days. It’s gentle, it’s honest, and it’s full of the reminder that no one is too far gone for God’s grace.

A unique telling
The hook was captivating. It made me want to read more. The relationship with Anne felt incomplete. Like why did she behave the way she did?
I felt all the emotions, especially when the kids were involved. I probably wouldn’t have been hopeful at all, but his walk with God made it possible for him.
Spoiler alert***:
When the doctor came and saw what was going on and didn’t alert anyone, it was kind of unreal. We never found out how he was punished ( Or I missed it.) Louisa didn’t get what she deserved either. I was hoping Rick would strangle her with his chains and send Lily up to get help. She wasn’t always in shackles.

An Emotional Rollercoaster
There is only one word for this unique tale. Wow! Imagine being held captive for ten years, enduring unimaginably horrific conditions and abuse by a person who wore the face of someone you had loved.
Writing a review without giving too much of the plot away isn't easy. Read the sample. I guarantee the first chapter will hook you in. You, like me, will need to see how the protagonist, Rick, ended up in his dire situation, alongside someone he loves whose life hangs in the balance.
Despite the horror the main protagonist suffers, Joy writes with care, withholding graphic descriptions of his torment but still drawing a gut-wrenching image in the reader's mind that leaves no doubt about what is happening.
If you liked the film or book "The Collector," then imagine that, but with gender role reversals and a lot more that will leave you gobsmacked, wondering how someone could survive in such an environment without going insane.
Joy's Christian faith is clear, and Rick's journey to recover the life he lost and to make up for his lost years of fatherhood as he heals will warm your heart, but will also bring you to tears as the damage to his elder daughter is one of the hardest things to overcome.
This story will stay with me for a long time.

I just finished Half Agony, Half Hope, and I’m still processing it. This isn’t the kind of book you rush through, it’s one you sit with. The emotional depth really stood out to me. The way the story explores pain, while slowly introducing moments of hope, felt very real and not exaggerated. I found myself reflecting on parts of my own life while reading. It’s honest, sometimes heavy, but ultimately meaningful. Definitely a book that stays with you.

Although this book is very difficult to read because of the subject, it allowed me to see how someone will sacrifice everything to protect those they love. I do want to let readers know this book talks about a very sensitive subject that could be a trigger for some.
I have read books about women going through this topic but never have I read about a man enduring it. The long span that Rick suffered at the hands of a woman overwhelms me at times. He lives everyday with physical and emotional pain. How could he live day after day locked up with no contact with the outside world?
The story delivers a look at what unconditional love is when Rick who is locked in a basement cares for his daughter with little food or clothing. As Lily becomes older her father shares his journal that opens wounds that must be healed. Each entry brought raw emotion as she begins to realize that growing up for her was filled with deep emotional scars.
I applaud the author for illustrating unconditional love, hope and faith that never wavered. Although Rick experienced what we can only imagine, he showed that God had never left him. At times I wasn’t sure if I could read the next journal entry, but I knew I had to follow his journey to see how God can take the darkest moments of our life and show us freedom from what the enemy meant for harm .

This devotional is deeply personal—not only because it follows the fictional journey of Rick Wentworth from Half Agony, Half Hope, but because it represents my heart’s desire to speak to anyone who has walked through darkness and dared to believe that light still exists on the other side.
Each chapter was prayerfully written, weaving together Scripture, reflection, and excerpts from Rick’s fictional journal to create a companion guide for those seeking healing from trauma, grief, guilt, or despair. It’s not a light read—but it is a hopeful one. And more than anything, I wanted readers to feel seen. To feel known. To know that Christ’s love is unshakable, even when everything else feels broken.

Half Agony, Half Hope: Dear Lily Edition by Joy Michelle Austin starts out with Lily's fiancé canceling the wedding and she goes to her father. Her father gives her letters that he wrote during a hard time in their lives. The story is partly told in these letters. Even through the theme of this book is a hard subject is it written in a clean way. It is a story of redemption and grace. If you like contemporary fiction that shows God's love and also a father's love for his daughter, then this book is for you. But it might be a trigger for some. I think this is the first book that I have read that is told from a male victim. This book is written because the author says readers wanted more gentleness in the story. I haven't read the first book, but I am trying to decide if I want to because of personal issues in my own life. I really like books that shows God's love and gives hope that readers can cling to long after they close the book.

Half Agony, Half Hope: Dear Lily Edition is part of the Jane Austen's Men series by Joy Michelle Austin. This is my first introduction to this author's work and it will not be the last. I enjoyed reading Lily's story and seeing everything unfold for her. I thought it was a sweet tale of discovery, love, and hope. It was a heartwarming book and loved it.
I am going to give Half Agony, Half Hope: Dear Lily Edition four and a half stars. I recommend it for readers who enjoy reading clean contemporary fiction. I would be interested in reading the other books from the Jane Austen's Men series, as well.
