Portland Symphony #1

Here Comes Treble: A Low-Angst M/M Romance

Rate this book
How it

I’ve casually dated my sister’s friends for years–what can I say? She’s got great taste in people. But Chance is apparently the best roommate in the world–he’s quiet, thoughtful, and willing to put up with her chaotic ways, so this time, Hillary says it’s hands off. No excuses.

How it’s

I may have allowed myself to be seduced on their couch, and now he’s calling me to come over to Netflix (musicals) and chill. I’m not sure what scares me more–my sister finding out that I broke her rule… or the way I’m falling head over heels for a nerd I’ve got no business wanting.

Here Comes Treble is the first book in the Portland Symphony series, a steamy, low-angst, queer romance series set in Oregon. If you like a neurodiverse trans hero, a cis himbo who's scared of robots, found family, and a happily ever after, you’ll love this book. It’s not intended for readers under eighteen or readers who don’t want to read explicit sex scenes. CW for the death of a pet fish and brief discussions about transphobia and police violence. This book was previously published under the title Acoustics and has undergone minor editing for style and content.

Many thanks to the author for giving me an advance copy of Acoustics! I really enjoyed this book, it was like a breath of fresh air.

The central romance involves a trans man, and the MC is bi or pan; it was really delightful to see these characters live their lives without layers of trauma. Don't get me wrong, I love a good cathartic journey through trauma and hardship, but so too is it cathartic to have queer characters who don't have to justify their existence or struggle with their identities. The MC's unquestioning, supportive family gives me big "Schitt's Creek" vibes. Colby is just a queer man living his queer life and he doesn't have to explain himself to his parents or his sister, they just accept his sexuality on its face.

The love interest, Chance, is hella relatable. Shy, inward, but when things heat up, sexy AF. The sex scenes are HAWT and the character beats throughout are delightful.

Come for a beautiful story of a young man falling in love, stay for the unquestioning acceptance of queer identities.

(I received an Advanced Review Copy of this book by the author.) I absolutely devoured this book in a matter of hours. I loved everything about it, and if you're in the mood for a steamy queer romance, I heartily recommend this one. The hot scenes are quite hot, but what I liked best was the humorous, heartfelt way the relationship between Colby and Chance developed --told in Colby's upbeat, honest (and endearingly himbo) voice.

An easy romance that could have done more...

This was a very easy read and I tore through it in one sitting but it wasn't particularly memorable.

The good:
 ~ likeable characters
 ~ Colby doing research about trans people to make sure he doesn't make any missteps with Chance
 ~ I can't speak personally on the trans rep, but it felt honest and wasn't dwelled on or used as a plot tool in any way
 ~ good variety of sex scenes, I also liked that the smaller MC is the one who took charge in bed
 ~ I liked the compromise they found between their different social needs, Chance is introverted and isn't forced to socialise when he's uncomfortable, and he also understands that Colby is an extravert and will need more social contact than him

The less good:
 ~ lacked emotional depth, I wished there was more focus on Chance's anxiety, there could have been more hurt/comfort
 ~ in theory the timeline was good, because this story spans a few months, but I feel like a lot of the casual getting-to-know-you parts were skipped over
 ~ YMMV but I'm not a fan of first person present POV

Short contemporary M/M romance featuring sweet heat and trans joy

I dove into Acoustics on a whim, and that whim lasted just two reading sessions until I finished it. This book is a delight from page one, with writing that is by turns tight, moving, and whimsical. I love love loved the characters, and the progression of their relationship was fast and heart-warming. I had not read a romance featuring a trans character before, and Price nailed it for me, showing sensitivity and awareness of trans issues while keeping the focus on the romance. At its heart, it’s just a love story of two men who find each other in a very real contemporary setting.

The romance was sweet but the sex scenes were hot, though not as blistering as some of the M/M romances I have read. There was an emotional depth to those scenes that I especially enjoyed, beyond the excellently titillating spiciness, with just the right amount of space between scenes to keep you thirsty but not so much that you suffer irreversible dehydration. There’s a delightful little detail at the end that really summed up the evolution of the characters, which I won’t spoil but suffice it to say I found it very satisfying.

My only hesitation, which is not really a critique, is the length. It’s about half the length of a typical novel, and it’s a bit short even by romance standards, but that really worked for me—it’s a book I was able to finish in two sittings (some of you will finish it in one), and it left me satisfied while also smashing the “buy now” button on the next book, Harmony.

3.5 stars. This was a nice story overall, but the sister character is awful (note: the sister is one of the MCs in book 2, where we find out some of the reasons for her awfulness. But still. I would have wanted some hints of that in this book too, so she didn't just seem like a selfish jerk)

Acoustics is a trans M/M romance and the start of the Portland Symphony series. It may also be London Price’s debut book but I’m not 100% sure on that. I believe that this may be the first trans-masc romance that I’ve read, or at least the first one I’ve read in a very long time, and I was blown away. The book itself is short (about 100ish pages) and therefore the story moves quickly and kept things engaging.

Colby and Chance are our two heroes. Colby is bi or pan and his sister is roommates with Colby who is trans masculine. Colby’s sister makes him promise not to get involved with Chance which means they have to hide their relationship. I really really really liked both Colby and Chance. I felt like Chance’s character as a trans man was treated with a lot of dignity and respect. I liked that he actually got to masculine. I especially loved that Chance was the more dominant person in the relationship. Their relationship was super steamy and also deeply emotional.

I really enjoyed the book as a whole and am looking forward to reading the next book in the series. Thank you to NetGalley and Joyful Trans Romance for the ARC.

I had the chance to work with @pridebooktours to bring you a review of Acoustics by London Price !! ( thank u so much for the #gifted arc ) read on for a short blurb and the review below :)

When I started this book, I was absolutely hooked -romance books done right always do that to me lol -I seriously finished this book within one sitting on the train up to Boston. It was that good guys 😂 The story follows Colby who has a long track record of dating + dumping his sisters friends. Due to this, Colby promises her that he won’t flirt with her new Roomate. However once he meets Chance, Colby finds it increasingly harder to stay away ;)

The relationship between Chance and Colby was written so lovely. As the story developed it remained very honest between the two of them. A perfect mix of humor, a heartfelt story and steamy scenes

This is a good quick read if you're in a slump. I enjoyed it. I thought the plot was fun and the idea of them sneaking around was cool. Colby was a funny MMC and Chance was the perfect duality of that.

Delightful. Poignant. Cheerful. Worth the time and pages. An exciting and strong read that offers much enjoyment. Fast-paced and edgy. The transgender theme is brilliant and done quite well. A caring and supportive book that is socially right for our times. A sweet and enjoyable love story with a few fun twists and turns. Remarkable dialogue. Strong setting. A promising build-up with an enchanting ending. A suitable read for all. Highly memorable and recommended.

This is the first M/M trans romance I’ve read. I must say that I was drawn into this story because it was a trans romance that called to me. Colby and Chance’s story opened my eyes a bit. I truly love every part of this book especially the protective nature Colby has for his sister and the love he has for his parents. I also love the brotherhood he has with his roommates. I also, adore how Colby’s roommates bound with Chance. Although, Chance starts out being shy and reluctant at first his growth and dominance was superb. Most of all I love the communication between Colby and Chance. I am looking forward to the rest of this series.

This had so much potential! It is a trans MM romance and it's totally my favorite genre of contemporary adult romance, but this one is just too short to really give you any sort of character development. It kind of just throws you into the deep end and expects you to know all these people are except you don't.

Now our main character, Colby, is super extroverted and flirty and fun and he has a bad habit of sleeping with his sisters friends and roommates and so when his sister gets a new roommate, she makes him promise that he won't try and flirt with him. Except her new roommate is just too intriguing for Colby. Chance is quiet and introverted and super nerdy yet also very dominant when it comes to physical and sexual encounters. It was a great dichotomy for a character and I really loved him. I wish we had more of Colby and Chance's interactions before they jumped into sex. We kind of lose the part where they get to know each other because instead of actually allowing the reader to experience that, the author does a time jump where all of a sudden now they know each other better and are friends.

Don't get me wrong, I still really enjoy this one and I'll probably be the next one in the series. I was extra pleasantly surprised that the trans character was the dominant one in the sexual aspect of the relationship because a lot of the time and trans adult romance, the trans character is either shy or insecure or just generally submissive. There is nothing inherently better about either one of those traits, it is just more uncommon to have dominant trans characters and it was great.

(Advanced copy of Acoustics received from NetGalley in return for an honest review.)

Let me just start by saying… this book isn’t even officially out yet, and I already can’t wait for the rest of the series. I finished this book so quickly, I couldn't put it down!

Colby’s sister Hilary has a new roommate, and he’s specifically promised her that he would not make a move on him. But it’s not breaking the promise if Chance makes the first move…right?

Acoustics is less than 200 pages, but it's stuffed full of so much sweetness. Colby and Chance have an instant connection and their new relationship is sneaky, sexy, and fun. Chance is shy, nerdy, and sweet—and he’s surpassingly confident and dominant in bed, which was so enjoyable to read. Colby is outgoing, energetic, and incredibly considerate. He cares so much for Chance and puts thought and consideration into educating himself about transgender people so that he doesn’t make Chance uncomfortable. The connection and heat between them is passionate and undeniable, and the sex scenes are incredibly well written and very hot. They both really bring out the best in each other, and it’s impossible to not be fall in love with them and the way they love each other.
The entire story is short and sweet. All of the supporting characters are well written and the dialogue flows nicely. This book is flirty, fun, sexy, and has well written LGBTQ+ representation in the main and supporting characters. It’s a relatively low drama, high love, high heat book that I’d reread any day.

ACOUSTICS was the perfect combination of cute and sexy and it was a fantastic debut romance! Colby promised he wouldn't sleep with his sister's new roommate, but how is he supposed to resist the cute and nerdy Chance? With his shy personality and his nerdy talk of AI and robots, Chance captures Colby's eye and maybe even his heart.

I read ACOUSTICS in one sitting because I was enjoying it so much, the writing and story flowed really well and I was immediately sucked in. Chance and Colby were great together and I loved their banter and the friendship they formed outside of the relationship. I also really liked how confident Chance was in contrast to his quieter personality; he might be an introvert but that doesn't mean he doesn't know what he wants, especially when it comes to getting Colby in bed. These two were very steamy and I loved how they communicated their desires.

This was low-angst, joyful, and so much fun! I'm really looking forward to reading more by this author.

I was sent a copy of this book for review.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~.
Colby has messed around with his sister Hillary's roommates in the past resulting in her having to find a new place to live. She has expressly forbidden him from making a play for her current roommate Chance as he is perfect - sweet, tidy and caring. Colby promises to follow the rule until he meets Chance and is instantly attracted to him.
Chance is shy at first but when Colby starts asking him about his AI research, Chance shares his fun and nerdy self. He opens up about his experience of being Trans and the two develop a close friendship. But soon Colby is hanging out with Chance even when his sister isn't home. Colby introduces him to his friends and folds Chance into their group but the more time he spends with Chance the harder it becomes to resist him.
They flirt and goof around but after Chance has a bad day he asks Colby to distract him and they go from friends to friends with benefits. They have to sneak around behind Hillary's back but Colby begins to develop real feelings for Chance and starts to question whether it's fair to keep their relationship a secret.
When the truth is unexpectedly revealed the fallout leaves Colby's relationship with Hillary in jeopardy and his potential future with Chance in tatters as he loses his trust when he asks to just be friends. Can all three of them resolve their issues in time for Colby to realise that he needs to fight for his relationship with Chance or lose him forever?
🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟. I loved this story where a himbo meets a nerd and silliness ensues. It was an emotional rollercoaster and a sexy steamy romance in one. Colby narrates the story and his personality and snarky commentary had me in stitches on many occasions. I loved the development of the relationship between Chance and Colby from a once-off hook up to a sweet bond of love. I found the Trans aspects were dealt with very well and I learned new terminology which inspired me to look into those aspects more. Overall a hot and entertaining book that stole my heart. I look forward to reading more from this series.
Thank you for NetGalley for this ARC in exchange for an honest review.
A nice and quick read. There's not layers of trauma to wade through, it's just sweet and easy and the sex is fairly steamy too, which is always a plus. I'm also a sucker for a friends with benefits to lovers trope 👏.
The sex is great. There's a lot of discussion and negotiation while still keeping the momentum of being fun and hot. I really appreciated the instances where one gets caught up in the moment and the other remembers to pull back and respect previously set boundaries.
Some of the scenes are a little unrealistic and you have to suspend disbelief. The writing is also lacking in subtly for my liking in parts—conversations being a bit heavy handed, with declarations that feel a little out of place/forced—but this is a romance after all, and if we're going gooey and soft and verbose, then this is the place for it I suppose.
I think if this was longer, and more time was given to showing the developing connection pre-relationship, rather than us being told, this probably would have gone up a star. But, I'd definitely still recommend it as it is.
I really do seize the opportunity to pick up mm transgender romance novels that aren’t exploitative, and while “Acoustics” isn’t the best-written example of the genre I’ve read in the last couple of months, it definitely tries very hard to be as soft, sweet, and sexy as possible without exploitation of any kind, and that makes it endearing, no matter what.
I’ll fully admit the characters are distinct, well-drawn, and engaging. The issue is they are also written a little immature and overdramatic for their age without any explanation given for their behavior. Their reactions and behavior is sometimes erratic, as if the author hadn’t quite nailed their voices completely before calling the novel done.
I also thought the plot moved a little fast and everything was just a little too convenient at times. It became very predictable.
Overall, the book is charming, sweet, has soft boys, and gets steamy (though not as steamy as I prefer in my romance novels). We’ll see what Price has in mind for the rest of this series.
What a fun and enjoyable quick read! My first trans MM so I wasn’t exactly what to expect, but definitely not what I received. The connection between these two characters was off the charts, filled with so much passion and desire, had me anxiously waiting for the next page.
ᴍʏ ꜱᴡᴇᴇᴛ, ᴅᴏᴍɪɴᴀɴᴛ, ᴀɴxɪᴏᴜꜱ ʟᴏᴠᴇ. ᴍʏ ʀᴇꜱᴏɴᴀɴᴄᴇ. ᴍʏ ᴍᴀᴛᴄʜɪɴɢ ᴡᴀᴠᴇ.
Chance was so shy at the beginning, and a computer nerd, making his very own AI. He’s also a dominant in and out of the bedroom, which was completely unexpected being he used to be a she. But, he is still a strong, confident, and dependent character.
“ɪ ᴅᴏɴ’ᴛ ᴡᴀɴᴛ ʏᴏᴜ ᴛᴏ ʟᴀꜱᴛ, ɪ ᴡᴀɴᴛ ʏᴏᴜ ᴛᴏ ʙʀᴇᴀᴋ ꜰᴏʀ ᴍᴇ.”
Colby was such a confident flirt, as long as there weren’t any robots involved 😂. His research done on transgender people before his and Colby’s first experience was so sweet, and him not wanting Chance to be uncomfortable was a huge plus. He asks a lot of questions, contributing to Chance never feeling uncomfortable.
“ʙᴇꜱɪᴅᴇꜱ, ʏᴏᴜ'ʀᴇ ʜᴇʀᴇ ᴛᴏ ʜᴀᴠᴇ ᴅɪɴɴᴇʀ ᴡɪᴛʜ ᴍᴇ, ɴᴏᴛ ʜɪᴛ ᴏɴ ᴍʏ ʀᴏᴏᴍᴍᴀᴛᴇ.”
This entire storyline was so exciting, mixed with a lot of chemistry. Though I can say I was a little disappointed with the lack of intimacy, and the leading up without delivering, became somewhat problematic. Not saying smut is everything, but these two characters deserved more than one scene together and needed more time together because they were such an awesome couple! Either way, I’m excited for book two!
Ah this was a wonderful story. It was a short romantic story that will make you smile. Colby visits his sister regularly and she has a new roommate Chance, whose trans, and she doesn’t want them to date for her own reasons. Of course they do behind her back. Colby was a fantastic partner who asked questions, did his research, and made sure Chance was comfortable. I wish I knew more about Chance and why he decided to make a move on Colby since it seemed sudden to me. The ending was adorable! Overall, if you are looking for a cute and short M/M romance this is for you!
I received an ARC via NetGalley for my honest review.
I just gobbled this up - read it in one go, and I'm not a speed-reader! This is the first of a series and I already can't wait for the other books to be published. I'm already wondering who might be the MCs in future books because all of the secondary characters are so well developed I think any of them could have their own book. In fact, I get the sense that they already have! i.e. even though this is the first in the series, it feels like I've stepped into a well established world.
The sex is steamy. The romance is a little under played. It's a smidge "insta" - I could have with a bit more pre-amble and belly-aching by the MC. That bedroom slow-dance scene kinda came out of nowhere and didn't feel as believable as everything that happened before or afterwards.
But the dialogue was perfect - between all of the characters. Seriously, these people exist and I can't wait for the next instalment. And the opening scene, extolling the virtues of rain - beautiful writing. And now I need to visit Portland!
So sweet and adorable!
One of the most adorable books. I loved the consent and boundary setting discussions. I also loved how Colby is just gone for Chance. I did think the sister excuse was a bit weak, but I can understand how he was afraid and fear isn’t always rational. My only complaint is I wish it were longer! And that it ending at the 75% mark with a long preview for the second book. :( Which I’m going to read anyways.
Disclaimer : I received an ARC of this book my thoughts are my own
While this is unfortunately not a "NEW ALL TIME FAV" it is high up there and one of the most enjoyable reads I have had in a while.
This MM romance with a trans main character was cute and gave me a fuckbuddies to lovers which was mixed with "fuck this is my sister's roommate" which made for a fun and quick read.
Though do not be fooled by the cover this is STEAMY...
There was everything for a great time, communication and main characters that had palpable chemistry and balanced each other out. This romance while a bit predictable is cute and the writing style super easy to read through.
I loved both Chance and Colby and their romance together, in my opinion their romance progressed in a good pace and I felt like I knew them, they felt real.
I will totally read more books from this author in the future, a beautifully crafter romance novel, that leaves you wanting for more while still satisfied at the same time.
In the end while the predictability of certain "problems" they encountered was not too much of an hindrance to my enjoyment.
This is the first book in the Portland Symphony series.
It's a sweet low angst read. Colby is told by his sister to leave her roommate alone. Chance, the roommate has other ideas. It's not ideal to be sneaking behind Colby's sister's back and when push comes to shove Colby picks family. Colby and Chance do get their HEA but, its not with out a few bumps.
'Nobody sees themselves as they really are, I don't think.' / I stare at him. 'No, that's why people need friends.'
When Colby meets his sister's new roommate, the mutual attraction is all but instant. But Hillary knows her brother's track record, and makes him swear to keep Chance off-limits. Naturally, that doesn't last long ...
What I loved most about this novel was the relationship between Colby and Chance. Colby is basically a big himbo Labrador, while Chance is sweetly anxious and introverted, but also intensely dominant. I loved that mix - it was as much of a lovely surprise to me reading the novel as it was to the characters, and I thought the chemistry between the MCs was wonderful. I also have huge respect for the author for how they explored the intimate scenes between Colby and Chance. Not only were they written beautifully, but the delicate and respectful nods to Chance's experiences as a trans man were explored seamlessly.
Acoustics is surprisingly short, and I think it would have been even stronger if it had been longer. I think it would have been worth developing some of the other characters in more depth, such as Hillary, Evan, Leah, and Tony, for example, as well as to spend a bit more time with Colby and Chance at the beginning of their relationship. With that said, I am very much looking forward to reading more from this author.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for providing a free eARC of Acoustics. These opinions are my own.
this was delightful. the girl's brother and her trans roommate. she forbids her brother to get with him. and the rest is history. it was funny, steamy, a bit dramatic for no reason. but I enjoyed the resolution of the conflict even tho they were both being dumbasses.
But I figure nothing says "I forgive you" like a dick pick.
i will definitely continue in this series, i would have read more about these two so I hope we get to see them again in book 2
Thank you to Pride Book Tours & the author for providing me with a free copy in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own.
I don't really know what I was expecting with this book but I absolutely loved it; not really being a fan of romance, that's saying something...
Colby, the MC, is just your average queer (bi/pan) guy living his best life when his sister moves in with Chance, a trans gay guy, and he gets the "stay away from my roommate, my life depends on it" speech from his sister; like THAT has worked, ever.
As things happen between the two, Colby has to eventually face his lies or lose the person he loves.
I appreciate books like this more than the good story it is; it also expands my own knowledge and keeps me relevant. Also, did I mention that this is an #OwnVoice novel?
You're going to love this book if you like:
- Bi/Pan Main Character,
- Trans man love interest,
- Strangers to friends with benefits to lovers,
- Steamy MM sex scenes,
- Highly relateable characters,
- Happy Ever After,
- Single POV.
This book is a nice way to while away a couple hours because you'll just want to keep reading. Go get yourself a copy now.
Respectfully Lovely
For an erotica romance this is a sweet tale . For starters and what I love the most is that it is so respectful for the trans indivusal. It dosen't make it seem like an impersonating male. Or the thing to conquere. It is giving chance to say his own wants about his needs sexual and it's not questioned. Its discussed in a jeavthy way between Colby and Chance not just only good for any relationship but great for a relationship that has an extra step to navigate.
The story it self is sweet. Obviously an instant grabber of connection plus the longing of oh no! We can't be together! Yeah its one of those tale and it was still nice. Pacing was good and a different twist on how roles worked, for which I won't spoil here.
All and all I liked it.
