Shadrac Cain, or simply Shad to his few close friends, but most just call him Cain, is a mountain man, a loner, and someone whose good side you want to stay on. He strictly adheres to nine of the Ten Commandments, but there are those who just need killing. Cain finds a home in the San Juan Mountains of Colorado, but he also finds the region is infested with a band of white renegades, who are as cruel and ruthless as any in the annals of history. When Cain stands between a powerful war lord and his victims, it becomes an all out fight to the finish. Cain first appeared in "Ace High" and was instrumental in helping Ben Blue get his herd through to the railhead. It is the 5 th in the Ben Blue series.
Lou Bradshaw is a lifelong story teller, who spent most of his life as a commercial illustrator and graphic artist. Deadlines, clients, and vendors were all sources of sleep depriving stress. To combat insomnia, he would often create stories in his mind to take the place of what was bothering him. Soon, some of those stories had grown to the point that they needed to be put on paper. Taking up a felt tip pen and a loose leaf binder, he found something new, challenging, and exciting. He soon filled multiple binders and his distraction had become a passion. Upon retirement, he began assembling notes and scribbles into novels… the rest is history. One of the unique features of his work is that as a dyslexic child, he was considered either slow or lazy by most of his teachers. To date he has written 7 books, which is 6 more than he was able to read while in school. His only legitimate book report, although 3 months late, was Huckleberry Finn. Lou and his wife Avon live in the Missouri Ozarks, where they enjoy their family, golf, and the great outdoors.
I don't usually like first person writing but I did enjoy this one. Cain was a character that knew he was at the end of an era but was more then willing to try a New way of living. But before he could do so he needed to rid the area of some ruthless men
An LB Western About Shadrack Cain/Mountain Man/Protector
LB has penned a western novel about a friend of Ben Blue named Shadrack Cain, but called Cain. A late bloomer of a mountain man he came to be one of them as the days of the Mountain Man was fading into the past. He built a homestead in the mountains and brought 25 sheep to raise for the wool. Then he became an enemy of the toughest outlaw gang in Arizona and New Mexico Territories. This is an excellent read for the genre.....DEHS
There aren't enough adjectives to describe Lou Bradshaw's way with words and his talent for spreading a yarn. Cain, is a must read for all of you western fans. I almost hate to start one of Bradshaw's books because I know there will be an ending. This read is for sure a"can't putter downer" so, "giddy up."
I was an avid reader of western books some 30 years ago with a hard back collection of Louis L Amour. Probably 30or so. After reading everything he wrote I was spoiled so would read on occasion another author just couldn't get enthused. I have enjoyed the 5 I have read and look forward to reading the rest.
This book was more about war and enough about western life. It kept me interested but I would rather get a glimpse of day to day life.. wicked men cause a lot of hardship for a lot of people.
I started reading this series about a week ago. I'm having a tough time putting them down. Bradshaw's style grabs you and holds you. I'm looking forward to the rest of the series.
Cain is a friend of Ben Blue and a mountain man. He wants to settle down with on little piece of heaven. He helps a lady who was terrorized by a gang of bad men. Cain decided to take care of the gang.
Interesting story of Caine, the Mountainman. The story his he survived the cruel world of bad men and firefighters and rescuing women who were captives.
Cain is mountain man who was introduced in the previous book. Cain is a loner and set up a camp high in the San Juan mountains. He thought about raising sheep but found that his site is not sufficient and that sheep need more attention than he is able to give them. In his rugged mountain home he encounters an evil gang of outlaws and pursues them. There is violence, struggles with rugged terrain and evil villains. Through Cain's narration we come to know and respect this rugged individual who is more at home living alone with a dog for a companion.
This is variation from the Ben Blue stories. We get to know Cain through his own narration and come to respect him for his courage and endurance.
Great action, good characters. Add the side story of the carvings and you have a good read. The idea that Cain may be getting a wife he isn't expecting is funny.
Always enjoy the terminology that the author uses to explain the territory and the characters. Cain is one of most interesting characters and you hate to lay it down.
Just when I think there isn't a possibility of a more amazing character than the ones he has already given us Mr. Bradshaw shows me I was mistaken. I hope Cain shows up again.
Great storytelling, plenty of action, great descriptive writing, and satisfactory ending. Ben Blue only makes cameo appearances in this book. The dog has a name change from Pico to Rico, confusing. Good read.
