A Bossy Roommate

Rate this book
I never thought I’d see her again—the woman I left behind at the motel after our one-night stand.

Picture my surprise when she strolls into the office as my new assistant.

But wait, there’s more.

I come home to find her with suitcases, nowhere to stay.

I could decline to have her move in, yet I see a chance.

My nosy aunt’s visiting, expecting to meet my non-existent spouse.

My assistant’s onboard with the madness of playing my newlywed wife.

So, here are the ground rules for our little

1. Our fake marriage is top-secret intel at the workplace. No slips of the tongue (hee-hee) or accidental leaks. We’re in this purely for show.

2. This is strictly a “no-love zone.” I don’t care if Cupid himself tries to shoot me with his arrow.

3. We gotta sell it like we’re head over heels in love. That means sharing a bed and putting on a stellar performance.

Little do I know what I’m signing up for.

Not only do I find myself trying to stop a fire she started (lesson keep shorts handy at all times), but I’m also testing her “World’s Best Kisser” claim (let’s just say the results are…unexpected) and discovering a newfound appreciation for cramped spaces—and running washing machines.

But then, suddenly, she’s gone.

Now I find myself stuck in a mental loop of “what-if?” scenarios.

Did I just let the world’s most remarkable woman slip through my fingers?

From USA Today Bestselling Author Jolie Day comes A Bossy Roommate. Get ready for a weekend full of midnight shenanigans and one (rather cozy) bed. Hearts and strawberries collide in berrylicious moments! It is a complete standalone romance with a Happily Ever After. Definitely for adult listeners only.

A Bossy Roommate by Jolie Day

4.5/5 stars

A Bossy Roommate is a funny, delicious and hot fake marriage story.
Eden just got left at the altar and to top things off her ex-fiance stole all of her money from their joint account. She moves to NYC to start a new life. Through friends she can stay in an apartment for free for 6 months. She also has a new job lined up.

At the start she just arrived and spends the night in a cheap hotel. She goes out and ends up talking to Carter Donovan and they spend the night together. Sparks fly but he didn't kiss her even once. When she wakes up, she sees she is alone. And is a little disappointed by that. She didn't expect to have breakfast with him but a goodbye would have been nice.

She puts it all aside and is off to her new job. Gretchen will teach her the ropes and the ladies instantly connect. Eden will work for Mr.  Bancroft. And she is super excited. Until he walks into the office. Mr. Bancroft is no other than Carter Donovan. Donovan being his middle name. They instantly decide that they will forget about that night and keep things strictly professional.

But things get even more complicated when she goes to the new apartment. Hattie, the lady that lives there, is still in the apartment for a few weeks. She invites her to stay with her. But dear old Hattie has three stunning cats that Eden is allergic to. Low and behold the elevator arrives and Carter is stepping out to go to his own apartment. And goodness gracious Hattie is literally one of the best characters in this book. She uses her old lady charm and kinda pushes Carter to give Eden a place in his house for a few weeks. And nobody is stronger than Hattie's charm, so he agrees and Eden moves in with him.

Carter gets a call from his aunt Eleanor and she lets him know she is gonna visit him for the weekend. Auntie is his only living relative and he told her he recently got married to get her off his back. Auntie Eleanor is just as charming and strong willed as Hattie. And now that she is coming he is in trouble. He asks Eden to be his fake wife for the weekend. And that is what kick starts this delicious story.

Things get complicated quickly. But they also get a lot easier. And that is what I love about this book. I love the dance that Eden and Carter dance. They intricately connect and have each other's back. They work flawlessly together and they love fooling his Auntie.

Hattie and Eleanor really steal every single scene they are in. They are meddling, funny, way too honest, kind and super supportive. Those two galls have a mind and ideas of their own and they are not backing down to get what they want.

The story also focuses on their work life. And how passionate they are about their jobs and the goals they want to accomplish.
Carter's friendship with Bradley was also a joy to read.

But my most favorite thing about this entire book is the insane chemistry Eden and Carter have. There is a 'only the t*p' scene and goodness gracious I nearly blushed when I read it. And I adore how creative they get with cupcakes. Their passion and how it evolves and grows was the heart of the story. And I love that the book ended with a few snippets into the future.

I really enjoyed this beauty and I am so happy I discovered Jolie Day's books! If you want to read a quick, funny, hot, heartwarming and amazing story then definitely pick this beauty up!

4.5 huge stars from me for The Bossy Roommate!

Was this book realistic? Absolutely not. Did I care? Also no! 😂 A Bossy Roommate was such a fun, fast-paced read that kept me hooked from start to finish. It had just the right mix of spice, humor, and chaos to make it a thoroughly entertaining escape.

The banter was on point and the chemistry was. Sometimes you just need a light, spicy read that doesn’t take itself too seriously, and this book delivered exactly that.

If you’re in the mood for something fast, funny, and steamy, give this one a try. I really enjoyed it, and you should definitely be checking out more from Jolie Day!

🎧🎧AUDIO REVIEW🎧🎧

#FunFact: It took me three days to finish this audiobook because I loved it so much that I rationed out my listening time so the story would be with me for longer! Also, once again, every single person who did not tell me about Jolie Day before now, is #blocked!

This was an absolute #funfest, #swoonfest, #heartfest, just all the #fests!! I have to say that Jason Clarke & Vanessa Edwin put on ne heck of a performance as Carter & Eden. I know that if I’d read this story, I would have felt the same about of love I do right now for this story but these two performed it at a level that sparked! They brought to life the story like a burst of stars! It was magnificent!

The story moves thru all the phases that two strangers should go thru to become ”more” in a very entertaining way. Everything from the “meet” to the “after-meet” to the “after-after meet” was just so entertaining and even though it seems like it should all come across as preposterous and only something that would “happen in the movies”, it does not! It felt organic to me and honestly, swoony as well! And it only got progressively more entertaining and swoony as the story developed!

Incredibly entertaining story performed perfectly! One of the best audio experiences I’ve had in a while all around!

We all knew she was going to stay longer than 6 months, so the number of times she emphasized that she was only staying for 6 months was overkill.
Overall, the book was cute in the rom-com type of way with the perfect amount of smut.

“Carter makes me come alive in ways I didn’t think were possible.” —Eden Ryan

“Eden has weaved her way into my life and into my heart without me realizing it.” —Carter Bancroft

4.25🌟

giggling greening laughing wheezing swooning throwing up

This was an absolute blast—a quick, engaging read that had me glued from beginning to end. It struck the perfect balance of heat, humor, and a little chaos, making it such an entertaining escape. I had a great time flipping through the pages while also soaking it in via audio (major kudos to the narrators—they nailed it). This was my first experience with Jolie Day’s work, but definitely not the last.

This story took the classic strangers-to-lovers journey and made it feel effortlessly charming. From the first meet to all the chaotic “after” moments, everything unfolded with humor, heart, and just the right touch of swoon. It had that movie-magic vibe without ever feeling forced. Carter and Eden’s dynamic kept me completely hooked—fun, flirty, and full of heart. Eden radiated positivity in a way that felt genuinely refreshing, and her dedication made her such a standout sunshine heroine. Carter, with all his particular quirks, had a great growth arc that I really appreciated by the end. Their banter was snappy, the chemistry spot-on, and their evolving connection brought all the feels. This was the perfect kind of light, spicy read that doesn’t overthink itself—and that epilogue glimpse into their future? Chef’s kiss. 💋

As I said before, Jason Clarke and Vanessa Edwin truly brought this story to life—I’ve been hoping to hear them narrate together for ages, and they absolutely delivered. Even without duet-style narration, their voices paired beautifully, and the way they embodied the characters felt so natural and spot-on. Such a stellar combo that made the audiobook experience extra special 🤧💓

This novel is part of the series called Faking It in NYC, and while the author doesn't specify which book we should read first or in what order, it's likely I'll read The CEO Enemy immediately after this! 💥🏃🏻‍♀️

One of my favorite tropes- One night stand. Marriage of convenience, funny, steamy off the charts chemistry with Cinderella-type vibes
My favorite type of hero- Bossy alpha billionaire with no time for love or relationships.
My favorite type of heroine, sunshiny, fun-loving, spirited, but takes no trash from the hero.
Carter and Eden met at a coffee ice/cream shop. They ended up spending the night together, and he sneaked out in the morning before Eden awakened, thinking he'd never see her again. To both of their surprise, she was his new administrative assistant.
They were opposites that just happened to fit together perfectly. She made him more fun-loving and less uptight, and he made her more serious. They positively affected each other throughout the story.
The secondary characters were hilarious. Carter's Aunt Ellenor is the only living relative, whom they constantly referred to as the old, elderly, frail lady, who was 66 years old. This was the only part that I took issue with. 66 is not old and elderly. But I guess they had to phase it that way because her only wish before she dies is to see her nephew married with children.

Oh come on…

This was painfully bad. So bland, like every other romance that’s over the top cheesy. I don’t know why I keep doing this. I like it light and the blurb sounded light and good, but this was just. Yuck.

And also the aunt is 66 years old and they repeatedly call her ELDERLY!? Come on……

I listened to this on audio and I didn’t like the male narrator. He spoke so deep all the time and it sounded fake and kind of tickled my ears (not in a good way 😂). And he sounded like he was 50+ years old (also not good since the MMC is much younger than that). And also - the aunt was American! Sure, she’s lived in France for many years but the male narrator had her speak with a french accent all the time 😂 I mean, it wouldn’t be weird if she threw in some French words here and there, but speaking English with an ACCENT is weird even for someone who’s lived abroad for many years..

I was seriously hesitant to even log this book because I’m kind of embarrassed 😂

I had an extremely fun time listening to this book (applause to the excellent audiobook narrators). This is my first book from Jolie Day, but definitely not my last. I initially picked up this book because I enjoyed the summary along with wanting to read something fun and lighthearted. When I first began reading, there was an extra trope I wasn’t expecting. I was going to DNF since that additional dynamic made me less enthusiastic to continue reading. This has nothing to do with the author, it’s just that when I read the summary, I had a specific scenario in mind so I was a bit let down it didn’t play out the way I wanted it to. Nevertheless, I kept going and don’t regret it.

I was thoroughly entertained by Carter and Eden’s relationship. I really like how Eden is such a strong, positive, and hardworking character. Her vibrancy and professionalism to her job is so endearing. She is the epitome of sunshine which was very refreshing. I encountered female sunshine characters before, but something about Eden made her stand out. Carter is no doubt a man who has a particularly way of doing things ;P so it was interesting to see his character grow throughout. At the end, I admire Carter for his choices and a few life changes he decided to make, I thought that was pretty cool.

As I mentioned previously in my other reviews, I am normally not a fan of side characters. However, I found myself enjoying the side characters here a lot and loving their scenes as much as the main couple.

The books I read before usually brushes past what their day to day office work looks like, so I was completely blown away with this book’s detailed descriptions of it. I was very impressed, and very invested in the company politics. The twist in the end was so juicy-I love it! Also, the fact that there was no miscommunication and how the misunderstandings were resolved with so much maturity was awesome! I cannot emphasize enough how it is so nice to see adults handle situations in an adult manner.

On a side note, due to my personal preferences, I would have found the story more enjoyable if the spice scenes were replaced with more cute, fluffy romance. But as the book clearly indicates it will include said content, my rating is not affected by this at all.

Overall, this was a lovely read! I didn’t expect to find another 5/5 in 2024 so I am pleasantly surprised. Thank you to Jolie Day, Vanessa Edwin, Jason Clarke! You really made my day [pun intended] extra special!

Super tropey and cheesy. There’s no real angst or drama and little conflict.

The smut didn’t work for me either. I don’t particularly like when the H and h are in a fake relationship but then everything is all “my pussy is yours”……ummm temporarily. Makes the scenes feel fake and like the characters are just playing porn star.

Overall: 2.5

What to Expect:
- Billionaire Romance
- Grumpy/Sunshine
- Boss/Employee
- Workplace Romance
- Fake Marriage
- One Night Stand
- Forced Proximity
- One Bed
- Melding Aunt & Neighbor

Eden moves to New York for a fresh start after things don't work out with her fiancé. On her very first night, she has a one-night stand. Eden soon discovers that Carter, the guy from the night before, is her new boss and next-door neighbor. When Eden's housing situation falls through, he offers her a place to stay. When Carter gives his aunt the impression that he and Eden are married, things get complicated. With his aunt planning to visit, Carter convinces Eden to pretend to be his wife. As Eden and Carter spend more time together, their fake marriage becomes something very real.

I loved Eden and Carter together. They have undeniable chemistry, and I enjoyed the development of their relationship. Carter is the grumpy, closed-off, workaholic billionaire, and Eden is all sunshine. While navigating their fake marriage, maintaining their secret at work, and keeping some hilarious meddling at bay, Eden and Carter’s journey from roommates to lovers is full of swoony moments, sizzling heat, fun banter, and lots of laughs.

Narration:
Vanessa Edwin and Jason Clarke perform this story using dual-style narration. Vanessa perfectly captures Eden's sweet, sassy, vulnerable, and playful nature. Jason is the perfect grumpy boss, and it’s hard to imagine anyone else as the voice for Carter. I loved their portrayal of the side characters and the different accents used. Vanessa and Jason are amazing storytellers with incredible range. They bring humor, banter, and chemistry. This amazing narrator duo truly enhanced my listening experience.

🎧❤️Audiobook Review
Jason was the perfect grumpy bosshole, and honestly, I don’t think anyone could have portrayed him better. He was cast to perfection, bringing every nuance of his character to life with such intensity and wit. And then there's Vanessa, who absolutely nailed the role of Eden. She channeled every bit of sass and playful charm, making Eden a vibrant force that balanced Jason’s grumpiness in the most delightful way.

Together, they made this story an absolute joy to listen to. Their chemistry, banter, and the way they played off each other added layers of humor and heart, making it an immersive and thoroughly entertaining experience.

DEVOURED this one all in one go today!! It was so frikkin good!! I was laughing so much, but also swooning for these two!!

The audio was *chefs kiss*! Vanessa Edwin as Eden & Jason Clarke as Carter was a recipe for a good time, as I’ve never listened to an audio from them that wasn’t fantastic! They did an amazing job bringing these characters & all their spiciness & humor to life!

Carter was such a grumpy broody bosshole (my new favorite term 😂), but his dry sense of humor kept me cracking up I swear! Loved how he loved his aunt, & how he fell for Eden was such a fun journey! He’s soft for no one but her,,,well & the aunt lol. Also, THE MOUTH ON THIS MAN SHOULD BE ILLEGAL! PHEW!

Eden was such a firecracker!!! She was so flippin’ FUNNY & so relatable! I loved that she treated herself to cupcakes/treats whenever she found a reason to celebrate, because same sis, same! Also, she was not ashamed of him spending money on her!! When he bought the ring, her internal monologue was GOLDEN! Let that man spoil you, YES PLEASE👏👏

I just absolutely loved these two & their story, such a heartwarming, fun, fluffy read & listen that I was giggling & kicking my feet through!

Well this was a delight!! Just the listen I needed after a bit of a book series hangover.

It’s no secret if you have seen my reviews, I’m a sucker for a grumpy/sunshine trope, add in a moody billionaire boss and …. BE STILL MY BEATING HEART!!

Carter, oh you beautiful moody man, of course all you needed was Eden to soften that outer shell.
And Eden, so open and trusting after being hurt before, she’s such a sweetheart.
But I can’t not mention the gorgeous side character action of Aunt Eleanor and neighbour Hattie, those two are double trouble and I absolutely loved the narration of Aunt Eleanor with her French flair!

I absolute loved this and ATE IT UP!! The narration was perfection and it’s jam packed with all my favourite tropes.

If you are a fan of a rom com, definitely give this one a go.

That was so stinking cute! I think I loved everything about it, except now I hate that it’s over already. Eden and Carter were the textbook definition of “grumpy” and “sunshine”. They were such polar opposites to one another I’m a little surprised by how well they worked together. But maybe I shouldn’t have been considering how steamy their meet-cute turned out. I had so much fun watching these two navigate their fake romance, the pitfalls of intra-office ‘dating’, and solving the mysteries the author handed them. But I think, above all that, I adored the scheming aunties the most. Now I think I need to go back and read it over again, because I’m nowhere near ready to let go of these characters.

After Carter and Eden have a one night stand, he didn't think he would see her again. Until she comes into his office as his new assistant. But, there's more. When he finds her at home with all her suitcases and no place to stay. Carter offers her to stay with him, which would help him with his meddling aunt, who wants to meet his new spouse. So begins a fake marriage that entails a "no love zone" and it has to be a secret at work too.

I loved this book so much!! Most recently I listened to the audiobook and it was fantastic! Performed in dual narration by Vanessa Edwin and Jason Clarke. You can't go wrong with these two! Jason was amazing as Carter. He captured Carter's easy charm and he had an amazing French accent. Vanessa as always was fantastic as Eden. She has such a wide range in voices. Loved her accent work and her portrayal of Eden was so good. She captured Eden's sunny disposition and optimistic, realistic outlook on life. Together Vanessa and Jason brought all the laughs, cute rom com vibes and flirtatious banter. I highly recommend the audiobook!!

Thank you Forever and Always PR for the #gifted audio to read and review.

Holy…. Wow. The dryer scene is going to stay in my brain for quite some time 😮‍💨😮‍💨

Expect —> ONS, Grumpy/Sunshine, Roommates, Forced Proximity, Office, Fake Relationship, Only One Bed

Carter is focused, driven and not looking for anything more than a hookup. Until that hookup turns out to be his new assistant and neighbor…. And then roommate 👀 AND then he needs a fake wife to show his dying aunt that he cares about something other than work 😅 did I mention that she was also his hottest hookup and understands him in ways no one ever has?

These two are fire. I enjoyed this book so much. And it was way hotter than the cover let on 😮‍💨.

This was a very enjoyable book. I was caught up in Eden and Carter’s story from the very beginning. I thought the character development was very nicely done; I loved seeing Carter’s growth over the course of the story. I will admit the coincidences and mix-ups to set up the story were a little implausible in real life, but billionaire romances are meant to be an escape from real life, right? I thought this story had just the right mix of laughs, emotion, a bit of suspense and not too much angst. A nice enjoyable, light read.

Jolie never misses for me and Carter and Eden are no exception. These two are so fun - and they are perfection on audio. Vanessa Edwin & Jason Clarke are so great at bringing these two to life and their voices complement each other so well. Eden & Carter begin at the night of their one night stand and the next morning they realize he is her new boss. Eden is in NYC to get away from her failed wedding and to start over, so you are rooting for her from the beginning. She and Carter agree to act like the night never happened to keep office gossip down. But when they realize that she is also his new neighbor, the universe keeps putting them together and a roommate, fake engagement ensues. Their journey to a happily ever after is one I will revisit over and over.

So Much More Than I Expected!

The audiobook A Bossy Roommate by Jolie Day, narrated by Vanessa Edwin and Jason Clarke, was far more than I anticipated from a rom-com. What starts as a Grumpy Sunshine one-night stand quickly shifts into a Boss Roommate situation, and the story just keeps evolving. It packs in so many beloved tropes: fake marriage, close proximity, one bed, workplace romance, and even a he-falls-first twist. Best of all, there’s a real story here, filled with home and workplace drama. And the cherry on top? Or should I say the strawberry on top? Is Vanessa and Jason’s performance as an over-the-top older French lady—pure, priceless perfection!
