Lady of marriageable age with two young boys, in need of husband.
I am a good cook and hard worker.
Victoria Eastman grew up in a Texas saloon—an experience that made her tough, resourceful, and determined to forge a new life. So she places an ad in a gentleman's newspaper... and soon finds herself a suitable arrangement on a farm in Promise, Wyoming. Only problem is that her would-be husband turns up dead the day she arrives.
Rancher Colt McBride is known for his true grit and business smarts. Yet when it comes to his new neighbor, Victoria, he's stumped: Who is she, really? She's lovely to look at, of course, and has proven herself a gentle soul. She's even causing him to question his staunch bachelorhood. But any kind of future may be shattered when a stranger reveals a secret about Victoria's past—one that could destroy them both. Unless, together, they can take a leap of faith—right into each other's arms...
Rated 3.5 - A historical western mail-order bride novel with a surprise twist creates expectations for the rest of the series. Western historical fans will rejoice in a new series to follow, especially since the third book will release April 2016.

Victoria Eastman places an ad in the newspaper for a husband, hoping for a positive future for herself and her boys. She accepts an offer to meet the only man who didn’t mention her wifely duties out of the several who answered her ad. All her hopes and dreams for the future are scattered when she arrives in Wyoming Territory to learn that her possible future husband has died.
Colt McBride runs his family’s ranch with some hired hands after his brothers left to find their future when their father died. Colt’s fast draw with a gun has kept him safe so far in a territory that requires protection from others wanting what’s yours. When his best friend turns up dead, Colt blames the one man who is making all their lives a living hell.
Euan Wallace, a rich rancher determined to buy up all the land around him, or use his hired guns to help him acquire it, manages to stay just one step ahead of the law. Especially when he has the sheriff on his payroll and kills the judge.
When Victoria finds out that her now deceased mail-order husband has willed her his farm, she decides to stay on in Wyoming Territory and send for her boys. Colt feels responsible for his best friend’s betrothed and tries to protect her, while maintaining an emotional distance. A sworn bachelor, Colt is attracted to Victoria but not in the least bit interested in obtaining a wife. That is until Euan decides to court Victoria and sway her opinion toward his innocence, hoping to obtain her farm. Will Colt stand by and let Victoria marry Euan before he proves his guilt in his best friend’s death?
A creative story, PROMISES KEPT includes a mail-order husband, ranchers struggling to keep their animals fed and watered, farmers hoping to retain their land, soiled doves causing trouble, a saloon overflowing with whiskey, gambling and gun fights – not always in that order, cattle rustling plus gunslingers on both sides determined to prove their prowess.
I’m particularly fond of mail-order bride stories and westerns so I especially enjoyed the several twists in this one. In addition to the future husband winding up dead, Victoria is running from something but we’re not sure what. There’s also the mystery of the twin boys she’s protecting, as well as the past that haunts her.
I enjoyed this story but there were a few things that felt awkward. There seemed to be too many characters playing the same type of roles when they could have been combined to make the story less confusing, such as two soiled doves causing the same trouble or two gunslingers as villains. Also, I didn’t realize this book was inspirational until toward the end. Without any warning, the faith message came into play and it felt out of place. I enjoy inspirational stories with a faith message but there’s usually some hint earlier in the novel that it’s heading in that direction. The violent nature of the God-fearing hero didn’t always make sense. How can he attend Sunday services, read the Bible and think about killing people consistently and still be a viable believer? I get it that it’s the West in a really rough time and everyone has to defend themselves, but Colt seemed a little blood thirsty and out for revenge for someone trying to convince Victoria to reconnect with her faith. Had he been struggling with his faith and it was Victoria doing the convincing, it would have been less of a red flag.
There was good adventure in this story and some endearing characters. Victoria’s boys are cute and they soften Colt’s rough nature. The dog was a good addition but there was a situation with him that made me wonder about its inclusion. Victoria is a brave woman, restarting her life in a rough territory, especially with the boys and as a single source of income for their survival. I liked her choice of friends and ability to stand up for herself when necessary. Even though Victoria was stereotypically gorgeous in a territory full of men, her good heart and innocence was charming. I liked that her cooking was a big attraction as well and that the book didn’t rely on just her beauty for all the men tripping all over themselves around her.
Although I’m looking forward to more books in this series, I felt that PROMISES KEPT seemed rushed at the end. Adding more characters toward the end makes sense for the next book but I would have preferred to get to know them a bit more at the beginning. It just seemed rushed and overly convenient as a set-up by adding them at the end, making the flow a bit choppy and not as natural as I expected from the majority of the book. The last few chapters took away from the main characters’ romance, so maybe the book should have been a bit longer to compensate for the new introductions.
Even though I found some inconsistencies, they were never enough to stop me from reading. The flavor of the west pulls the story forward with promise of resolution. A good beginning to a western historical series with potential, PROMISES KEPT sets the stage for book two, FINDING PROMISE. Look for LAST PROMISE due to release April 26, 2016. Western inspirational fans will enjoy Scarlett Dunn’s creative style.
This is a new to me author,so I wasnt sure what to expect, but I was pleasantly surprised. I enjoyed the characters immensely and loved the storyline.
I loved the inner strength of Victoria Eastmen and her determination to protect two little boys in her care. I admired Colt McBride for his determination, too.
This is a fast paced book that held my interest from the first page to the very last page. It has a several characters that are as entertaining as the two main characters.
It's a story of letting go of past hurts, learning to trust and opening your heart.
I recieved a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
I won a copy of this book as part of a giveaway on Goodreads in exchange for my honest opinion.
This will be short review.
Fans of romance will enjoy this story. Fans of something a little different may not. What this story delivered was a solid romance albeit rather predictable. While this is not necessarily a bad thing sometimes you just want the story to stray from the usual formulas.
Scarlett Dunn’s Promises Kept, the first book in her McBride Brothers series, certainly offers a promising Wild West romance. Packed with action and adventure in addition to the undeniable attraction and romance, Dunn’s novel would not let me stop reading. Victoria Eastman travels across the country for a husband, as well as a stable home, but nothing seems to turn out as expected. With danger seeming to lurk at every turn, her prospects for home and family are complicated - especially with the handsome cowboy Colt McBride for a neighbor. Victoria plays an excellent female lead, strong and determined to provide for her boys even in the face of her many challenges, while Colt makes for a splendid male lead with his protective nature, kind heart and obvious strength. (And of course, surrounding these two is a colorful cast of likable and dislikable characters that always manage to keep the storyline interesting.) An entirely enjoyable read, Promises Kept would be a great choice for any interested reader of historical romance.
Thanks to Pump Up Your Book, I received a copy of Promises Kept and the opportunity to provide an honest review. I was not required to write a positive review, and all the opinions I have expressed are my own.
1) Why is a man still considered a "good Christian" if he has sex with prostitutes when the prostitutes themselves are shunned from "good Christian" society because of their occupation?
2) Why is being a "red-blooded man" who "has needs" considered a sufficient reason for his lack of self control for men while women are blamed for both their actions and his?
3) Why is it okay for a man to undress a woman with his eyes but wrong for a woman to stare at a man with non-sexual curiosity?
4) Why do men think that they have the right to expect their future wives to be virgins who are as pure as the driven snow when they themselves frequent brothels?
5) Why are all of the female prostitutes villainized by being depicted as malicious, violent, jealous, and dishonest while the men who are their customers are depicted as considerate, protective, generous, and truthful?
Even for mainstream romance, this book was really sexist. For Christian romance? The so-called hero of this story does not have any Christian values. He drinks, gambles, and is a regular customer of one of the prostitutes at the local saloon and has no plans to marry her or any of the other women he has been sexually involved with.
I would not recommend this author for anyone who is looking for Inspirational/Christian romance and I do not plan to read any of her other books.
I don't generally read books in this genre, but Promises Kept was a very pleasant surprise!
The main character, Victoria Eastman, is on the run from a shameful past and desperate to make a new life for herself and two orphaned boys, but at every turn she's in danger of having her secrets revealed. As the book progresses, she learns she must put aside her prejudices in order to find not only love but the forgiveness she so desperately needs.
The author kept the pace lively with lots of twists and turns that ratcheted up the tension. I found it harder and harder to put the book down as I read. Good job, Ms. Dunn! You've got yourself a new fan.
Victoria is a very likable heroine. I thought she was well written. Most of the characters were extremely well written and I could see them all so clearly as I was reading. The attraction between Victoria and Colt was great and I enjoyed their love story. Romance is what I look forward to the most in book and I wasn't disappointed.
What I Liked...
You can't have a cowboy in a book and not expect some showdown action...
Scarlett Dunn writes great books; her plots keep the reader guessing. There's lots going on in this drama, including rustling, land grabs, suspense, and lots of great dialogue. Victoria Eastman is a strong woman with two small boys. She has done the nearly impossible, taking care of them in a place and time that offered few options to women (without men).
Victoria accepts a mail-order marriage and arrives (without the boys) to check things out. She arrives to find that her fiancee has died of a heart attack out on the range. She gets ready to return to St. Louis, and the job she had there, when she finds that she is the owner of the farm of her intended.
Colt McBride is the type of man any woman would want, handsome and successful. However, Colt isn't the marrying kind and works hard at keeping his ranch together, in spite of rustlers and various problems that arrive with a new landowner, who keeps buying up the town.
I had two problems with this novel, small though they might be. First, I wish that every hero and heroine (of Ms. Dunn) wasn't singularly beautiful and handsome. It isn't realistic or necessary. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder and there were so few women available, that any and justa about all could have husbands, if they wished.
Second, Colt getting up out of bed (after a bullet removal near his spine) for a funeral, and then riding a horse to confront some bad guys seemed impossible and unrealistic. Otherwise, I loved this story. It is the first of three about the McBride brothers.
McBride Brothers Series ** 1. Promises Kept (2015) 2. Finding Promise (2015) 3. Last Promise (2016)
Full of foul immoral values. The main male character sees no problem with filling his"needs" with harlots at the saloon. He claims to have faith, prays, goes to church, and is described as a good man of character, even while seeing no problem with his continuing sexual immorality. The main female character is repeatedly alone in his room, on his bed with him, even letting him partially undress her and nearly sleeps with him before their wedding. He pulls back last minute, but multiple times he suggests that sort of behaviour, proving his lack of respect and that he has no true wish to protect her from his own immoral desires. As the daughter of a harlot she grew up in a saloon, and dislikes cowboys after one tried to rape her. She also dislikes their two-faced behavior of sleeping with prostitutes while going to church and hearing the preacher tell them sex before marriage is a sin. He is involved in exactly that kind of behaviour, and nearly takes the same advantage of her, but somehow she is supposed to see him as a good man and fall for him - disgusting! Even if he didn't claim to be a believer he is exactly the kind of man she would despise.
Scarlett Dunn kept the events wanting you to read more until you realize you have read the entire book before you know it.
What does man do when he wants what someone else has, watches loved ones killed, and sees everything he has worked for being lost...HE FIGHTS FOR WHAT HE WANTS!
What does a woman do that loves her boys, has nothing and wants to have a home...She does what she has to, to get what she wants and needs in her life.
This story for a historical romance has it all...the cowboys, the beautiful woman, the villian, and lots of action.
This was my first Scarlett Dunn book, but it won't be my last. It was a easy to read, well written, interesting story about the west and a mail order bride. Lots of likeable characters in this book. And a hint of religion. I really enjoyed the historical/romance clean story. I could hardly stop reading it. Loved the ending, can't wait to read the rest of the series. I won my book from Goodreads Giveaways. FYI the story may make you hungry.
Victoria was the daughter of saloon lady, Ruby, but Victoria wanted nothing to do with that life and left with twin boys by another saloon girl. Now she's inherited a ranch because she answered a mail order from Chet who died as Victoria arrived. Colt, a neighbor rancher, helped her and finally their love resulted in marriage
This was my first time reading Scarlett Dunn and I was not disappointed. A good start to her The McBride Brothers series. An even better mail-order bride story that has it’s own twist.
Very sweet story. No racey scenes though. I said this about the third book in this series which I read first, which is that there are a lot of characters and it's hard to keep track of who is who.
I love Historical Romances like Promises Kept by Scarlett Dunn. I love being able to see how things used to be even if through the eyes of a fictional romance. It's fun and it lets me forget the kind of world we're in now for just a little bit.
Victoria Eastman is a strong woman. For much of the book it seems like she doesn't even fathom just how strong she is. And to be honest, while I love the cover, according to the descriptions of her in the book it does her no justice. So here we have this gorgeous woman who tries like hell to hold her own and provide for her boys. She's willing to go so far as to advertise her need/want of a husband. Someone who can help take care of her and the kids.
Colt McBride is the dreamy sort of cowboy that every woman, or at least a lot of them, fantasize about at least once in their lives. The kind that will step in and defend you. The kind that will take care of you. The kind that will treat you with the utmost respect. And the kind that will make you melt like a popsicle on the pavement in July. He's a hard worker and he's a good, kind man. He takes care of people and they love him for it.
But both of them are stubborn as hell. And it gets frustrating at times. Victoria has sworn off cowboys all together and Colt swears that he's never going to get married. Ever. Haven't fictional characters figured out yet that they shouldn't do that sort of thing? I suppose it's good that they did, or else we'd not have fantastic stories like this to read.
Not everything is biscuits and gravy though. There's a man in town who wants the land that was left to Victoria, and all of the land around it, and has decided he will stop at nothing until he owns it all. This includes stealing and killing off cattle... and people. He even goes so far as to try and "court" Victoria but things turn sour and she's not sure how to save herself, or her boys.
I loved this book. I think I may have mentioned that already. I love period novels. Just love them to death. Promises Kept delivers the window in to history along with the romance and the suspense all rolled up together. There are a lot of wonderful characters that we get to meet and see fleshed out quite a lot. Even if they seem like they're just background, they're not. No one is just a "bit part". I think that's wonderful. Lots of well rounded people to love and read about.
If you love historical romances, this is definitely the book for you. If you love Christian or inspirational fiction, this is the book for you. Even if you don't, this is still a wonderful story to read because it's not an overwhelming aspect of the book at all.
I am definitely looking forward to reading others in this series!
Victoria works as the cook in a boarding house in St Louis, Missouri as the cook. She arrived with two small boys in tow claiming they were her brothers. That was not exactly the truth; she took the boys with her when she left a saloon in Abilene two years ago to save them from the orphanage.
She needs a husband to help her care for the boys, provide a home, and a father figure. The boys keep asking for a Pa. She won’t consider a cowboy, as one had almost raped her; she had nothing but bad trouble with cowboys. She advertises for a husband out west and travels to Promise, Wyoming to farmer Chet Barlow; he was the only that did not make reference to her wifely duties. The writers were very explicit in what they expected whether they married her or not.
Before leaving St Louis for Promise she served dinner to huge handsome cowboy, Colt McBride, from Wyoming in town checking on an inheritance left from his uncle.
There’s trouble in Promise, Wyoming; Chet is farming in the middle of cattle country. Euan Wallace is as crooked as they come, mean as a snake, and thinks he is God; he wants Chet’s land for the water and everyone else’s land as well, by hook, crook, hired gunmen, or murder.
Victoria, along with a stray dog she acquired along the trip, arrives in Promise, Wyoming to the news that Chet has died from a possible heart attack, and who gives her the news but the huge handsome cowboy, Colt McBride. What were the chances he lived next door to her intended?
There are lots of ugly things going on and around Colts’ ranch; cattle killed and rustled, neighbors practically run off their land, and mysterious fires meant to burn them out. Colt’s can’t prove its Wallace, but everyone knows it’s him; Wallace has the Sheriff in his back pocket, so he has no help from that quarter.
Colt has been alone a long time, his brothers left when Colt became so wrapped up in the ranch after their father’s death. Cole wants them to come home; he also wants to bring the man who caused his mother’s death to justice by his gun. Meanwhile, the attraction is beginning to heat up between Colt and Victoria.
Wallace has decided he needs a wife to enhance his standing, and to dress up this life.
Victoria has secrets, secrets that are sure to be exposed, deep secrets. Colt and Victoria will finally have a happy ever after but not before adversity and evil will impact their lives. This is a clean love story between two strong people fighting for their future in the west, where only the strong survive and evil at every turn.
I look forward to the next book in this series. I recommend this book for any one that like a good solid clean love story.
I received this book from the publisher and Netgalley in return for an honest opinion.

Review:
This book has it all, great plot, great characters. This is one of those rear books you start reading, and you can’t put it down until it’s finished even if that’s at 2:30 am. Not many books keep me reading way into the early mornings. You see I live on a small ranch and have chores to do early morning, and I’m one of those people who needs 7 to 8 hours a sleep most days, but I just couldn’t seem to be able to walk away from this story. It had me laughing at parts and crying at others, and then just plan mad that Victoria could be so blind.
Reading this story was like watching a movie in my head as I read it. I could see it and feel everything that was going on. I didn’t find any grammatical or punctuation errors, which always makes the story that much better. The flow, as well as the development of the characters, and plot is spot on.
I fully understood why Victoria had lost her faith. I’ve walked away from fear, which isn’t nearly as bad as feeling God isn’t answering your prays or watching over you. I could feel the pain of abandonment she felt from God. I know when you shut the door on him; it's hard to see what is right in front of your face. All the emotions within this story feel so real from each of the characters. I don’t have a favorite one I loved each and everyone and, so look forward to reading more about them in the up-coming sequel.
Conclusion:
Would I recommend this book to my friends? YES Would I read other books from this author? YES and I plan to read each book in this series. Is this a Novella or Novel? Novel Is this book priced correctly? Yes the price listed for a paperback copy seems very fare.
Scarlett Dunn in her new book, “Promises Kept” Book One in The McBride Brothers series published by Zebra introduces us to Victoria Eastman.
From the back cover: Lady of marriageable age with two young boys, in need of husband.

Don’t you just love the name of the town in Wyoming: Promise? I think this is a great way to begin a series. She travels all the way to Wyoming to meet this potential future husband and finds him dead. However she does meet Colt whom she had met previously. Their relationship develops and that is what the book is about. This is a very nice romance. There are secrets that come to light, pasts that are exposed and a faith that needs to be reignited. Victoria and Colt are interesting characters that capture your attention and bring you into their world. I am glad I found this talented author and am looking forward to the next book in this series.

Wow! If I could give this book 10 stars, I wouldn’t hesitate. Action, adventure, mystery, intrigue, love, hate, death, life, sacrifice, a beautiful and strong woman, a hunky and hot cowboy – this book has it all and then some. This clean but definitely not boring romance was a page-turner for me that was very hard to put down, and it is definitely on my ‘to read again’ list.
Victoria Eastman is raising two young boys and the boardinghouse that she works in, while providing a roof over their heads and food for their bellies, isn’t where she wants the boys to grow up. She wants them to have a sense of family and home. She places an ad for a husband, and while she receives several replies, one from Mr. Chet Barlow of Promise, Wyoming catches her eye. Although she knows nothing of the man but what he reveals of himself, she senses he might be a good man and decides to travel to meet him, and leaves the boys behind with her boss, Mrs. Wellington, who knows nothing about her past or her true intent for her travels.
Colt McBride couldn’t be more stunned to see Victoria at the home of his good friend and neighbor, Chet Barlow, until he learns she is his intended bride. He met Victoria back in St. Louis the night before he returned home, and she made several more appearances in his thoughts since that time. Colt arrives to Chet’s home to take care of some unfortunate business, but ends up taking care of Victoria too.
There is so much that happens from here that it is difficult to sum up without giving away any of the unfolding secrets, so I will just stop here. The author did a wonderful job of bringing in color to paint the story, a variety of supporting characters and storylines kept things interesting and moving, and the little glimpses of chemistry between Victoria and Colt was enough to bring a smile to my face and a little extra thump to my heart.
Thank you to the author and publisher for an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
“Promises Kept” is an inspirational western historical romance, the first book in the “Mcbride Brother’s” series. It captured my attention immediately and the plot line moved at a steady pace. I enjoyed getting to know the characters and I felt that they were multi-dimensional; you were able to get a good picture of not just their dreams but their struggles as well. This was an easy read that was fun without the emotional entanglement. It was more like a fun Monday evening 30 minute episode, than a full blown drama. I would dub it cotton candy for the brain, not a great deal of substance but incredibly enjoyable. I had a hard time putting it down and read the entire book in one day. It is definitely more “inspirational” than “Christian”, so if that is what you are looking for you may be disappointed at the minimal faith based undercurrent in the story line. I enjoy books that make me think outside of the story; and I felt “Promises Kept” made me realize how many promises God has kept in my own life, even if they were not on my timetable. It encouraged me to look at the bigger picture than the here and now and I applaud the author for infusing a current of hope in her book. Overall I would give “Promises Kept” four out of five stars. I would definitely recommend it to a friend, it was an enjoyable read, and takes the reader on an exciting adventure of intrigue, love, and faith. I look forward to reading the next book in the “McBride Brother’s” series.

Victoria Eastman has given up on God and her prayers. Instead she focuses on taking care of Cade and Cody, twins that she rescued. With a past full of pain and despair, she feels God has forgotten her and her dreams of a home will never come true..
Victoria places an advertisement for a husband who would serve as a father to the boys, but she doesn't expect anything for herself. When she gets an answer from a farmer she believes he is the one and makes arrangements to travel to meet him.
Colt McBride first sees Victoria in St. Louis, Missouri when he travels there when his uncle passes. While having lunch Colt notices Victoria and she leaves a lasting impression on this bachelor. Colt never expected to see her show up at his neighbors with intentions on marrying.
Colt and Victoria grow more attracted to each other as together they face trials they weren't expecting. Colt draws on his faith in God to get through while Victoria believes God doesn't care. But God does care and she will finally realize God has answered her prayers when she wasn't looking.
Scarlett Dunn writes a great story centering on love and faith. She paints a story showing that even during the times we may have let that faith go dormant God has not left us.
This is the first in what looks to be a series. The next book will be about Colt's brother, Jake McBride.
Victoria Eastman is desperate. She has two young boys to care for and is making little wages as a cook for a boarding house. She places an ad for a mail-order husband. What’s the harm? Men place ads for mail-order brides all the time. Of course, she doesn’t have any idea who is writing to her, asking for her to be his bride. She accepts the proposal, but decides to travel to Wyoming without her boys to check it out first. She finds, upon her arrival, that her intended has passed away. Colt McBride to the rescue! He tries to help Victoria out and keep her from harm. There are those who would murder for their land. Victoria has a secret too. No one knows about her past and she is not providing any information. “Promises Kept” by Scarlett Dunn is a really good western romance novel which I enjoyed it very much.
I can't say enough nice things about this book! I loved it! What made it even better was finding out there is going to be another; I am assuming there are going to be two more since there are two brothers! I cannot wait to read the next book! If you are a fan of inspirational historical romance books look no further! My favorite type of romance book is inspirational historical and if it involves mail order brides it is even better! I have always been fascinated by mail order brides because for one reason or another they are willing to leave their lives as they know it to embark on an adventure and go west to marry someone they have never met. The exception with this book is she meets the man before going west to marry someone else, only to find the man she was meant to marry died and left her his land; and just happens to be neighbors with a rancher with ulterior motives, he wants her and the two boys she is raising.
I received access to this as an E-book from the publisher via Netgalley in return for an honest review.
As far as Christian, Historical Romance goes, this book is about as close to perfect as I have ever come across. The characters are gritty and believable. The plot has just enough tension to keep you on the edge of your seat but still resolves nicely in the end. The bad guy is just the right amount of bad and actually plays a part in the whole book. The only thing I would have liked better is if the book had carried on for another chapter or two so that we could see . I am so excited that this is the first book in the series and I can't wait to get my hands on the next book(s)! I will definitely be buying a physical copy of this book!
I really liked this book. It was clean, it was fast paced. It has some twists to the plot that were off the beaten path. I really liked how Victoria really tried to turn her life around and do right by the boys. They were a big responsibility for her. It was an intricate web of a story.
Promises Kept was one of those books that was hard to put down. And yes, it was, in places, predictable. But this one was rare. The author told the story from the view points of almost every major character. You got to know the insights of a souther bell, an old man, a vicious man, a cowboy, etc. It was truly unique and a nice change. I would definitely recommend.
I really liked this romance story. It had a good plot and character development which kept the story going for me. Romances are not my typical genre of choice, but this one was a nice surprise. It was well written from a grammatical standpoint and the plot moved along at a good pace which kept me interested. I'll be looking for the additional books in this trilogy!
