Busty babe Holly Hagan has had viewers of Geordie Shore glued to their screens ever since her arrival in the first series. Fed up with her dead end job at a call center, and with dreams of being a star one day, Holly applied for a new reality TV show. She couldn’t know it was to catapult her into fame and make her one of the most recognizable faces on British TV. Fame and fortune, though, came at a price—the road from the call center to the celebrity circuit has been far from smooth. For the first time, Holly is lifting the lid on the perks and perils she’s faced ever since her topless hot tub antics shocked the nation. Holly owes her success to a very simple change of look, which involved both a new bottle of red hair dye and a newfound confidence. Ever since then, audiences have been in stitches as they watch Holly (and her flame-red hair) flirt her way around Newcastle’s famed "Diamond Strip," and places further afield, such as Magaluf, Cancun, and Australia. In this action-packed, revealing, funny, and sometimes heartbreaking memoir, Holly recounts her life in and out of the limelight with brutal honesty—from her childhood days when she was badly bullied, her shocking take on sex and dating, her liaison with bad-boy musician Frankie Cocozza, and what really goes on behind-the-scenes on the UK’s biggest reality TV show. Filled with genuinely touching stories and inside accounts of what they don’t show you on TV, Holly has laid herself bare, first physically and now emotionally. If you think you know all there is to know about Holly from Geordie Shore, think again.
In recent months I've read and reviewed two autobiographies from the Geordie Shore cast, Vicky's and Gaz's, however the book I was most excited for in all honesty was Holly's when I first read about it back in July. I love Holly on Geordie Shore and despite some moments that have left me cringing she is definitely my favourite out of the cast now. I was also happy to see that the book was ghostwritten by Elissa Corrigan who I loved on Desperate Scousewives.
First of all I can't applaud Holly enough for sharing her story. Anyone who has faced any of the issues in this book; bullying, body issues, confidence issues, family breakdowns, acceptance from people you want to like you, whatever, will know how easy it is to try and bottle it up or try to pretend it didn't happen and so it must be a thousand times more difficult to share those stories with the world and do it as openly and honestly as Holly has done here. As somebody who has experienced bullying myself, I had a lump in my throat reading the chapters surrounding her awful experiences in school, started off over a trivial misunderstanding. This eventually led to her developing issues about her weight after more silly comments in school. There are plenty of touching and humorous moments in her upbringing as well and there are some great stories shared here.
After leaving school Holly now had the dilemma that plagues every young person - what to do with her life. Little did she know that an application for a new reality TV show would change her life forever. That reality TV show being of course, Geordie Shore. Having previously read books from the other housemates I was worried some bits might feel repetitive but it's always interesting to get other sides of the story and to see what Holly's opinion was of everything that went down. Geordie Shore is real, yet certain things are exaggerated, blown out of proportion, or not shown as we only see a few hours out of days worth of footage and so it's very easy to form an opinion of somebody from what the people editing the footage want you to see. Holly herself admits in the book that they can only edit what you yourself do, but still it can be done in a way that can make certain people look worse than they are (or make some people look better than they are as is the case here). They might all be friends (most of the time) now but it was definitely a rocky start.
Watching the first couple of episodes of Geordie Shore I'd say every single housemate had annoying qualities, and it's only when you live with someone that you really see how annoying they can be (like when you go on holiday) and I think it's really unfair how Holly was treated in the earlier episodes and the way she was spoken about. Yes she has her own mind but as a young girl she was easily swayed by the men and didn't have the backup of the girls to stop her. Geordie Shore for the viewer is entertainment yet for the people featured it's real life and no amount of money in the world can make up for feeling like an outcast, or receiving death threats from people sitting behind a computer screen. A lesser woman would surely have packed her bags and left for good.
The Geordie Shore chapters are essentially season recaps but from Holly's point of view and I loved reliving all the crazy moments that the show has given us. It's mad how different the same things look through someone else's eyes. Certain things that Gaz and Vicky talked about are talked about here but in a totally different way. What intrigued me most was the attitude of James towards Holly. It was actually a bit uncomfortable to read at times and I'm shocked at what went on behind the scenes between those two. At the time I thought James was a fool for not wanting to get with Holly or admit his feelings and after reading this I find it even more bizarre.
Holly herself has said she doesn't want to be a role model for young women and in terms of the drinking and the way she behaves at times on Geordie Shore that's understandable but I think by sharing the story of her early life here so honestly and showing that you can overcome anything has made her somewhat of a role model in that respect. She comes across as confident on Geordie Shore but still faces the same insecurities and worries that plague thousands of women. Holly is beautiful inside and out (certainly for me the sexiest out of the girls, and facially the most attractive) she was just really young when the show started and didn't know then what she does now.
Overall my opinion of Holly couldn't be higher after reading this book and I do have a newfound respect for her. I was a fan already but I only love her even more after reading this book. She has never backed down in her life and you can see that has made her the woman she is today. She's brave, honest and doesn't take any rubbish from anybody and that's always admirable. Also she holds her hands up to all her mistakes. This certainly isn't a woe is me tale where Holly tries to blame everything on other people, she admits to all her faults and discusses everything openly rather than choosing the topics to discuss and shying away from others like so many people do when they write their autobiographies.
Holly is now looking the best she has ever looked and her career is only going from strength to strength and no matter what the haters say they can't take that away from her. I'm only jealous that my brother got to meet her at his university Freshers week recently! This book is a definite must read for fans of Holly and Geordie Shore but could also serve as an eyeopener to those that think there isn't much to the cast of Geordie Shore. They are a lot more intelligent and savvy than you might think. Whether you have a positive or negative opinion about Holly or the cast, all it does is help them make even more money giving them the last laugh. Interest in the show is still high in the run up to the new series and I wonder just how long it can continue. I hope for a while longer yet. This book comes highly recommended by me.
First off, this book wasn't written by Holly Hagan. It was written by ghostwriter Elissa Corrigan. Which is fine - I have no issues with ghostwriters, apart from getting the theme tune to the 80s kids TV show of the same name stuck in my head for hours after reading the word.
In this book, we read about Holly's childhood. Which was by all accounts, a fairly normal one. Her parents split up but both did everything they could for Holly. She looked up to Katie Price as a role model, and wanted to be a TV star. She threw caution and morals to the wind and was quite happy to bare all or have sex on TV to make it as a reality star or onto the cover of a lad's mag - if that 's what she wanted, more power to her. She achieved her dreams.
But it's really, really not interesting to read about. Yes, Holly had some struggles - she went through bullying and has had weight and self harm issues (you might want to skip chapter 7 if you have or have had self-harm issues, because there are pretty big triggers there - you're not missing much, really) but for the most part, she has had a good life, and is enjoying herself.
There isn't much about Geordie Shore that people who have watched all seasons won't know - she felt isolated at the start, she didn't really get on with Vicky, she felt angry and annoyed at how she was treated by James, she didn't like Marnie. That's really it.
She devotes an entire chapter to Rita Ora after they had a twitter spat once - presumably to show Rita how much it doesn't bother her? Or something.
The self-harm scars are not mentioned at all in any single one of the many paragraphs that talk about her boobs, body, or photoshoots for Nuts. I thought that was strange, surely she would have thought of them or mentioned them after the first few chapters were so full of anguish about her body.
She thanks several people in the acknowledgements (even Amy Childs and her mother) but not one single mention of any of the Geordie Shore housemates. She also mentions how well she has always gotten on with the TOWIE cast, having earlier referred to them as "Grey Goose Wankers".
It just wasn't an interesting read, unfortunately. It came off as "poor me, I've had it hard, but look at how creative and tough I am, most reality TV stars aren't as honest or as brave as me". There's no substance here at all. The most saddening sentence in the entire book for me was this one:
"We aren't supposed to bring books into the [Geordie Shore] house but Vicky always sneaks a couple in".
At the start of the book, Holly (or Elissa) writes:
"Leave your prejudgements at the door because I'm inviting you to get to know me, the real me, and perhaps then you can make your own mind up becasue what you see is not what you get. I'm fake, I'm flirty and I have got double FFs, but I'm not quite like you see onscreen. I'm not quite famous and I'm not always the boozy, promiscuous lass you'd expect. And I'm not quite a Geordie. In fact, I'm not a Geordie at all."
But the entire book was about her achieving fame, about her drinking, and about her promiscuity. If you took all those stories away you'd be left with anecdotes about dying her hair. She seems to be EXACTLY what we see onscreen. A loud, brash young girl who gets pissed a lot.
The book needs another going over from an editor - "mam", "dad" and "nana" should all have capital letters, the word "focussed" only needs one "s", and "Right Here Waiting For You" was not a Bryan Adams song.
I didn't learn anything about Holly, apart from learning that what is shown on Geordie Shore is sadly fairly accurate.
I like Holly, I wouldn't say I'm an avid watcher of Geordie Shore but I have enjoyed it in the past; holly has always been my favourite character. And I wasn't expecting some kind of classic but i feel writing as you speak kind of, for me anyway, takes away the joy of a well written book. But what really disappointed me was the shame seems to live by. Being fat is not something to be ashamed of, sleeping around is nothing to be ashamed of but not being yourself, dumbing yourself down and letting anyone (especially a man) tell you you're not good enough is disgusting. I found the whole book exhausting and it total took the shine off what she has achieved and the good things she really could have promoted. Maybe I was wrong for thinking she was a strong, independent woman?
I'm a huge fan of Geordie Shore, and Of Holly herself. I enjoyed the book and although Holly states most prolifically throughout the book that she doesn't consider herself to be a role model to young girls, or that she should be considered as one, I worry that girls may still try to emulate her through the things she describes in the book. I myself identified with her in various places and I am a lot older than her. I do support her choice in writing this book, she has been through quite a lot in her short years i'm glad that through Geordie Shore she has found her path in life and is excelling. I wish her all the luck in the world :)
I'm going to be honest here ... I wasn't a HUGE fan of Holly and I did think her book was going to be about getting drunk and uninteresting wannabe stories but she totally surprised me. I feel she didn't try and defend anything she does she owned it and explained why she is the way she is and I admire her for that. Really enjoyed this book and I always recommend it to people who talk about Geordie shore. I would like her to bring out another book, reading charlottes one next so I will see how that goes...
A brilliant insight into one of my favourite Geordie Shore characters. Holly really let's us into some very distressing times in her life and she should be applauded for her courage and who she has become today.
Holly has always been my favourite on GS, but reading this has really opened my eyes and made me love her more. I'd love to see another book written in a few years :)
Badly written, structural issues, many grammatical errors and contradictory stories and facts.
I like Geordie Shore, it's a guilty pleasure and I thought this would be similar to watching the show. It wasn't. It was boring. I ended up skimming it because I just wanted it to end.
Very surprising and a great insight into Hollys mind
Well I was thoroughly shocked by this book. This week I’ve been reading all the Geordie Shore memoirs and I’ve enjoyed the other 3 but this one took me by surprise. I’ve always loved Holly and can’t rewatch the first season due to how badly she was treated. But I was apprehensive about reading her book. She just doesn’t strike me as someone who’d put much effort into it but the book was amazing. It’s like it’s made her real and not just this mental bright haired girl on my tv screen. She has a very deep mind, which you’d never expect from the show Holly, she feels so much and is hurt so many times but she bounces back. She finds things to be grateful about. It was devastating reading her stories about bullying and all the heartbreak she’s experienced. But that girl just gets herself together and keeps coming back, I like to think of myself as a very strong woman but Holly has a strength that can’t be faked. She’s walked into rooms knowing she’s hated and talked about but she flourishes.
This book explained so much about her that I’ve always wondered. Why is she so up for having sexy times on tv? Why does she hate herself? I wish she could see what others see because she’s an incredible woman. She was never my favourite character because some of the others are just so much louder and crazier that they’d always be top of my faves list. Now my favourite is Holly, she is so much more than she appears on stage and she has a cunning mind and intelligence.
I hope she shakes off the negative mindsets she has about sex and love and her appearance. She’s never been ugly or unlovable but the world has convinced her she is all those things. Thoroughly enjoyed this book and I hope one day to read a more up to date account of her life. Since she’s obviously become even more famous and left Geordie Shore. Highly recommend this book to anyone curious. I feel Hollys is the best written autobiography that’s come from geordie shore and even though it was ghost written it sounds exactly like Holly, it’s as if she’s speaking to you.
I loved this book, I love Holly but she isn’t my favourite on Geordie Shore, I did love her book, it felt very real on topics such as bullying, body confidence, family breakdowns etc. This book made me respect her more for definite, and view her in a different light and I really did enjoy this book.
My only criticism is that I felt she was making out she’d been bullied far worse than anyone else, she’d had everything worse than regular people who also face these trials and tribulations every single day.
Overall, I wasn’t impressed with her “woe is me” attitude which I felt she has always had, but I am pleased I got to see her in a different light.
Not always the most well written book out there, but a genuine, honest telling from a girl who chose a path different than most. I was very entertained; I already liked Holly and those feelings have only grown from this glimpse into her mind and reasoning. Way-aye, Las!
This book has to be given 4 stars as far as I am concerned, I do enjoy Geordie Shore and I do like Holly (she isn’t my favourite) but I was excited to read this as I wanted to know more about her as a person away from reality TV.
I was only slightly disappointed as I felt like I was reading the book of today’s typical 15 year old girl. Bullying, etc is something that a lot of people have to go through and I felt she were trying to make out she had suffered with typical problems but made out she’d had it much worse than anyone else.
Apart from this I do still like holly and I do like this autobiography.
Okay She annoys the crap out of me. She does not want to be called a slag but was always acting as one, looking like one and telling everybody she was one.
Then there is the fact she thinks she is all that. Here some quotes
"It was clear to everyone who ran the show (Geordie Shore) I was the one who ran the show"
"It was me they were writing about. They weren't featuring any of the other girls or lads,(from GS) it was just me.
Then she wrote not very nice about James. Well I have watched every episode and she would not leave him alone. She is now blaming him that he used her but it was obvious from the start that he was ashamed of being with her which should had her stop trying to get with him because if he thinks like that he is not worth it. But no she kept on stalking him and one night even grabbed his cock while sleeping. She did at least say if a man had done that with a girl it would have been called something different. Just do not like she is blaming him. She was just as wrong.
Then there is the fact she is telling us how she did not have respect for herself. Well I have just watched the last season, season 11 and she still seems not to have any respect for herself. I used to like her but this season she is so stupid and annoying. Can't stand women who fuck over their friends just because of a man who is not even treating her right and who change for a guy. I do hope she will get a bit stronger and self assured but she should first realize Kyle is a wanker..
She now thinks she is also a worldy but I do Not agree. She has such a great figure but those humongous boobs are appalling and she is always flashing those huge side boops. lmao..
Sorry rant over. I think she is so different than I am with such different values (not sure if she has any) but she is not mean I do not think. I hope she will be over Kyle but reading the papers even after Greece she is still telling the papers they are such good friends and they will be back.rolls eyes
Kyle is the only one of the cast I really do not like. The others make me laugh (most of the time)
So finished this book.
Conclusion: This is not a great book but if you like Geordie Shore or and Holly you might find it interesting. Perhaps I would have liked it better if I had not just watched season 11 and thought Holly's behaviour and adoration of Kyle annoying but I do not think so.
later in the book so after my rant Holly did say some things I did agree with her like how crazy it is that nowadays reality star and people that have not done anything for the world are adored and she states" "Why not have Olympians or doctors, or powerful business women as role models, not celebrities. I have parents who tweet me and tell me that their kids want to grow up to be like me and be famous. Then I kind of have to stop myself from replying that may sound like I'm being a bit harsh" Holly herself wanted to be like Katie Price she tells us in the next breath. lol
Plus she also realises this fame of hers can be over and that you should appreciate it till it lasts. This means she is definitely not dumb to me.
It is just quite empty which is logical if you write a book about your life and you are still so young and the only thing interesting is the Geordie Shore part.
I've read a few autobiographies from the cast of Geordie Shore (Gaz and Charlotte) but this remains my favourite. We find out who the real Holly is as she tells of her life and trials and tribulations. She works so hard to fit in and struggled in the first series of GS to be accepted, however over the seasons and the years this pretty and confident young woman seems now happy in her own skin. She is my favourite from the show and this down to earth book makes for interesting reading.
Don't get me wrong, I was under no illusions with this book, in that I didn't think it would be a life changer. Holly comes across precocious and self inflated at times, however I think that's the nature of 'celebrity'. And she is young. However she gives a good insight into the behind the scenes of the awesome Geordie Shore, of which she is a big character and likeable. She also shares some very personal moments of her bullying, self harming and eating disorders, which for anyone who has experienced any of these, or been a bully themselves can understand how their actions affect someone for the rest of their life. Very honest, open and self deprecating. Fair play to open yourself up like that. And shame on all those appalling people who have said such vile things to a young, impressionable woman.
I just needed a quick read, to take my mind off things for a couple of hours and since I had just bought this, I thought "why not?" The book was fun and light hearted, and of course it was filled with clichés about never giving up your dreams and always staying true to yourself. But it was also brutally honest and at times heart breakingly sad. I won't go into details, but I definitely enjoyed this book, maybe because I quite like Holly and find her very interesting (and stunningly beautiful). It was also nice to get a bit of insight information about Geordie Shore and how it works. If you want a quick and fun read, and either enjoys Geordie Shore or just reality TV in general you should definitely pick it up.
I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book! I've been watching geordie shore since I was about 12. I'm now 19 and it's crazy to think of all the things holly went through when she was my age. Reading about holly's childhood and teenage years was really refreshing. I feel like any girl who grew up in a working-class area of Britain could relate to her experiences. I really enjoyed reading about how she got onto the show and her experiences throughout the seasons of the show. I am genuinely so happy for her that she is now happier and confident.
Since reading this I can't wait to read all the other Geordie Shore auto-biographies.
On one hand I enjoyed it and reading about her history made me understand her story and feel for her more than I did before (I've always been a holly fan). On the other, being a fan of the show the last few paragraphs were things I already knew and no exciting change to what I already thought. I was also quite glad I had watched the show in places so I understood the story in the book a bit more as sometimes facts were dropped with no back ground history.
Overall I enjoyed but won't rush to tell all Geordie shore fans they need to read it.
it's easy to judge and have a perception about a person when the only part of them that you witness is what a television show allows you to see. Although entertaining in Geordie Shore, Holly definitely clears up any misconceptions and you begin to see her in a new light.
I don't watch Geordie Shore but thought I would read the book as I had heard a fair bit about it. The book is really interesting and kept my interest throughout. Holly comes across really well and tells it how it is.x
Holly, you're, my fave out of Geordie Shore and I thoroughly enjoyed your bio. It was interesting to read about how you continued to struggle through life, however bad it got and to now be loved by thousands. I shall be buying your body bible next!!!!!
Before reading this book, I do watch Geordie Shore and really liked Holly on there however after reading her book, I think she's extremely fake and very self centred. She came across as a complete idiot and has definitely gone down in my opinion.
Holly's book was heart felt and intriguing. I had only wished that she had gone into more detail with the subjects we had wanted to know about from her exposure on TV. Her spirit and determination is nothing but encouraging.
a little boring I normally love celeb autobiographies but its like she didn't have much to say, perhaps its cos she's so young, I skimmed over last few chapters wanting it to end, disappointed
