Toxin 톡신 is a manhwa following a half demon with no name, who is part of the Imhae village. Due to his mixed background, only his mother is kind to him, and he faces countless hardships. The hardest of all occurs when the Dark Emperor comes to conquer his village, killing many, including the nameless half demon’s mother. Determined for revenge, the half demon will do anything in his power to kill the Dark Emperor. This is a very dark story with themes of violence, obsession, grief, and guilt.
You’re going to get: -a fantasy world (based in Korea) -a love triangle (obsession triangle?) between a half demon and two powerful figures -undercover plotting -sad backstories -obsession (idk if this can be called a romance tbh)
This manhwa gave me total mixed feelings. On one hand, it was unpredictable in a lot of aspects, so I was hooked on reading it. The art was beautifully done, and the atmosphere was tense and captivating. On the other hand, the story itself, while being entertaining, had so many little disappointing aspects to it. Like, it felt like it ended without many aspects being properly dealt with. In that sense, it made me frustrated by the ending.
TW since it’s hard to find them otherwise: R*pe and s*xual assault (often and between MCs), murder and violence, confinement, and toxic relationships
I started Toxin (manhwa) and didn’t have patience for the next season so I read the novel where it left off.
Maybe I would have a different opinion if I read the entire novel, but it wasn’t as good as I expected.
SPOILERS
I think it would have been better if the brother turned out to be evil. He was too nice and I was convinced he was going to be the true antagonist, but nah. Overall, I felt bad for him, but also kept hoping he would go away and stop co*k blocking ML and MCs relationship development.
I also wish there was more chemistry between the MC and ML. Their dialogue wasn’t anything spectacular.
Lastly, I wish the poison had more of an effect on ML. It took a long time to work and when it did it hindered ML very minimally. I did want to see him suffer a bit and witness the angst that came with that.
DNFed around 15% when I realized that the ML that I was supposed to root for was the asshole who killed the MC’s mom???? I loved the author’s other two books, Carat and Healer, so I’m sad that this one was such a disappointment. Like, the ML in Healer was EXTREMELY flawed, but for some reason he was more appealing than Toxin’s ML. I guess I can excuse accidental human trafficking, but I draw the line at mass genocide? Idk man I’m tired.
