Amidst the lawlessness of 1880’s New Mexico, the mayor’s wife, Mrs. Hershey, is determined to find wives for the towns most notorious and eligible bachelors. But little does she realize the magnitude of the challenges that face her, because matching perfect strangers is far more difficult than it looks.
Down on her luck and on her last dime, Chastity Donovan arrives in Boot Creek to marry a miner, but she soon discovers he’s an alcoholic outlaw with a murderous bent. Chastity is now responsible for Enoch’s two children, who have run wild over the years with little schooling. Dismayed, and dejected, Chastity finds her new life is not what she had envisioned.
Lucian Ellison’s train robbing past is about to put him on a collision course with Chastity, after he arrives on Enoch’s doorstep to collect his share in a robbery. One look at Chastity changes everything, because the lovely redhead is in desperate need of rescuing, and he’s just the man to steal her away. But, her new husband might have a thing or two to say about that … and the law as well, as someone is about to hang for his crimes.

As a fan of clean romances I found this acceptable because there was no graphic sex. This was an interesting story with characters that seemed true to their time and place in the American west and was well written and authentic. I marveled at how Chastity demonstrated over and over again the plight of women at that time. Ms. White did her research well. I leave it to other reviewers to re-tell the story. Let me just say that this is a book worth reading. You will be captivated by the story and will come away with a much greater appreciation for women of that day.
Fairly entertaining, but very poor editing. It is very distracting for a reader when there are misuses of terms such as "make due" instead of the correct usage and spelling of the term "make do", as well as using the word "due" in place of the correct word "do." A good editor would catch and correct these grammatical errors, as well as other spelling errors. I hope Ms. White's writing improves.
This is a love triangle between a mail order bride and two outlaws--one a dirty, disgusting cretin, and the other a charming, handsome gentleman with a devil-may-care streak. So who do you think is gonna end up with the girl? Huh?
Our heroine gets set up with the disgusting guy and marries him out of a duty to keep her promise. She takes care of him and his kids, although, of course, she's really in love with the dashing outlaw. Chastity is the name of the mail order bride, and she maintains her chastity night after night even after marriage due to her husband's inability to remain conscious after heavy drinking. How convenient that she doesn't get "soiled" even after the arranged marriage. It leaves her chaste for her true love whenever a miracle happens to allow her to go to him. And what kind of miracle needs to happen to free her from her marriage if she's too nice a girl to simply walk out on her husband and kids? Once again, anyone taking bets on what's gotta happen?
OK, I wasn't expecting classic prose. But this book has no real surprises in the plot. Exactly what I expected had to happen is what happened. And it isn't helped by the one dimensional characters.
I give it three stars for clear writing and the author's willingness to include some graphic description of death, despite the fact that this is one of those "clean" romances where there's no sex or rough language. Other than that, there just isn't much to recommend this story.
The mayor’s wife is a match maker. She does her best to get couples married off. The town drunk has two children and they need a mother. Chastity’s determination to help the children keeps her married to a drunken criminal. He ends up shooting a Pinkerton man and his friend comes to collect half of his earnings.
I must say the drunken criminals ending didn’t go well. In my opinion he would have been better off shot and killed. I think the story was okay. Not my favourite but was worth a read!
Carre` White has a talent for writing about strong independent women who often times must rely upon their own intellect and power. In her book The Mail Order Brides of Boot Creek: Wretched Chasity, Chasity has answered an ad to become a mail order bride in order to escape debtor’s prison after the death of her mother. Chasity was disappointed to find that her new husband is a man that enjoys too much whiskey and has probably met soap and water in a very long time, but when she meets his children she knows that her purpose has been sealed by their eager faces. Upon arriving at her new home the recently created family is met by a handsome stranger who shares a past with Chasity’s new husband. She quickly finds out that her new life involves outlaws, Pinkertons, and a lot of gold. As the hunt for gold ensues, so does Chastity’s attraction to the handsome stranger, and when fate places them together their destiny is sealed with a kiss.
If you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything at all. So I usually won't write a review unless I enjoyed the book. However, I wouldn't feel right if I didn't warn others to avoid this book. The only part I liked was Enoch's jailhouse conversation with his kids, even though it was as unrealistic as the rest of the story. I would have given it negative stars if that were an option.
This book didn't do much for me. Chastity was weak in so many ways even though she kept saying she could cope with anything. Was she really that desperate to stay with the smelly drunk who she could barely be in the same room with? There were lots of her thoughts and doing the right thing but then she acted in a completely different manner with Lucian and the lawmen. I didn't hate it but it almost wasn't worth the short amount of time it took to read it.
This is a twist on the mail order bride story. She shows up to marry the town drunk who has two children. Almost at once she also finds out that he is also an outlaw with a troop of marshmallows after him. Will the stranger protect her or is he only after the hidden gold?
this isn't my favourite book by this author, it's not mail order bride falls in love with new husband and lives happily ever after, not a bad thing, but I think it's just lacking in a certain kind of truth or believability, I didn't warm to any of the characters, the bride seems to have a few personalities.
Mail ordered bride that started with a drunken lout, then her luck got worse.
Short story with plenty of adventure if not a little gruesome at times. It was a little different as the husband was truly disgusting, drunken & outlaw to boot. Only redeeming quality was he didn't hit his kids.
Excellent character development. It was easy to picture it happening. However, I was troubled by the fact that the author allowed Chastity to have feelings for a man who was not her husband. As I continued reading the story, the interaction between the two felt more like an emotional affair. I would not recommend this to my Christian friends.
This was the first book I had read by this author. I enjoyed reading this book and it was good for a quick read. I'll be looking more into her books and look forward to reading the remaining books in the series.
Overall, it's a pretty good story. The first few pages had me skeptical and dreading having to read the full story. Luckily it picked up afterwards and continued to hold my interest until the end.
