A down-on-her-luck fast food employee finds out things can get worse when she finds herself battling cosmic horrors with her teenage coworkers after a cult ritual goes south inside their city's beloved theme park.
The cover pulled me in, the quote from her mum sold it to me. This was a fun, chaotic story that very much read like a character's stream of consciousness rather than any typical structure, and really helps sell this kinetic energy of this world in an instant, long before the madness starts to take over.
This is a fun book sprinkled in with some moments of genius, both of the funny and occasionally thoughtful variety, including my favourite quote; "You don't get the luxury of looking back on the life you blinked away."
I didn't find myself glued to its pages, but I will say that even during my long stints of not being able to read and with 5 books on my "Currently Reading" - this was the one always at the forefront of my mind. A good comedy horror palette cleanser to throw on after reading more intense fare, and definitely an author to keep an eye on in future.
This was such an amazingly fun read! The voice got me hooked right from the beginning. Kasey is so thoroughly done with all the crazy eldritch shit going on that it's impossible not to get a kick out of her sass-filled narration. While the book is absolutely hilarious, it still manages to keep the stakes high with very unsettling fleshy monsters that provide plenty of exciting, fast-paced action scenes. It makes especially good use of the amusement park setting from how the monsters interact with the various structures to the various amusingly named attractions. This is the kind of story that will make you laugh, cry, and cheer at the sheer awesomeness of it all. Can't recommend this highly enough!
This story is a highly entertaining explosion of mindboggling insanity. I loved everything about it. The characters at first seem pretty ‘put-in-box-able’ : friendly, grumpy, evil. Things like that. But as the story progresses, a couple of them turn out to have many layers.
As it turns out, things do can get much worse than just having a shitty day job.
