Broken Fates

Rate this book
Queen. Savior. Sacrifice.

The realms are fracturing—and Vale Tenebris stands at the center of the storm. With chaos spreading across the continent, Vale must harness the magic she barely understands to protect her kingdom and the ones she loves. The bonds with her mates have been tested, and the forces threatening to tear their world apart grow stronger by the day.

As ancient powers stir and secrets come to light, Vale is thrust into a race against time to stop a war that could consume the realms. But with enemies in every shadow and betrayal waiting at every turn, survival will demand more than magic—it will demand everything she has.

The fate of the realms lies in her hands, but at what cost?

** Broken Fates is the final book in the fiery dragon romantasy set in the Severed Flames universe. Expect three dangerously seductive, fiercely protective dragon shifters who will stop at nothing to keep their mate safe. This book contains mature themes. Reader discretion is advised. **

Ok, real I was lost this whole book. The lore and magic got deep and idk if I was just not locked in but I couldn't grasp it for the life of me. They keep looking for her sister but they don't know what her greater purpose is in all this and there is always something watching them, a presence, a power, they don't even know and it got annoying. Literally there was always "a whisper of something, waiting, watching." FMC never got a clear explanation of the magic and power and all that so neither did we and it came to a head here. Everything is always high risk as well, so volatile. She literally dies multiple times lmao it lowkey desensitized me. It was all a bit of a mess.

curses x big battles x groveling

The last book in the series! I’m glad I continued reading for the closure and the full story arc but it’s also helped me decide that I don’t think I’ll be recommending it after all.

The vibes and the spice? All there.
The character development and plot? Not quite.

Warning, brutally honest review coming…
I wanted to like it! I wanted her to have a big development where she was confident and in control and more of an equal with the MMCs but I didn’t find that. Plus, I wish she had done more to be what they needed like she demanded they be for her. It would have been the perfect moment to have her want to bond publicly with Xavier and Kian after we read so many chapters where they were devastated about not having that connection. Instead she left and impulsively went after her sister with no training and no supplies. All this impulsivity always went wrong and her response was always “I didn’t know” or “I didn’t mean to” which got old fast.

Unfortunately not for me.

Sad to say this series ultimately wasn’t for me. The first book had me really hopeful that we’d get a lot of development of the world, characters, and magic system in books 2 and 3 and it never quite got there for me.

In my opinion, there was a lot of showing versus telling and it unfortunately lost my interest. While the mystery plot lines also had a lot of promise, it felt like too much was introduced for this length of a series. I actually wish the author chose to do less and really focus in on sharpening some aspects.

While I did enjoy the first book and recommend others to develop their own opinions of this series, I personally will not be able to recommend it given how mixed I feel about books 2 & 3.

Broken Fates is the thrilling conclusion to the Severed Flames trilogy, and Annie Anderson once again proves why she’s a master of both RH and shifter romance. This series has been an incredible journey, and the final installment delivers the answers we’ve been eagerly waiting for after the cliffhangers in the previous books. The storyline is compelling, with a well-crafted plot, dynamic characters, and impressive character growth. Anderson’s talent shines, and I truly hope she receives the recognition she deserves in the romantasy and fantasy genres.

Great conclusion!

What JAWS did to us in not wanting to swim in the ocean; this series makes you not want to fall asleep in fear of dreaming!

Very happy with how things came together. However, the battles in this last book were drawn out and at times frustrating.

Note to spice lovers: only one scene in this book, a very good one but just one. This series is more plot driven which I enjoyed thoroughly, but usually a "why choose" has a little more spice.

I felt like I was reading the same sentences over and over. No twisted revelations. No bad ass ending. Nyrah was found then taken then found again. Boring. The foursome was not intimate for it to be the only time they all got together. I hated that we didn’t get their dragon forms back until the end of the book. Also Iris and Rune joining again was boring…. I was even confused as to why that scene was set up the way it was.

Don’t even get me started on the same description of The Dreaming over and over…

Something is watching them the whole time and it’s mentioned a million times.
Why are we repeating the same sentences fifty million fucking times.

I LOVED the first book. And to have this as its last book… I can now see why this series is not hyped up. Cause there is no more hype after book 1. I almost didn’t finish. I actually skimmed the last three chapters. It was annoying reading every single persons response to one thing. Kian is this. Xavier is this. Iris is there. Vale is doing something on her own. Also Nyrahs save at the end was stupid…

I hate to leave such a negative review but I just have nothing great to say. But did I mention it was the same sentences over and over again. The characters I loved in the first book… were all just annoying the fuck out of me in Book 3. It stopped being sexy over protective lovers to Whiny, afraid little bitches not wanting to see vale breath wrong.
Rune was probably the only character I consistently enjoyed and Book 3 doesn’t do him justice.

Good riddance series. Won’t be back for a second read.

I have to say this one dragged a little bit for me and some of writing became very repetitive, I felt like I was going in circles. The miscommunication trope is my least favourite and was highly confusing in this context. Our FMC going rogue and being dumb and reckless got a little bit annoying. Being kickass without the foresight to know it’s stupid is just irritating and how the MMCs don’t get more annoyed is beyond me. However it was an enjoyable yet somewhat predictable ending. I didn’t feel the stakes were that high and would have enjoyed more of the villain’s presence and diabolical behaviour to really give some proper emotional damage. But overall a great romance forward fantasy series with witches and dragons and plenty of spice. ☺️👍🏻❤️

As always, Annie has delivered an incredible story, I am obsessed with Vale and her mates! At the start I was a bit confused since it had been so long since I read the last book, but there were minor recaps (in a completely organic way) that helped me remember. This was such an epic finale to an incredible trilogy and I desperately hope Annie writes a follow-up novel for Nyrah and/or Freya after the events of this book.

By this book the language and prose got so repetitive that I was over it. I really like the story but if I had to hear the author say something was "ancient, unknown" one more time. She needs a thesaurus.

Why is she running, she doesn't have to do it alone.
Vale's determined to save those she loves, even if she dies while doing it, again.
At least her mates are not going to let her run again.
But this time she gets far enough that she makes a lifetime savour/friend as well as shows she's not as weak as everyone she comes across thinks.
Vale is about to find out some truths that will just make her stronger, especially with her mates behind her.
She's not going does without a fight.
She's going after her sister, no matter what happens.

As the third book in the Severed Flames trilogy, Broken Fates picks up where the last book ended, plus injects a good amount of angst into the group’s currently fractured status…and as someone who enjoys a healthy dose of angst (with eventual comfort), it plucks my heartstrings. 💞😏💔

Vale’s sister was the only thing she’d cared about—the only thing that kept her going—and Idris had shot her pleas down without even bothering to listen…Xavier had tried to meet her halfway, but there was too much left unsaid between all of us. And me? I’d let her leave. I’d just sat there and watched her go. I didn’t fight for her. I didn’t stand up to Idris. I didn’t even ask her to stay.
-Kian

When a book skips over dealing with issues characters have with another and instead minimizes the issue(s)/skip to make-up sex, it ruins the relationships for me; I want the people and relationships to be cared about, and if there’s a lot of unresolved tension between people, that’s a precursor to a blowup/breakup, not a HEA (assuming that’s the endgame). So when this one started with all the relationships in turmoil, I was both angst-hungry and worried. Fortunately, Anderson has a knack for balancing characters and plot for nice HEAs.

Vale was finally starting to feel like she had people to count on only to have the rug pulled from under her and felt like all of that was a ruse when Idris and Co. basically told her to stay put and trust them to figure everything out, and yeah, they'll find her sister...or maybe she's just the cost of war. The deal they made was that she would help them break the curse in exchange for them helping her save her sister. They didn't give her any reassurance about it after the battle, after she broke the curse. They were understandably mad that she went and did what they told her not to, and ended up, but for a trio of men-her fated mates-infatuated with her, they fell short when it came to talking things out in the war room. (I say they, but Kian didn't say a. single. word., and by 'talking', it was Xavier's w e a k s a u c e 'suggestion', and Idris... Idris turned the thermostat on his mood down so low even Frozone-IYKYK-would be envious.)

Because it wasn't just grief.
It was loss sharpened into a blade. It was rage wrapped in lightning. It was power with nowhere to go—surging, splitting, breaking.
And it would kill her.

-Idris

I've seen some reviews calling Vale annoying or repetitive, but I see it differently; she finds it really difficult to trust people. For years she's seen a lot of people fall/get pushed off a mountain to their own deaths while being forced to walk the same route that could so easily end her or her sister's lives. Yeah, I'd end up with a deathly fear of heights and be traumatized, too. Not to mention she lived with her head on a swivel and slept with one eye open to feel some modicum of safety. So if it's hard for Vale to trust someone to begin with, it would definitely be more arduous-if not impossible-for someone to get her trust again, especially as she's spent years around others who would easily sacrifice her for the smallest benefit to themselves. The only way Vale probably stayed sane all those years at the mountain was by fixating on her sister Nyrah (nickname spoiler:) and how to eventually get them out and away from the mountain. If she didn't have someone else to focus on, she would have to focus on herself and notably, life hadn't been the kindest to her. If you lost your focus in life, the reason for everything you do...what do you do without it?

"Hate to break it to you, but Fate doesn't give out riches and gold for surviving. In my experience, that only gets more sh*t shoveled your way."
-Vale

The parallels drawn between Idris and his brother and Vale and her sister were woven throughout the entire book. One of the men betrayed his brother, and one of the women had her sister, her only family, taken from her. Sometimes being selfless for one person is viewed as being self-ish by others. Having his powers separated by a sibling and a loved one, there was little doubt that Idris would have some trust issues. The fact that he eventually understood why Vale did what she did and not only didn't push her away, but let her decide if/when to come back to him showed character growth. (I mean, he also had half his identity and power striped from him by someone else he loved.) Knowing that he messed up with Vale and he needed to prove himself to her, the only way he could really do that was by vowing to protect the person she cared for the most-her sister-in order to get himself out of the metaphorical sinkhole he threw himself in.

“You’d think after all that, we’d at least get a dramatic sky split or something,” he muttered. “You know, a little divine intervention, a whisper of Fate saying, ‘Congrats, you survived. Have a cookie.’”
-Kian

…this particularly made me chuckle later on, seeing as Even though I was missing shifter action-I understood why there was less than previous books, with their issues needing more hands-on and less…talons-on attention-I appreciated the journey each character had to take in order to rebuild trust and respect with each other. The character growth that resulted because of it played a big part in the book, even if some took a bit longer to get there than others.

All in all, Anderson performs an impressive balancing act between Vale and Idris, Kian, & Xavier’s differing opinions on Vale’s actions from the end of book 2 through the start of book 3, utilizing the first-person POV rotation to show us how their decisions hurt each of them in various ways. It’s reflective of real life, where things don’t just get magically fixed with an easy apology, but with real, genuine struggle to understand where each person is coming from and what each partner needs to move forward in the relationship.

While I'm sad that it's the end of Vale, Kian, Xavier, & Idris' story, Severed Flames forced them to face the reality of their relationships, brought the loose ends together, and even left a bit of potential for side characters to move around in their own space, if that were to happen. (Make it happen, please! I need more Freya!) On the bright side, at least when I read the series again, I don't have to wait for another book to find out what happens next.

I received a copy of the book in exchange for my honest review.

BTW I got access to an exclusive bonus chapter/epilogue for being an email subscriber, and let me tell you, THAT would have been an even better epilogue to wrap up the series. *swoon*

This is book three of the Severed Flames series and the finale ratches up a notch after Vale Tenebris died for Idris, the king, in an effort to get his dragon Rune reconnected with him and break the curse the dark witch Zamarra placed on him hundreds of years ago, with the help of his jealous brother Arden. He has forced Vale to marry him, to return magic to his kingdom, even though she is also bonded with his two most trusted men, Kian and Xavier. Him turning his back on her after her dying in their arms just because he struggles to process emotions, leads to her leaving all three of her mates in an effort to find and save her younger sister, Nyrah. Zamarra had been imprisoned within the Dreaming but has steadily been growing stronger and is close to breaking out, using people like her sister, draining their energy to gain power for herself. Vale has escaped the castle just days after the Girovian mages brought the battle there and Idris and his generals are too busy preparing for whatever next step they will need, to protect the castle and their people from the mages, with Idris refusing to listen to her wish to find her sister, something he had promised to help her with if she married him. So now, she is going it alone, as she did before she found her mates, no matter how painful it might be. When Kian and Xavier realise their mate bond has almost disappeared, they realise she has left to do as she said she would, all alone and at the mercy of any she comes across. They aren’t happy to find out Idris already knew this and had done nothing! They leave their kingdom in the protection of vampire Freya, even though it is at the brink of civil war, some wanting revenge against Girovia, the others against Vale being allowed to become Queen.

The three mates cannot use their dragon sides, even though speed is needed, as the mages can down their dragons in mid-flight, so they have to use horses, like Vale did. Vale thought Rune was dead when she couldn’t merge him with Idris, dying before she could complete the ritual, but he is locked in the Dreaming and needs her to find him and finish what she started! Vale must find out the meaning behind her own true identity and the reason why she was placed in this realm and what her connection to the Dreaming really is. Zamarra is toying with her from within her prison, locked there by the sacrifice of all the Luxa witches that came before Vale. If Zamarra breaks free, she will rip apart all of the realms to get her revenge and regain the power she has lost. She has her claws into Nyrah and if they don’t break her connection soon, the sister she knew will cease to exist! Arden baits Idris to seek his vengeance, but thankfully, he holds out for Nyrah and ensures she stays asleep so Zamarra can’t hurt her in the Dreaming. A final battle will take place in the sanctuary where Zamarra was first imprisoned, as Vale finally figures out that the Dreaming is part of who she is and Zamarra was only able to partly control it, distorting it’s magic for her own purposes. She tries pulling the magic from Vale, but Vale has the blood of the First and is a true part of the Dreaming unlike Zamarra. The Dreaming will finally rid itself of the interloper and it will take all of them to help save Nyrah from meeting the same end! A peace will finally be made within their realm as Idris and Vane, as well as the others, show that their kingdom and king is whole once more and their foes have no chance of simply taking what was never theirs! Now Vale and her mates can start their own story, on their terms, and finally start living without fear or war. A brave FMC who will strive to do what is right, even if it ends in her losing her own life, with or without the mates she was forced to embrace in the beginning.

I’m still emotionally wrecked from this book—in the best way possible. Broken Fates by Annie Anderson didn’t just continue Vale’s journey… it tore through my heart, rebuilt it with fire and magic, and left me breathless in the ashes.

This series has owned me since page one, but this installment? This is where everything hits. The stakes are higher, the betrayals cut deeper, and the emotional payoff is just devastatingly beautiful. Vale isn’t just a queen—she’s a warrior, a survivor, and a woman fiercely trying to hold it all together while the world unravels around her. And gods, I felt every ounce of her struggle.

Watching her grapple with the magic she still doesn’t fully control, the weight of being a savior no one really prepared her to be, and the pain of trust fraying with the men she loves—it was raw, real, and achingly powerful. Her strength doesn’t come from flawless power. It comes from choosing to keep going, even when the cost feels impossible.

And let’s talk about those mates? Whew. The tension, the heartbreak, the need between them all? It’s not just romantic—it’s soul-deep. These aren’t cookie-cutter love interests. They’re flawed, messy, and sometimes make choices that hurt—but that’s what makes their bond with Vale so compelling. It’s a love story forged in fire and tested by war, and I’m here for every moment of it.

The magic system? Expanding in terrifying, gorgeous ways. The enemies? More dangerous and insidious than ever. And the twists? Let’s just say I gasped more than once. Annie Anderson builds a world that feels vast and intimate all at once, full of shadowy corners and desperate hope.

But what got me most was the theme of sacrifice. Vale has to ask herself what she’s willing to give—her power, her heart, her life—and the answers are never simple. I felt that internal war in my bones. This book doesn’t hold back, and I wouldn’t want it to.

Broken Fates is brutal and beautiful and utterly unforgettable. If you’ve ever loved a heroine who rises not because she’s invincible, but because she refuses to fall without a fight—then Vale Tenebris is your girl. And her fate? Will stay with me for a long, long time.

This wasn’t just a book. It was a reckoning. And I’d follow Vale into the flames again and again.

Normally I do these posts with a “spoiler free” lead in and a “spoiler warning” I am not going to talk much about the plot so it isnt really a spoiler situation…it should be safe to read even if you haven’t read the books

So to begin it is the 3rd and Final book in the Severed Flames series by Annie Anderson @annieande

And I am going to say I am surprised I don’t see MORE talk about Annie Anderson from the book bloggers because she has some great books… I have bought all of mine direct from the author’s website but they Are available on Amazon. I think if you want the beautiful special editions like I have you should head to her site https://annieandersonstore.com/collec...

I loved the whole series, world building, fantasy, SPICY Spice, why choose, reverse harem, fated mates, Dragon shifters, spice with multiple partners at the same time… GORGEOUS special editions…check out the pics…

I will say, while I do not read “for the spice”, I read for the story and am comfortable with the spice, the previous 2 books were more frequently spicy than the third book, which did feel a little lacking in the frequency dept. there were some ‘almost spicy’ moments that were interrupted and overall I felt like it could have used an additional spicy scene at the end. I mean ONE scene in the whole book and it was in the middle. I am all for the world building and storyline, but the intimacy was integral to their bond and so it just felt a little missing…

ok i lied, plot discussion coming (not super spoilery but still if you havent read the books this is your warning maybe to stop)

ok so my only plot contention… Talek… so this is a minor thing, but when Talek joined to help there was discussion about whether or not to trust him, and what his motivation was, and that never really got handled or wrapped it just moved on with him helping like a 5th wheel, we just never got back around to that plot point.

And I am seriously questioning why the only intimate moment was at just past the half way point…. considering that their bond was expressed so much through intimacy in the first two books…

still loved the story, still will recommend it, will def read it again, and my goodness the special editions are GORGEOUS…

I had been waiting impatiently for months to read Broken Fates as I felt so enveloped by the first two books in the series, so I devoured this book in a single day when the time finally came. If you haven't read any of the Severed Flames series, then I highly recommend you do. Do you love dragons and dragon-shifters? How about RH with epic fantasy vibes? If so then this series is definitely for you. If you haven't read any of Annie's books then there are quite a few amazing series out there waiting for you.

We start this book out exactly where we left things on the cliffhanger after an epic battle and on the brink of a full on war. Vale leaves her mates and ventures out on her own, but is she a strong enough FMC to succeed without the help of those closest to her? Will she fail in the end and it would all be for nothing? Will her mates come to her rescue in the end and they all end up with an HEA? Guess you'll need to read this final installment to find out.

This book will have you on the edge of your seat from the very start. There's battles and adventure all throughout that cause multiple moments where your heart will beat a little faster with concern over the possibility of losing one of our beloved characters. There's moments where your heart might break a little bit and tears might fall.

If you're ready to fly into battle with Vale and her mates, then buy this book and get lost in the fantasy of the Severed Flames Series. And for those of you who love bonus chapters and amazing epilogues, make sure you subscribe to her newsletters to get email links for bonus chapters. The bonus chapter for Broken Fates is an amazing epilogue for the entire series and it will bring joy to your heart after the emotional rollercoaster of reading this series.

Happy Reading Y'all

The redundancy in this book is actually wild. I am honestly not even sure if the story would rank this low if it weren't for the sheer amount of redundancy. Did I mention it was redundant? There's always "something". something ancient, something deep, something buried, something no one else can hear.. Here are the examples from one... I repeat - one - chapter of this book:

-like reaching for something buried
-maybe it was something worse.
-something's here
-something slithered down my spine
-something shifted in the walls
-listening to something none of us could hear
-like something deep within the stone walls was inhaling, exhaling
-There was something wrong with his expression
-you should have said something
-like he was watching something move
-the one where we had all felt something watching
-as if something buried deep inside the sanctuary walls had just woken up
-then something moved
-as if something deep within the rock was drinking it in
-listening to something none of us could hear (again...)
-something else was layered beneath it
-shifting the world into something impossible
-something ugly and sharp coiled in my chest
-something sank into my skull
-something flickered in Nyrah's expression
-warping the air itself into something that crawled beneath my skin
-bracing for something to rip her away
-something inside me eased
-like something vast and ancient was breathing just beneath the surface (again...)
-something like desperation
-shifting between solid stone and something else.. Something living (a two-for there! 😂)
-something massive, watching
-his storm-grey eyes locking onto something none of us could see
Then, golden eyes, golden eyes, golden eyes!

AHHHHHHHH!!! It is driving me nuts just thinking about it!! Boost your vocabulary, dear author. Boost your vocabulary.

After Vale leaves Idris, Kian, and Xavier, she goes off to find Nyrah herself. The boys really left things on a sour note in the last book, Kian realizes she’s missing and that they are the reason she felt the need to go off alone. Xavier is upset that she didn’t talk to him about her feelings first and now she just left him. Idris is hard to read… regardless, they go off in search of her and find bodies along her trail. Girovian mages. While they’re proud she was powerful enough to take him out, they need to get her out of danger.

**** Spoilers!! ****

Vale is afraid to sleep and allow Zamarra to torment her in The Dreaming but exhaustion wins. Only it’s not Zamarra waiting for her… it’s Rune!!! He tells Vale how she failed at merging him with Idris because she died before she could transfer the power. So Rune is stuck in The Dreaming and it’s trying to swallow him up. Vale needs to figure out a way to complete the ritual.

The boys finally find Vale and they hash it out. Their frayed bond reforged, they decide to go get Nyrah. To face Idris’s brother and Zamarra. The Dreaming keeps warning Vale of what Nyrah is going through. Lirael tells Vale to return to the book. The one of her family history with the missing pages.

Talek (the fae male from Idris’s council) finds them and warns them that Vale has a job to do here. He can hear the past Luxa and they keep whispering to and guiding him. He manages to rip the barrier open and allow the Luxa to show themselves and speak to Vale. They tell her that Lirael is her mother and only Vale can save this realm and bring balance. Vale’s parents prayed to Lirael to save them so she gifted them with a baby who will right the wrongs. One made from the very fibers of The Dreaming, who may command it.

The boys manage to get Nyrah to safety and Briar helps to heal her. However the dreaming claims them all and Vale has to go in alone. Vale faces Zamarra and manages to get Nyrah out from her grasp. The Dreaming listens to Vale and helps to destroy Zamarra. Lirael appears and explains that she was only ever meant to protect The Dreaming. Vale was born from it. One and the same. She was made to wield it.

Then they all live happily ever after. In the bonus chapter, they have a crowning ceremony where Vale and Idris recognize Kian and Xavier not as just Vale’s mates but as leaders and protectors of the realm. They shall have 4 rulers instead of 2. How perfect and redeeming to the initial wedding scene.

BROKEN FATES is the final book in the Severed Flames trilogy and gives a very satisfying conclusion to Vale's story.

Beginning from where Stolen Embers finished, Vale is on her own and doing everything in her power to rescue and protect her sister. Where are her dragons, I hear you ask? Well, they're doing their own thing.

All three of these books are full of spice and battles, and sometimes those things combine - I'm looking at you, Selene - and this one is no different. Everything that has happened has been building up to this book and it will take you on a rollercoaster ride as your emotions go through all the motions!

Now, a possible unpopular opinion - I really had had enough of the boys at the beginning of this one, Idris especially. Kian was and always will be my favourite and his self-realisation here only confirms that, although it took him long enough! And after they sort it out, they STILL think Vale is soft and fragile, not trusting in her or her abilities. I'm surprised I have any teeth left, I ground them that much!

Anyway, this story is completely outstanding from beginning to end and I have loved spending time in their world. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED by me, just in case you were wondering.

With a title like Broken Fates, things could go either way. When I started this book, I was a little worried about how Vale and the guys left things. It wasn't good, and the world has gone to hell. But that's not what I needed to worry about.

I didn't have to wait too long for the confrontation between Vale and her guys; it was brutal but needed to happen. There were a lot of emotions, but they worked it out. What I should've been more concerned with was what was happening. It's a nightmare come to life. Literally. There was an unexpected creep factor, but I didn’t hate it. There was a dreamlike quality, and it was hard to tell what was real. I was on edge waiting for the next horrible thing to happen because it was going to happen, and it wasn’t just Zamarra and Arden that Vale and the others had to worry about.

Talk about tension; there was a fair amount, not just from the characters, but the plot held a fair amount as well, and when the plot twist was revealed, I lost my freaking mind. It was so good. Once we hit those final chapters, things happened pretty quick. The final battle was epic; however, in my opinion, not nearly enough people got what was coming to them.

Wow! Broken Fates was outstanding! It was the perfect conclusion to a fantastic series. I am not ready to leave this world, but I guess I have to go. Vale, her guys, and the rest will be missed.

So I’ve finished the series and I can say I’m happy I read this series. I did notice some of the same lines repeating themselves over and over. It felt like the author was needing to meet a certain word count per chapter. But that didn’t take away from the story. Now depending on your imagination some of the battle scenes were tough to imagine, but they were usually swiftly handled. The Dreaming and Luxa were new and something I had never really read about. So I enjoyed how the author brought this new world to life. I still love Vale and I find her even more awesome at the end of this series. I loved that she was able to have that closure on who she was and where she came from. She truly is a Queen! Nyrah finally made an appearance but I wish the author would have used her more. I would have enjoyed seeing her come through the Dreaming. Or be able to give Vale some insight. I mean anything besides silence. I had my suspicions that we might see a battle that would tear our hearts out at the end but sadly it was basic and over pretty quickly. Now the spice in this last book was tempered; but MMMF is a wayyyyy new read for me. Hahahaha! Not my cup of tea but also didn’t bother me.

Broken Fates delivers a powerful and satisfying conclusion to the series. Annie Anderson wraps up the story with the perfect balance of high stakes, emotional depth, and character growth. This final installment is everything fans of Ruined Wings and Stolen Embers could hope for and more.

The protagonist’s journey comes full circle in a way that feels both earned and deeply moving. Her strength and resilience shine brightest here, even as she faces impossible choices and heartbreaking losses. The relationships remain complex and authentic, with moments that truly tug at the heart.

The worldbuilding is richer than ever, and the tension is palpable from start to finish. Anderson’s writing remains sharp and immersive, pulling you into every twist and turn. The pacing is perfect, balancing intense action with quieter, reflective moments that give the story real weight.

Broken Fates is a fitting end to a series that blends dark fantasy, romance, and raw emotion so seamlessly. It’s a journey that stays with you long after the last page is turned. Highly recommended for readers who love characters who fight for their own destinies, no matter the cost.

What a journey. Vale is back with her mates in the conclusion to the Severed Flames trilogy and it was a journey. Picking up where Stolen Embers left off, we have Vale traveling alone; still on her mission to save her sister. Her bond between Xavier, Kian and Idris is strained after the argument they had in book 2 and since Vale felt they did not trust her; she chooses to put her trust in herself and set out to finish what she started.

Once Xavier, Kian and Idiris understand where they went wrong and why their bond is fragile almost nonexistent, they set out to find their mate and move heaven and hell in helping her right the wrongs that occurred when she broke their curse as well as finding her sister before its too late.

A fitting in to this long journey. Not long in terms of books but long in terms of emotion tensions and Vale, Xavier, Kian and Idris all finally getting on the same page and working together to not only save their kingdom, Vale's sister but also their fractured bond.

Let me start by saying I was so excited for the conclusion of this trilogy. I love the why choose aspect and how amazing all the characters are but I am so frustrated with this.

Maybe it’s because I have read so many more books in between the 2nd and 3rd and I hate to be the one that says “this is poorly written” like I a pro editor - but seriously… UGH!

If I have to read the phrase “Too still. Too quiet” or “it was waiting. Watching” again ever it will be too soon! Talk about repetitive. Gods. I swear half the book is about characters listing off insanely fine detail about their surroundings or the smell of the room but the “barely notice it”. What?! How can you register a smell as particular as bergamot and barely notice it!

This plot is epic.

The characters are fantastic, the spice is next level, dragon shifters, magic system…all of it’s great, but come on! I almost DNF’d so many times out of pure frustration from reading the same thing over and over.

Honestly glad it’s over 😭

This series is too short. And the first two books are more so. I somehow binge-read this series in three days.

Here's what I liked and dislikes. Minor spoilers ahead.

Thought I would try to read this one because it’s so short but jeesh.

The emotions make no sense. Vale is condemned for ending a curse when that was her sole purpose for being brought to the king. The emotional response to everything going on makes no sense, and no one has learned how to communicate at all.

Vale stomping across the woods by herself makes no sense. She is completely incompetent in survival. Her stealing a horse and being able to saddle it is ludicrous.

The horse chase seen made no sense. It’s literally impossible. Her stumbling upon a house that she pulled a horse into and was able to sleep made NO SENSE. How did a chair blocking a door make her immune to being found? Why did the pursuers not check the house?

As soon as she left the house, the chase randomly resumes? And also she randomly makes it to the temple she’s been dreaming about despite being hopelessly lost and having no navigational ability?

The book makes no sense.

Maybe it’s me, maybe I’m the problem, but I was so lost 99% of the time reading this. I felt like the author said “here, d*mn” to her publisher & the publisher just said “bet”

These characters jumped around the continent so much it gave me whiplash. So much was going on and nobody, including me, had even an idea of a plan to follow. They just jumped around putting out fires the whole book. How can a king, the hand of the king, and a general NEVER have a plan…. but they always say they ‘need’ one, but never make one. Not even a tiny one. And Vale is just over her dying and reviving every 2 seconds.

Don’t even get me started on the Dreaming. All of a sudden it’s a transportation device?? That also conjures monsters and swords of light?? That can also tear people apart???

I feel like the major problem with this book is that it read like a story being retold to me, but they were leaving out vital information that would make any of it make a lick of sense.
