Jeyna was always a hothead. Never quite knowing when he should keep his nose clean. Never quite caring either way. Growing up in an orphanage meant growing tough, or growing tougher and despite only reaching a towering five feet tall. Jeyna never let that stop him from doing what he thought best.
So, sitting on a stool at the bar of his favorite tavern, Jeyna found himself coming to the aid of a distressed serving girl. Only to discover in the aftermath that her attackers were freshly minted nobles. Earning himself a one-way ticket to the front lines of yet another border war.
Jeyna had never met Ymry of the White Flame. The great elder dragon that ruled the kingdom of Handelaar. Nor had he met Kiandonirth of the Void. The great black, elder dragon who ruled over Ijverig, the kingdom of dwarves. Most hadn’t. And most never would. If you were lucky, you wouldn’t meet their underlings either. The great scaled beasts, that ruled over pockets of land in the elders stead.
Jeyna wasn’t so lucky. Whether on the human side, or the dwarf side, it didn’t matter. The men burned, the forest burned, the land burned and with bound hands, Jeyna had no choice but to flee for his life. Made all the more different when something sparked inside him.
Something burning. Something powerful. Something completely uncomprehensible to the man named Jeyna.
Something forbidden, on this world.
And it all comes crashing down, when a matronly, golden voice enters his head. Instructing him to head south. Towards the kingdom Woestenij, and Zolrin of the Bane. The elder of orcs and battle.
With an exiled dwarf, a half elf and a cranky dryad, Jeyna learns what it means to be a dragon. Because this world isn’t quite ready for him. And Jeyna’s never been one to care.
Reading the blurb I suapected the MC would be more a hot-head than a thinking caring individual. I wasn't in the mood for yet another mc that thinks it's uncool to care. There's a reason why the the heroic/caring/selfless MC pops up so much.
Luckily this mc, while being a bit of a hot-head, also has a heart. Gotta love the MC that protects the weak. I did find myself almost pulling my hair out a couple of times for his lack of tactical insight but, I still really enjoyed the novel overall. I mean, not every character can or should have the same strengths.
5/5 overall 4/5 characters (This is a somewhat fast paced novel despite not feeling rushed; which I appreciate. But the characters only have so much chance to be explored. Especially at a more natural pace of character revelation. I mean, how well do you know someone after spending a week together? Decent but not great. Despite that, what we get is great and feels natural enough to start to feel for them.) 3/5 world building (Not much there. What is there works and is decent) 4.5/5 Powers (lots of fun and well implemented, despite looking a bit like another book's) 3.8/5 Politics/drama/morality (our mc had to be held back a few times which bugged me a couple of those times but, it's practically in his character sheet so... my opinion's my opinion. Be quiet.) -/5 Romance (I'm not sure. Certain facets I really liked and in others it seemed possibly lacking. For a harem story it certainly fills the punch card well. It's not the most heart filling harem I've read though. The characters do seem present and have some dimension. But they don't really have a lot of time and chances to grow closer. This is my review and I want to so I'm leaving it blank.)
Despite these scores seeming a bit low for a 5/5, I really enjoyed the book. I plan to read more in the series. I see great potential for a fun and semi-cozy story. If it becomes more busy I'll probably still mostly like it. We shall see. You should too. LOL.
Decent book one to a new series. The story was on rails and you absolutely knew what was coming. There is no nuance to it you can tell what will happen from the first page but that's not a bad thing. The editing needs some work lots of missed words and misspelled words.
It was OK; felt rather like a checklist by the end and none of the characters really stood out. Nothing hugely wrong with it but I don’t think I’ll read another.
