The Arcana Trials: A Game of Fate and Blood

Rate this book
Before Aetheria was a land of covens and ley lines, it was ruled by Gods. Not the benevolent kind that bestowed blessings, but fickle, all-powerful entities who toyed with fate itself. They were known as The Arcana, celestial beings who governed the forces of magic and destiny. They were worshiped, feared, and eventually betrayed. Legend says that centuries ago, a witch, the first seer, dared to defy the Gods. She sought to steal their power, to confine their divine will within a form that mortals could control. Through forbidden alchemy and sacrificial magic, she forged The Arcana Deck. Twenty-two cards, each trapping a God into its painted surface. But Gods don't suffer imprisonment lightly...

The moment the first seer bound The Arcana, she doomed all witches to the trials. The Arcana could not escape their cage, but they could feed. Every century, the Arcana awakens—and twenty-two witches are chosen as its players. To win is to claim unimaginable power. To lose is to die. Selene Ravenspire never asked to be part of the game. When the Deck chooses her, she becomes tethered to Ezra Vale, who was imprisoned within the cards and recently escaped five years ago. His power is intoxicating. His obsession is dangerous. And he tempts Selene towards a destiny darker than she ever feared. As rival covens clash, deadly trials claim their players, and the long-lost twenty-third card stirs, Selene must decide whether to destroy the Arcana Deck forever—or surrender to it. Because gods do not stay caged, and Ezra Vale will not let her go.

🌶️🌶️ moderate spice with some steamy yearning
This is a captivating and ensnaring witch/tarot card based book. You do not need to have knowledge of tarots card to enjoy this book. I would put this book in the fantasy romance category. It is a standalone book.
The energy and movement of the characters and scenes starts right away and carries throughout the book.

The plot is split between the trials and the romance aspect which beautifully intertwine and overall flows smoothly and quickly.
The trials were some of my favorite parts especially the Empress card and the Lovers card. These parts gave Hunger Game vibes. The imagery painted by the authors words transports you into the book.
The romance aspect is a little hard to describe without giving major spoilers away, but there is a small love triangle and enemies to lover and a past lovers finally reunited.

There are unexpected twists and turns with characters that keep you on your toes and guessing what will happen next.

Selene the FMC is witch with a power that is hard to control and she has been surpressing her entire life. Her character faces many different challenges and heartbreak that lead her into blooming into such a strong character and learning how to control the power within her.

Ezra the MMC seems harsh and cruel but that is a farce to protect his heart because his love is a weakness that threatens to destroy the most important thing in his life…. Her. He has shadow magic with a plethora of tragic secrets and stories that helps Selene bloom into the strong woman at the end of the book. He will burn down the world and anyone in the path of his love including himself.

Lucien aka Firefly (iykyk) who is a secondary character yet plays a major part in several scenes and has one of the most touching moments in the book (legit made me tear up)

There is a HEA and the author does a wonderful job in the epilogue giving the main characters the perfect ending and showing that love can overcome all.

I really enjoyed this book and thought it was a different concept from a lot of the other books I have read recently. There were many times I could not put the book down because I had to find out what happened next.
Thank you for the opportunity to do an ARC read.

✨️ARC✨️
From the moment I opened this book, I was completely pulled into its world. The concept of the Arcana Trials, witches chosen every century by a living deck of cards, bound to deadly, magical trials was unlike anything I’ve read before. The story was rich, different, and had an immediate hook that never let go. I couldn’t stop turning the pages.

One of the strongest aspects of the book was its originality. The way the Major Arcana were woven into the lore of the world, the power dynamics of the Covens, and the stakes of the trials kept me on edge. I loved the haunting idea that the deck itself chooses its victims and the mystery of how and why was so compelling.

That said, I really wish the book had been longer. There were moments where I found myself needing more detail, not just to build the world more fully, but to help the story flow better. Some key things weren’t explained clearly, and I was left with a lot of questions. For example: Why did the gods have to be trapped in the deck? Why was that the only option? What was the deal with the book Ezra gave Selene, the one she could never read? It felt like there were hints of something just out of reach. I wanted more backstory, more explanation, and a deeper dive into the mechanics of the world.

Still, the character work was really compelling. I loved Ezra’s transformation over the course of the story. He was kind of the worst at first manipulative, mysterious, and hard to trust, but by the end, he absolutely won me over.
That quote: “If I crawl, it will be to her. If I beg, it will be for her. Not even eternity could make me forget her name.”
Sigh. Swoon. Absolutely unforgettable.

The world of Aetheria is dark and dangerous, and the deck is a character in its own right, terrifying, beautiful, and full of secrets. The idea that the witches are claimed by the deck rather than volunteering added so much tension, and the stakes were sky-high from beginning to end.

All in all, this book was a wild ride ,magical, deadly, and utterly addictive. I just wish it had taken a little more time to unpack its mythology and give us a few more answers. Still, I’m desperate for a sequel, or at least a companion novella that fills in the gaps! If the next book dives deeper into the gods, the deck, and Ezra’s past... I’m all in.

Thank you, Juniper Blaire and BookFunnel, for the opportunity to read and review this magical book.

I’m giving The Arcana Trials a 3.8 stars. I absolutely adore books centered around witchcraft and dark themes. This book is undoubtedly quite dark. The ambiance was captivating, and the story was well-written! I thoroughly enjoyed the unexpected twists and turns Juniper crafted, which were challenging to predict. The characters were well-developed, and I found myself thoroughly enjoying every aspect of them. The writing was vivid and imaginative.

The romance in this book was simply incredible and my favorite part. Ezra is so dreamy, and Selene is just amazing. I did also enjoy Lucian, but he made several mistakes that broke my heart.

The best line in any book I’ve ever read:

“If I crawl, it will be to her. If I beg, it will be for her. Not even eternity could make me forget her name.”

I swear I was screaming when I read this line. It was simply too good.

Now, let’s discuss the aspects that I found challenging. I believe there’s a need for greater depth in the story because certain parts left me perplexed. It took me a while to comprehend that Ezra was the death god, initially mistaking him for a mortal who had become trapped in the deck. The explanation wasn’t particularly clear. Additionally, I struggled to understand Maelion’s character. I got that he had been transformed into a bird, but why? The explanation was brief, and I couldn’t fully grasp it. Furthermore, the book in her mother’s study remained a mystery. Did she discover its contents? Why was it significant?

Overall, I enjoyed The Arcana Trials. I believe it was a solid book. It maintained my interest throughout and prevented me from putting it down once the story truly began. However, I do believe that adding more depth to the story was necessary. I found myself frequently confused and yearned for more world-building and information. There wasn’t much character interaction beyond the interactions of about four individuals throughout the entire story, despite the fact that the character was surrounded by people. I regret that we didn’t get to meet many of the other witches participating in the trials or even her mother.

I want to finish this review by saying a huge thank you to Juniper Blaire for sending me this ARC. I enjoyed it so so much and I hope to read more of her work in the future.

Are you looking for a good witchy book for the spooky season? 🧙🏻‍♀️🔮✨
THIS BOOK IS IT!!

🔮Tropes 🔮
•witches
•magic
•trials
•enemies to lovers
•fighting for survival
•slight love triangle

The chosen witches have to complete trials. The tarot deck itself chooses the players carving them with the mark of their Arcana. Where the marked witches are doomed once their names are spoken.

Once you’re called there is no escape, 22 names will be picked and the trials will begin, starting at dawn the following day.

“Cursed are whose names are called for the Arcana, for fate has already carved their souls into the bones of eternity, and the hands that shuffle their destiny are not their own”

The plot is THICK, the tension is HEAVY, and the trials are DEADLY. I absolutely loved this, it’s a very slow burn. Enemies to lovers and absolutely everything you want in a romantacy!

This story was BEAUTIFULLY laid out and written, this story has a soul, and tells the tale of two people fighting to survive and learning the truth.

I really enjoyed how unique and interesting this book was. The story revolves around a deck of cards that the First Seer trapped gods into. The moment they were trapped a curse was formed. Every 100 years the Arcana Trials occur where witches are summoned to compete in deadly trials with only 1 winner emerging.

The longing and tension had me on the edge of my seat. I’m a sucker for love triangle that involves a dark MMC that says, “she’s mine.”

This ended up being a 4 star read for me instead of 5 because I felt the second half of the book just wasn’t as good as the first half and I started losing some interest.

Initial thoughts before reading: I really enjoyed the added resources at the beginning of the novel, it helped flesh out the story a bit more in advance without taking up too much of the overall story. It helped with world-building and character development when you know some of the history and allows the reader to have an understanding going forward what kind of story you are going to be immersed in. The list of past 'players', both winners and loser, as well as the consequences they face gives you and idea of how fickle and merciless the Arcana can be.

Selene - our FMC - is an independent, almost loner type who is swept up in the games with our moody, intense MMC, Ezra. The other characters we meet along the way vary, from cutthroat & conniving, to strategic & secretive. You see both characters grow from their initial selves, into a formidable duo that pose a threat. The machinations going on outside of the Trials adds a level of depth that there's more to the story than meets the eye.

Although we don't get a detailed explanation of each Trial, I think that was for the best as it would have been difficult to write a chapter for each without detracting from the other events going on. The glimpses we do get at what a Trial could consist of are action-packed, tense and well written. You see the 'enemies-to-lovers' element develop throughout the story, as well as the history of the Arcana and how it is tied to Selene and Ezra.

Overall I thoroughly enjoyed this read. The story is packed with action from the onset and this adds to the tension you already feel after the initial events that occur. Although the book itself isn't incredibly long, a lot takes place and there is a lot to absorb. The story was well-paced and high octane with elements of romance and a sprinkling of spice. The ending was well-rounded and thought out and I'd love to read stories from other witches or covens as the world was so well built and the characters lovable!

The Arcana Trials: A Game of Fate and Blood by Juniper Blaire

4.5/5 stars

This book… I swear I devoured it. I was honoured to have been given the opportunity to read The Arcana Trials written by Juniper Blaire. Witches - check, gods - check, trials- check, shadow daddy… CHECK.

The way Juniper was able to bring to life this book with her ideas took me on a journey and I won’t lie, I was sad it was over but I liked the way it wrapped up the ending. You weren’t left on a cliff hanger wondering what happened next.

The Arcana were celestial beings that toyed with fate for their own enjoyment, who were worshipped, feared and eventually betrayed. Legend said that a witch, the first seer sought to confine the gods, to be able to put them in a form that the mortals could control and through alchemy and magic she forged the Arcana Deck - Twenty-Two cards, each to trap a god. But things didn’t go exactly the way she’d hoped and thus, while successfully trapping them, she condemned all witches to the trails. Every century the Arcana opens and twenty-two witches are chosen as its players.

Selene Ravenspire, daughter of the High Priestess of the Grimrose coven is chosen along side Ezra Vale. Whom of which was imprisoned within the cards, until he managed to escape them 5 years prior. His obsession is dangerous, his power intoxicating and Selene cannot deny the attraction and chemistry between them. It is up to Selene to survive the trials and decide if she should surrender to the Deck… or to find a way to destroy it. Either way gods do not stay caged and Ezra will not let Selene go… not once he has her.

🌶

I have been in a MAJOR reading slump for a few months now, and this book was just what I needed to pull me out. As a witchy girly who loves all things Tarot, the theming of this novel really drew me in. It was a super easy read, and the plot was really easy to follow and kept me captivated throughout.

Each card in the Major Arcana housed a trapped God, and witches chosen by the deck are forced to face deadly trials until only one remains. I am a sucker for deadly trials, and they were executed extremely well in this book. It was super interesting getting to see what each trial would be, and I loved seeing how the bond between our main characters got them through it.

Our MMC Ezra is a brooding shadow daddy with a few secrets that get revealed later on in the book. The relationship between him and our FMC Selene definitely starts out as hatred and slowly develops into lovers. It was definitely a slow burn, so was super satisfying when they finally got together. There was a tiny bit of spice, but only in one really small scene.

Overall I really enjoy this book and the author's writing style. Would definitely recommend if you're looking for a fun and captivating fantasy standalone :)

This story took my breath away. Truly magical world building not all crammed at the beginning but nuggets provided throughout. Juniper has a way of capturing you and keeping a hold from beginning to end!

The Arcana Trials follows a world where Tarot cards hold the Gods captive to ensure the Covens are not destroyed entirely from their cruelty and pain they enforce. Every century the Deck is pulled and witches from each of the four Covens are chosen for the trails the Gods put in front of them based on the Tarot cards that selected the names.

Selene has been preparing herself for years, but nothing could prepare her for the God of Death who escaped the Deck years prior. Both feared and captivating Ezra must take part in the Trials set in front of him and attempt to break the cycle the other Gods set forth.

Thank you to the author for giving me access to this book.

While the premise is really intriguing and the book is under 400 pages, I found I could not invest in reading the book and DNF. I cannot rate a DNF.

I really don't care to comment to author's how to write their story because I'm a firm believer that it is their story to tell, their vision, but this needs some developmental editing for the beginning of the book. All of my problems, the reason I DNF this book was the beginning structure and that's why I'm addressing this.

One of the major elements that diverted my interest was the initial structure: 1- EIGHT pages of introductory world building of the magic system/history of the trials AND 2-the THREE images listing THIRTY FOUR characters that I'm assuming are supposed to be relevant to the story, AND 3- a prologue.

That took me out from the start. I was fatigued before even starting the first chapter.

I did get several chapters in. But I kept thinking about that introduction and the 34 characters and could not conceive how this story was going to play out introducing that many characters, deal with the backstory, and tell the main character stories.

Seriously, reconsider this introduction, condense it, and put the full explanation in the back of the book if you wish. For the images of 34 characters, also in the back of the book for reference.

Also consider removing the prologue all together and work it in as a reveal in the story.

Edit Note: there is a comment on this review stating that the material in the front of the book about introduction/three images listing 34 characters was included in the book "just for fun."'I stand by my reaction to it that influenced my decision to DNF and my comments regarding structure and reorganization.

Again, I thank the author for the opportunity to have access to the book and I really do hope the book does well because it does have an intriguing premise.

I willingly read the book The Arcana Trials: A Game of Fate and Blood as an ARC (Advanced Reader Copy) and to be completely honest, I haven't read anything like it. There are witchy trials linked to the Arcana Deck and they have to fight for their lives to survive. The book was so freaking good, I didn’t want to stop reading. I love how the characters grow with the story. Selene is such a queen, like the way she keeps fighting for what she thinks is right, even when she could just focus on surviving. The way she keeps trying even when she's tired and doesn't give up is really inspiring. Ezra had me so mad in the beggining because he was so cryptic and frustrating but after a while I just couldn't help but love him. From betrayal to grief to love this book made me feel so many different emotions and I really recommend reading it.

Oh my gosh, I was completely swept away by this story. The world-building is immersive and cleverly woven throughout, revealing its magic piece by piece rather than overwhelming you from the start.

I am not joking, with every turn of the page, danger simmers, desire builds, and the emotional stakes climb higher. Selene is a powerful, morally ambiguous heroine who commands your loyalty, and Ezra’s quiet desperation to protect her brings a poignant edge to their bond. The world building is insanely immersive and clever as heck! And of course one thing that always wins me over, banter and it was on point. This never felt rushed and it's been a minute since a pacing was so perfect.

Honestly, the world of cursed witches and lethal trials feels both fresh and deeply compelling. I was not prepared to laugh, cry, grit my teeth and hold my seat. I'm hooked.

I’m not going to leave a rating on this book as I didn’t completely finish it but I did get well over halfway into it before deciding to DNF. Unfortunately, this book just truly wasn’t for me. I wish there was more exploration of and focus on the world, and that the trials were longer to make the stakes feel higher. I honestly felt like the characters were just instantly obsessed with each other which isn’t what I enjoy in books, nor did I truly feel connected with our main character. Regardless, I really enjoyed the writing, it read fast, and did a really great job at setting the atmosphere of a scene, so I would love to see more from this author in the future. Sad to say that this one just wasn’t for me but thank you so much to the author for the arc, I wish them nothing but the best with this release and future ones as well.

Thank you Juniper for the opportunity to read this ARC!

This was such a fantastic time! I was sucked in from the very beginning - witchy vibes and tarot cards! Yes please! The world building I loved and felt like I was there with them during the trials, Juniper did a fantastic job bring us into the story right along these characters!

Every century witches are claimed to participate in the Arcana trials, there are not choices - it is in the cards - and you have one goal: survive!

Selene is an incredibly powerful witch and we follow her through the trails and gets stuck with the God of Death himself, Ezra! I ate this up, the tension, the danger the longing! I loved watching the evolution of Selene and Ezra as they try to navigate the trails together.

This book will absolutely suck you in from the very beginning and keep you hooked until the last page. The author does a fantastic job of holding your attention, balancing fast-paced action with moments of intrigue and emotion that make it impossible to put down. I highly recommend picking it up if you’re looking for a fresh, immersive read.

The vibes feel very much like The Vampire Diaries meets The Hunger Games — a mix of dark, romantic tension with high-stakes survival and conflict. The world-building has a familiar edge but still feels unique, especially with the way magic is woven into the story. It’s not your typical approach to magic, which made it stand out from other fantasy books I’ve read.

If you enjoy stories that blend danger, desire, and an addictive pace, this one should definitely be at the top of your TBR.

✨️I received this as an ARC from the author. ✨️

It's witches, cursed to compete in deadly trials inspired by the major arcana cards of the tarot, against one another and the gods imprisoned within the ancient deck itself.

You won't need any background knowledge of tarot to enjoy this one. It's about half focused on the trials themselves, and half on the romantic arc between the main characters. We get both the FMC Selene and the MMC Ezra's point of view, but there's still a lot of tension between them...and some very big secrets that get revealed in the final act. (Cue the dramatic music!)

The most emotional part for me was actually a moment between Selene and one of the side characters. (It's the fireflies, to clarify without spoiling). I choked up.

As this is a romance, we get our HEA, and it's pretty sweet and satisfying. There are definitely more questions I could ask about the world, the magic, and some of the characters, but the major plots do get resolved.

3.25⭐️ i’d like to firstly thank juniper for giving me the opportunity to read this book early with an arc. for a standalone novel, this has a strong and interesting storyline that i wish was a series so i could keep reading more! i enjoyed the lingering sense of mystery while you uncover different things about the story, the characters, and the trials. there are some twists and turns throughout that keep the story interesting and engaging. this book is incredibly fast paced and you’re thrown in to the story instantly which im not used to as i normally reach for longer stories such as series or duologies with a very heavy world building aspect, but i enjoyed this book and would love to read more of her work.

Fascinating world building! Very fast-paced. Based on a tarot deck, a witch traps gods into each of the major Arcana cards. Every 100 years, witches names are called by fate to compete in trials, with many dying.

SPOILERS
I loved the magic system and world building but I would have loved to seen more. Definitely would have loved to see the past between Ezra and Selene fleshed out way more. So much history and I felt like we barely got a glimpse.
Would have loved to see Dahlia’s villain arc more fleshed out as well. Why did she want those things?
Felt there were some gaps along the way but the story clipped along just fine.

Overall, would recommend especially if you’re a mood reader.

The Arcana Trials absolutely consumed me. From the brutal, blood-soaked competitions that rival The Hunger Games to the dark, magnetic pull of Ezra Vale . Juniper got me hooked with her tiktok videos as a huge fan of Damon Salvatore. ( Ezra's character was inspired by Damon) I could not put this book down. The writing is atmospheric, sharp, and addictive—every chapter drips with danger, tension, and forbidden longing. Selene is the kind of fierce, morally gray heroine you can’t help but root for, along with Ezra's fear of losing her, and the world of cursed witches and deadly trials feels original. If you love witchy fantasy with ruthless games, high stakes, and a romance that will ruin you, this one’s for you.

"The Arcana Trials: A Game of Fate and Blood by Juniper Blaire is a captivating fantasy novel that masterfully combines intrigue, magic, and complex character dynamics. The story immerses readers in a richly crafted world where every decision carries weight, and the stakes are high. Blaire's writing is both engaging and evocative, drawing you into the twists and turns of the trials and the characters' struggles. While the pacing is generally well-maintained, some moments felt slightly rushed, and a few plot threads could have been explored further. Overall, it's an exciting and thought-provoking read that fans of dark fantasy and intricate storytelling will thoroughly enjoy."

What an absolutely BEAUTIFUL book! Ezra and Selene are two of my new favorite characters. Their love and how it is written is stunning! The trials were detailed, new, and full of twists and turns. There were multiple times in this book that I was stunned at what I was reading and how things connected. This is definitely on the top ten of my reads for this year and even higher on my fantasy reads! The yearning is raw, deep, and made me love this book so much. I laughed, I cried, I gasped, and was filled with love for the characters throughout the ending. Juniper Blaire is an excellent author and I cannot wait to read more books from her!

I finished this book in one day, and I could not put it down! The pacing was perfect. At no point did the story feel laboured or rushed. The character development was incredibly well implemented. The plotting was unique and masterfully done. I've read a fair few trial based fantasies. This one felt refreshing. Reading it was like coming up for fresh air in an otherwise saturated genre.

The characters were tormented and haunted. The yearning was traumatic and all-encompassing. The inner monologues were self-loathing & devaluing but in the most romantic way.

I thoroughly recommend this to anyone who can see the light through the dark and isn't scared of a little pain.

I loved the unique world building here. Tarot/Arcana trials to survive, how they came about, the different covens and powers, Juniper did not disappoint with this book. There were twists and turns and characters you hated right away and ones you wanted to hate, you could really feel for Selene. Ezra was also a great character, I can’t give away spoilers but great twist for him. I loved that we got to see into the trials, a little bit about the lore, there were things going on outside the trials and the cards. Super cool that they got pulled into the deck and that the deck was created as a prison for the gods. I really enjoyed this book and I’m grateful I was able to receive an ARC of it.

Such a fantastic read! I was hooked from the very first page all the way to the end. It felt like Caraval meets The Hunger Games, and I loved every second of it. Selene was such a strong female lead—you really get to watch her grow from a quiet, unsure woman into someone fierce and powerful. And Ezra? Absolutely amazing! His character development was so well done, and discovering the truth about him made the story even better. The twists and turns kept me on my toes, and the romance was just perfect. I honestly loved everything about this book!

I was lucky to receive an arc of this book from the author in exchange for my honest opinion.
I do love me some Romantasy and enemies to lovers so i jumped right into the story, the world building is something i didn’t encounter so far in fantasy book iv’e read before and i really enjoyed it.
The reason i gave it a 4 stars is because i felt the main characters became obsessed with each other way to quickly and the trials ended quite fast..
All in all i do recommend this book for romantasy lovers:)

I really took this book in its rich in building the scene with all the intricacies of fate and magic but not over unnecessary detail that gets confusing.

The book has twists and turns as the characters developed, struggles are shown and the trials enfold I was absorbed in it, enthralled by it having to turn each page just to get more.

It was perfectly paced for me I was not left with any question but a strong need to look at reading the authors other books

4.5 stars! I wanted to live in this book and watch it all happen. Juniper Blaire crafter her own spell on us with it. I was immediately hypnotized and obsessed by 10% in. It's witches, tarot, trials (that's how u do trials!), magic, enemies to lovers. There's a new shadow daddy to meet. My only setback was the excessive use of hollow, hollowed out, hollowing.

Ever since I read The Arcana Chronicle series by Kresley Cole, I’ve been looking for books that are tarot card based! This was perfect for me. I loved the characters, the deadly trials, the covens, all of it. The details and world building were great! The slow burn romance was done great also! I started Arcana Trials and honestly was so sad when the book was over. It combines magic, strategy, and high-stakes. Every trial is dangerous, and every choice has consequences, creating constant tension that pulls you more into the book. The tarot-inspired magical system is unique and I loved it. I found myself fully invested in the characters and the storyline. I was excited to see what would happen next.

I enjoyed reading this book! It started off fairly quickly, and by Chapter 3 I was excited about what would happen next. I enjoyed following the witches through each of the trials and the romance that unfolds. The bond, the jealousy, and being torn between the villain and the good guy. There is a scene in the book that hit me right in the feels. Loved it! 🖤
