A Rogue returned in need of unmasking. A dangerous magic in need of containing. Her town and her heart hang in the balance.

Grace Robbins knows the truth about the Rogue, Fidara’s dead rebel, and she’d planned for years to take up the fallen green mantle. Mayor Nautin’s taxes have devastated lives and laid waste to an already struggling town. But life, and legends, have taught Grace that even if she could survive rebellion on her own, such blatant defiance would put at risk secrets she must keep. Secrets she must protect.

When Grace glimpses a figure in green dashing into Sherwood Forest, the past collides with the present. Someone has revived the legend she’d abandoned. Grace sees an opportunity to prove herself a true unmask the rebel and convince him to hang up the cloak. But the identity of this new Rogue isn’t as obvious as Grace hoped.

The mysterious man has no intention of ending his rebellion, and the more Grace tries to change his mind, the more she remembers how it felt to desire to fight for the people, and how it felt to truly be seen by someone who believes in her.

How can Grace defend Fidara and its people against mystic treasure if she joins the new Rogue? But how can she stand by while her people suffer unjustly?

Can she trust a man who guards his identity so jealously? Grace doesn’t know if her heart will survive the choices she must make.

Gilded Locks is a reimagining of "Goldielocks" and "Robin Hood." Sneak through Sherwood Forest and discover who is just right in this fairytale romance, part of the All That Glitters series—a collection of twelve books brimming with Tales of Treasure and True Love. Each book is written by a different author and can be enjoyed in any order, so pick a new favorite and discover that not all that glitters is gold.

Julene has lived in worlds of the mind since childhood. There wasn't a board game, scooter ride, or friendship she couldn't weave into the imaginary adventures she was constantly living out in her head.

It wasn't until middle school that she realized she wanted to translate imaginings into ink, but once the idea took root, it grew steadily into a dream she knew she'd find a way to fulfill. Stories were written on binder paper, in school notebooks, on whiteboards, on computer files, pretty much anywhere she could find when a story consumed her.

But though she loved crafting tales, her interests grew in other disciplines too. She studied science and worked in tech, developing her pen-craft as a hobby, expecting the time would eventually come to focus on her dream. The time came earlier than expected and Julene is thrilled.

Over the years, her imaginary world has expanded into a universe and she has stories upon stories she'd love to develop and share. She can't wait, and hopes you enjoy exploring worlds with her.

I received an ARC copy from the author and though not required to post a review, I wanted to offer my honest, voluntary impression upon reading this book.

This was an enjoyable read which had elements from the classic story about Robin Hood set in Sherwood Forest.

The town is under duress because of the corrupt mayor and sheriff with the taxes he’s imposed and those who carry out the orders. There used to be resistance in the past but that resistance died out because of an incident back then. However, one person is awaiting another to step up and carry on the resistance but when she doesn’t he steps in to do it himself.

What that person doesn’t know is that behind the mantle he is taking on is a secret that others like the girl have sworn to protect!

What follows is an engaging story but it leaves you with a sobering message- don’t judge a person because of who he is outwardly but rather what he is inside! Hasty judgements are seldom correct as Grace finds out!

I really enjoyed this tale! I got caught up in it and knew who the Rogue was almost right off but in the story it took Grace just about to the end to come to that same conclusion!

It shows what can happen when people finally join ranks to fight against conditions and people who are destroying them! Deceit and betrayal abound but when their intentions are finally revealed it doesn’t have the impact it normally may have if other circumstances hadn’t also happen which changed the mind set of the heroine of this story!

I wholeheartedly and enthusiastically recommend you pick up and read this book! I know you’ll enjoy it just as much as I did! Julene weaves a story you’ll relish as you feel yourself sucked into the narrative and you don’t want to quit until the story wraps up! The story keeps calling you back like a siren’s song and you heed it’s call because you too want to know what happens next! As the Borg said in the Star Trek series, “Resistance is futile”!

Get this book today and you’ll find a book you’ll enjoy just as much as I did!

Gilded Locks by Julene Johnson is the final ARC I received from the All That Glitters multi-author series of fairy tale retellings. I was eager to read a clean retelling of "Goldilocks and the Three Bears" because the ones I had read previously were not. Yet, the book veers way more toward an adaptation of Robin Hood than Goldilocks, even though it is promoted as both, and the title gives off strong "Goldilocks" vibes. It is primarily a political drama with some romance and fantasy on the side. In that way, it differs from the other books in this series and may appeal to a different audience than the rest of the series. Still, it was a unique and interesting concept for the author's first novel.

Grace Robbins is a Protector whose family's goal is to protect their community from a dangerous substance that melts everything it touches into liquid gold. The substance has little use outside of its destructive purposes, but it could be deemed valuable to those who are selfish and greedy. The town is run by a corrupt mayor who exploits the people for taxes. That's where the mysterious Robin Hood figure comes in. The Rogue, a legendary superhero, can be anyone who dons a magical green cloak that hides their identity. Although Grace was next in line to take up the mantle, someone else beat her to it, and she is certain that it is someone she knows.

The romance in this story didn't cut it for me. I figured out who the Rogue was immediately, but that doesn't change the fact that Grace didn't know for most of the book. Until the end of the story, she was growing feelings toward someone she couldn't identify. When this trope is used in superhero stories, the love interest usually has a closer relationship with the superhero's alter ego, even though the hero's mystery is intriguing. Although Grace has some ties to the Rogue's potential identities at social gatherings, they communicate with stiff Regency era greetings, while all the important character-building discussions happen while he is in disguise.

The plot of this book works for what it is, which is not quite a fairy tale adaptation. It reminds me more of a medieval James Bond story, filled with espionage and political intrigue. I'm sure there is an audience for that. I just don't know if it's with a series of fairy tale retellings. While there are some fantasy elements, including the magical cloak and gold-like substance, it gives off more of a sci-fi or superhero vibe than a fairy tale one. It had no semblance of "Goldilocks and the Three Bears" that I could see, and I'm not sure how that was supposed to play into the story.

Gilded Locks by Julene Johnson is a unique blend of political drama, romance, and fantasy that draws more inspiration from Robin Hood than the implied Goldilocks. While it differs from other books in the All That Glitters series, the concept is interesting and showcases the author's creativity in her first novel. The story's blend of espionage, intrigue, and superhero elements may appeal to young adults who are looking for action-adventure stories with clean romance, but it may not fit the traditional fairy tale retelling mold of the series.

Gilded Locks was such a fun and refreshing retelling! As both a fairy tale reimagining and a nod to Robin Hood, this book delivered a perfect mix of adventure, mystery, and romance. I was lucky enough to receive an ARC from the author, and I truly enjoyed every page.

Grace is such a strong, compelling main character. Watching her wrestle with responsibility, identity, and her place in a world full of secrets made for a rich and layered story. Her journey felt authentic and empowering, and I loved seeing how her relationship with the new Rogue evolved—especially as the enemies-to-lovers tension built and the mysterious identity of the masked hero unraveled.

There were secret letters, masked missions, magical twists, and so many deliciously suspicious break-ins that had me turning pages quickly. And yes, I definitely picked up on the Robin Hood vibes—and loved it.

If you enjoy fairy tale retellings with a dose of intrigue, slow-burn romance, and rebellion with heart, this is one to add to your list.

Delightful fairytale retelling story! It combined Goldilocks and Robin Hood. This is part of the All That Glitters, multi-author book series. I haven't read them all but the ones I have read have been really fun!

I was intrigued wondering how the author was going to combine these two fairytales. The beginning (after the prologue) was a little confusing for me but I wasn't sure if it was just me and my tired brain (lots of vacation stuff happening) or if it could use a little more clarification for some of the characters. Probably my tired brain. But once I got a little further into it I was hooked. There was some suspense with Grace Robbins trying to help her town and a Rogue coming into play to help the town as well. But is the Rogue really a good guy or not. Because in the past he wasn't. Yet there's something about him that Grace can't quite figure out.

I loved the prologue!!! It set up the Rogue really nicely. I guessed pretty early on who I thought was the Rogue and I was right! But the author did a good job of putting plenty of red herrings into the story to lead us readers on a merry chase! Have fun with this adventurous story and watch a sweet love story unfold before your eyes!

Content: Clean. Some moments of mild peril.

I received a copy from the author. All thoughts and opinions in the review are my own.

Happy Reading!!!

This is a wonderful retelling of Robin Hood! The characters are absolutely adorable. Julene did a wonderful job spinning a tale that had a few obvious but delightful twists to this classic story. The conclusion of the story was so creative and enjoyable. I consider this an enemy to lover type story, and I highly recommend.

I received this as an ARC book; however, the opinions are completely my own.

The first 10% took me a minute to get into but I flew through the other 90%. This story was sweet and wholesome but still had the stakes. And the romance was squeaky clean and oh so satisfying. Garrick was so shy and sweet. Plus there was a bit of enemies to lovers and I am here for it! I loved this story and will be keeping my eyes on this author! This will definitely be in my comfort read list!

First read by Julene, and it was a fast-paced adventure! I ended up making some guesses early on, and I was pleased to see I was right about almost everything but the mayor. Great Robin Hood retelling!

My Thoughts:

This was such a fun and unique Robin Hood retelling. Grace and her family are part of the protectors of Sherwood Forest but have been unable to truly take as stand more than making public displays of resistance during public events. Grace is frustrated by this inaction but when her best friend who has been driven out she feels unable to continue on with the plans to take action like their parents before them to help with the plight of their towns situation.

When someone starts taking up the mask and causing trouble Grace is determined to figure out who it is and bring them to their scenes before they cause more trouble! With unlikely friends and allies found along the way will she be able to help turn things around and discover who has taken up what she had hoped to be her roll unbidden?

This was truly such a fun and unique Robin Hood retelling. I felt frustrated at times with how defeated Grace and her parents acted but I mean it could be understandable for the situations they were in. I really enjoyed this wonderful story and the twist and turns it took me on. It kept me on my toes trying to figure out if I was on the right track with who I believe had taken up the mask! I love this story and enjoyed the adventure of it!

Thanks to the author for the ARC, all thoughts and opinions are my own!

Before I begin, I would like to thank Julene Johnson for allowing me to read a copy of her new book, Gilded Locks, which is part of the multi-author All That Glitters series and is available on Amazon starting on July 5th, 2025.

Grace Robbins knows what happened to the Rogue, the dead Fidaran rebel, and has planned to take his place for many years. Mayor Nautin’s raised taxes have devastated the townspeople’s way of life and they are struggling to survive. Grace knows that if she does become a rebel, it would endanger secrets that she promised to defend. She sees a young man wearing a green cloak in Sherwood Forest, and the masked stranger is determined to become the new Rogue. The more she tries to convince him to cease the rebellion, the more determined he becomes. As they talk, the urge to fight alongside the Rogue increases, and Grace is torn between trying to protect the mystical secrets she knows or ending her town’s suffering. Is it possible to do both with a man that won’t reveal his true identity?

This book was great. You have Grace Robbins, a loyal, caring, determined, and beautiful young woman that does her best to help her community survive via farming and secret supply runs with her family. You have Garrick Clairmont, a strong, reserved, kind, and dedicated young man who has to deal with his father’s reputation as the sheriff and henchman of Mayor Nautin, and try to get along with the other townspeople. The interactions between Grace and Garrick were cute, sweet, and charged at times. I appreciated the author’s discussion of whether the dangers of resisting authoritarian figures were worth the risk, and the reasoning why someone would or wouldn’t be afraid to join the cause. Grace’s investigation over the Rogue, specifically his identity, as tensions between the townspeople and the mayor rose were well written and full of suspense. I was cheering for Grace and the townspeople as I read the story. Overall, if you like Robin Hood retellings, magic, rebellion against corrupt officials, and sweet secret identity romance, then I would highly recommend this book.

Grace Robbins thought her life as a Protector would be more exciting than sitting out in silent protests against the mayor. She had plans, her best friend was supposed to be there with her and they were going to bring the Rogue back. After an encounter with the sheriff 2 years ago and her friend leaving, she has come to understand there are consequences to actions and people can get hurt or killed in the mayor's wrath and greed. Her and family are still Protectors choosing to help in more subtle ways, usually with supply runs and helping to distribute goods secretly. One night while coming back from the market Grace thought she saw a man dressed in a green cloak, someone trying to revive the Rogue mantle. She goes in search of the stranger hoping it's her friend that has come back but ultimately trying to warn them from making the lives of the townsfolk worse. The Rogue is determined to do something for the mayor and sheriff are plotting and he is tired of seeing the people being taken advantage of. Grace is determined to figure out who the Rogue is and stop them, the Rogue has been seen causing the mayor's insecurity to escalate, and vandalism of some of the oldest families in town are being blamed on the Rogue. Tensions are rising and the town can only take so much more, choosing the right course of action can mean saving or destroying it.

Definitely more a Robin Hood story than Goldilocks but it is there, just a bit more subtle. And an interesting choice of two stories to blend and make work, which the author did a great job of. It was a bit slow for me at the start getting through some of Grace's daydreams and assumptions but once she started interacting with the Rogue the story just took off. I loved the heart to heart Grace had with her mother, that was amazing. And I think Garrick is now one of my favorite MMCs. Overall a very well done story and I would love to read more of this world and these characters.

I enjoyed this take on the classic Robin Hood tale. But instead of following Robin's perspective, you see the story through Marian's, or in this story Grace's, eyes. Grace and her family are Protectors guarding a dangerous, ancient magic and doing their best to prevent it from spreading into the world. Years ago, a Rogue, also a Protector, was providing for and protecting the people not just from this magic but also the corrupt mayor. He was sentenced to death but his legend lives on through stories. Now a new Rogue has appeared, and Grace isn't sure if it is her friend Jonathan returned after leaving two years before, or someone else. To make matters more complicated, it is harvest season and there have been signs of the magic gold being distributed, and the Rogue isn't making things any easier on the townspeople. In the midst of all this, she finds an unexpected friend in a girl named Willa, and she finds herself attracted to the Rogue as well as two other young men in the town, a scribe and the son of the dirty sheriff of the town, one of whom she suspects is actually the Rogue. What's a girl to do? I mean come on, who wouldn't want a mysterious masked and cloaked man interested? Grace struggles with her heart, and in convincing her parents that the Rogue is someone to be trusted. Gilded Locks gives enough mystery and intrigue to keep readers interested and turning pages, while still delivering an exciting story and romance. It is a bit of a dual POV as well. You get snippets of the Rogue's thoughts on his mission and Grace! I would be interested in reading more in this world and learning more of the backstory of the magic gold that is being protected. Overall this is an excellent read and addition to the All That Glitters series.

Gilded Locks was such a fun and captivating escape!

He wants nothing more than for Grace to don the cloak and become The Rogue. But as time passes he realizes that she has laid those plans and ideas aside and is now rebelling in a safer more passive way. So he is forced to don the cloak himself and revive The Rogue before the town suffers from the taxation and hunger brought on by the greedy mayor and his loyal sheriff.

And Grace…well Grace…she’d dreamed of becoming The Rogue but the fear of exacerbating an already dire problem keeps her cloak in the trunk in her room and her protests minimal.

But when an unknown stranger suddenly dons the cloak and suddenly appears to take matters into his own hands Grace knows she has to figure out who this stranger is and get him to stop before the barely surviving system disolves before their very eyes.

This story was so so very unique and intriguing! Although it had a ribbon of a Robin Hood retelling subtly woven throughout it really did take on a life and tale of its very own. And I very much appreciated that.

I loved the magic which was very lite and subtle! I loved the use of the gold as more of a plaque than a substance you want to possess! I loved the mystery of who has become The Rogue (although…it really is only a secret to the characters in the book and not to the reader)! And I very very much enjoyed the sweet, clean, romance…which I will refrain going into too much details with…because…Spoilers…

All in all, this was delightful and captivating debut! I very highly recommend it to any and all fantasy readers who like a little mystery, a new and unique take on an old tale, and lots of swoony, clean romance.

This was such a fun and interesting take on Robin Hood!

I have never read a retelling singularly focused on Robin Hood, and to be honest, am not super familiar with his story.

This book was super good, and I was immediately hooked!

I loved Grace. She was stubborn, determined, and spunky! She was a wonderful heroine and protagonist!

Garrick! I loved him so much! I wish there was more of a dual POV- I wanted much more of him. He was stubborn, but also super kind. I love characters who are just kind, especially when you don’t expect them to be.

The Rogue was a character in it of itself. I thought this idea was fascinating. When you really think about it doesn’t make sense that Robin Hood was only one person. The idea that there are multiple people all of which are the Rogue is so intriguing. They touch on the relationship between all these people and how Grace wants to belong to a team of Rogues, but I thought it could go much deeper!

I also really liked Willa. I thought she was a fun character and a nice match for Grace. However, I wanted more from Johnathan. He played such an important role for many characters, and I wish there was a little bit more closure on his storyline.

I was a little confused on the magical situation of this book. The Zerudorn gold didn’t make much sense to me, and I think the story could have done without it. Especially since it played such a big role in the story, I wished it made a little more sense.

I loved all the side characters. They were so much fun, and I wish I got to visit this little town!

I also adored the romance. It was definitely slow burn, with a hint of a love triangle, but I loved it!

Gilded Locks is a gender bent retelling of Robin Hood with interesting twists and a wonderful heroine!

This was such an un adventure! It was such an inventive blend of fairytales and I was so excited to read Ms. Johnson's debut!
I felt for Grace! She was in such a a tough spot both as her family tried to care for their town and among her family, she felt in between a child and adult. She definitely felt young, but I understood her thought process. There were times where she led with her emotions, but I enjoyed seeing the progression of things and revelation of secrets through her eyes. Grace was close with her family, but felt the difficulties of coming of age. I appreciated how real it felt, while there was much love between them all, they did not always get along and had differences of opinions.
I enjoyed the suspense of the story! There were secrets that were slowly revealed and while there was a few surprises, I appreciated how the clues made sense, It did feel a bit like I was dropped into the story and I was a bit confused with some of the world in the beginning. However, it did not take too much away from the story.
There were a lot of fun side characters as well! It was fun to get to know the characters in the town and I appreciated the theme of seeing beyond initial impressions. Grace was learning to take the time to get to know people and to not judge based on external factors. Overall, this was a fun fairytale inspired fantasy with some romance. It has some light fantasy violence and only kisses.
I received an ARC.

This was another fantastic book in the All that Glitters series and a debut book. It was a delightful retelling and mash up of underrated fairytales! It took a minute to get myself into the world, but then I couldn’t put it down. Julene did a great job building the backstory and why we had the Goldilocks/RobinHood situation.

“Actions. Choices. They spoke loudly. They showed a person’s character. She was tired of sitting around, tired of waiting for someone else to choose to change. She knew what she wanted and what she was willing to risk."

I loved Grace and even though she was trying to be a true Protector, she still would not give herself over to what she really needed to be doing, being the Rogue. She is fiercely devoted to her family and I adore them. This story has adventures, twists, mystery and so many great characters. There were some fun romance twists and definite love angles going on. I would definitely read another book by Julene and I need an epilogue, I have so many questions! Any teen would enjoy this story.

Gilded Locks is golden, especially for a debut author. Johnson drew us into the plight of the town incredibly well. Grace’s determination and resourcefulness made her a delight to read, though her assumptions made her a little obtuse at times. Garrick and James made for an entertaining contrast, at least for me. I would be curious to learn more about the Zerudorn gold and enchanted ice. Although I like the characters as individuals and they had good chemistry, I felt like the relationship moved a little fast at the end with how little Garrick and Grace interacted without secrets between them.

Although I am uncertain where the Goldilocks elements come into play, that may just be me. The Robin Hood elements were definitely present and had a unique spin. Few Robin Hood retellings that I have read have focused on the community and possible repercussions as much as this retelling which makes it stand out. Even better, the outlaw’s parents are alive for this story!

Clean in language and content, I enjoyed reading this book and would recommend it, especially to people who love Robin Hood retellings or are looking for a new author!

Gilded Locks is an amazing debut novel! The dangerous magic in this story confused me at first (and I’m still curious but have an understanding) but I would love to read more stories set in this world. Goldie Locks and Robin Hood were never fairytales that I would have imagined together. They work really well in this case. I loved making connections between the characters in this retelling and the original tales.

Grace is a strong character, full of stubbornness and rebellion. She can have an attitude at times (understandably) but she cares deeply about those around her. The Rogue is so much fun. He charmed me from the beginning with his courage and sweetness. My favorite scenes in Gilded Locks were interactions between him and Grace. They are slightly flirty and mysterious.

The mystery in Gilded Locks is fun. I had my suspicions but I was happy to pick up clues and second guess myself. One time, I found myself being completely wrong. I loved the connections between the characters and the dangerous magic. I’m so interested to see more in this world.

Thank you to Julene Johnson for an ARC of Gilded Locks! All opinions are my own.

Reader’s Notes:

-this is part of a series, but meant to be read as a stand-alone

-this is told mainly from Grace’s point of view (with a few smaller sections from the Rogue’s point of view)

-there is some fantasy violence (sword fighting/threatening with a knife/arrows shot) & death (magical material that consumes everything in it’s space/that touches it)

Review:

I love Robin Hood retellings and this one was so good! I loved the way the story was told and that the Rogue’s identity was kept even from the reader until Grace figures it out. I loved getting to see some of the Rogue’s point of view at points in the story and what he was thinking about certain things! I also loved the various relationship/friendship growths that took place! It was fun to see Grace’s perspective change both towards others as things were pointed out, as well as how she changed some other characters’ perspective on what they were doing/saying.

Summary:

Grace knows the truth behind the legend of the Rogue, an infamous outlaw. And how he wasn’t meant to be revived once the legend died. But now someone is running around Sherwood Forest and town dressed in his regalia and causing trouble. What he doesn’t realize, is that his desire to help will only make things worse for the same people he’s trying to help.

Grace is determined to stop the man behind the Rogue to end the increase of the people’s suffering and to further protect the secret hiding within the forest. But the more she speaks to the Rogue, the more Grace is reminded of what it truly means to be a Protector and why the Rogue was made in the first place.

With the Rogue guarding his identity at every turn and defending his mission, Grace must decide if she’s to continue trying to stand in his way or join the fight with a louder voice than she has in the past…

Grace Robbins has always known that she would become a Protector when she turned eighteen. And for years, she dreamed of also donning the mask of the mysterious Rogue. But now that she’s grown, she understands the dangers the Rogue poses to the true directive of the Protectors — one that matters to the entire continent.
The Rogue might offer temporary relief to the villagers suffering under the mayor’s demands for increased taxes. But it's a risk as well. And Grace doesn’t know what to do with the man who has taken up the mantle. She’s confident she knows his identity. But is he really the man she thinks he is, even without the mask?
“I see you.”
I love stories that center around characters seeing the truth behind the masks we all present to the world. And while it did take Grace much too long to figure out who he was (or was that just the benefit of reader insight? haha), when she did truly open her eyes to what was around her, she understood more than just the identity of the Rogue. She understood her reality as well.
This was a fun adventure with romance as a side plot. The friendship that developed between Grace and Willa was a lot of fun, and I’d love to see more of Willa’s story.

Personal rating: 5/5 stars
Spice rating: 1/5

Plot: 5/5

This is book is a part of the all that glitters multi author fantasy series.
It is a retelling of Goldilocks and Robin Hood.

Personal thoughts:
I absolutely loved this book. But Grace was so blind, so very blind. But I am very happy for her and Garrick.
I found the concept of the Zerudorn gold very interesting (I find elements rather fascinating), I think it was an very interesting take on the whole Robin Hood story since they (the Rogues) were not only helping the citizens but also protecting them from an unknown threat in the of a somewhat magical element.

I also loved how realistic Garrick was, he didn’t just magically become the best in the world and archery and climbing trees just because he was a hero. He wasn’t perfect but he was trying, he was fighting for the people and fighting to escape his family name. I just loved Garrick.

Thank you to the author, Julene Johnson, for an ARC of Gilded Locks. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

With an adventurous spin on the tale of Robin Hood, Julene Johnson masterfully illustrates a twist no one would expect. Shadowed in the disguise of a mask, cloak, and wielding a bow and arrow, the Rogue helps the needy.

Grace was supposed to be the Rogue but she couldn’t bring herself to. Imagining all the possibilities, she struggles to find her way. When there’s a new Rogue that shows up, she is dedicated to help him see how dangerous his occupational hazards might cause.

I love how there is so much character growth with Grace. She goes from thinking she knows everything in the world to realizing that she grew up with a biased based on family last names.

Her suitors, James and Garrick, are dashingly dreamy. I enjoy Garrick and his witty humor. He is an absolute sweetheart. But the Rogue has quite the personality, I love his openness to be flirty with Grace.

I was given an opportunity to be a part of this ARC and all opinions are my own.

I received an ARC from the author.
(Sorry for the late review.)

First off, I found the pacing rather slow. That was one of the reasons it took me a while to finish.

I didn't really like Grace's parents that much but her brother seemed realistic enough. 😂

Garrik was sweet I really liked him but I was kind of disappointed that you never actually get to see Jonathan. I was bored by James and finding out he was a villain wasn't that surprising.

The world building felt find of empty and the stakes didn't feel that high. No one got hurt that badly at any time other then the mayor and that was his own fault.

All of this isn't to say i didn't like the book, I just think this are things that could be improved upon.

I am excited to see if any of these characters get to have their own books in the future. (Like maybe Jonathan.)I have hope for this author and i look forward to more books by her. Hopefully with higher stakes.

One of my favorite things about reading a multi-author book series is being introduced to new-to-me authors. Gilded Locks is the debut novel by Julene Johnson, who has taken inspiration from the classic tales of Robin Hood and Goldilocks, and woven them into a delightful clean romance.
Told from the perspective of Grace Robbins, we see a young woman who grew up thinking she would become the next Rogue and defend her people, but who also isn't sure if standing up to trouble is going to help, or hurt, those she loves. Someone else steps up in her place, and the hijinks and banter draw you into the story. When a dangerous treasure threatens everyone, Grace has to decide if she will step up and work with the Rogue, or if she will try to do things a different way.

This was a clean romance, with fun twists on familiar stories.

I received an ARC copy from the author but all thoughts and opinions are my own :)

Wow, wow, wow!!! This book was incredible! Gilded Locks was a masterpiece of a retelling of Robin Hood! I am beyond stunned this is the author’s debut novel because it was so well written. Like in Robin Hood we have a city where there many who are suffering from the taxes placed upon them by a cruel mayor. There is an evil sheriff, a vigilante/rebel, and a Sherwood Forest which contains a secret!
Grace and Garrick are characters that will win your heart and reading about their interactions and relationship will immediately capture your attention!
If you like Robin Hood but with some hints of the Scarlett Pimpernel and King Midas’s Gold then this is the tale for you! I promise you will not regret getting this book!!!

Wow. I was absolutely blown away in the best kind of way that this is the author's very first published work. The writing is well done, the plot intriguing, and the mysterious vibes are so much fun.

I love that it's sort of a second-generation generation Robinhood story, where the FMC is set to take up the cloak from her parents, and yet it's an unexpected ally that actually propels her past her fears and into action. At the end of the book, I really wanted to hear more stories from this community, and these characters and hope that the author writes more books in the years to come. What an excellent debut!

The one small minus for me was I couldn't quite place the golidlocks elements, beyond literal golden locks. In all, this does not take away from the story, but I am curious if I missed something key in that regard.

This was a very good mashup of Goldielockes and Robin Hood. It was really fun to read a Goldielockes retelling since there are very few of them that I know of. The idea to mixing those fairytales together was clever and came out really good. I enjoyed the story alot. The plot was interesting, intriguing and filled with adventure. I liked the characters and the chemistry between them. The love story was cute and adoreble, and I really like the way the romance was built up. Overall a great read and wonderful debut by Julene. I look forward to read more from her.
I am greatful to have received and ARC

This was such a fun Robin Hood retelling! There were a few things that I felt were a bit predictable, but it was still an entertaining story. I love Robin Hood retellings just because of all the silly shenanigans to foil the evil sheriff, and this book had me giggling several times!

I loved the FMC. Her spirit, wit and sass was so fun, and I loved that the author had me guessing and jumping back and forth, trying to decide which love interest to root for, almost until the very end!
There were also some fantastic side characters that added so much fun and complexity to the story.
Would definitely recommend it!

I did receive an ARC. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

What a beautiful story!!!! I wasn't sure what to expect from a debut novel, but Ms. Johnson knocked it out of the park! I loved the angst, the forbidden romance, and the snarky friendships! I liked Grace and Willa's friendship development the most, I think. This book is great for ages around twelve and up, completely clean, no language, no spice, just sweet main leads and wonderfully written character development!!!! I couldn't put it down. It's in my 'read in an hour' list now :)

Also Willa is such a nice name. It's been forever since I heard that name anywhere.

The only criticism I have is that I think the title doesn't fit as well as it could.

Gilded Locks was an absolute delight! I really enjoyed the clever historical tie-in to the Robin Hood legend and the rich fantasy elements—especially the enchanted capes and the sentient molten gold. Willa was a standout character, and I loved how the neighbors came together with such heart and loyalty. While I wish there had been more resolution around the gold and ice crisis (and the magical hideout in the woods felt underused after all the buildup), it didn’t take away from the overall enjoyment. A fantastic story and a strong addition to the All That Glitters series! I voluntarily reviewed this after receiving a free copy.
