On the first page, where she writes "the sun had shone" I rolled my eyes. After a few pages of annoyingly florid prose, I almost quit. But I have been recently spending my time with Tana French's Dublin Murder squad, so I wanted something light and fluffy to wash away the heartbreak of those stories, so I pressed on.
The best thing I can say about it is it was a quick read. I can't imagine the "twist" was meant to be a surprise, it's telegraphed almost from the get-go, but to me the surprise was that everyone gets a happy ending. Because honestly, what 29 year old man . Yuck.

Oh my gosh, what can I say? The story started off okay. Then it got stupid. Then it got really silly. Then it just got boring because the ending was so easy to figure out.
The main character, Phaedra, was someone I doubt I'd warm up to in real life since she's so perfect. She goes about the family correcting everyone's faults and making them all more perfect, like she is. *gag*
I wouldn't wish this book on my worst enemy. I guess it's okay if you like pompous upperclass Brits who have servants doing every last thing for them but that's not my kind of book.
I read the last chapter but didn't really finish the book since I was skipping sentences from about a third of the way in and then skipping paragraphs and then skipping pages to get to the end. It was all so boringly predictable.

On the positive side, this book has a very strong sense of place: the large country estate is described lovingly. For many of us, the social stratum at the centre of this novel is entirely alien and the author does a good job of breathing life into the people and geography of Fairfield Park.
And I finished the novel. Which doesn't always happen.
But there are a number of aspects of the book that irritated me. First Phaedra. As annoying a character you will be hard pressed to find. Unless, of course, you like your heroines full of sycophantic, cheesy psychology babble and one dimensional.
Second, it is entirely unbelievable that the family would welcome her and warm to her, nay, become obsessed with her, within such a short space of time. Within a week she has not only won over the entirely family but has transformed characters into different, enlightened people. She is involved in the most intimate aspects of family life within days of meeting them. And they think she is marvellous and wise. She's not.
Third, the story does not progress at all. The set up is outlined in the first few pages. There are then a few hundred pages of nothing happening before a nice, neat (predictable) ending. The middle part is taken up with repetition of "the attraction was mutual but they couldn't do anything about it" and "she really felt like part of the family".
I'm sure some will love it. I probably just picked up the wrong book.

I normally enjoy Santa Montefiore's novels, but this particular one did nothing for me! I didn't like the characters at all - thought they were all whiney and bratish!

🏠🏖️ Empecé leyendo y creyendo que estaría ante algo muy diferente a lo que escribió Santa porque leí un par de reseñas negativas pero conforme fui avanzando me di cuenta de que estaba ante un pequeño culebrón. La he leído hasta el final, me interesaba saber cómo se solucionaba todo, porque me enganchó, me super intrigó y me dejó 🤯.
🏖️🏠El mundo de Antoinette Frampton se desmorona tras la trágica muerte de su marido George, el hombre al que ha amado toda su vida, producto de un accidente en los Alpes. Él era su roca, su sostén, la persona a la que acudía en busca de amor y apoyo, siempre había vivido a la sombra de George, sin poder crecer como persona; Además de ser el padre de sus tres hijos: David, Josh casado con Roberta cuyo personaje es…de telenovela y de las malas, un ser avaricioso; y Tom un joven un mujeriego. También tenemos a la suegra Margaret, Lady Frampton, conocida por su mal carácter legendario: un ser infeliz, que creyó que su único hijo George le contaba todo.
🏖️🏠 Antoinette siempre pensó que que conocía muy bien a su marido… O al menos eso creía hasta el día de su funeral, cuando una misteriosa desconocida se presenta, muy afectada, para revelarles algo que cambiará sus vidas para siempre. Una tragedia hará que Antoinette, sus hijos, su nuera y su suegra deban enfrentarse a la verdad. El tema es que la verdad es muy difícil de soportar, peor que la tragedia ya que esa joven mujer desconocida se llama Phaedra y dice ser hija de George. Al principio, la familia se negará a reconocerla ya que los Frampton son una familia que poseé una gran fortuna y lo primero que piensan es que se trata de una farsante. Sin embargo y, con tal de llevarle la contra a su suegra, Antoinette decide averiguar, porque puede ser que en verdad George le fue infiel. Entonces decide llamar a Phaedra y la invita a pasar unos días en la casa, generando un problemón en la familia,ya que termina por conquistar a casi toda la familia, sobre todo a unos de ellos, que parece estar interesado en la joven muchacha.
🏖️🏠Ambientada en Hampshire, más concretamente, en Fairfield Park, la villa en la que residen los Frampton, está lleno de naturaleza y posee una gran belleza. Sin embargo, detrás de los personajes de Santa Montefiore existen secretos y pasados oscuros, y a su vez uno de los Frampton y Phaedra, la chica llena de secretos, se siente atraído, pero es su hermana y no se puede dejar llevar por los sentimientos. Y a ella le sucede lo mismo, pero su lado más racional posible les impide dejarse llevar, pese a que la atracción sea cada vez más fuerte.
🏖️🏠La autora de entrada dice que escribir “Una Casa de Verano” fue su “capricho”; ella misma lo afirma en las primeras páginas.
Como ya nos tiene acostumbrada Santa, las descripciones de los lugares son magistrales; Yo creo que ahí radica el secreto de la autora: Narra de tal forma que te envuelve y crea adicción su narrativa. Eso sí: la portada es muy sencilla pero no me gustó por el color amarillo chiyón. Deduzco que se trata de Phaedra y que dicho color es porque es parte de la historia; De todos modos preferiría que la portada fuese estilo a las ediciones extranjeras que son bellas fotos de paisajes.
🏖️🏠Ahora, cerca de la mitad del libro, Montefiore poco a poco empieza a arrojar pequeñas pistas que el lector tiene que empezar a unir hasta resolverlo y, en mi caso, lo único que hizo fue desesperarme más y sacar mis propias conclusiones. De todos modos hasta el final no se revela nada.
🏖️🏠Una casa de verano es para aquellas que amamos las historias de amor y que aman los finales felices. Este libro es una telenovela de principio a fin con una fiel y sumisa esposa que queda viuda luego de perder trágicamente a su marido, que vive rodeada de sus “perfectos hijos”, con una suegra y nuera amargada. Vivo retrato de una familia con un mensaje muy valioso como es el perdón.

DNF at 18%. This was so hard for me to get in to. The characters weren’t likeable and there was no separation between character’s thoughts. I tried to get to at least the part that the “daughter” turned out to be the “mistress” but couldn’t hack it.

This was not Santa’s best book. The plot was ok, but a lot of it just doesn’t ring true - even for fiction. The climax was flat, but I will add that this is the first book of hers that I didn’t enjoy.

Yes I read this book in one day. I was disappointed with where the author took the story. It's was very cliché, the married, older, adventurous, wealthy man has secret affair with beautiful, adventurous, much younger woman. Where have I heard that story before? Oh right, it's similar to my own life except my husband wasn't rich and he didn't die. He left me.
However that being said the main focus of the story was a tale of a family living in a rigid, expected life and ultimately being disconnected in every way, until the mistress appears under false pretense and opens their world up to new possibilities. And it's a story of forgiveness. I find each time I randomly select a book, it usually speaks to me and says something I need to hear. Forgiveness is not easy to give even when it is for my own good. And is a daily struggle for me.
I would have much rather had George, the dead husband be a mentor to a fatherless girl rather than a man who betrayed his wife and family, because when you have an affair you betray your spouse, your children, parents, in-laws and friends. Adultery casts a wide net of harm.
Santa Montefiore does though always seem to include a love for flowers and gardens and secret romances. This was a good time filler.

O prostie de carte, sincer..
Știam că autoarea nu scrie capodopere, dar are cărți ușurele, menite să te scoată din RS. Asta m-a băgat efectiv într-o stare aiurea.. jumătate de carte am citit printre rânduri, nerăbdătoare să termin odată porcăria asta. Dacă nu vreți spoilere, nu citiți mai departe!
Phaedra apare la înmormântarea lui George, pretinzând că este fiica nelegitimă a acestuia, care a mai si primit o avere drept moștenire. Inițial șocată, familia decedatului decide ulterior să o cunoască mai bine. Printr-un plot twist deloc surprinzător sau Șocant, aflăm că Phaedra este de fapt amanta defunctului.. lucru deloc șocant, dat fiind faptul că pe tot parcursul cărții cei trei fii ai mortului (presupușii frați vitregi) sunt în limbă după tânără..
Iar happy ending-ul ales de autoare m-a scârbit efectiv. Amanta soțului devine noră si toată lumea aplaudă ca foca de bucurie.. Penibil! Nu dau de obicei recenzii negative, dar cartea asta a fost prea de tot..

This book is excellent. I couldn’t put it down and read it in about 4 days, which is fast for me. The story really captures you and then there is a twist almost at the end of the book. I would highly recommend reading it!

Üdini naistekas – mitte kõige hullem, küll, aga siiski 😄 Nii etteaimatav juba peale 50lk teadsin, mis seal lõpus saab, sest see esikaane kirjeldus andis oma kahe lausega juba selleks piisavalt ainest. Õnneks oli kiire lugemine ja täitsa tore ka, pani huvi tundma, kuidas see lõngakera lahti harutatakse.
Inglise "vana" jõuka perekonna lord sureb ootamatult ning tema matustel tutvub pere ootamatult tema tütrega, kellest seni keegi midagi ei teadnud. Phaedra on imekaunis ja jääb matustel silma perekonna vanimale pojale Danielile. Perekond võtab õe/tütre võrdlemisi hästi vastu ning ta hakkab nende seltsis aega veetma ning kõik on temast võlutud, eriti Daniel, kes tunneb, et on oma poolõesse armumas. Ainus, kes Phaedrast ei vaimustu on keskmise perepoja abikaasa, kes arvab, et ta on petis ning soovib lihtsalt rikkalikku pärandust ... nii ja naa, rahast ja juveelidest Phaedra ei hooli, küll aga surnud lordist ja nüüd ka tema vanimast pojast. Lõpp on muidugi sugar coated hollywoodilik ja kõik on rõõmsad.

Lo que no contaban es que justo el día del funeral de George Frampton será revelado un gran secreto que unirá a todos…
La historia es algo trillada, no se las voy a contar, pero no ofrece nada novedoso. Montefiore es demasiado descriptiva y puede resultar por momentos una lectura tediosa, aún así logra darle ciertos giros interesantes en la trama aunque predecibles. Un punto a su favor es la atmósfera creada por su pluma, es grandiosa, puedes observar el gran paisaje desde “El Capricho” y disfrutar de la naturaleza bebiendo té, escuchar los sonidos ambientales de la noche o sentirte en la calidez de una casa y sus habitantes.
Los personajes me han gustado, me parecieron muy reales, no faltan los villanos que aportan un aire de intriga y misterio en la historia, que los odias pero al final haces empatía con ellos pues su lado bondadoso sale a flote. Cada uno tiene un crecimiento personal y lo mejor es el mensaje que nos ofrece la novela en reiteradas ocasiones: el perdón. Perdonar a los demás y también perdonarse a uno mismo para vivir en paz.
La portada es muy sencilla, quiero pensar que se trata de Phaedra y que el color amarillo (el cual está presente en la historia) adquiere un significado aún mayor; en lo personal no me resulta atractiva.

Wanneer Lord Frampton, George, overlijdt ligt het Engelse landgoed Fairfield Park er stil bij. Niemand weet dat een onbekende gast voor opschudding zal zorgen.
Aan het einde van de uitvaartplechtigheid meldt Phaedra, de buitenechtelijke dochter van George, zich. Behalve dit nieuws blijkt ze nog eens onweerstaanbaar mooi te zijn én is ze toegevoegd aan het testament.
Waarom komt de familie dit op deze manier te weten? Had George haar niet eerder kunnen introduceren?
David, de zoon des huizes, heeft zijn oog op haar laten vallen, hoewel hij beseft hoe gevaarlijk dit is…
Ik las dit boek naar aanleiding van een artikel in De Standaard, waar het boek twee sterren kreeg. Het boek werd niet slecht bevonden, zeker niet, maar deze krant beweert zich meer te richten op literatuur en kan dus geen hoge punten geven aan zulke boeken. (Over het algemeen merk ik van die literatuur niet veel, dus ik tel er automatisch twee sterren bij op.)
De recensent vond het een zeer ontspannend boek, vol drama, maar met een weinig suggestieve stijl.
Eigenlijk kwamen mijn bevindingen volledig overeen met die van De standaard. Dit boek is heerlijk ontspannend en kan altijd gelezen worden. Het is lichte lectuur die je in een drukke periode even kan doen wegdromen en die even goed geschikt is om op een terrasje te lezen.
Phaedra heeft al meteen iets magisch over zich en komt over als de perfecte dochter. Al vanaf het begin heb je door dat er iets meer achter zit en de aandachtige lezer heeft na een tijdje ook wel door wat, maar dat stoorde niet, want je wist immers niet hoe de gebeurtenissen verder zouden verlopen.
Het is een boek vol drama en gevoelens worden dan ook tot in de puntjes beschreven. Dit vond ik niet erg, maar het gaf wel geen blijk van veel stijl.
Over het einde had ik gemengde gevoelens. Het verhaal eindigde zoals verwacht, maar de epiloog vond ik er teveel aan. Daarin werd nog eens een haastige omschrijving gedaan van een happy family. Dat hoefde voor mij niet. Met het hoofdstuk ervoor kon ik zelf wel al voorstellen hoe het verder zou gaan en ik gebruik ook graag mijn verbeelding.
Alles samengevat vind ik dit boek voor zijn genre heel leuk en ik ben vastbesloten om nog vele andere boeken van Santa Montefiore te lezen. Het boek krijgt van mij 5 sterren, omdat het verhaal zo vlot en ontspannend is.

I read a review in a newspaper almost a year ago about Santa Montefiore's work. The review was glowing, writing lovingly of her prose and character construction.
I have to say that I found myself only partly agreeing with both statements after purchasing this book. While Montefiore's writing is certainly engrossing, with wonderfully descriptive (albeit sometimes repetitive) landscapes and enthralling characters, this book leaned - as it progressed - into predictable and annoying.
The family the plot centres around is written wonderfully. All are three-dimensional and easily likeable, despite their shortcomings.
My problem, then, lies with mostly with the main female protagonist, Phaedra, and the predictability of the plot. Phaedra stands out not because she is well-written, but because every single person in the book falls in love with her as a person; a love so unwavering, it stays put even after her big revelation. In this way, I found it very hard to like her character, despite having liked her at the beginning.
It just could've been much better.

La he leído hasta el final, me interesaba saber cómo se solucionaba todo, pero no me ha enganchado, no me ha intrigado, y se ha quedado como en una lectura más. Simplemente en eso. Sin embargo, que a mí no me haya resultado una lectura enriquecedora no significa que a ti te pase lo mismo. Puede que esta novela sea justo lo que necesitas para desconectar o que a ti sí que te llegue a emocionar.

La verdad es que mucho no me gusto, es como una novela de las que venden en los puestos de periódicos solo que con el triple de páginas. La historia es irreal y sin sentido. Lo único que si me gusto es que tiene unos diálogos enormes pero muy bien hechos, muy bien ligados, es lo único que vale la pena. De los personajes la abuela vale algo la pena, pero la protagonista era detestable le lavaron el cerebro y le metieron al clon de Paulo cohelo, si así de infumable es esta mujer.

Could have used 100+ pages edited out, and really how many times can one author use the word "frisson?" But sometimes it is just as enjoyable to be annoyed by a book as like a book, and this was one of those cases. Very "Downton Abbey-ish" but modern. Lots of foreshadowing that led to the obvious. Incredibly redundant, but not a total waste of time. :)

Gelukkig heb ik dit boek van de bibliotheek geleend want ik heb het niet eens uitgelezen . Toen ik zo'n 70/80 bladzijden gevorderd was begon ik een vermoeden te krijgen hoe het zou eindigen en heb maar vast zo hier en daar wat stukjes van de laatste hoofdstukken gelezen . Het was zelfs nog erger dan ik dacht , jakkes gewoon brrr...

I really enjoy Santa's writing style; she has a great ability for getting you to connect with the characters. You can really picture the setting. The only reason I gave a 4 not a 5 is due to the fact I preferred The French Gardener and maybe would have liked to see more of a commupence to Julius the lawyer. I'm definitely going to read more of hers.

A good, fast read that kept my attention but in the middle it lagged a bit and the outcome was predictable. Characters were well draw and the use of some new words for me kept me on my toes and in my dictionary. I enjoyed the setting in England and the use of English words and culture that were unique to the British.

Ik vond dit boek leuk, maar niet super speciaal. Dit is zo een boek dat ideaal is om te lezen op het strand, of op vakantie. Het is gemakkelijk, leest lekker weg maar eigenlijk gebeurt er heel weinig.
De personages waren goed uitgewerkt, en de omgeving werd zo levendig beschreven. Hierdoor krijg je echt het gevoel alsof je zelf deel uitmaakt van de familie Frampton.

Thoroughly enjoyed this one - only my second by this author and I felt it was a better read than The House by the Sea. Can't wait to read her latest book now.
