This cover was really cluttered and gave Amazon vibes. Thankfully, I can say that the writing inside is much better than the cover but why did such a big publisher do him so dirty?

This is the first prompt book I've read and I actually really appreciated it. Tropes are so important to stories and Erik Patterson delves into 30+ tropes that you can play around with in any fashion you like. I did like this style and I think it's more efficient than scrolling through TVtropes.org but it's impossible to have a book hold all the tropes. It's a good stepping stone for some of the biggest ones in the genre and you can dive more into the world of tropes through this.

The blue font gave me Shiver trauma, but it's not that bad and ended up working better than black would have.

This book is set up in a very organized, clean way. It's not cluttered or overwhelming, actually it's very approachable for the beginner. It does focus more on the romance side than the fantasy side, and he believes all fantasy books with a romance in them are romantasy, so it's a little gimmicky/trendy. There is a nuance and sometimes the romantasy label is just a marketing ploy, sometimes it's actually true. I understand it's not always up to the writer but at the same time, if Diana Gabaldon can fight for her books then there is a distinction.

I'm glad I found this at my library and I would suggest you check your local library or his TikTok before deciding to buy.

I read this book to see if it explained why I don't usually like romantasy novels.

I love fantasy and like romance novels so a mash-up of the two should absolutely be my part of the shelf. Some of my favourite authors / series / novels would, if published now, probably be located within this marketing genre. Yet 90% of the books I have tried in this genre I find execrable, usually giving up about 20-30 pages in.

I digress - this 'how to' book starts with creating characters and world building, then the 25 tropes (not all unique to romantasy) which are components of the genre. With prompts. (Another aside for writers - I tried it out and wrote about 2,000 words, had a lot of fun).

Did I find out why I so often dislike romantasy? Yes, actually. There are some tropes which I loathe and as soon as spotted I will cease and desist reading a novel - Secret Royalty, Arranged Marriage, Hidden Power / Chosen One, Touch her and die, and then a few that rarely rise above the standard pattern. Unfortunately these tropes, coupled with Mary Sue main characters, abound in romantasy so I have to sample many to find the few.

For anyone looking to get creative juices flowing, this extends beyond romantasy to prompts that will spark ideas while making you smile. It's perfect for professional writers, those curious about starting, fans who love romantasy (or fantasy), students, and holiday gifts (I ordered 4 for this reason)! For me, I've been working on a manuscript for years but had a few holes to fill in. In addition to those, I was surprised that this actually gave me ideas that I wasn't even planning on including. Also, I love the look of it; it's not a dry text book but a lush saga which transports you out of daily life. Could not love it more and I say that already owning some of the other prompt books by this author that are totally unique in their own ways while remaining an invaluable universal tool.

Great ideas for writing, you can learn more aspects regarding romantasy. The only flaw is that it seems as if spicy scenes were necessary to make a good story.
