Quite possibly one of the most boring books I’ve ever read. Everything was also very predictable. The ending was very unsatisfying.

We’re talking about this infamous death at the party, you’d think the setting would be at this party and yet the “party” is only for the last 5 chapters. The first 200 pages were so hard to get through.

I’m willing to give another one of her books a shot but I really did not enjoy reading this. It was one of those books that was short enough to finish that I was forcing myself to read at least 1 chapter a day to try and get through it and finish it to be able to move onto something else.

Great writing and even better pace. The story takes place over the course of a single day, but a lifetime of information is delivered to you through worries, reminiscences and secrets. The author gives you just enough information to have your own suspicions about the characters, but never gives away so much that you know what's about to happen.

Great book. Kept me interested and I kept reading and reading until done. I do wish the end was a little better explained, with greater detail.

About the book: It’s a standalone that follows Nadine Walsh, who throws a birthday party for her mother but finds herself standing over a dead body in the basement while her guests clink glasses upstairs. In the morning, Nadine makes last-minute preparations before she welcomes more than a hundred guests to her home. But her husband is of little help, her two grown children are consumed with their own concerns, and her mother knows that today isn’t just a birthday party. It marks another anniversary as well. Nadine’s head is swirling with secrets, memories, and concerns about what might happen tonight.

First impressions: I like the title and cover. The premise sounded interesting to me. The beginning introduces the characters and sets the stage for the rest of the story. The pacing is slower at the start, but it picks up over time.

Characters: I enjoyed learning more about Nadine and her backstory. There are multiple characters with different storylines. I wasn’t as invested in them as I wanted to be. Some of the secondary characters aren’t that likeable or relatable.

Quote:

“When someone you love gets hurt, you rehash everything that led up to it.”

Writing: The book is about 330 pages with short chapters. The second half is more eventful and interesting than the first. I predicted some events, but a couple of twists took me by surprise. The story takes place over a single day, but there are flashbacks to the past.

Final thoughts: The ending wraps up some loose ends, but it doesn’t tie everything up with a neat bow. I didn’t enjoy A Death at the Party as much as I expected to, but if you’re a fan of contemporary domestic thrillers, you may like it more than I did.
