Ragnar Hovland is a Norwegian novelist, essayist, lyricist, translator, and writer of children's books.
He graduated from the University of Bergen with a degree in English and French literature, and debuted in 1979 with the novel «Alltid fleire dagar». Hovland writes in nynorsk.
He has received several awards for his authorship.
He was awarded the Brage Prize in 1992 for the children's book «Ein motorsykkel i natta». He received the Norwegian Critics Prize for Literature in 2001, for the novel «Ei vinterreise».
Hovland is also a musician; he is the keyboardist and singer of the band Dei Nye Kapellanane. He has translated Stephen Sondheim's musical «Sweeney Todd» into nynorsk for Det Norske Teatret in 2015.
In celebration of his 60th birthday in 2012, several Norwegian musicians came together to compose music for a number of his writings, and a compilation album was released called «Valgets Kvaler».
In May 2008 Hovland was a composer for Bergen International Festoval, an annual international music and cultural festival in Bergen, Norway.
