I thought that this book would maybe be funny, BUT...

It wasn't! It was just annoying.

I made myself finish reading it, BUT...

I wish that I hadn't wasted my time.

Eddie who lives in Halibut Bay where hats are rare and people have cold heads encounters a series of chores that he has to complete. The story goes on by the conjunction "but", which provides solutions to solve problems and shift one scene to other scenes. The main issue is to prepare a party for pirates on behalf of Aunt Sue who was hurt while she was making socks. Without expecting a captain of the pirates would only have one leg, Eddie prepares a pair of socks as a birthday gift. Instead of hurting the captain’s feeling, he improvises that one sock is for a leg and the other sock is for a head as a hat.
The readers may enjoy the story of this book by guessing how to solve the problems or what would happen after the previous story. The conjunction "but" is a cue to expect the next story. It is clever to improvise ideas to escape the confronted issues, but at the same time, I wish he could think of other ways to tell the truth and ask favors because he does not know the captain would only have one leg. This is a children’s book, and readers may not take it seriously, but I am concerned about the way he solves the problem. Sometimes improvising could be a good solution, but it could be a poor excuse to others and could hurt their feelings if the excuse effects the person negatively. So, I imagined what if Eddie confessed the truth and asked understanding of the captain. Regarding illustrations, the artwork reminded me of newspaper cartoons in the 90s.

One day in chilly Halibut Bay, “where hats were hard to come by and people had cold heads,” Eddie along with Phil, his dog plan to go fishing. But Eddie’s dad tells them to cancel their fishing plans, because Aunt Sue has tripped on some yarn while knitting a pair of socks, She’s fallen and broken her leg. She needs help. So, Eddie and Phil set sail across the Bay to aid Aunt Sue as dad shouts, “Watch out for pirates!” When they arrive an anxious Aunt Sue shouts at them to hurry, because there’s a long list of chores to be done and a party to be prepared. It’s a pirate birthday party for Aunt Sue’s friend Captain Rugbeard. He and his crew of pirates are expected soon, and he expects a party and “a good present or he’ll be furious.” Eddie and dog start making a cake, but what should they do about getting a good present for a pirate? All Aunt Sue has at home for presents are the colorful socks she’s knitted.

How many uses can you think of for a sock? I put them on my feet... oh! and I dust with the old ones that have holes. Most inventions are happy accidents. This is exactly what happens to Eddie and his dog Phil.

A book for older children, Eddie and Phil live in a town where hats are scarce. The two are on their way to fish BUT! Eddie's dad sends them off to aunt Sue's to help her out. Every time there seems to be an end to Eddie and Phil's problem there's always a BUT! waiting around the corner, extending the story. As in life, but's can go on forever never leading us to solve an issue.

Absurdity abounds in this story of a boy who has to do chores for his aunt. BUT one of the chores is preparing a party for pirates. This involves finding an appropriate pirate gift. BUT that's hard when you didn't get much advance notice. A set of socks will have to do BUT it turns out the pirate has a peg leg. He's going to be insulted by the gift. All could end badly BUT the boy is a quick thinker. The story dodges from one problem to another with whacky illustrations and ridiculous notions. Silliness abounds.

Truth be told, I thought I was going to hate the art. But this is SO well-written, and the people of Halibut Bay “where hats were hard to come by and people had cold heads” won me over. Eddie, the hero of our tale, has to throw a birthday party for a pirate because his Aunt Sue tripped on some yarn and broke her leg. Cake and balloons are covered, but what birthday gift can he get for a pirate with zero notice? Hamilton provides a happy ending with an extra laugh, and my kiddo at age 7 was delighted with this.

This is an engaging story for children with longer attention spans - just when you think you know what's going to happen, there's a curve ball thrown in! Each page ends with a BUT and the story continues. It's fun and a good way to build narrative skills.

Eddie is just trying to have a fun weekend fishing, BUT! Through series of silly and serendipitous events, Eddie spends the weekend doing chores for his aunt and making life better for a lot of people in Halibut Bay.

Illustrations are great.

A funny cause-and-effect story of socks, pirates, and hats! It's a wee-bit long, but kids and adults who spend the time to get to the very end will have a good laugh!
