That fatal accident should have ended Sora's life.

Instead of dying, though, Sora wakes up in the body of a royal maid on Artania – this is a realm where monsters are real and exist next to humans, humans who have hunted omegas for generations.

While dancing with someone at the Midwinter Ball, his mask shatters, and Sora is shocked to see she's been dancing with the Dragon King himself. Suddenly silver scales shimmer beneath her own skin – thus exposing her own forbidden nature and revealing her to be the very Luna that has been prophesied and the Dragon King has been searching for.

Sora is now caught between Artania's warring kingdoms, and Sora must surrender to the burning claim of the dragon to save not only his people but the king himself – or she can deny the fire that has been awakened in her own blood and ever finding a way back home.

Beneath Scales and Shadows is a fresh and new romantasy standalone. It delivers a scorching isekai portal fantasy that's set in a world of warring kingdoms, deadly monsters, light omegaverse themes, and a possessive dragon hero who's going to set the world on fire for his mate.

I loved the tropes that Tera Nova used in Beneath Scales and Shadows: Slow Burn, Dragon Shifters, Reincarnation.

This is the first book by Tera Nova that I've read, and I loved it. From the very first page, the action kicks off, and it doesn't let up through the entire book. This is something that I love in a book. It keeps your attention and keeps you reading and makes you want to know more and makes you want to know what happens next.

Sora was pushed onto the subway tracks. That should have been it. That should have been the end of Sora. But, then Sora wakes up in the body of a royal servant in the realm of Artania. This is a realm where monsters and humans exist next to each other, and humans have been hunting omegas for generations. Sora's arrival in this servants body has caused the dragon shifter blood in her to wake up, changing her into a dragon omega.
During the Midwinter Ball, Sora's dance partner's mask slips and falls revealing himself to actually be the Dragon King himself and in this revelation the silver scales beneath Sora's skin start to shimmer – in this she exposes her nature that is actually forbidden but at the same time the Dragon King realizes that she is the very Luna that he has been searching for his entire life.

The Dragon King, his advisers, and even his friends soon start to think that with Sora's reincarnation and the fact that she's an omega and has dragon blood in her, she could actually be the prophesied twice born Luna.

I am a sucker for dragon shifter stories. Actually, I love any good shifter story. But, I have this soft spot for dragons, I don't know what it is about dragons, I just love these mythical creatures. And I absolutely loved this story. Honestly, I feel like this could still be turned into a series, and it could be continued, although the ending was still perfect for a standalone.

I loved the world building. I found it to be stunning, and I wish I could go back to it. I want to learn more about the history and the mythos. I would love to learn more about the portals and the other people who live in this world.

I loved the character development with the exception of one thing. When Sora wakes up in the world, she is so calm, like it was expected. If it were me, I would have been freaking out and trying to figure out what happened, where I was, and how I could get home as fast as I could.

Other than that, I was really impressed with this book, and I would highly recommend it to anyone who enjoys a romantasy, a standalone fantasy, and wants to read a new author. I can't wait to see what Tera Nova writes next, and I will be reading it.

Tera Nova delivers a breathtaking standalone romantasy in Beneath Scales and Shadows, blending lush worldbuilding, raw emotional intensity, and an unforgettable slow-burn romance in a story that’s equal parts fierce and tender.

Set in the war-torn realm of Artania, this novel immediately grips you with its immersive isekai premise—our protagonist, a woman ripped from her familiar world, is dropped into a dangerous land of dragons, magic, and ancient prophecies. But this isn’t just another “chosen one” trope—it’s deeper, darker, and more emotional, as the heroine must confront not only a new world but a past she doesn’t fully understand. Her journey of self-discovery and resilience unfolds against a backdrop of political tension, otherworldly forces, and the unshakable pull of fate.

At the heart of the story lies the dragon shifter hero—a broody, possessive, and deeply scarred male whose protective instincts are as fiery as his dragon form. Their relationship is a slow burn laced with tension, mistrust, and undeniable chemistry. Nova handles the romance with care, layering it with themes of trust, healing, and the weight of destiny. The omegaverse-inspired dynamics add a layer of primal intensity to the bond without overshadowing the emotional connection between the characters.

What makes this book stand out is the complexity of its world. Nova has crafted a realm that feels ancient and alive, where shadows conceal truths and scales aren’t just armor but symbols of power, loss, and transformation. The lore is rich without being overwhelming, and the prose is poetic yet grounded—evoking vivid visuals and emotions in every scene.

Themes of reincarnation, forbidden love, and the morality of power thread through the plot, adding depth to what could have been a straightforward fantasy romance. Instead, Beneath Scales and Shadows challenges its characters—and readers—to ask: Can love be a weapon? Can fate be rewritten?

If you're a fan of:

Dragon shifters with a dark, possessive edge 🐉

Isekai/fish-out-of-water fantasy heroines 💫

Slow-burn, emotionally charged romance 🔥

Deep lore and beautifully written worldbuilding 📜

Tropes like fated mates, reincarnation, enemies-to-lovers, or forbidden love ❤️

…then this book will absolutely devour you.

Tera Nova’s voice is distinct, magnetic, and utterly addictive. Beneath Scales and Shadows isn’t just a story—it’s an experience. One that lingers long after the final page.

📚 A must-read for romantasy lovers seeking something bold, haunting, and beautifully written.

What an amazing, standalone novel from Tera Nova. Beneath Scales and Shadows immediately captivated me with the storyline and continued to hold me captive with the character development, the romance that ignites within it, and the world she creates within the pages. I could not put this book down and am already looking for more from Tera and this universe she has created.

Sora wakes up in a body that isn’t her own. She is also in a world where monsters and humans exist together, however humans hunt omegas. As she gets to know this new world, she finds herself at a ball where she discovers she is dancing with the Dragon King. In fact, she is the Luna he has been searching for and this awakens powers of her own. Being caught between warring kingdoms, she now has to choose between the intense feeling she has for the Dragon King or finding her way home.

The Dragon King can’t believe he may have found his Luna. The prophecy of being an omega, having dragon’s blood, and being twice born are all true about the beauty he is dancing with. When he “claims” her, the tension, slow burn, and undeniable chemistry take hold and these two ignite. Tera does an excellent job of these two growing closer together and ensuring the romance is handled with care. It is a perfect blend of primal instinct and a true connection being formed.

Tera’s world building talents shine throughout this book. The realm is complex, intricate, and dynamic. Giving readers a world that feels old and powerful, while still bursting with life and people who want to thrive. I loved the themes that run this book; mainly the ones surrounding love. You don’t know if the unknown or known will win out until the very end. I definitely cannot wait for more of this series and will definitely be adding Tera to my TBR as a must read author.

As always, review any author notes before reading.

Tropes :

Reincarnation

After being pushed onto the subway tracks, Sora awakens in a royal servant's body on Artania—a realm where monsters exist alongside humans who hunt omegas for generations. Sora's revival in the servants body has awakened the dragon shifter blood in her, changing to a dragon omega.

When her dance partner's mask shatters during the Midwinter Ball, revealing the Dragon King himself, silver scales shimmer beneath her skin—exposing her forbidden nature and the very Luna he's searched for all his life.

Friends and the Dragon King realize that with her reincarnation and being an omega with dragon blood, she may be the twice born Luna of an ancient prophecy.

Now caught between Artania's warring kingdoms, Sora must choose:
Surrender to the dragon's burning claim, thus saving him and his people—or deny the fire awakening in her blood and ever finding a way back home.

I love stories with dragons ( and dragon shifters), but I had a little trouble connecting with this story. For me personally, I feel standalones are difficult, especially fantasy. An author has to create and end an entire world in less than 500 pages.
There were some questions I had with the world building and some of the character development. For example, Sora is transported to a whole new world and is so calm about it. Like I would be losing my mind.. How is she not questioning it or freaking out more.
However, I feel the second half of the book is better developed and more enjoyable. I found Ember an interesting side character. And the reading scene...🔥

Tera Nova's book Beneath Scales and Shadows, is the first book in the Lost Lunas of Artania series, and truly does an amazing job bringing such a fantastic new world to life.

Readers are immediately gripped by the possibility of dragons having lived in our past, but the possibility of them still being alive gives us a hope we don't realize we want until me meet Ignis, the King of the Dragons, determined to protect his people at all costs, but not at the cost of his newly found mate, Sora. Together, Ignis and Sora, along with their fellow dragons and other allies, stand against the tyranny that threatens to destroy everything they love once and for all, but at what cost?

Ms. Nova's writing is so descriptive and ensares the readers so thoroughly, they feel like they are living inside a motion picture instead of reading a book. Her style of writing while definitely modern, may also seem a bit old school to some readers (think Grace Livington Hill in the way she flows and charms her audience).

Beneath Scales and Shadows is beautiful, not just in it's storytelling, but in it's descriptive elements and use of grammar too. While the story is a fun, easy read, the readers will find almost nothing to complain about. For fans of Rebecca Yaros, Briar Boleyn, and Emberly Ash, Tera Nova's Beneath Scales and Shadows is a must read!

Beneath Scales and Shadows sets up an amazing new fantasy world to explore - and introduces other species outside of the dragons in which Tera could expand the universe to.

It is a slow burn - but the story needed to be in order for the world building to unfold. I would've been upset if it was a lusty fast burn, especially with how the heroine came into this world.

If you're a fan of iskaei(reincarnation) romances, fantasy / monster romances, and/or omegaverse romances with a mature heroine (I believe Sora mentioned she was 32, which made sense with how she reacted to things happening around her - a breath of fresh air compared to the teenage/low 20s stories that usually dominate these genres).

I loved the world building - and the character development. This standalone could've easily been a duet/trilogy with everything going on. The couple sex scenes were steamy and tasteful.

I can't wait to see what Tera has in store for the rest of the universe - and when we will meet any future Lunas soon!

Good book, needs a little work...

Beneath Scales and Shadows is a great book with a very good plot. It does need work on the spelling and grammar. There are numerous words that are incorrect or used at the wrong time. Example: integrated was used when interrogated was the proper one to use. There are many misspelled words. One name was mixed Thornel with Thorntooth.

The plot is strong but the information through the book changes, making it harder to follow. Example: Ignis was stating he was a few hundred years old, 500 years was mentioned with no follow up. But, towards the end of the book he is a hundred years old. He also stated the clan used to be in the thousands but is now less than 200 hundred. But towards the end of the book they mention hundreds - plural usually means 2+, so in the hundreds means 200+ - took flight.

There does need work to fix up the plot to make it a great book. Not sure if you used an editor but you definitely need to recheck everything.

Can't wait for the next standalone.

Okay, so I have to admit this is my first monster romance in its full glory so bear that in mind as you go through this review.

That said, the romance between Sora and Ignis is definitely believable and very much emotionally heartfelt. If you’re a big Beauty and the Beast fan-- then this is definitely for you. It’s just not for me, I think.

The concept of the world though has so much potential especially if it’s something that will be explored in future books. The prophesy being fulfilled, the political warfare. A lot of potentials that left me wanting a little bit.

I’m more curious about their allies and honestly about Ember and Coal’s relationship. There are a lot of interesting side-characters that I wish were explored as well as action scenes that could’ve been fleshed out to make this an even better read.

I could easily overlook these but like I said, the romance just wasn’t enough for me too.

Do check it out and see if it’s for you.

This is a beautiful story about a second chance at life and finding where oneself belongs.

Sora wakes up in a new world when she dies in her old world and is given a second chance at life. She wants to go home but things change when a handsome man's mask shatters and it's revealed that he's the dragon king and that he is trying to protect the omegas. There are battles and subterfuge, along with an irresistible dragon king who does his best to woo his mate. He also helps her grow into everything she's capable of. This is the beginning of change for Artania and the royals are not happy about it.

I was rooting for Sora the entire book, even though there were times I wanted to smack her and tell her to stop being stupid. I was awing, laughing, and crying throughout. I'm ready for the second book to be released.

There are some themes in this book that can be triggering. Please read the content warning before starting this book.

This book took a unique approach to the plot that I’ve not yet come across, and for that alone I give it kudos.

Further, it has the following tropes/sub-tropes:
✅ Fated Mates
✅ Omegaverse
✅ Heat
✅ Dragon shifters
✅ Mating while MMC in 🐉 form
✅ Soul bonding

The MMC is pretty much “all in” from the start and is extremely cautious about getting consent for everything.

Even though this has all of my favourite tropes, I struggled to get through the book as some parts felt a little repetitive and it dragged a little for me. There were some choices made that didn’t always make sense to me, and then the ending came very abruptly with a lot of open questions (which I’m sure we’ll hear more about in book 2 once that is released). Book ends with a HFN.

This was really different from what I had been reading lately and I really liked it. Tera Nova gives us a unique experience and look into a new world. I loved how she put the story together and while it was a bit of insta live it was a slower paced romance that I really enjoyed. The main character, Sora, really stands out and is quite unlike other characters in Tera Nova’s worlds. She is strong and confident and despite being new to the universe she has traveled to and occasionally somewhat uncertain of her role there now, she never really lacks strength and resiliency. I am really looking forward to the next book in this world.

The spice is very steamy and I enjoyed reading it. It was so good! The dragon king is super hot and possessive. He worships the ground she walks on. He is her monster. I gave my soul to the dragon king.
In this world the monsters hunt the omegas.
Luna was reincarnated. She is his prophecy.
Read to find out if they save the dragon race.

My favorite trope: Who did this to you.

Tropes:
Monster Romance
Beauty and the Beast
Light Omega verse Themes
Fantasy Romance
Dragon Hero with 2 $$
Strangers to Friends to Lovers
Different worlds

Sora is a historian and enamored with the past. She wakes in a strange world after an accident that should have killed her. She must navigate the shock of it all while also discovering that she is a luna, a twice born omega.

Read if you like:
-Dragon Shifters
-Fated Mates
-Prophecy

I liked Beneath Scales and Shadows. What dragon shifter loving romance reader wouldn't want to be in Sora's shoes? Please transport me out of this modern hellscape and into that world. I would love a fated mate, please and thank you. It was a great mental escape and I loved that Sora found where she belonged.

This book was a good read that kept me engaged until the very end. The development of the characters and events that occurred were written in a way that was easy to follow. While the world development just started I can’t wait to see what happens in the next book of this series.

Really enjoyed this story. Good world building. Really interesting plot and portal jump premise. It's a slooooowwwwww burn and you won't get them fully getting together til the end of the book. But then you get three chapters basically of them sealing their bond...in ALL his forms 🥵🥵🥵 great book for lovers of monster smut and omegas.

P.S. thanks to the author and Literary Inspired PR for my ARC

I thoroughly enjoyed this unique Monster Romance centred largely on dragons and humans. The prophecy, light omegaverse themes, and beauty and the beast vibes combined with the possessive dragon, danger and battles stopped me putting it down. I found the style and flow of the book just right, and the emotional engagement was so deep that I actually gasped out loud when shocked by occurrences, and felt the fear and panic in moments of danger. Dragons, destiny, reincarnation and rebirth, not to mention transformation and finding your true home, it has it all. It doesn't skip the romance either, including some quite spicy interspecies scenes eventually too. This was my first book by this author, and I look forward to exploring more of their works.
