Award winning and USA Today bestselling author Alina K. Field earned a Bachelor of Arts Degree in English and German literature, but prefers the much happier world of romance fiction. Though her roots are in the Midwestern U.S., after six very, very, very cold years in Chicago, she moved to Southern California where she shares a midcentury home with her husband and her spunky blonde rescued terrier.
This anthology includes ten authors; I am familiar with some of them. I purchased the book because it included stories by Jude Knight, Mary Lancaster, Meara Platt, and Caroline Warfield.
Unfortunately, the "Casebook" comments that are sprinkled after each story are stupid and add nothing to the book. Another criticism I have is that the proofreading was below par; these stories are interconnected. The proofer did not correct the mistakes between the stories. In CHARRED HOPE, Tessa Fleming has a son. In the following story, it mentions she had two children.
One Good Wager Leads to Another (Barbara Monajem) -- VG Thisbe Rose is a young widow who has moved into a cottage left to her by her deceased soldier-husband. Mrs. Wix, who becomes her housekeeper, is actually a British male spy playing the role as part of a wager. However, they met four years before at a ball. This is a complicated plot that is hard to explain.
My Gift to You (Mary Lancaster) -- G I despise misunderstanding stories; the only thing that makes this story believable is that Leo Corey waits until Gaby Raymond is nineteen to marry her (thus, she is very young). They don't talk enough about what is essential, and hence, the misunderstandings.
Falling Into You (Sherry Ewing) -- G Milton leaves England to save his father's income. However, he tells his intended to find another husband. One year later, Milton returns to find Josephine ready to marry someone else. He jumps into the fray to get Josephine back. Nothing amazing here.
Sir Westcott Steals a Heart (Alina K. Field) -- E Sir Westcott Twisden meets the tallest woman he's ever seen, but she is busy trying to save her property from an unscrupulous loan-holder and acting as a smuggler to protect her three stepbrothers. There's plenty of action, and the tale is amusing and enjoyable.
A Duke In Peril (Meara Platt) -- VG When Lady Florence finds a badly wounded soldier along the road, she gets involved in the soldier's efforts to ferret out the traitor in the Home Office. This is a quick, engaging story, but it suffers from some corny dialogue between the H and h.
Stolen Kisses (Cerise DeLand) -- G+ Ten years ago, Lance Winters kissed Emma Tomkins in a way that scandalized the ton. Lance went to war, and Emma retired to the country. Now, Lance is back and has inherited lands and money. He wants Emma, but she still feels the chill of the ton's displeasure. For the ton to still have a poor opinion of Emma after ten years seemed a bit weak to hang a story on.
Charred Hope (Caroline Warfield) -- E Now out of the army, Titus Brannock is at loose ends. He found a discarded miniature of Tessa Fleming, a woman who followed the drum with her husband until his death. Thinking she would want the damaged treasure, he returns it to her. However, meeting her again changes Titus's life.
Love by Moonlight (Elizabeth Ellen Carter) -- E This story focuses on a figure who has appeared in many of these short stories -- Captain Robin Somerville. He is out of the military and staying with his older brother and wife. He has taken on the role of Captain Moonlight, who rights wrongs and helps people experiencing poverty. This novella has the most action of all I've read so far.
.Forever and Always (Rue Allyn) -- VG Years ago, Lord Fontus married Lady Deoiridh to protect her from another man. They separated immediately after. Now, Lord Fontus' brother wants him to marry Lady Beatrix (to end animosity between the two families). However, Lord Fontus does not know if he is still married and must seek out Lady Dee (Deoiridh) to ascertain their marital status.
A Bend in the Road (Jude Knight) -- E Two years earlier, Justin Weatherall and Lady Felicity Belvoir fell in love in Brussels. However, Justin left her without a word of goodbye. She finds Justin (now a teacher in a village school) and wants to know what happened. He explains that he is a poor ex-sailor and that she is a wealthy lady. Can love conquer all?
One Good Wager Leads to Another, by Barbara Monajem Thisbe a young widow escaping her father. Gervaise a spy in disguise. A long-ago but never-forgotten kiss. Ghosts & Ghostie A very good start to the collection with a second chance romance, wagers & a heroine with a good sense of smell
My Gift to You, by Mary Lancaster The Marquis & Marchioness of Corey married quickly & have grown apart but each hopes a house party can rekindle the flame. I loved this one, secrets abound plus if only they’d talked to each other.
Falling Into You, by Sherry Ewing Milton & Josephine have grown close & she’s hoping for a proposal then he drops the bombshell he’s leaving to oversee some oversea investments & would be away for at least a year. Milton returns still in love with Josephine but she’s moved on. Can he win her back? Another lovely novella, with some humour, a little angst. If only Milton had been open with Josephine.
Sir Westcott Steals a Heart, by Alina K. Field Sir Westcott Twisden didn’t know he wanted to marry until the tallest lady he’d ever met crossed his path. I loved Sybil & Westcott & loved their story
A Duke In Peril, by Meara Platt Lady Florence's life is upended when she finds James Ryder, a handsome wounded soldier on the road. Another cracker he’s not whom he seems & she’s a delight. Wonderful chemistry & banter
Stolen Kisses, by Cerise DeLand He kissed her once. Ruined her, too! 10 years later, he’s does it again. Lance & Emma have their second chance but it nearly goes pear shaped. Captivating story
Charred Hope, by Caroline Warfield A fool threw her and her miniature away. A wiser man treasures them both. Another gem & the most emotional novella in the set
Love by Moonlight, by Elizabeth Ellen Carter By daylight, he's a gentleman. By moonlight, justice is served. Robert Somerville & Rachel Pendleton’s story & it was so good
Forever and Always, by Rue Allyn Lord Fontus shares a secret with Lady Dee. Revealing the secret could be fatal. Or it could lead them to forever and always. Another brilliant novella that adds a twist, loved it
A Bend in the Road, by Jude Knight Justin Weatherall & Lady Felicity Belvoir bring the set to a close & what a lovely way to finish
The Belles & friends have done it again. Ten absolutely delightful novellas centred around the Normanton Hall house party, there’s also a highwayman & each novella begins with an extract from Principal Officer Robert Pierce’s casebook I voluntarily read and reviewed a special copy of this book; all thoughts and opinions are my own

One Good Wager Leads to Another by Barbara Monajem
Thisbe Rose moves into the haunted cottage she inherited. She’s not afraid of ghosts, smugglers, and highwaymen—but she’s not so sure about the oddest housekeeper she’s ever seen. Gervaise Transom wagers a friend he can spend months disguised as a housekeeper without being caught. When Thisbe moves into the haunted cottage, he should leave, to protect her reputation—but he also must stay, to keep her safe.
My Review
"One Good Wager Leads to Another" by Barbara Monajem is a delightful romp filled with whimsical charm and intrigue. The story follows Thisbe Rose, a brave and spirited woman who moves into a cottage with a mysterious past, not quite prepared for the quirky challenges that come her way. With supernatural elements and the threat of dubious characters lurking about, Thisbe's fears are mostly focused on the peculiar housekeeper who seems to have more secrets than the cottage itself.
Gervaise Transom, the housekeeper, adds a unique twist with his bold wager to remain undetected in disguise for months. His true intentions, however, shift when he finds himself drawn to Thisbe, leading to an engaging push and pull between duty, safety, and burgeoning romance.
The author weaves humor and heart into the story, balancing high stakes with lighthearted moments. The chemistry between Thisbe and Gervaise is slow to start, and their dialogue sparkles with wit. We find themselves immersed in a world where love and adventure intertwine, all cloaked in an air of mystery.
Overall, "One Good Wager Leads to Another" is a fun and enchanting read that invites you to embrace the unexpected, whether it be in haunting cottages or matters of the heart. Perfect for fans of cozy mysteries and romantic escapades!

My Gift to You by Mary Lancaster
The young Marchioness of Corey comes from a family of expensive rakehells. The world knows she married the marquis for his money—a conclusion Corey reached the day after their wedding. Only, it was never true…
Attending the Normanton House party, each hopes for happiness. Only her wretched family gets in the way again, as does the local highwayman, and it seems their secret love is perpetually doomed…
My Review
In "My Gift to You," Mary Lancaster weaves a captivating tale of love, family expectations, and societal judgments.
The young Marchioness of Corey, trapped in a life of scandal and rumors, becomes the center of a story that is both heartwarming and fraught with tension. The premise revolves around the widely held belief that her marriage to the Marquis is a mere transaction driven by wealth, a notion that the Marquis (Leopold) himself seems to accept.
As the duo attends the lavish Normanton House party, the story deepens. The author explores their relationship, revealing layers of emotion and desire that challenge initial perceptions. The tension escalates with the introduction of a local highwayman and the relentless interference of the Marchioness’s dysfunctional family, adding both intrigue and conflict.
The author’s writing is both engaging and tender, drawing us into the struggles faced by the characters. The blend of romance and societal critique keeps the story flowing, while the pacing builds anticipation for a happy ending.
Overall, "My Gift to You" is a delightful read that examines the true nature of love in a world quick to judge. The characters are relatable, and their journey is both poignant and entertaining, promising a satisfying escape into a historical romance filled with unexpected twists.

A Duke in Peril by Meara Platt

Captain James Ryder claims to be the Duke of Wellbourne’s emissary and carries a letter concerning a Foreign Office matter. Is he more than he appears, and perhaps the duke himself? Stolen Kisses by Cerise DeLand
When Lance Winters kissed Emma Tomkins pretending to be a highwayman years ago, she was ruined. Now she has a fortune—and vows to remain a spinster. But Lance, newly retired from the army, wants Emma to laugh again…and love again. So he’ll dress up like a highwayman again. But can he kiss some sense into her?
My Review
"Stolen Kisses" by Cerise DeLand is a delightful Regency romance that blends humor, second chances, and a touch of mischief.
The story revolves around Lance Winters, who years ago ruined Emma Tomkins with an ill fated kiss while masquerading as a highwayman. Now, with a fortune in her pocket and a firm resolution to remain a spinster, Emma seems determined to shut herself off from love.
The author’s characters are wonderfully written, Emma is a great heroine, grappling with her past and the emotional scars left by that fateful kiss, while Lance is a charming and determined hero who is ready to fight for Emma's heart. His plan to dress up as a highwayman once again adds an element to the plot, blending nostalgia with fresh romance.

Charred Hope by Carolyn Warfield
Major Titus Brannock believes the charred painting that fell into his hands must be valuable to its owner. When he finds her, he finds a true treasure. Tessa Fleming’s first instinct was to burn the miniature her late husband scorned, but the admiration she sees in Titus’s eyes gives her different ideas. Perhaps the little gem will give them both a pearl beyond price.
My Review
"Charred Hope" by Carolyn Warfield is a Regency romance that balances art, healing, and the discovery of a newfound love.
The story introduces Major Titus Brannock, who stumbles upon a charred painting that he believes holds hidden value. His journey to return the painting to its rightful owner leads him to Tessa Fleming, a widow grappling with her own grief and insecurities.
Themes of loss and redemption take a center stage, as Tessa contemplates destroying the miniature her late husband scorned, only to find hope and admiration in Titus's eyes. (Maybe it’s not as bad as her husband made out?) and their blossoming romance is rooted in mutual respect and a shared journey toward acceptance and healing.
The writing is rich and vivid, painting a picture of the Regency era's society whilst watching the characters’ emotional struggles. The pacing is well balanced, allowing for moments of reflection and tender romance, creating an engaging novella that kept me interested in their journey.
Overall, "Charred Hope" is a delightful blend of emotional depth and romantic charm, making it a heartwarming read for fans of historical romance.

A Bend in the Road by Jude Knight
Justin is not worthy of Lady Felicity Belvoir. He hadn't needed her brother to point it out. Felicity is determined to marry Justin Weatherall, her brother be damned. Now that she has found where he is living, she needs only to convince him.
My Review
"A Bend in the Road" by Jude Knight is a delightful historical romance that captures the essence of determination and love against societies expectations.

I liked how we got to meet the gentleman conducting the search for the highwayman after each short story. I almost wanted a novella on his search 😂
This collection is filled with delightful stories, written by different authors, all tied together by using The Casebook of Principal Officer Robert Pierce. Bow Street Runner Robert Pierce has been sent to find Larcenous Lucy and capture the elusive Captain Midnight. Each story has ties to the Somerville’s house party, and it is important to remember that many of them are taking place simultaneously, as the authors did a good job coordinating their tales. These exciting stories are filled with a variety of characters, danger, surprises, and steamy kisses. You will find love at first sight and lots of second chances, as well as a few wrongs righted, as you read this amazing collection of stories. Enjoy!
One Good Wager Leads to Another - Barbara Monajem Thisbe Wrapton Rose and Gervaise Transom After being thoroughly kissed by Mr. Transom on the terrace at a ball, seventeen year old Thisbe Wrapton was caught by her maid telling her household’s ghost (whom only she could see) that she thought she was with child. The maid summoned her Aunt Andrea, and her father insisted that Thisbe marry her second cousin Eddie Rose. Eddie went off to war very soon after the wedding and did not return. However, Captain Rose did leave Lucky Cottage to his wife, which Thisbe could claim once she turned twenty-one. Now four years after they married, Thisbe was finally out of her demanding father’s house and on her own. There were two servants at the cottage, Mrs. Wix the housekeeper and Sergeant Dolman, the man-of-all-works. The story that follows includes a wager, a master of disguise, smugglers, revenue agents, a former spy, an irate father, a scarred servant, a highwayman, a Justice of the Peace, deception, protection and the ghost of a husband. This is a second chance story that feels heavy and dark, but is really a bright spot in the lives of its two main characters. Thisbe’s ghost seeing ability adds a bit of uniqueness and comic relief. Most enjoyable!
My Gift to You - Mary Lancaster Gabriella (Gaby) Raymond (19) and Leopold, Marquis of Corey This story is a reminder that the key to any good relationship is communication. Four months ago, Leo, the Marquis of Corey, married Gabriella Raymond. Her family had a poor reputation and her father, the Earl of Blockton, was known as the Old Devil due to his attutide and disreputable behavior. After a beautiful and steamy wedding night, the Marquis became cold and aloof. She believed that he was disappointed with her and he thought that she was secretly in love with someone else. Shortly before they were set to travel to Lord and Lady Somerville’s house party, Leo gifted the family rubies to Gabriella. She was thrilled and planned to wear them at the party, except that her maid had not packed them. Fearful that her brother Nicholas, who had been seen entering her home as they were driving away, had stolen them, she sent word to her other brother Art to retrieve them. Meanwhile, Leo and Gabriella seemed to get closer one minute, and have a set back the next. It didn’t help that Leo’s former mistress was at the party and it appeared that she wanted him back. One miscommunication and assumption after another led to so much disappointment and heartache. The appearance of a highwayman was the final act that put everything in perspective. The author did a good job drawing me into the story, as I often found myself closing my eyes and shaking my head at Leo’s and Gabriella’s inner dialogue. I am so glad that they finally aired things out and let love prevail.
Falling Into You - Sherry Ewing Josephine Cranfield (26) and Milton Sutton, Earl of Langley Josephine was being courted by her brother’s best friend, Milton Sutton, the Earl of Langley. Just when she thought he was going to propose to her, he informed her that he since his father was very ill, he would be leaving England for business purposes and may not be back for a year or so. He didn’t know what the future would hold and would neither make her an offer, nor ask her to wait for him. She was heartbroken. When he returned a year later, he discovered that Josephine was on the verge of a betrothal to Philip, Viscount Upton. And so Milton began his campaign to win Josephine’s forgiveness and reclaim her heart. This story is a delightful second chance tale including emotional outbursts and an encounter with a highwayman. But in the end, the heart wants what the heart wants, and in this case both hearts won.
Sir Wescott Steals a Heart - Alina K. Field Sybil Dunsford (24) and Sir Wescott Twisden (23) Mr. Picard went down with the ship lesving his wife with a nine year old son Langston, and infant twins Castell and Pollux. She died a year after marrying Richard Dunsford who had a daughter Sybil. Dunsford sent Langston to school and put twelve year old Sybil in charge of the young twins while he ran the farm. When he died, he left Devil’s Dyke Grange to Sybil. Now Langston works for the revenue force instead of the smugglers, and the twins help out on the farm. Sir Wescott Twisden was visiting his friend Captain Reggie Dalrymple, who happened to be one of Sybil’s neighbors. After a chance meeting on the road spiked his interest, Wes had Reggie introduce him to Sybil at an assembly. One dance later and he was smitten. Sybil was wary, but thrilled that Wes was so much taller than her, which was often not the case. What follows is the tale of Wes and Sybil’s “courtship”. You will find a woman impersonating a man, smuggled goods, a couple held prisoner, a tavern brawl, a man swindling his neighbors while having designs on Sybil, two mischievous young men, an uncle with digestive issues, a pregnant stepmother and a few steamy kisses. This story has action, danger, humor, a wide range in its few characters, and a touch of steam. There is just something very charming about Wes…..even though he didn’t get to meet Captain Moonlight or see a ghost.
Love by Moonlight - Elizabeth Ellen Carter Rachel Pendleton and Captain Robin Somerville Captain Robin Somerville has been living with his brother, Sir Peter Somerville and his family for the past year since the war ended and he was no longer needed for the Royal Navy. Although his best friend, Lieutenant Justin Weatherall, was nearby having taken a job as the local school master, Robin missed the routine, action and thrills provided by his naval career. Soon, he and Justin found a way to right some wrongs and get the adrenaline rush he craved. Rachel Pendleton was the local vicar’s only daughter and the undeclared object of Robin’s affection. When one of his adventures required the church’s bell tower key, Rachel received a kiss in exchange for procuring it. Later her assistance was required to keep a young lady safe, leading to a life threatening moment, a declaration of love and a new life for both of them. This is a thrilling story wherein secrets are kept, villains are thwarted and humiliated, and hearts are jouned. Most enjoyable!
Forever & Always (The Secrets of Fontus Leigh) - Rue Allyn Lady Deoiridh (Dee) Aitken and Lord Fontus Leigh Lady Deoiridh (Dee) Aitken and her mother spent time in the French court. One man who often visited the court, Monsieur Aristide Barbeau, was relentless in his pursuit of her and her dowry. Desperate, she enlisted the help of Lord Fontus Leigh, brother of the Duke of Leigh, whom she met in a tavern. She asked him to marry her, in name only, and with the help of the French resistance, they boarded a ship to Brighton, where they kissed goodbye and went their separate ways. She had promised to file for an annulment once she was sure she was safe from Barbeau. Lord and Lady Somerville had arranged a cottage for her and all was well until Lady Somerville sent a letter inviting Lady Aitken to come to England and visit her daughter. Now Dee was afraid that Barbeau knew where she was, and hoped that staying married would protect her. Meanwhile, Lord Fontus was summoned home by his brother Lovis, the Duke of Leigh. Previously, Fontus had fought a duel with the Earl of Sandrow’s son. Although Fontus aimed to miss, Vincent stepped into the path of the bullet and died. Fontus was forced to leave England, due to threats from the Earl of Sandrow, but he recently returned at the Duke’s insistence. Apparently to smooth relationships between families, the Duke had made an arrangement with the Earl for Fontus to marry his daughter Beatrix. Clearly Lovis did not know about his brother’s secret marriage, which put Fontus in an awkward position, especially as the Earl and his daughter were attending the same house party as Dee, her mother and him. When trouble hit, Beatrix proved to be an ally and Barbeau learned a lesson about messing with strong women. Unfortunately, this tale sees the arrest of Captain Moonlight, but even that has a happy ending. Loved it!
A Bend in the Road - Jude Knight Lady Felicity Belvoir (23) and Lieutenant Justin Weatherall Lady Felicity often traveled with her brother, the Earl of Hythe, on his diplomatic missions for the Crown. It was on one such mission that she met Lieutenant Justin Weatherall. They fell in love, but then one day he disappeared without a word. The Earl had informed Justin that Felicity was too good for him and suggested that he leave. Fast forward a couple of years and Felicity has discovered that Justin is a school teacher near Normanton House, the country seat of Lord and Lady Somerville, who just happen to be hosting a house party to which she has garnered an invitation. Meanwhile, Justin has been fighting off the advances of fifteen year old Milly Stone who was determined to marry him and did not appreciate what she considered to be Felicity’s interference. Although Felicity and Justin reunite, complications and the Earl’s words stand between them. Captain Victor Grant is also a house party guest and has declared his intentions to marry Felicity to Lady Somerville, enlisting her support for his suit. Things get ugly, threats are made, arrests occur, and lies are told. Felicity is one determined woman. Justin is smitten. Robin’s heart and sense of fairness is in the right place, and Milly is spoiled and pretentious. This is one of those delightful stories where villains are thwarted, friendships are strong, class doesn’t matter, and love triumphs.
A Duke in Peril - Meara Platt Lady Florence Swann (22) and Captain James Ryder, Duke of Wellbourne So good! Lady Florence Swann was on her way home from a gown fitting when she saw a huge horse standing by the side of the road. Next to the horse lay an unconscious and badly injured man in uniform. She stopped her coachman, and together with her footman, they managed to get the bleeding man into her carriage. She went through his pockets trying to determine his identity, and found a letter to the Duke of Wellbourne regarding an emissary and a meeting with Lord Meade to take place at the Somerville’s ball. Her grandfather stitched him up and they waited for him to regain consciousness. He introduced himself as Captain James Ryder, declared that Florence was his angel and asked her grandfather’s permission to court her. James tries to gain Florence’s favor while recovering and trying to keep her safe. Things go awry at the ball, but in the end, James walks away with a with a fiance. This is quick, entertaining, has a bit of danger and a touch of romance. It is simply delightful!
Stolen Kisses - Cerise DeLand Emma Tomkins (29) and Lancelot (Lance) Winters (31) Ten years ago, Lance Winters dressed up like a highwayman, stopped the coach in which Emma Tomkins was riding and kissed her. Then he left to go to war. He did not know that Lady Shackleford witnessed the kiss and ruined Emma’s reputation, causing her to be shunned by society. Now, due to an inheritance fom their uncle, Emma and her cousin Diana are wealthy, plan to purchase a home in Brighton and leave London and its ridiculous rules behind. Meanwhile Lance, who recently inherited a title, lands and wealth from his now deceased cousin, has returned with the intention of marrying Emma. Misunderstandings are resolved, a repeat performance has been staged and a proposal accepted. They even accidentally assist in an arrest made by a Bow Street Runner. Lance is such a sweetheart who clearly adores Emma. I love that he will not take ‘no’ for an answer, and that she puts a quick end to her stubborn pride. This is a charming story with a touch of trepidation to keep the reader on their toes.
Charred Hope - Caroline Warfield Tessa Fleming and Major Titus Brannock Major Titus Brannock was residing with his brother, the Earl of Astlough, now that the war was over…and he was feeling restless and unfulfilled. While unpacking his trunks, he discovered a small portrait of Lieutenant Robert Fleming’s wife Tessa that had been discovered after she and her son had been sent back to England following Robert’s death. Titus decided to return it. After a lengthy trip, he found Tessa and her young son on the outskirts of a village close to Normanton House, the Somerville’s estate. After a fear based frosty reception, Titus left the wrapped minature with Tessa and informed her that he would be at the local inn until the next morning should she have any questions. After he returned to the inn, Captain Robin Somerville and Lieutenant Justin Weatherall arrived and they renewed their acquaintance resulting in Robin inviting Titus to attend the ball that was to soon be held by the Somervilles. Curious about the circumstances surrounding the discovery of her minature portrait, Tessa sought out Titus for answers. Titus became very protective of Tessa and her young son Robby, especially after observing Oswald Neale, a house party guest, harrassing her. Things got dicey at the ball leading to declarations of love and the promise of a happy future. Robby is adorable, Titus is a true gentleman, and courageous and kind Tessa finally gets the love and life she deserves. Such an uplifting story!.
I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
I’m giving this one 3 1/2 stars. A few of the stories were excellent, but I found most of them to be not as well written or as engaging as I would like. None of them are bad, just most of them not my cup of tea. I also found discrepancies in the weaving together of the stories; I think the authors could have done a better job getting all their character names and situations in sync. I thought the stories by Barbara Monahem, Alina K. Field, and Caroline Warfield were particularly excellent— they made this anthology worth reading.
This is a compilation of ten stories with a common theme of Captain Moonlight, who is a highwayman, and his capture and the Somerville house party in Normanton. It was an entertaining read with different tropes, characters that crossed over from one story to another, thrills, chills, a few laughs, and ten happy endings. ~~~~
One Good Wager Leads to Another by Barbara Monajem
FIVE STARS
This was a fun story with a touch of angst. Thisbe Rose was at a dance and kissed Gervaise Transom. Through a misunderstanding and naïveté, she is quickly married off to a cousin.
Gervaise is a master of disguises and this was a good one! But just how good is it? He’s also a betting kind of guy, which is how he got into this situation in the first place.
Throw in the fact that Thisbe sees ghosts and her father is a pompous ass and is out a controlling jerk makes this a super good story.
My Gift to You by Mary Lancaster
FOUR STARS
This story was great. It was unique in that Gaby and Leo are already married and have been for just a few months, but their relationship is strained. She comes from a family of thieves and miscreants and brought nothing to the marriage while her husband is a marquis and didn’t care about that.
But there is a matter of trust. When they attend a house party and she discovers that the family jewels he had given her were left behind, she thinks her brother stole them. How was she going to explain that to Leo? He would think she sold them and pocketed the money or gave it to her father or brothers or something. Leo had no reason to trust her.
Much is revealed as they try to get things on track, but it helped that both were making an effort. That created some tension, but some feels too.
It was a wonderful story, but I had to give it four stars because there were no character descriptions. Not a one. When Leo told Gaby that she was beautiful, I wanted to see too. I wanted to see Leo, Arthur, and even Nicholas. Seeing characters helps me connect with them. I missed that.
It was still a good story.
Falling into You by Sherry Ewing
FIVE STARS
This story fired on all cylinders. The first thing I appreciated was fantastic character descriptions. I felt as I was in the same room with them and was eavesdropping on their conversations and actions. Most of them had great descriptions and even as I grew a little frustrated with Josephine, I could see (and feel) what she was going through. YAY!
The prologue set up the story and it would’ve been easier for Josephine to understand why Milton did what he did if he had just come out and told her what the real deal was. But if he had, we wouldn’t have this second-chance-sweep-me-off-my-feet tale that kept me turning the pages.
Milton was gone for a year. He’d been in love with Josephine when he left. When he came back, he was dismayed to discover that she was involved with another man and Milton was going to have to win her back.
There was some angst, some feels, stolen kisses, a bit of humor with George, and a highwayman who was happy to free them of their valuables.
Excellent read!
Sir Westcott Steals a Heart by Alina K Field
FIVE STARS
What wasn’t to love in this one? Sybil is a farm girl, taking care of her brothers, raising black and white pigs, keeping the mortgage paid that is held by bounder and a criminal—she’s a busy girl who doesn’t have time to think about men let alone marrying. She’s also exceedingly tall and finding men who are as tall or taller than she is nigh impossible, not that she’s looking.
Sir Westcott is taken with her when he first encountered her. Later he dances with her at an assembly which intrigued him even more and now he wants to court her. She’s not so sure about that, even if he is taller than she is and makes her feel feminine.
These two are so good together. He is quick-witted and not afraid of some adventure, especially when she is involved. She is sensible and pragmatic while fiercely protective of her brothers and her independence. She wasn’t afraid to kiss him or thwart him and he never gave up, They were the perfect match.
Good read!
A Duke in Peril by Meara Platt
FIVE STARS
This story reminded me of why I love this author so much. I smiled and chuckled more than once, even when things were tense. I love the way she weaves humor into these situations, yet keeps it all on target.
Florence is on her way back home after going to the modiste for a fitting of the gown she's going to wear to the ball when she comes upon a beautiful horse with no rider on the side of the road. Upon further investigation, she discovers a wounded man lying face down in the grass near the horse. It doesn't take her long to ascertain that he'd been shot and needed help. She ends up taking him home to care for him.
James Ryder is a duke, but Florence thinks he's the duke's emissary. He is on a mission and the less any outsiders know of it and him, the better. He lets her think that until all is revealed, which is a long way into the story.
Meanwhile, the flirting and the quips kept the story rolling. It was love at first sight for him. She was reluctant. They didn't know each other. She had a point. But when you know, you know and James' patience and persistence earned this a solid five star rating.
Stolen Kisses by Cerise Deland
FIVE STARS
This story was aptly titled. A highwayman stops a carriage and kisses one of the women to the point where she was ruined then takes off. It was so clever, but as I said, she was ruined and he was called off to service as an engineer and didn't return for ten years.
Emma, the woman he kissed, has been shunned and disregarded by society that whole time. But she's determined to introduce her cousin into society and give her a season, which interprets to she has to go back and face the people who have been talking smack about her and making her life hell all this time. What she wasn't counting on was Lance, the highwayman who had kissed her, making another appearance into her life. This time he's titled and wealthy and still in love with her.
This is a second-chance-at-love trope. Emma and Lance knew each other long before he played the highwayman and stole that first kiss. They're older now, maybe a bit more mature, but Emma is still stinging from what had happened ten years before and Lance has some making up to do.
This was a witty and fun read, earning it five stars.

Titus Brannock has recently been released from the army and is in possession of a fire-damaged miniature of Tessa Fleming, the widow of a fallen soldier. Without a lot of direction in his life at the moment, he decides to return it to her.
Tessa is surprised to get it back, but isn’t all that courteous with Major Brannock. She keeps all men at a distance and for good reason. My heart went out to her.
Titus is a cinnamon roll hero. I loved everything about him. He was honorable, patient, chivalrous, and even shocked me a bit at one point, but he was a great guy and did everything for the better.
I chastised Tessa for not scooping him up when she had the chance, but all’s well that ends well.
This story was fantastic, but I was dying for more character descriptions. I don’t need them on every page, but periodic reminders help keep me involved with the story.
Still a five star read!
Love by Moonlight by Elizabeth Ellen Carter
FIVE STARS
How I loved this story! It was packed full of adventure, intrigue, and an unlikely love match. I could have finished it in one sitting, but life got in the way.
Captain Moonlight is at it again. He’s closing in on some bad dudes, but he’s got a bit of a problem. The leader of the smuggling ring has threatened a tavern owner’s daughter and she has to be moved.
Rachel is the daughter of the town’s vicar and is in love with Robin Somerville. He’s the second son of some noble (his brother now holds the title) and he is a former captain of the royal navy. He is way above her station. There’s no way to have a future with him. But that doesn’t stop her from vying for time with him in any way she can.
Robin isn’t so impervious to her. He’s in love with her too, but he’s restless and bored when he’s not at sea. He’s busy despite that and Rachel is on his short list.
This is a super good read by an author who is new to me. She mentioned that this may be the last thing she writes for a while. I hope all is well with her. I might have to pick up some of her previous work.
I was impressed by this one.
Forever & Always The Secrets of Fontus Leigh by Rue Allyn
FOUR STARS
I did enjoy this story, but honestly I didn’t see how it fit into the theme of the anthology until the very end. I was thinking that it was superfluous no matter how much I liked it until I hit the end.
Fontus Leigh is secretly married to Dee, which is short for a name I cannot pronounce no matter how many times I listened to it said on some video I found when I googled it. I don’t usually mind exotic names. I like the challenge of learning how to say them, but this one irritated me. Every time I saw it, I clenched my teeth.
Despite that I liked her. She is married to Fontus and had three years to get the marriage annulled, but had done nothing to make that happen. When he shows up at the Somerville house party and has to pursue another woman who his brother and her father have seen fit to marry, what’s a girl to do?
As I said, this story is good. It was fast-paced and even fun at times, but what made me drop a star was the lack of character descriptions and Dee's given name. It was too cumbersome and interrupted the reading experience for me. I guess if that makes me look stupid, it isn’t the first time nor will it be the last.
A Bend in the Road by Jude Knight
FIVE STARS
I wasn't sure we would get Felicity's and Justin's story, but here it is as big as day and every bit as bright. In previous stories, it was mentioned that Justin was in love with Felicity, but there was no hope. She was the daughter/sister of an earl and he was a former lieutenant in the navy and now a schoolmaster. He has no title and no wealth and she has both.
But when she shows up at the Somerville house party and Justin is injured, there's no reason for her not to go check on him. Right? They are friends, after all. But she's got a history with Justin and she is not happy with him at the moment.
This was a clever ending to the saga. I thought Captain Moonlight was put to rest already, but it isn't over until it's over. There was a lot of adventure in this story, a wee bit of romance, but it's mostly about reconciliation, friendship, and ultimately love conquers all.
I do wish there had been more character descriptions, though. All I know is that Felicity has blonde hair and blue eyes. I got no picture of Justin or any of the other characters. Bummer.
What an enjoyable collection of new stories! They are all linked to Sir Peter Somerville’s House Party and Ball at Normanton Hall in some way or another. A mysterious “Captain Moonlight” highwayman seems to be making the road to the house party (and finding their true love) perilous indeed for those en route to it! In my opinion, almost all the stories are 5 star, and are of sweet romances that have a happy ending—at least for our 10 couples! There is an overlap of characters and events that occurs throughout this collection, making all the stories fit together nicely. This wonderful group of writers has delivered another outstanding collection of stories put together in a most enjoyable way, which you will not want to miss!
Brief synopsis of the stories: 1> One Good Wager Deserves Another, by Barbara Monajem Delightful tale replete with good ghosts, an independently-minded young lady setting up a household away from a domineering father, and a second chance at happiness love story.
2> “My Gift to You” - by Mary Lancaster A sweet & clean little tale about how NOT to start a marriage, by “assuming his /her displeasure and countering it with defiance and mockery”. Doing so wasted months, when they could have been building a strong basis for a long, happy marriage.
3> “Falling Into You”, by Sherry Ewing Milton Sutton, Earl of Langley - set aside the plan to marry to save father from bankruptcy. However, he did NOT explain why to his fiancé, Lady Josephine Cranfield. She was hurt and determined to not let him back in her heart, when one year later Milton reappeared. This tale is a lesson in what not to do, AND what to do: DON’T break off a courtship without explanation. DO make amends ASAP for any misunderstandings and smooth ruffled feathers. A sweet story with a HEA for our H & h.
> 4 “ Sir Westcott Steals a Heart”, by Alina K. Field Sweet story with a lady, Sybil Dunsford, raising her brothers on the farm she inherited after their parents die. The tie in to the series? The boys, and then Sybil herself, are pulled into the smuggling business to support themselves—-the smuggling that is part of the ethos surrounding the whole, group of stories! Of course Sybil is unable to conceal her identity and falls afoul of the smugglers. Sir Westcott comes to the rescue and her life plans change dramatically for the better!
5 > “A Duke in Peril”, by Meara Platt Swann Hall Sussex, England October 1817 Lady Florence Swann finds a handsome soldier wounded on the side of the road near Swann Hall, the country estate where she and her grandfather reside. Captain James Ryder (who was on the way to Sir Peter Somerville’s House Party and ball) claims to be the Duke of Wellbourne’s emissary and carries a letter concerning a Foreign Office matter. Is he more than he appears? Can Florence trust her heart to him? In this story, we have the characters actually get to the ball, where unexpected and exciting events turn lives upside down!
6 > “Stolen Kisses”, by Cerise DeLand A light-hearted second chance love story When Lance Winters (now , Weatherby-Soames of Pickford and Fife) kisses Emma Tomkins (in the presence of witness) pretending to be a highwayman 10 years ago, she was ruined. Now, highway men who really are robbing people, are in the area, terrorizing the populace. Not realizing this, Lance tries his trick again of holding up Emma’s carriage, demanding another kiss! This action nearly gets him arrested as being one of the real highwaymen on this perilous road! An interesting tidbit: they attend Sir Peter Somerville’s party, where they run into a couple from another story in this collection! It is this overlapping of characters and events that occurs that makes all the stories taken together, that form a book of vignettes of the lives of those attending.
7 > “Charred Hope”, by Caroline Warfield Major Titus Brannock has a painting that was found after Mrs.Tessa Fleming’s husband was killed in action. Three years later, when putting his things away, he came across it and set out to find the widow in order to return it to her. Mrs. Fleming is the war widow with a son who is living in near destitution. She is the beneficiary of first the Moonlight rider’s fleecing of those who fleeced others, then Major Brannock’s good will. This touching story provides Mrs. Fleming and her son with a HEA, when disaster loomed right ahead for them.
8 > “Love by Moonlight”, by Elizabeth Ellen Carter By daylight, he's a gentleman. By moonlight, justice is served. In this exciting novella, we have Captain Robin Somerville, home from the war, trying to find the path to the rest of his life. He is brother to Sir Peter Somerville, and the story takes place in the environs of Sir Peter’s home. Robin finds his role as “Captain Moonlight”, who takes rendering justice into his own hands when others seem unable to do so. Along the way, he finds his HEA with the curate’s daughter, Rachel Pendleton, and brings the worst criminal to heel. You will not want to miss this story!
9 > “Forever & Always: The Secrets of Fontus Leigh”, by Rue Allyn It’s Sir Peter Somerville’s House party and Lady Deoiridh (Dee) Aitken and Fontus Leigh’s story to their HEA. In France, Fontus had helped Dee escape a fortune hunter, Barbeau by marrying her, and having his brother escort Dee back to England. Now, Barbeau had found her again by following Dee’s mother. What follows is a tricky cat and mouse game! The perfect solution to retiring “Captain Midnight’ presents itself, by setting up Barbeau (the fortune hunter) to take the fall as being that highway man! An exciting addition to this collection of stories!
10 > “A Bend in the Road” - by Jude Knight We meet again Lady Felicity Belvoir and Justin Weatherall (the schoolteacher) whom we met in an earlier story in this book. They both are invited to the House Party at Normanton Hall. One of the complications that must be untangled in their love story, is a Captain Grant, a suitor for Lady Felicity’s hand. Captain Grant proposed to Felicity in Paris in 1815, again in 1816, in London in 1817, and has followed her to Somerville’s House Party, seemingly at the instigation of Felicity’s brother who thinks the match a good idea. Unfortunately for him, Felicity and Justin disaggree with her brother, the Earl of Hythe. The drama that then ensues leaves Felicity and Justin engaged, Captain Grant in custody, and the end of the ride of “Captain Moonlight”, who has now found his own happily-ever-after. A wonderful concluding story that ties up all the loose ends for us!.
I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
This collection of novellas centers around a road between the Somerville estate and Brighton, where a Robin Hood-like highwayman is distributing just deserts, and the town of Normaton. Some characters appear or are mentioned in more than their own stories. I did like that these stories are set in the countryside with many characters being villagers. It got off to a very good start with Barbara Monajem's One Good Wager Leads to Another, which includes a helpful ghost. I found this delightful, a bit on the light-hearted side. As usual, belles Alina K. Field, Caroline Warfield, Cerise Deland, Elizabeth Ellen Carter and Jude Knight deliver solid storytelling. One story was a DNF and two I skimmed as the writing style/action was not to my taste. (Fussing about bleeding wounds and THEN check if the unconscious person is alive!) This is not reflected in my rating. I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
This ten-author Regency anthology is a delightful tapestry of romance, mystery, and mischief, all centered around Sir Peter Somerville’s house party at Normanton Hall. With Captain Moonlight stirring up trouble on the roads and smuggling threads weaving through the tales, each story offers a unique flavor while contributing to a cohesive, satisfying whole. The romances are sweet, the endings are happy, and the transitions between stories are impressively seamless. It’s a literary soirée worth attending.
Story Summaries: 1. One Good Wager Deserves Another by Barbara Monajem A spirited heroine, a haunted house, and a wager that leads to unexpected love, this story blends whimsy and warmth with a touch of the supernatural. As the heroine escapes her overbearing father to forge her own path, she finds not only independence but a second chance at romance. Ghosts and good intentions make this a charming kickoff to the collection.
2. My Gift to You by Mary Lancaster - Marriage gets a second wind in this tender tale of miscommunication and rediscovery. A couple learns the hard way that pride and assumptions can sabotage love, but also that vulnerability and honesty can rebuild it. Lancaster’s elegant prose and emotional insight make this a quietly powerful entry, reminding us that love often needs a reset, not a rewrite.
3. Falling Into You by Sherry Ewing - When duty forces Milton Sutton to abandon his engagement without explanation, Lady Josephine is left heartbroken and furious. A year later, his return sparks a storm of unresolved feelings. Ewing crafts a poignant reunion filled with longing, regret, and the sweet ache of forgiveness. It’s a gentle reminder that love, when nurtured, can bloom again. Very enjoyable story.
4. Sir Westcott Steals a Heart by Alina K. Field - Sybil Dunsford is a fierce, capable woman raising her brothers and dodging smugglers on her inherited farm. Enter Sir Westcott, whose timely arrival upends her plans and her heart. Field’s tale is rich with grit and grace, balancing rural hardship with romantic rescue. The smuggling subplot ties beautifully into the anthology’s overarching intrigue.
5. A Duke in Peril by Meara Platt - Florence’s roadside rescue of a wounded stranger leads to flirtation, mistaken identity, and a slow-burn romance that sparkles with humor. Platt’s signature wit shines as Duke James Ryder hides his true mission while falling head over heels. Their banter and chemistry make this story a standout, equal parts suspenseful and swoony. Entertaining and humorous read!
6. Stolen Kisses by Cerise DeLand - Ten years after a scandalous kiss, Lance Winters tries to recreate the moment, only to nearly get arrested for impersonating a highwayman. Emma Tomkins isn’t amused, but fate (and a house party) gives them a second chance. DeLand’s playful tone and clever callbacks to other stories in the anthology make this a lively, interconnected gem.
7. Charred Hope by Caroline Warfield - Major Titus Brannock’s quest to return a lost painting leads him to a war widow and her son, struggling to survive. Warfield delivers a deeply emotional story of healing and hope, where kindness becomes the catalyst for love. It’s a quiet triumph that lingers long after the final page.
8. Love by Moonlight by Elizabeth Ellen Carter - Captain Robin Somerville, moonlighting as a vigilante, finds purpose, and romance, upon returning from war. His bond with Rachel Pendleton, the curate’s daughter, is forged in justice and mutual respect. Carter’s tale pulses with action and heart, offering a satisfying arc for both the hero and the mysterious Captain Moonlight.
9. Forever & Always: The Secrets of Fontus Leigh by Rue Allyn - Lady Dee Aitken and Fontus Leigh reunite under threat from a persistent fortune hunter. Their clever scheme to unmask the villain as Captain Moonlight adds a delicious twist to the anthology’s central mystery. Allyn’s story is a thrilling blend of espionage, romance, and redemption, with a satisfying payoff.
10. A Bend in the Road by Jude Knight - Lady Felicity Belvoir and Justin Weatherall return for a final chapter that wraps up lingering threads with flair. A persistent suitor, meddling family, and the last ride of Captain Moonlight converge in a tale of courage and commitment. Knight’s conclusion is both romantic and cathartic - a perfect farewell to Normanton Hall.
I voluntarily read and reviewed an Advanced Reader's Copy of this book; all thoughts and opinions are my own.
Ten stories tied together by a house party, a highwayman, smugglers and associated villains, and second chances.
One Good Wager Leads to Another by Barbara Monajem When Thisbe finally escapes her father and moves to cottage left to her by her husband, she fins she has a most unusual housekeeper. Mrs. Wix is actually Gervaise who is disguised as a housekeeper for a wager with a friend. Memories of a long-ago kiss and a nudge from a ghost might give them a second chance.
My Gift to You by Mary Lancaster The Marquis and Marchioness of Corey seem to have a marriage based solely on finances. Even Leo believes Gaby only married him for his money. Will the atmosphere of a festive house party lead to a second chance for true love? Maybe, but talking to each other and sharing secrets may do a lot more.
Falling Into You by Sherry Ewing On the night Josephine expects him to propose, Milton instead informs her that her must leave to take care of some family investments overseas and will be gone for a year. He’s back, and still in love with Josephine, but she has put him behind her (or at least tried). What must he do to win her back? Honesty might work.
Sir Westcott Steals a Heart by Alina K. Field Sybil doesn’t have time for men or romance. She is a country girl who is intent on taking care of the farm and keeping her brothers out of trouble (moving contraband is tricky). Sir Westcott didn’t know he wanted to marry, but tall, brilliant, brave, and beautiful is too much to ignore. The pigs are cute, too.
A Duke in Peril by Meara Platt On her way home from the modiste, Lady Florence Swann finds a wounded soldier lying in the road. She takes Captain James Ryder home to care for him. Although he tells her he is an emissary for the Duke of Wellbourne who needs to get a message to a contact at the Somerville ball. She discovers that James is the Duke of Wellbourne and teams up with him to capture a villain.
Stolen Kisses by Cerise DeLand Ten years ago, Lance, dressed as a highwayman, kissed Emma and caused her ruin. Lance has returned and is now titled and wealthy. Emma bore the disdain of the Ton and is now wealthy and determined to remain a spinster. Lance is still in love with Emma and is determined to win her back. Will dressing as a highwayman again do the trick? It might, but he better keep his eye out for Officer Robert Pierce.
Charred Hope by Caroline Warfield Tessa Fleming is the widow of a soldier who care very little for her. Titus Brannock has returned from the war. Before he left the continent, he was given a charred miniature of Tessa found in the house where she had lived and decides to bring it to her. When they meet, he learns how hard her life has been before and after her time with her husband. He falls for her, and her sweet boy, and shows her what it is like to be a treasure.
Love by Moonlight by Elizabeth Ellen Carter Robin Somerville is the younger brother of Sir Peter Somerville, a former soldier, and part of a secret. He and Rachel, the vicar’s daughter are friends, and maybe more. When Captain Moonlight needs assistance with keeping a young girl safe, Robin turns to Rachel. Their story is one of some danger and intrigue, trust, and romance.
Forever and Always by Rue Allyn Lady Dee escaped the horror of the war in France and a vile potential suitor. Lord Fontus helped in her escape. Fontus is the brother of the Duke of Leigh who has ordered him to propose to an earl’s daughter. The problem with the order is that he is already married, in secret, to Lady Dee, unless she has gotten the annulment. Along with this little problem comes a man who has learned Dee’s location and means to have her. This one may take a while to sort out, but Fontus and Dee are willing to fight for their Forever and Always.
A Bend in the Road by Jude Knight Justin Weatherall has known and loved Lady Felicity Belvoir for several years. He left his position in Brussels with the diplomatic corps to put distance between him and the woman he loved, because he felt he wasn’t good enough for her. She is going to take the opportunity of the house party to prove him wrong. A little bit of intrigue, a villain’s comeuppance, and romance. A happy ending for Justin and Felicity and a perfect finish for an entertaining and enjoyable collection.
I received an ARC of this book via BookSprout and voluntarily reviewed it,
One Good Wager Leads to Another by Barbara Monajem Thisbe is a very sheltered young lady, to the point it gets her into big trouble. Gervaise is a spy, who kisses a young Thisbe and then leaves, not realizing the problems he caused. I adored how Thisbe could talk to ghosts and some of their antics are so funny. I enjoyed how Gervaise was “hiding” in plain sight and the climax was grand!
My Gift to you by Mary Lancaster Pride and jealousy are dangerous beasts that almost cost Gaby and Leo their HEA. Their communication was nil, until danger hits. I loved how the author weaved this quick tale, showing heartache and love so effortlessly in such a short time. But one does wonder how the missing piece got returned though?
Falling into You by Sherry Ewing What good is pride if you lose the most precious gift of love. Josie and Milton each have to answer that question. I could understand her hurt, but to marry someone you don’t love is a travesty. I adored her cousin speaking frankly with her and cheered them both on when dealing with Josie’s mother. Great story.
Sir Westcott steals a Heart by A. Field Sylvia has a problem, and that does not include 3 brothers who cause havoc. Wes is a man looking for ghosts and highwaymen-or at least to have a good time. When he meets Sylvia, he is entranced. I loved how Sylvia was such a strong character, giving as good as she got and how Wes woos her into his life. Cute story.
A Duke in Peril by Meara Platt Florence is a rather cynical young lady, done with the Marriage Mart. James is a soldier on a mission- his last. I adored how she was such a strong heroine and was so protective of her own heart. James falls first and it was adorable how he wooed her. I truly love this author’s stories and this one does not disappoint.
Stolen Kisses by Cerise Deland Dealing with pain from a scandal, Emma is now allowing herself to get back into society, if only for her sweet cousin. Seeing the man who caused the scandal for the first time in 10 years, bring all kinds of emotions. Lance never forgot Emma, and wants her back. The things he goes through to get her to respond is witty, charming and cute. I loved how they finally talked things through. Pride, once again, is the ugly beast that rears it’s head, but love reigns supreme!
Charred Hope by Caroline Warfield Tessa is a war widow with a young’in to raise. Titus is a soldier without a purpose. I adored how protective he was of her from the beginning. We finally get some idea who Captain Moonlight is and what he is trying to accomplish. I have to say, this house party of Sir Peter’s is shaping up to be the chaos party of the year! Great story.
Love by Moonlight by E.E. Carter So Captain Moonlight strikes again with the hardest situation to date. The story is a bit hair raising, with love mixed in. I adored how Robin did his best to care for Rachel, even though she thought they could not match due to her status. How the authors intertwined their stories made this one of my favorite Anthologies. Exciting and lovely story.
Forever and Always by Rue Allyn A different little story within this book of Lady Dee, who is hiding from a dangerous man. Fontus is doing his part to see her safe for reasons no one expects. It is a thrill ride, with twists and turns, one that is especially unexpected and rather funny. Well written with wonderful characters.
A Bend in the Road by Jude Knight This story ties all the plots together to end the book. I adored Felicity’s strength and unwillingness to be a “maiden in distress”. Justin is in it up to his neck and finally realized there was no use fighting what he wants so badly. The villain got his due in good fashion . I did get a little frustrated with Lady Penelope trying to steer Felicity into someone else’s arms when Felicity kept telling her to stop.
The Casebook of Principal Officer Robert Pierce was rather hilarious throughout the book, but like Dudley Doright, he got his man(men) ….or did he?
I enjoyed how each book interacted with the others. That made reading this so much fun!.

Delightful Historical Romance Boxed Set One Wager Leads to Another by Barbara Monajem is a charming tale of unforgotten kisses, hidden identities, and second chances. Gervaise and Thisbe met years ago, sharing a single memorable kiss before he left for the Continent. Now he’s a spy home from the war, and she’s a young widow living in a supposedly haunted cottage. When he wagers he can disguise himself as a woman without being discovered, her “housekeeper” suddenly appears. Will Thisbe see through the ruse? And might two people who never forgot their first kiss finally get another chance? This delightful morsel made me want to explore more of this author’s work. My Gift to You by Mary Lancaster brings lost rubies, misunderstandings, and marital second chances. Leo and Gabriella already love each other, but something Leo witnessed set them painfully off course. A house party finally forces them into the same rooms—and the same conversations. Can they dispel old misunderstandings and rediscover the bond they never truly lost? An entertaining short about the power of simply talking. Falling into You by Sherry Ewing centers on missteps, regrets, and a hopeful reunion. Milton left Josephine without explanation and stayed away for a full year. Now he’s back—too late, or just in time? Winning her trust again won’t be easy. If you enjoy short, heartfelt second-chance romances, this one fits the bill. In Sir Westcott Steals a Heart, Sybil disguises herself as her ill brother to take his place in a smuggling run. Wes follows, a villain lurks in the shadows, and one twist later the two find themselves locked in together. What follows—love or scandal? This adventure has a great blend of danger, disguise, and unexpected affection. A Duke in Peril by Meara Platt offers a lovely mix of suspense and romance. Florence finds an injured soldier by the roadside and nurses him back to health. But who is he really, and who wants him dead? Is he a simple captain—or a duke in hiding? Like Meara Platt’s other work, this bite-sized story is a charming delight. Stolen Kisses by Cerise DeLand is a fun, heartfelt tale of pretend highwaymen, scandalous kisses, and long-lost opportunities. Ten years ago, Lance “stole” a kiss while in disguise, inadvertently ruining Emma’s reputation before leaving for the army. Now he’s home, and Emma—now a contented spinster—must decide whether to let him back into her heart. Can she forgive the unintended hurt? And why was he gone so long? A playful, emotional second-chance romance. Charred Hope by Caroline Warfield tells the story of Tessa, a widow discarded emotionally and materially by her cruel late husband. Hern Titus returns a miniature her husband tossed aside, Tessa isn’t sure what to make of him. But he soon proves himself her champion against a predatory villain who thinks she’s fair game. A touching story of hope, courage, and the possibility of love after hardship. Love by Moonlight by Elizabeth Ellen Carter blends romance with vigilante justice. Robin, back from the war and restless for purpose, begins moonlighting as a highwayman—dangerous work even with noble intentions. When love enters the picture, class differences complicate matters, and his secret life threatens everything he hopes to build. A delightful romantic adventure with a touch of danger. Forever and Always by Rue Allyn features two people thrown together under desperate circumstances. Deoiridh needs help escaping a villain, and though she and Fontus part ways afterward, fate reunites them at a house party. But the villain isn’t far behind. Will she outrun danger again—and is love waiting for them on the other side? A lovely mix of romance and adventure. A Bend in the Road by Jude Knight explores class differences and second chances. Felicity refuses to accept her brother’s declaration that Justin isn’t worthy of her. When she tracks him down, she intends to convince him they belong together. But a villain determined to steal her fortune threatens to unravel everything. I loved this story’s blend of determination, danger, and heartfelt romance.
In One Good Wager Leads to Another, Thisbe thought kisses led to babies and was forced to marry her cousin. She's lucky Eddie was a nice guy but he left for the military soon after and didn't return. Gervais is disgusted as a lady housekeeper when Thisbe shows up at her husband's house. Strange things start happening including with the housekeeper and seeing Eddie's ghost.
In My Gift to You, Gaby and Leopold are newly weds with several misunderstandings in their shakey relationship. It doesn't help that most of her family are greedy users and theives.
Falling into You is a second chance romance between Josephine and her brother's best friend Milton, who dumped her so he concentrate on his ailing father's business interests. He returns a year later hoping to win her forgiveness and her hand before she marries another man. She is understandably angry with Milton but he gets the chance to try to win her back when he is asked to escort her to her suitor's family estate.
In Sir Westcott Steals a Heart, Wes travels to visit a friend and discovers there's plenty of snuggling and a tall lady he is attracted to who is blackmail by a greedy forger and smuggler into participation. When Wes tries to rescue her they both end up locked in a cabin but find a way out and how to get back at her horrible neighbor.
In A Duke in Peril, Florence finds James shot on the side of a road and takes him home to heal him. James worries that his mission has been compromised and pretends to be someone else. James doesn't think it was wrong to have affairs with married women but one of their husbands could have easily been the one who orchested his attack. He falls for Florence who helps him go undercover to get the truth but his lies may keep them apart.
In Stolen Kisses, Lance's kiss ruined Emma years ago but she's content to be an independent spinster until he comes back into her life determined to win her hand this time.
In Charred Hope, Titus travels to a fellow soldier's widow to give her back the miniature portrait she lost while following the drum with her husband. Because Tessa followed her husband so many assume she is a loose woman and try to proposition her including one who doesn't take no for an answer. While protecting Tessa, Titus soon falls for her and her young son.
Love by Moonlight reveals that the highway Captain Moonlight is Captain Robin Somerville. He and his brother's party appear in all the stories. The vicar's daughter Rachel discovers the truth and he asks for help which could be both their downfalls.
In Forever & Always, Dee and Fortus secretly married so she could escape France and a man who was after her. But what is he going to do when when his brother wants him to marry another, Dee is still married to him, and her enemy has come after her determined to do whatever must to gain her fortune?
In A Bend in the Road, Lady Felicity falls for Justin and her brother warns him off. They meet again several years later when his a school master and he still thinks he is not worthy of her while one of her suitors will do whatever it takes to gain her dowry.
These novella romances shared several characters including the Robin Hood like highwayman Captain Moonlight. I liked some stories better than others.
Ten Novellas - A Ghost, A Highwayman and a Houseparty.
Because the stories surround a finite amount of individuals and have been written by different authors, it should be noted that there are some continuity errors but these are less distracting if you do not read the anthology in one sitting.
One Good Wager Leads to Another 4* by Barbara Monajem - a wager leads to unintended consequences but in the end, ‘alls well that ends well’. A lovely little story. My Gift to You 5* by Mary Lancaster - a jealous husband and a lack of communication look set to derail a marriage. At a houseparty both parties decide to be more open with each other but a missing necklace throws a spanner in the works. Delightful. Falling into You 4* by Sherry Ewing - A year after abandoning Josephine Cranfield to travel abroad on business, Milton Sutton, Earl of Langley has returned to England. However, with an engagement in the offing to another man, Josie is not prepared to let Milton break her heart again. Sir Westcott Steals a Heart 5* by Alina K. Field - It is love at first sight for Wes but he has his work cut out in persuading independent Sybil to marry him. Featuring smugglers, excise men, a swindler, town gossips, a naughty pig and three younger high spirited brothers and this story has no dull moments. A Duke in Peril 5* by Meara Platt - Florence saves the life of a soldier attacked and left for dead on the roadside, little knowing that he is a Duke on Foreign Office business. He falls for her immediately but enjoys her seeing him without his ducal trappings but his decision not to tell her of his title, comes back to bite him when she finds out! Loved this sweet story. Stolen Kisses 3.5* by Cerise DeLand - a sweet story of second chances but I found the narrative a little uneven and there were some editing issues, so not my favourite in this anthology. Charred Hope 5* by Caroline Warfield - a woman who wasn’t valued, now a poor widow finds happiness again with a major but not before a villain is vanquished. Love by Moonlight 5* by Elizabeth Ellen Carter - a Robin Hood highwayman righting wrongs, needs help from the vicar’s daughter, but is he making her a target? Fab little story. Forever & Always - The Secrets of Fontus Leigh 5* by Rue Allyn - a dangerous villain and the arrangement of an unwanted betrothal, strain a secret marriage yet to be annulled. A Bend in the Road 5* by Jude Knight - Lady Felicity tracks down the man she thought loved her but who disappeared without explanation two years previously. She is not at all amused to find out that her brother had a hand in that event.
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book from one of the authors via Booksprout. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
The Bluestocking Belles have joined up to offer a connected anthology featuring travel, house parties, smugglers, spies--and a mysterious highwayman. Who is the infamous Captain Moonlight? And how many lives will he change--for good or for ill? This anthology includes ten all new interconnected novellas that are sure to offer something for everyone including:
Sir Westcott Steals a Heart by Alina K. Field: Sir Westcott Twisden didn’t know he wanted to marry until the tallest lady he’d ever met crossed his path.
One Good Wager Leads to Another by Barbara Monajem: A young widow escaping her father. A spy in disguise. A long-ago but never-forgotten kiss.
Charred Hope by Caroline Warfield: A fool threw her and her miniature away. A wiser man treasures them both.
Stolen Kisses by Cerise DeLand: He kissed her once. Ruined her, too! Years later, he’s done it again. Love by Moonlight by Elizabeth Ellen Carter: By daylight, he's a gentleman. By moonlight, justice is served.
A Bend in the Road by Jude Knight: Can a grand lady and a washed-up sailor find a future together?
My Gift to You by Mary Lancaster: A rocky marriage and too many secrets… Is their love doomed? (This was my favorite of the collection – I love a good second chance romance)
A Duke in Peril by Meara Platt: Lady Florence's life is upended when she finds a handsome wounded soldier on the road.
Forever and Always by Rue Allyn: Lord Fontus shares a secret with Lady Deoiridh. Revealing the secret could be fatal. Or it could lead them to forever and always.
Falling Into You by Sherry Ewing: Sometimes a memory is hard to forget… After a year’s absence, is Milton too late to win Josephine back?
This anthology has several different tropes, miscommunication, second-chance romance, friends to lovers, and secret identities. All the novellas are low/no steam – kissing only romances and all deliver the promise of HEA. Many of the novellas feature characters from the author’s previous books, so this is the perfect set to read if you want to try new authors and find a new series.

The Belles & friends have produced 10 absolutely delightful novellas centred around the Normanton Hall house party. Well it includes a highwayman amongst the group & each novella begins with an extract from Principal Officer Robert Pierce's casebook. I read and reviewed a special copy of this book.

Regency Romance
I’ve been a fan of the Bluestocking Belles’ anthologies for years, probably since Alina K. Field first joined them. I’ve been a fan of Alina K. Field since she first published Rosalyn’s Ring and it won the 2014 Book Buyer’s Best contest. (It absolutely lived up to its reputation.)
So I was pleased to read and review Love’s Perilous Road, a collection of ten Regency Romances all centered around the mysterious highwayman, Captain Moonlight. All the characters have an encounter with the man, and there are brief journal entries from The Casebook of the Principal Office Robert Pierce who is planning Captain Moonlight’s capture—even if he leaves his ill-gotten gains in the chicken coops of young widows with children to feed.
As with all Bluestocking Belles Collections that I have read, all the stories are well written and very entertaining, which is not always the case with anthologies. I appreciate the care the authors take with their stories, adding in the clues to Captain Moonlight’s true identity.
Having said that, I still had my favorites: Charred Hope by Caroline Warfield in which an honorable man returns a miniature and finds a future. Sir Westcott Steals a Heart by Alina K. Field: Sybil Dunsford disguised herself as a boy to protect her brothers but, of course, Sir Westcott Twisden follows her, and hijinks ensue and they get locked in barn overnight. A Duke in Peril by Meara Platt: Lady Florence Swann rescues a wounded soldier from the side of the road near her home. But he’s more than just a soldier.
I’m looking forward to the Bluestocking Belles next collection.
I received an ARC from Booksprout and I'm willingly leaving a review. Average 3.58 stars TRIGGERS: Harassment, assault General: I don't think the stories are in chronological order and the authors should have talked to each other about the timeline and people's names. Penelope, the hostess, is often out of line and completely wrong in her assessments, especially in the last book (mind your own business!). #01 One Good Wager Leads to Another *****stars Beautiful and funny #02 My Gift to You ***stars Why would they do that to each other? #03 Falling Into You ***.5stars Fair story; end a bit cheesy #04 Sir Westcott Steals a Heart ****stars Lovely but a bit slow; harassment #05 A Duke In Peril ****stars Cute but too many emphasis on danger and protection #06 Stolen Kisses ****.25stars Cute and sad, but with a great end #07 Charred Hope ***stars Too much gossip; attempted r*ape w/violence and groping #08 Love by Moonlight ***stars Good story but details differ a lot from the other stories. Lots of love in both families #09 Forever and Always **.5stars Too many errors, mundane, people are not likeable (rude, petty, etc.). French words are awful. I thought it was ironic they had a chaperone while married. Good job on attacking the assailant in the cabin #10 A Bend in the Road ***.5stars Penelope is completely wrong in her assessment of people. S**ual harassment here too, mainly because Penelope permitted it. French words are awful (and why? No one is French). I loved both main characters
This is an amazing book. I couldn’t put it down. I have read most of the authors but somewhere new to me. Now I have some new ones to check out. This is a great book and stories for the price. Within the stories, there will be something for every reader. I love the suspense and intrigue that follows from story to story. Yet, each story has an ending for that couple too. It was a joy to read, and I would recommend it to all. This would be a great gift to those who like regency romance along with a who did it too. The highway man, Captain Moonlight has two sides to him he does steal from some but also seem to help right a ton of wrongs by evil, underhanded men. It's hard to decide if he is a villain or a new robin hood. With each story you will get closer to the truth and will be surprised too. I hope you grab a copy and plan not to get anything done by the end. I found myself reading late at night and first thing in the morning too. All the authors did a great job of keeping suspense and romance going till the end. I know I will be rereading it again for sure. I received an ARC from one of the authors and wish to thank them all. This is my honest opinion, and I am freely giving it to you.
Extremely well written, each of these novellas have much to give the readers. Full of drama, love, spies, society, smugglers, memories, dreams, ghosts, suspense, rumors, intrigue, secrets, a tall Lady, sailor, humor, highway man, widow, soldier, family, adventure, friends and second chances. Each and every one of these characters are so witty, ready to ignite the pages plus offer conflict keeping you reading . They all have some kind of personal and emotional growth that will occur in their story. Sir Westcott is fascinated by a tall Lady that he encounters while Sybil is tall and has a hard time of finding a man as tall or taller than herself. They meet at an assembly where he asks her to dance and after she is not sure what to do about him. To help support herself and her brothers, she gets involved and helps with the smuggling and raising pigs. After going back and forth , they are able to get to their happily ever after. As does the rest of these stories in this collection. Curl up and enjoy this collection from these talented, story-weaving authors. Would strongly recommend to all.

What happens when you have a house party on an estate, partygoers traveling, a few ghosts, and a highwayman handing out his own band of justice for good? A delightful ten-story collection by the Bluestocking Belles and friends. Each story is set in Regency England where the road to love is perilous but so satisfying. What I love about this collection of stories is how characters from one story appear in other stories. The highwayman is named Captain Moonlight and is a Robin Hood at heart. Love’s Perilous Road is a vibrant collection of Regency romance stories not to be missed.
Some of my favorites include Sir Westcott Steals a Heart by Alina K. Field, Charred Hope by Caroline Warfield, Stolen Kisses by Cerise DeLand, and My Gift to You by Mary Lancaster.
If you love Regency romance and want to read from some of the best historical romance authors, pick up Love’s Perilous Road.
This review relates specifically to Alina K. Field's novella in this collection. This story had quite a lot going on (I did have some trouble keeping up with all the characters introduced early on but things became clearer). I love how Sybil is fiercely protective of her madcap family. Wes notices her right off but I don't think he thought of her in a romantic sense at first. Sybil was determined not to think of Wes in that capacity, as she felt he would choose a member of the ton to be his bride. So a definite slow burn, but well worth it at the end. But many adventures took place leading up to the HEA, there was hardly a dull moment, which was great! I've read some of the other stories in this anthology and have liked them as well, so overall I would be happy if I purchased it. But I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
The stories were exceptionally well-written, featuring great characters and a compelling storylines that culminated in a very satisfying happy endings. This collection of new stories is centered around Sir Peter Somerville's House Party and Ball at Normanton Hall. A mysterious highwayman, "Captain Moonlight," adds peril and romance to the journeys of those attending. The interconnected characters and events create a cohesive and enjoyable collection. One story, "Falling Into You" by Sherry Ewing, features Milton Sutton, Earl of Langley. He breaks his engagement to Lady Josephine Cranfield to save his father from bankruptcy, but his failure to explain leaves her hurt and unwilling to forgive him when he returns a year later.
What a fantastic collection of stories by the Bluestocking Belles authors and their friends!! It had ghosts, smugglers, a highwayman, a house party, romance and so much more. It was the perfect book to read at this time of the year and did not disappoint at all!! I thought each author did a fantastic job with creating stories that were uniquely theirs but still intertwined them together. I really liked how the characters would appear in other stories besides their own and how the book flowed from one story to another. Overall I felt each story was definitely worth 5 stars. I truly enjoyed each and every one of them and thought they were all fabulous!! I highly recommend this book!!
This is an engaging collection of stories, some by well loved authors and one or two that were new to me. I have read all the stories and thoroughly enjoyed them. they are all connected in some way, either by the same people popping up or the Somerville’s house party and ball. There are also the links between each story concerning the notes of Officer Pierce, who is looking to catch a lady thief and a highwayman known as Captain Moonlight. As expected there is romance in every story but all are enjoyable. I received a copy via Booksprout and have voluntarily reviewed it. All thoughts and opinions are my own. However, I did preorder my own copy.
This ten-author anthology is a charming whirlwind of romance, mystery, and mischief, all set against the backdrop of Sir Peter Somerville’s countryside house party. Each story is a gem—whether it’s ghostly wagers, second-chance love, highwaymen antics, or vigilante justice, the Belles of Normanton Hall deliver captivating characters and heartfelt plots with seamless continuity. Captain Moonlight’s shadowy presence adds intrigue, while the interconnected tales offer hours of delightful escapism. I was thoroughly entertained from start to finish—and yes, the housework can wait!.

A wonderful group of stories set in the regency period by some excellent authors. Each story has wonderful characters and there may be a couple of twists in one or two of them that keep you wondering what's going to happen. The background of the stories is interesting and the interaction between the characters is always fun especially when romance is involved. There might be a few unexpected secrets or issues that come up that may hinder the characters from doing what they need to do. Good set of stories.

The Bluestocking Belles have done it again! They've given historical romance readers a delightful collection of ten novellas that are interwoven and yet unique as each author's talent shines in her own addition to the group of stories. Each novella is well-developed and enjoyable to read, with charming characters that the reader can get behind and root for their happy endings. For me, it was a collection that came together relatively seamlessly, with endearing tales that made me smile. Definitely not a collection to be missed!.

Love's Perilous Road is a Collection of Novellas set in the regency era.
Notable mention: My Gift To You by Mary Lancaster. I loved this one. We get two very stubborn characters who just need to have a proper converation with each other. But instead they misinterpret a lot of things which causes the conversations to go in the wrong direction. But even with their misconceptions about each other you can still feel the love they have for each other.
This was a great set of a number of novellas. Great read!.
4.5 stars Once again, the Bluestocking Belles and Friends have put together an enjoyable and entertaining collection of stories. While each is about its own couple and displays the authors talent, there is an overarching thread that links them all together. There is something for everyone in this anthology. The Bluestocking Belles never disappoint. I enjoyed spending time in this world which these various characters. The stories are easy to read and get into.
I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.
