The story follows FMC Emmy, who is struggling with self doubt and insecurities due to her boyfriend (quickly ex boyfriend). And MMC CJ, who is an absolute gem, who is a dancer at a club (which he part owns) when they first meet.

I loved the first meeting, it was *chef kiss*, the connection, the chemistry!. Then throughout the story, they end up meeting again and so on, fate will have it! I love that Emmy and CJ had this chemistry and just generally gravitated towards each other.

Throughout their friendship/relationship there is threats, twists and drama which had me on the edge of my seat! The way the MMC is supportive, patience and the perfect book boyfriend!

The found family element was absolutely adorable, the whole book was so good and got me out of a book slump! If you love Romantic Suspense, Cinnamon Roll MMC, Small Town, Dual POV, Strangers to Friends to Lovers! This book is 100% for you!
Thank you JJ Cross for this ARC!

Emmy and Cas, cutest couple.

Emmy is so relatable I think reading this I was just loving have relatable she is and thinking to myself she sounds like me. She’s a curvy girl who overthinks a lot and doesn’t think she deserves the things in her life.

Cas comes along a walking green flag and shows her she does deserve everything good in life.

I really enjoyed this book. It was nice Emmy being a main character and relatable I enjoyed that and would recommend it.

Thank you for letting me arc read

This book exceeded my expectations.
It was fun, relatable, realistic, heartwarming, and a little scary.

FMC Emmy is sweet and so wonderful but filled with so much of self doubt, self-deprecation and overthinks every little thing when she is around anyone new because of her previous partner. She is, however, so comfortable and at ease around her best friend Hayleigh that the real Emmy shines through. They're the coolest best friends.

MMC CJ, who also goes by Cas, is a walking green flag. Being the youngest out of 6 brothers, he is so mature and full of love but still has that fun and easy side to him. He is so protective and caring to Emmy, and that really gives Emmy the ability to heal and love herself again.

Cjs family are amazing, soft but strong parents, and the brothers with their banter, giving each other stick was hilarious, and their and his best friend Vics instant love and protectiveness over Emmy was so heartfelt 🥹.

There's a thriller/suspense element to this book, which is scary and insane! It really gave this book an edge.

I can not speak about this book enough to recommend it enough.

thank you, J.J. Cross, for this ARC

Without a shred of doubt, this book deserves 5⭐️

J.J. Cross’s Built on Love is a heartwarming romance that explores themes of self-love, overcoming insecurities, found family, and healing through unconditional support. The story follows Emily Hart (Emmy), who struggles with deeply rooted self-doubt after years of emotional manipulation from an ex, and Casper Peterson (CJ), who has sworn off love and trust after a painful betrayal six years ago. Fate intertwines their lives when they become unexpected roommates, setting the stage for a slow-burning friendship that gradually mends the parts of them broken by others.

Emmy, once plagued by self-doubt and incessant apologies, finds the courage to embrace confidence and live unapologetically. Meanwhile, Cas, who believed love was beyond his reach, slowly opens up to Emmy in ways he never imagined. However, their growing bond faces an external threat—a shadowy figure determined to unravel their happiness, bringing them even closer as they fight to hold onto the love they are building.

Their chemistry is undeniable, enriched by witty banter, emotional vulnerability, and a deep, unspoken understanding. The supporting cast, including family, brothers, and friends, injects humor into the otherwise tense narrative, adding layers of warmth and camaraderie. As their connection deepens, Emmy and Cas must navigate their personal insecurities and the looming danger with the unwavering support of those around them.

The author masterfully weaves a tender, evocative love story, making Built on Love an engaging read for romance enthusiasts. With its blend of emotional healing, suspense, and found family dynamics, it’s a novel that lingers in the heart long after the final page.

Built on Love is a heartfelt, romantic suspense that blends emotional healing, found family, and a swoony friends-to-lovers arc—then throws in a twist you will not see coming.

Emmy is starting over after having her heart broken by a narcissistic ex. And Cas is a total green flag! Exactly the kind of steady, supportive presence she needs. Their chemistry builds naturally, and their friendship forms the strongest foundation for the love they share. I absolutely loved the themes of found family and second chances—and the dual POV really lets you fall for both characters.

The suspense thread added an exciting edge without overshadowing the romance, and the twist had me gasping and kept me flying through the final chapters. I loved the build-up, but I need to know what happened to Emmy’s ex and his brother after the ending—they definitely left a few threads I hope get pulled in a future book!

Huge thank you to J.J Cross for the ARC—I’m fully invested in this series and already excited to meet the rest of the brothers!

Wow!!! this one blew my mind!
The plot twist was SO unexpected: I was hoping for a romance story and got into a thriller. 🤯
Cas and Emmy are both so funny and sweet.
And the Shenanigans between Cas and his brothers are hilarious 😂 !
The growth both main characters experience is absolutely beautiful, just as their relationship.
She goes from this unsure person to get it together. and he learns to trust and love again. Is sublime.

Thanks, JJ, for this ARC copy, I had a blast!

There is two things I absolutely loved about this book! One bring it was set in the UK and you read lots of British phases and wording! Being a Uk girly myself I felt right at home reading this book!

And the second thing being that even though it was a romance book, it had a thriller element too and I find that so fascinating and interesting.

On to the characters, I adored Emmy, she was unsure of herself but overtime she grew stronger and become more confident in herself which I loved. And Cas….oh my he was a walking green flag and in the best way, they were fun, and they were cheesy together but in the best way because the chemistry and the instant connection that had was amazing!!

As for the story I enjoyed it! I loved how it was a light, cute romance book but then another part of it was full of twist, suspense and mystery and I loved the thriller part to it, because it had you on the edge of your seat.

My take from it! A good solid story, fantastic characters, well written, a enjoyable read. And I don’t know what the author’s plans are but I’m invested in the Peterson brothers now, I’m hoping each one may get their own story! 💙🥰

UPDATED REVIEW:

I would like to say a huge thank you to J.J Cross for allowing me to apart of her publishing journey!🥹💕 Being in the street team, an ARC and Beta reader has been an honour and i’ve loved every moment of it!!

Built on Love is a heart-warming romance where the FMC Emmy is a victim of a toxic relationship, she deserves the absolute best and that is what the MMC, Cas, gives her.
With support of Cas and caring side characters, she overcomes insecurities and finds her confidence.

This story is an emotional, heart warming roller coaster that explores character development and the sensation emotion of feeling understood and wanted.

Overview and characters explained:

Cas is outgoing, caring and just an overall green flag. He had me swooning the entire book and it’s always a good time when he’s around 😉 He cares for Emmy and shows her a new side to love♥️ With an innocent job as a construction worker but a dancer by night 😉 Their first interaction is in the club…🤭

Emmy is so sweet, I just want to give her a big hug. She’s an amazing best friend and I wish I had one like her!! She’s described as a happy, selfless person to be around. She sees the best in everyone including her ex (ew!!)

Emmy and Cas somehow end up being roomates, forced proximity 😏, making it even harder to resist the pull of eachother. (The tension had me blushing!!)

Positives:

Cas’ big family make the book even better, adding banter and humour! I have a specific interest to Cole, the brooding older brother who’s so intriguing, I want to know more about him🤫

And also Rafe, brooding but also enjoyable and MIGHT be my favourite twin🤪

This was wrote beautifully and I could not put this down! I loved being apart of the process of this amazing Romance book🥹

Reading all the emotions and feelings were so realistic it was like I was actually there! Scenes were so easy to imagine and it flowed nicely throughout the whole book.

It wouldn’t be a good book without twists, would it?😝 The ending you will NOT expect and it had me staying up all night and thinking about it constantly after I finished the book.

I don’t want to give too much away as I’ve already wrote a review before the update but Please, please, PLEASE read this!!

A relaxing, fluffy, swoon-worthing romance that will have you hooked.

J.J, you’ve done such an amazing job with this 5 star book and you deserve all the love you have coming. Never be afraid to publish your hard work. It’s meaningful in a way people may never understand, the topics of self-love and feeling wanted is something people long for. And you’ve done a beautiful job with writing it.

Built on Love by JJ Cross — 4 stars

I wasn’t totally sure how I felt when I first started this book — some of the early dialogue felt a little clunky to me — but oh my god did I eat this up once things started moving! A romance with a whodunnit twist? Say less. The second half had me absolutely hooked, and I genuinely think the writing got stronger as the story progressed.

While I did struggle a bit with some of the initial dialogue, the overall writing was great, and I found myself really growing attached to the characters. The Peterson family? Obsessed. I cannot wait to dive into book two — I need more!

I’m so sad it’s taken me this long to find this series! I’ve been fortunate to be selected to ARC read the third book of this series. I couldn’t wait to jump into these books, and I’m so glad I decided to start at the beginning, so I can really understand and grow to love these characters.

˖⁺‧₊˚ ♡ ˚₊‧⁺˖ ♡ ˖⁺‧₊˚ ♡ ˚₊‧⁺˖ ♡ ˖⁺‧₊˚ ♡ ˚₊‧⁺˖

♡ I was so mad because I started reading this book, got about 40% of the way through, and then had some eye issues, so I had to take a break. I literally would have devoured this book like a woman starved if I had the chance. I really loved the Peterson brothers and their dynamics. Their group chats and banter were perfect for alleviating tension, because J. J Cross was absolutely not afraid to take us into some darker themes. You will not find me complaining because this book had me giggling and kicking my feet one moment, to crawling in my skin and launching my kindle into the atmosphere with how on edge I felt.

♡ Built on Love had fantastic pacing, I didn’t feel burnt out at any point. I sometimes struggle with romance books where they fall in love immediately and there’s just no stakes to keep the characters growing and changing. This book had stakes in abundance! Just when I was settling in for a cute and cosy book about a girl who just got out of a toxic relationship, learning to love herself again and her super hot new roommate, I was hit with the most chilling and hair raising tension! I couldn’t consume this book fast enough. This book will keep you on the edge of your seat throughout its duration. The twists and turns? Great! Fantastic! I have no notes.

♡ Emmy, my sweet summer child, she is loyal to a fault. You absolutely want this girl in your corner. She will always do right by you and be your best cheerleader. I adored her straight away. Any time she was horrible to herself I wanted to shake her and tell her that no man is worth the sadness she was going through. Especially not a man named Chad! One thing I will say, is that I’ve never known a person to fall down as often as she did. That girl spent more time tripping and falling onto her own face, than anyone should. As someone with bad balance and terrible spatial awareness, I feel seen, but also so concerned because girl, are you ok??

♡ Another thing that really endeared me to this book/ series is the friendships our FMC makes with the women in her life. Her and Hayleigh are literally perfect for each other. Hayleigh is that friend that will go to bat for you every single time. She champions all your successes and will literally square up, in all her 5 ft 2 glory, and go toe-to-toe to anyone who’s disrespects those she cares about. She is a once in a lifetime friend that I hope we all get to experience.

♡ Cas, the king of consent and positive affirmations, the man that you are!! Despite everything that happens to Emmy, him and his family, he will never ever take choices away from her. When something dark and dangerous lurks around every corner, he ignores his instincts to hide information away from her, always letting her make a choice on whether she sees the dark, gritty truth. He never makes decisions for her and I love him for that. This man is the literal standard, the effort he went to, to include Emmy in his life and welcome her to his family, made me so emotional. He was so down bad for her immediately but I love the way he respected her and never pushed boundaries. Everything was on her terms, always.

♡ I loved my life reading this book, so if you’re in the mood for a cute contemporary romance, with danger and suspense hiding beneath the surface, you will enjoy this!

✨Built On Love by JJ Cross✨

⭐⭐⭐.5
🌶️🌶️

Built On Love had the beginnings of a great novel. We have a FMC who is oblivious to her surroundings 95% of the time and a piece of crap boyfriend who just takes advantage of her at every turn. Until he doesn’t. I will say that I did not like Joseph which means I felt something. But it was fleeting.

Emmy’s best friend and her seem to be in the same routine when anything bad ever happens, boxed wine and trash tv. Which I am all for (because it shows they are close and lean on one another) however it felt very repetitive.

Ironically, our MMC, CJ or Cas ends up being the individual offering a room up for rent. It felt too perfect after their interaction at the club during Hayleigh’s hen party. Running into someone on the street or coffee place feels more like a meet cue than an ad in a paper being the exact person who gave you the feels a few nights before.

CJ & his brothers end up having to deal with someone breaking into their construction site. They think it’s kids, I know better. Unfortunately, I had pegged our stalker from the moment I saw this character’s development. There was no ‘A HA’ moment of wow, this is the person who wants Emmy all to himself. It felt too predictable.

The reason for him wanting her made sense but there was no real background as to why he wanted her over Hayleigh. There were missing bits to the stalker vibe.

The intimate scenes felt copy and pasted into the story. I think with some additions this could have been a great book.

Honestly, it fell a little flat for me.

Built on Love by J.J. Cross – Review

Built on Love is a heartfelt romantic suspense that blends healing, friendship, and romance with just the right amount of intrigue.

Cas and Emmy first meet at a hen party when he dances for her, but what starts as an unexpected encounter quickly turns into something much deeper. Both are carrying wounds from past relationship traumas, yet fate seems determined to keep bringing them together. Watching their relationship develop through friendship, trust, and healing was one of my favorite parts of the story.

Cas is incredibly easy to fall in love with. He is caring, patient, and exactly the kind of book boyfriend you can’t help but root for. The connection between him and Emmy felt genuine, and I loved seeing them help each other move forward from their pasts.

While this is ultimately a sweet romance, the romantic suspense elements add plenty of twists and turns that kept me guessing. The story does touch on darker themes, but I wouldn’t classify it as a dark romance.

J.J. Cross has a wonderful writing style that immediately pulls you into the story. Her characters are always full of heart, compassion, and authenticity, making them easy to connect with and cheer for.

If you enjoy romantic suspense with lovable characters, emotional healing, a touch of spice, and some darker notes woven throughout, Built on Love is definitely worth picking up.

please do we the Trigger warning ⚠️
it deals with your body image, being in an unhealthy relationship at the beginning, mention of side character not being able to have children. Kidnapping and drugging

I felt so deeply for Emmy 🥺 , with Chad you already
had a feeling he is manipulative and being mean with
her self image and withdrawal and being good enough impacting her physically and mentally. I'm glad through out the book that she had Hayleigh to support her and have her back being her best friend. Throughout the book I straight away didn't like the vibe of Chad and his older brother Pete ( Hayleigh fiance ) they've gave me manipulative energy.

oh woohoo, first interaction with Cas first was hot 🥵 . That's was intense instant attraction even in miss of confusion with everything going on in Emmy mind and heart.

Cas and Emmy being room mates is a journey, love the tension but most importantly him making sure she knows she beautiful and her actions and feelings matter. He'll always be there for her even as a friend. Meeting Cas's brothers nd parents were everything and becoming her extended found family and support system with what challenges and danger they had to endure kept my heart pounding. I was expecting what happened and I gasped in shocked which I still am.

Not gonna lie, I found myself laughing a lot at some of the early chapters. The answering the door in the towel scene made me laugh so hard.

JJ has a wonderful sense of humour and adds this beautifully throughout, keeping the lighter romance elements deliciously light. She loves writing green flag men, and Cas was exactly that.

Emmy is a gorgeous curvy FMC who still has insecurities over her body from her previous relationship & JJ handles this with a perfect amount of sensitivity while  empowering her to reach self love throughout.

The feeling of family you get from Cas's brothers is so endearing & leaves you wanting to have Christmas dinner with them. I can't wait to hear the brothers' stories, too.

Yet make no mistake, JJs suspense story kicks butt & will have you looking in different places for an answer as to who the predator is. This was cleverly done with twists and turns, with moments that make your heart race.

The story was brilliant; perfect pacing, nice build up, solid green flag relationship, a nice sprinkling of s3xy spice & all the drama & plot twists happening outside of the main relationship. 100% my type of romance & would recommend this as a fantastic, romantic suspense.

🦋 Built on Love by J.J. Cross 🦋

This definitely gets 5 stars from me! I got through this book so quick!!

The story follows Emmy who is the FMC, she struggles with self doubt and insecurities after being manipulated from her ex.

In an unexpected turn of events Emmy meets Casper and from that moment she realises he is everything that she has needed and more!

Whilst Emmy and Cas are getting to know each other there is an external threat that is doing everything to stop them from being together!

I loved this book! It’s a sweet romance book with suspense and mystery with a little bit of spice sprinkled on top.

Great characters, well written and a really good read!! After my last read I was worried about starting a new book and potentially ending up in a slump! However this book prevented this!!

Tropes included are:
* Romantic Suspense
* Cinnamon Roll MMC
* Small Town
* Strangers to Friends to Lovers
* Forced Proximity
* Dual POV
* Found Family

Thank you so much to EverAfterPR and J. J. Cross for the arc of Built on Love for my honest review!! I love it and can’t wait to see what is next for the Peterson brothers! ❤️❤️

Cas is mysterious and all so thrilling
The Peterson brothers are cheeky and funny
One of my fave brothers is Cole who's best friends with Lacey.
Emmy reminds me of the absolute most beautiful girl in the world that I know.
Irene and her diner just seems so comforting and so homely.

Reading the book makes you feel like your living and seeing what your reading it’s the most amazing romance book I have read in a while, the author has used phrases and words to create scenes and pictures in the readers head the book is well thought out and I can’t wait to read the next book it’s all so exciting, thrilling and in the parts when Emmy gets treated horrendously by her ex boyfriend and the things he said to her really hits home in a familiar place and I think it’s an important message for other girls reading this that no matter how hard a relationship gets you must leave if you do not feel loved, appreciated and your being physically and mentally and emotionally abused by someone

I loved that this was set in the UK! Most of the romances I read are US based, probably because of my penchant for small town/cowboy romances! So this was a nice little surprise!
Feels weird to say this was a cute romance, what with the suspense/thriller storyline that runs throughout…but Emmy and CJ were the cutest! He is a cinnamon roll, walking green flag and she’s so sweet and relatable! Seeing her find herself again and feel deserving of the love she was receiving was simply lovely!
The brothers are hilarious, and totally the type you can call in the middle of the night and they will come to your aid. Thankfully, there are loads of them so hopefully that will mean this series can keep me entertained for a while to come!

The smile I had on my face as Cas (almost perfect) got introduced did not disappear. The shenanigans the brothers got up to, the banter, the ridiculous text & love just enchanting. Emma was a sweetheart, though at times her insecurities made me fustrated. Absolutely hilarious yet amazing friendship between Emmy & Hayleigh was so genuine. I loved the instant attraction, the slow burn of tenderness, the scorching heat between Cas & Emmy. Suspense was interlaced with confusion, suspicion & disbelief rolled out well throughout. Unquestionably enjoyed every page!

This was a great read, both a good romance with a thriller included - I enjoyed the anticipation of waiting to find out who the 'bad guy' was.

I was genuinely attached to the characters, particularly the FMC from the start a rooting her on and invested in her journey. It's also nice that it's set in the UK.

I really enjoyed unpacking the mystery - the writer managed to keep the pace going without giving away too much which is often where a thriller can go wrong.

Loved it from start to finish, couldn't put it down and read it in one day! Can't recommend enough.

I recently reviewed the 3rd book in the Peterson series by J.J. Cross. Well now I have devoured the first one! So good i read it in 36 hours. I was new to the Peterson brother books so this is the 2nd of the 3 books I read. It meant I did know quite a big part of Emmy and Cas's story before reading but i didnt feel like it stopped me enjoying the story or feeling like i had missed out on enjoying that plot.

Loved that there was spice but not too much as well!

Another great book J.J. Cross!
