Should I read in order?
This is the first in Bennett’s new series Blackchapel Bastards. But there is a brief mention of Bennett’s Suitor’s Crossing (another series)

Basic plot:
Allison can barely take care of herself, but has no problem diving in front of danger to save a man – a man that doesn’t let her go once she recovers...

Give this a try if you want:
- contemporary romance
- mostly Boston setting
- mafia-ish family
- he nurses her back to health
- rich hero (millionaire?)
- he’s a bit of a stalker…
- very protective hero
- hero has been celibate for bit
- he’ll give you deep pressure to calm your anxieties
- silver fox hero
- he feeds her
- heroine has a background in graphic design
- praise, light somno elements (one scene starts with her asleep), very light edging, light spanking
- higher steam – this feels like a touch of a shorter page count (less than 200 pages) with 4ish full scenes plus some alluded to extras

Ages:
- heroine is almost 30, hero is probably similar – it’s been 20 years since he was taken to Blackchapel as a child but I don’t think an exact age is mentioned.

First line:
Once upon a time, seven illegitimate sons of the world’s most powerful men arrived at Blackchapel Manor.

My thoughts:
I love, love, love the idea of this series! I have adored many of Bennett’s HR work (under Jemma Frost) and have tried a few of her Suitor’s Crossing novels from this pen name – but they were definitely more light, quick and instalove/lust. Which are perfect for when I’m in the mood for that but I usually prefer something a touch slower burn and more gritty.

And this series is set up perfectly for that. I very much love over the top MMCs like Mathias and he really delivered the protective and possessive hero type. I loved the touch of slower burn between them – the layering of that tension was really delightful and had me falling into their relationship.

I had just a few things that took it down a touch for me – I wanted MORE from the dom side of the hero. The build up with the control was so good and all the kink elements I loved but they were just too light for me – I was left wanting more, more, more. I wanted it to be a bit more developed. What we got was so good though - I am certainly intrigued and will be reading more in the series.

A few other minor things – the few chapters from the other future heroes POV was annoying to me and took me out of our main’s story – but I am always whiny about that 😂

And I thought the ending with the hero’s grand gesture was just a bit too silly for me – but I really adored the ending overall. The epilogue you get as a download at the end of the book is cute and totally worth it – It wrapped up a loose end that niggled at me since the beginning of the story! Very happy with it.

Whispered Desire by Hallie Bennett ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Dark. Intense. Addictive. Mathias and Allison’s story wrecked me in the best way.

From the moment Allison saves Mathias, everything changes. He’s a cold, calculating mafia boss with the world at his feet—until this curvy, vulnerable woman becomes his obsession, his anchor, his everything. The chemistry? Explosive. The emotional pull? Raw and real.

Allison isn’t your typical heroine—she’s battling demons most people never see, and her journey is powerful and honest. Watching her come into her own while navigating the dangerous, protective world of the Blackchapel Bastards was both heartbreaking and empowering.

Mathias is the kind of morally gray alpha who will burn down the world for the woman he loves—and I was here for every unhinged, possessive moment.

This book is a perfect storm of:
• Mafia heat with an emotional punch
• Curvy girl representation done right
• Mental health struggles written with care
• A hero who’s as dangerous as he is devoted

Whispered Desire isn’t just a mafia romance—it’s a story about finding light in the darkest places and the healing power of love. Fair warning: Mathias doesn’t play fair, and neither does fate.

Blackchapel Manor is a nightmare where the young are hidden away, tossed to the side and where the Blackchapel Bastards are made. Revenge is the only thing learned and worked for here.
This is Mathias' story.
Mathias' is determined to tear his father's company to shreds. He has them right where he wants them, they have no choice but to give in to his demands. Then, he'll end him. He's trained for this all of his life, or rather tortured, endured it. The next thing he knows, some petite woman is pushing him out of the way of a barrage of gunfire. What he wants to know is, why. No one does things out of the kindness of their heart.
Allison is a shell of the person she used to be. Taken advantage of by everyone, she longs for escape. Even if it's through nothingness, well, she thinks about it. She's tired of being the responsible one.
She was looking forward to the job-related trip to Paris, just to get away from her roommate who doesn't work, doesn't clean up after herself or her pets or even buy food for them. Not to mention her parents who ignore her and a brother that does the same until he wants her to give him money.
She wakes up in the hospital and remembers jumping in front of a stranger to save him from a drive by. She thought at least one of her co-workers would be there but instead, it's the stranger. What's he accusing her of? She saved his life for goodness sake. Then after questioning her, he just leaves.
She confuses him. Who does random acts of kindness?
She returns home to find a very large sum of money in her account. Figuring it was a mistake, she backtracks it to the depositor, Blackchapel Inc.
Once again, he's confused. Why won't she spend the money he put into her account? He's not obsessed, not really, but he's going to find out. Once he gets to her place and sees how she's living, what she's dealing with, he can't leave her there. He has to take her away from it, take care of her, claim her. She's his, he knew it from the moment he held her in his arms after she was shot in Paris. She needs him to take over, take control so she won't have to make the decisions, so no one can take advantage of her anymore.
She loves the way he handles everything. It's the first time anyone has ever stuck up for her and the way he handled her roommate, she could swoon. She feels so free. So why is she still having the same thoughts of harming herself?
He soon knows that she needs more help than he can give and he's going to get her all the help she needs.
Two people, broken in separate ways. Both need each other like they need to breathe. When his world touches her, he will do whatever it takes to save her.
This story deals with some mental health issues and I'm glad it's dealt with instead of being written like love and his "magic wand" was a cure-all. And treat yourself to the free bonus epilogue, it's a perfect ending.
A very interesting and steamy start to a new series.

Allie and Mathias struck a chord in my heart! Allie was by far one of the most relatable characters I've ever read. The way Mathias listened to Allie and didn’t dismiss her feelings showed such depth in their relationship. That kind of supportive communication really made this story stand out, especially when dealing with heavy topics like anxiety and depression. There was just enough suspense wrapped up in this story, that it didn't over shadow the emotional elements.

This author crafted characters and a world that felt real and immersive. I'm really looking forward to the next books in this series.

Allison hates pain, so why does she continue to step between him and the gun being fired at him?

Once upon a time seven young boys met when they were sent to Blackchapel Manor to be educated in the art of torture and killing. They will use this knowledge to kill anyone who would get in their way of killing the men who sired and then abandoned them. They were the illegitimate sons of some of the world's most powerful men.

They became known as the Blackchapel Bastards. They are Mathias Beaumont, Aleksei and Dmitri Petrov, Luca D’Amora, Jonah Anderson, Hugo Steele, and Rafael Vasquez. They were orphaned and unskilled when they entered. They left as dangerous men craving retribution.

This is the story of Mathias Beaumont and his target, Louis Petit, his father. His father has fought hard to become leader of the legal and black market trade of pharmaceuticals.

Mathias was killing men when he was only twelve. Their teacher was Hugo's father, Conrad Steele, who raised the boys at Blackchapel Manor. His quest was to bring down The Syndicate, an underground group that controls the black market and various facets of world governments. Their fathers are the majority of the leaders of The Syndicate. Conrad had been blackballed from the organization. He retaliated by kidnapping the boys, some from their mothers, to take down the organization. Unfortunately for him, they didn't like being turned into mercenaries at such a young age and didn't allow that to happen. Conrad died a bitter old man.

Allison Fields is ready to embark on a trip to Paris. She's always been the responsible one, caring for first her family and now her roommate, Bailey, who became her friend in college. Now, five years later, they're roommates, but Bailey takes advantage of her, ignoring her unless she needs something from Allison. Bailey quit her job two years ago, leaving Allison to support her, plus her two dogs and a cat.

Allison has always been the caregiver. She felt responsible for trying to keep her parents from divorcing and seeing to her younger brother's needs.

The pressure she's placed on herself has caused her to have mental health issues. She's often thought of committing suicide, but the thought of suffering pain has kept her from doing that.

While in Paris, she's witness to a murder attempt on Mathias and/or Luca. She steps in front of Mathias, taking two bullets that would otherwise have hit him. He can't figure out her angle for doing something like that. He deposits one million dollars into her bank account and is astounded when she doesn't spend any of it. She does verify with him that the money is hers to do whatever she wishes with it. She then withdraws just enough to pay off her student loans.

When he investigates her apartment building, he's appalled at her living conditions. He asks why she hasn't moved to somewhere safer and nicer. She doesn't want to pay the cancellation fee on her lease. Another million dollars is transferred to her account.

Coming to the conclusion that she needs a keeper, he appoints himself to the position. It soon occurs to him that he's as dependent on her as she is on him.

On the cusp of destroying his father, she again takes another bullet for him. But this time she isn't as lucky as the first time...

The Blackchapel Bastards are no ordinary band of brothers. Illegitimate sons of powerful men, they were cast aside like dirty secrets—handed over to a man with his own agenda and trained to become ruthless weapons of vengeance. Bound not by blood but by trauma and loyalty, these seven men are as close as it gets, and this explosive first installment centers around their unofficial leader, Mathias. While in Paris to orchestrate a hostile takeover of his father’s company, Mathias’s path collides—literally—with Allison, a petite woman who shoves him out of the way of a drive-by shooting and takes two bullets for her trouble. For a man raised in violence and betrayal, her selflessness is baffling. Who risks their life for a stranger? No one. Especially not in Mathias’s world. At first, I’ll admit I found Allison frustrating—a bit of a doormat. She lets everyone walk all over her: a freeloading roommate, emotionally manipulative parents, and a needy younger brother. She’s exhausted by always being the responsible one, longing for peace, for someone to carry some of the weight. But as her story unfolds, her strength quietly emerges. When she discovers a large sum of money mysteriously deposited into her account, she finally pieces together who Mathias really is. Still, she barely touches the money. And that restraint? It absolutely floors him. The more he learns about her, the more obsessed he becomes. When he shows up at her door and sees the chaos of her life firsthand, he makes a decision—she needs his protection, his guidance… and he wants to be the one to give it to her. What I loved most is how the story handles Allison’s mental health. Mathias doesn’t try to “fix” her with tough love or dismiss her struggles. He sees her anxiety, her exhaustion, and her craving for someone to just take the reins and he steps in without judgment. But this isn’t a one-sided rescue fantasy. Allison fulfills something deep inside Mathias too. Her submissive nature mirrors his need for control, and together, they create a dynamic that’s emotionally charged, deeply intimate, and respectful. And bonus points: Mathias isn’t your stereotypical overbearing dominant. He listens. He lets her speak. He doesn’t steamroll her doubts or concerns. Their connection is messy, sexy, and unexpectedly tender. If I had one tiny gripe, it’s that the final confrontation between Mathias and his father felt a bit underwhelming. I wanted more fire, more fallout. But honestly, that’s a small price to pay in a book that delivers this much heart, heat, and satisfying vengeance. This is dark romance done right—equal parts spicy, emotional, and thrilling. And with Luca’s story next? I need it yesterday.

This story is a big departure from the author's normal works. I was hesitant going in as sometimes when an author tries something new it doesn't always work out. But this was dark, gritty, morally gray and I absolutely loved every second of it.

It definitely wasn't a meet-cute when Allison and Mathias meet for the first time, or the second, or truthfully any time they met. But there was something there in the dynamics of their personalities that made these two perfect for each other. And the way that Mathias took control over Allison and made her feel safe, cared for and protected - just melted my heart.

There are quite a few very dark moments and scenes while Allison deals with her inner demons and her anxiety, depression and OCD. If anything like that could potentially bother you, heed the author's warnings at the beginning of the book. It's brutally honest and not sugar coated at all. But watching the ways that Mathias learns to walk her through the episodes and make her feel safe, secure and calm is a show of a loving partner.

Their sexual exploits start out slowly, but quickly build and I had started to think that I missed something while reading as I couldn't remember their first kiss. I even went back and searched the text for the word kiss and lips, and found nothing in what I'd already read. The first kiss happens past the half way point, which I found unbelievable, but then when they got to that part, it was oddly romantic for how late in the game it came.

I loved the subtle nod to the author's Suitor's Crossing series. I even knew the book she was referring to which made me smile. I love when authors put Easter eggs in their stories for devoted readers to catch.

I also loved that we got sneak peaks into Luca and Jonah and who their potential ladies might be for the upcoming books in the series. I can't wait to delve into Luca's story next. I feel like this whole series is going to be one that I love and will crave each new release. Hopefully there isn't long between each book as I'm not sure I can wait that long to get more of this dark world these men were raised in and currently exacting their revenge in.

TROPES:
-dark mafia
-mental health rep (anxiety, panic attacks, depression, suicidal ideation-FMC)
-dom/sub vibes
-touch her and die
-"Mine."

Wowwww. I wasn't sure what I expected going into this, but I really, really loved it. I one-clicked because it hinted at mental health rep in the synopsis. Our FMC is really going through it. :( She's in her late 20s, being used by nearly everyone in her life, and struggling to make it through each day.

Her job sends her to Paris, where she meets our MMC who has his own story. Him and his six brothers-in-arms were raised to kill, and they have it out for the parents who abandoned them. It all changes when our MMC is just walking down the street, someone starts shooting- and he gets tackled by a stranger, the FMC, who takes two bullets for him.

Weeks down the road, the MMC checks in on the FMC who lives a few states away. And he's landblasted. By her living conditions, what she's going through on a daily basis, all of it. He asks her if she needs someone to take control of her life, she says yes, and the deal is DONE. He promptly bundles her up, packs her stuff, and brings her home.

As the story progresses, their chemistry builds insanelyyyy high. And as he learns more about her, most especially her suicidal ideation, he wants to help her that much more. And even more than that, he wants HER to help HERSELF for once in her life. :)

This story was written so well, and the mental health rep was spot on- at least from my POV. I related to the FMC so much, especially the suicidal ideation and her constant stream of invasive thoughts. I can't wait to dive into the next book!

SAFETY:
Virgin/celibate/manwhore?: virgin heroine, celibate hero
OM/OW drama?: none
Cheating/sharing? none
Triggers: depression, anxiety, panic attacks, suicidal ideation, kidnapping
Kinks: dom/sub vibes, bdsm, dirty talk, praise, dry humping, "good girl", hand necklaces, rough sex, somnophilia
HEA?: yes!

My bookshelves may reveal spoilers.

I absolutely love Mathias and Allison!

"Whispered Desire" marks the beginning of a new mafia lite romance series, and it brings a refreshing perspective on the instalove stories we often see from author Hallie Bennett. This book truly captures the emotional journey of Mathias and Allie, taking us through their ups and downs as they work toward their happily ever after.

Mathias and his brothers grew up surrounded by the pain of their father's abandonment, fostering feelings of vengeance and revenge. Meanwhile, Allie has faced her own struggles, often overlooked and mistreated by those she thought cared for her. This treatment has led her to battle anxiety and deep depression. Their connection is powerful; Allie’s bravery saved Mathias’s life in Paris, but it’s the unwavering support he offers her that truly transforms their relationship. He respects her feelings and steps in to help when she feels overwhelmed, showing her that it’s okay to lean on someone else. Together, they begin to heal, demonstrating that love can be an incredible force for growth and recovery. The story beautifully illustrates that seeking help through therapy, counseling, or medication is a courageous choice and a vital part of healing.

The characters are written in such a relatable and vulnerable way that you can feel every emotion alongside them. Hallie Bennett has crafted a remarkable lite dark romance that strikes a delicate balance between drama and spice, making it impossible to put down. I find myself eagerly anticipating the next brother's journey as he discovers his own curvy girl in this captivating mafia series!

J’adore la langue française. This book had amazing storylines, made better with the french parts of the book. I can relate to Allie for more than the fact we share a name. French has always been my favorite foreign language. I mean “Reste avec moi, s’il te plait, ma douce. Je t’aime.” -> “Stay with me, please, my sweet. I love you.” Just doesn’t sound the same in English.

After Allie saves Mathias from a botched assassination attempt in Paris, Mathias can’t decide if she did it selflessly or if someone put her up to it. After compensating Allie for saving his life he feels like Allie is a puzzle that needs solving, because who wouldn’t spend $1 Million even after confirming it’s on the up and up? With no strings attached?

Allie is struggling with her anxiety from being the primary caretaker for over a year to not only her lazy roommate, but also her parents and younger brother. After saving Mathias and not spending the money that suddenly appeared in her account. Matthias shows up on her doorstep to then realize that Allie is drowning in her responsibilities and needs someone to take control and get her out of the mess she’s been in her entire life.

So what’s wrong with leaving your entire life behind to randomly move 758 miles to a new state, where you know no one, with someone you barely know? Whispered Desire puts the fears of most curvy girls into words and demonstrates that some people can love you for you. As a Curvy girl myself it spoke to me. I hope it does to you as well. So strap in for the ride of a lifetime.

She has been struggling for a while. Her family uses her and manipulates her. Her roommate once her best friend, has now become dependent on her and refuses to support herself. She is drowning in the demands of others. While on a work trip she instinctively pushes a man out of the way of danger and is shot. He is fascinated with the little curvy woman who saved his life. He doesn’t think anyone could be as innocent as she actually appears to be. Once he realizes that she truly is and how taken advantage she has been, he steps in and decides to claim her. The pressure has been so much on her for so long that the idea of someone else taking care of her and making decisions is freeing. He is a dangerous man, but not to her, to her, he is what are her protector. This is well written with unique characters. There is some really good mental health representation here. Not only from the perspective of the suffer, but also from the partner who recognizes it and how to help. They are extremely attracted to each other and things get steamy, as he take over her mind, body and soul. She needs to submit because it frees her from the anxiety of choice and he craves her submission. There is also an ongoing arc of mafia/family danger that runs through the story and will continue through the series. I thought it was a good first book in the series introducing you to the other characters, but still keeping this couple as the main focus of the story. I look forward to seeing how the rest of the stories in the series play out and getting more updates on this couple as I watch the rest develop.

OMG> this is now my officially fave book by this author, and it is a new series to boot! Just wow. 7 illegitimate sons of powerful men arrive at Blackchapel Manor and are taught ruthlessly a lot of things, like killing so that they can do one thing- get revenge. These 7 became the “Blackchapel Bastards.” They are: Mathias Beaumont, Aleksei & Dmitri Petrov, Luca D’Amora, Jonah Anderson, Hugo Steele, and Rafael Vasquez. They form a brotherhood and become dangerous men who want retribution from their fathers. Conrad is the one who left the Syndicate of their fathers, and wants revenge and trains them. Now adults the men are ready to finish up the first plan, going after Mathias’ father. In Paris, Mathias & Luca get outside and are almost gunned down in a drive by, however, Allison Fields sees the gun and saves Mathias. I cried a lot during this book, Allison is going thru so much and I’m going thru weird stuff in Rl. Mathias wants to know why Allie did it. Things progress and he decides that he can’t stop thinking about her and finds out that she is neck deep in emotional and money problems. So since he is a doer and a thinker, he does something. lol. He is a lot to deal with. Whoa. Seriously, I found myself shaking my head and trying not to laugh in disbelief a lot while reading this book. The book is fun, funny, scary, action packed, steamy, weirdly romantic, etc. I can’t wait to read more about the ‘brothers’ of Blackchapel Manor.

This is the first in the Blackchapel Bastards series about the men who grew up in the Blackchapel Manor, Mathias Beaumont is the CEO. He is known for his single focus on the job at hand, they are closing in on exacting revenge against his father. Everything changes when a unknown woman, jumps in front of him, saving him from being shot.

Allison has never had someone in her corner, not her family or her friend/roommate. When she saves the man, she gets more than she expected, he deposits a million dollars in her account. She does not know if it is some kind of mistake.

Mathias cannot stop thinking about the woman who saved him, he flies to NC to see her. What he finds is someone in need of his help, Allison is barely hanging on emotionally. He makes the decision to take her back to Boston with him, she needs someone to takes care of her.

Looking forward to the next in the series. This story may be triggering for some due to its dark themes, mental health, violence and depression to name a few.

Whispered Desire is Book 1 of the Blackchapel Bastards series. It's a steamy, with a slow-burn vibe, opposites-attract, curvy girl gets her mafia man darkish romance. This book was very, very different from Hallie's other books, but oh, so good. Allison is a curvy caregiver who suffers from anxiety and depression. She has been taken advantage of by those in her life. Mathias is the hunky, morally gray leader of the blackchapel bastards, men who were sired by powerful leaders and then abandoned. The men were all trained to be ruthless mercenaries and long to kill their fathers. Allison literally takes bullets for Matthias, and he becomes obsessed with her. I really loved these characters. Both are gritty, raw, and realistic, suffering with their own demons. There is danger, drama, light kink, and plenty of steam in this emotional roller-coaster before we get our happy ending. I can't wait for the next book in the series. I loved it.

Yes...Please! I have read several books by this author that are more rom com's while I enjoyed them which is why I got this book, this might be my favorite so far. I always love this author's curvy girl characters who get a chance to find HEA with MMC that adore them! This book is labeled mafia-lite but don't let that keep you from starting it if you usually read lighter books or darker books! I feel like this is going to be this author's best series. I was already raving to my book bestie about it. I was telling her I wasn't even done yet, but it was probably my favorite. Mathias has a brotherhood with the "Blackchapel Bastards" even if it's an unconventional family! Allison has a few issues that she's working on when she takes a bullet for Mathias. This one choice changes their lives in ways you couldn't see coming! Mathias's control and attention to detail is just what Allison's chaotic life needs! This is a great start to a series that I know I won't get quick enough!

This was fantastic! I love the whole concept of these books! This sounds like it's going to be an entertaining series. The writing style is great and these characters are likable and I feel empathy towards their situations.

Both were raised very different. Very different. But both experience difficulties.

He had a violent life but that is the one he was born into and he isn't letting it dictate his life. He can makes his own choices and this poor h, I feel like she feels she is trapped. Her friend is terrible, going against the system? Ok. So pay for your own rent, your friend is not rich to take care of the two of you. She isn't starting her own business, keeping things cozy and neat, clean. I love how he steps in. He takes care of everything and gives her something to look forward to. Someone to lean on. Hope for so many things. This was a unique and lovely story! Loved it!

This book is the beginning of a new series that looks very promising. Even though the overarching plot features the Mafia, I didn't feel that it was actually that much darker than the author's usual writing (for which I am grateful). I also don't often enjoy plots that include the Mafia, but I loved this book. The FMC, Allison, is struggling with her mental health and is unable to say no to anyone. Mathias, the MMC, is part of a brotherhood that has been trained to take vengeance on the fathers who abandoned them. They both find something good in their lives when they get together. I must say that the way they meet redefines the term "meet-cute"!  Their romance and the ways they support each other are lovely.  I also enjoyed the humorous cultural references, and I loved the writing style and the secondary characters. Very entertaining!

I was hooked from the start until the very end. This story is about Mathias Beaumont, is the CEO of Blackchapel Bastards, when Mathias, and his brothers were military trained with precision and toughness to stop their fathers from doing more wrong. There was so much action and when he met Allie, he became obsessed with her and he decided that she belonged to him. They went and got her, he was shocked what she was doing. It had been a long time since he had a female in his bed, so he moved her into his bed to cuddle her and take control of her life, she is depressed, and anxiety cose to a breakdown with everyone wanted something from her or making her feel she is responsible for them and now she thinks he wants something like everybody else. It was a slow burn romance and one that may or may not last.

Whispered Desire is suspenseful and a page turning mafia romance. The entire time I was reading this book, I was on the edge of my seat. The story is amazingly written, well balanced and beautifully executed by Hallie Bennett. She continues to showcase what an incredible author she is with each book I’ve read by her so far. The characters of Whispered Desire are well developed and beautifully executed throughout the story. Whispered Desire follows the story of Allison and Mathias. The chemistry between these two characters is absolutely fascinating and undeniably irresistible. I thoroughly enjoyed getting to know both of these characters as well as witnessing their story unfold through the pages of this book. I’m looking forward to reading more phenomenal romances from Hallie Bennett in the future. I would absolutely give this book as a recommendation for anyone who loves reading mafia romances.

Alongside the story of brotherhood of men craving retribution that will continue with each and every book, we will get to read about each Blackchapel orphan and the women that captivates their hearts. This is going to be such a great series. Mathias has been raised and trained for one thing which is revenge. Allison has spent her whole life supporting everyone else with nothing in return to the point of her crumbling mental health. The description of the panic attacks, anxiety, and coping mechanisms are done with such clarity, painting a vivid picture in which the reader sees and feels the depth of the turmoil. The need, caring, understanding, strength and compassion of Mathias is an amazing counterpart which brings about a well written, strong story and a happy ever after you won’t forget. WOW!

This is a darker story and I suggest you read the warnings before starting it. Seven illegitimate sons are sent to the Blackchapel for training leaning how to take revenge on the fathers who put them there. Mathias has become the leader of this group of men. He meets Allison when she jumps in front of him and takes bullets meant for him. He doesn't understand why she would do that but he wants to find out. Allison has always been the one picking up the pieces to her family and friends which causes her to have anxiety. Mathias has a need to take care of Allison which he does very well. Their love story is beautifully written and I want a Mathias for myselt. The author has dealt with anxiety and depression with empathy and care. I loved Mathias and Allison. I loved this well written emotional story.

I am not one to read the mafia trope that much but have loved this author’s other books that I have read. I couldn’t put this book down. I was captivated immediately by the story as well as the characters in this book. This was a page turner as I just wanted to keep reading to see what happened next. I could identify with Allie the main female character in the sense that she is a “fixer” and everyone relies on her to make things right or to help them out. She is craving for someone to see her for who she is and love her. Mathias does this for her in so many ways. I loved how Mathias learned all about Allie and the things she needed to bring her peace and build up her independence. His care of her was just the best. I am going to be on the edge of my seat waiting for the rest of this series to come out!.

Although this is a darker romance than I typically read from this author, I am glad that I did. Whispered Desire by Hallie Bennett is very well-written and enthralling from start to finish. The plot is engaging and well-paced. The characters are written with depth and evolve throughout the story. Allison and Mathias are intriguing individuals and make a surprisingly dynamic couple. They complete one another, giving each other the support each need. This story is a page-tuner from the start. It drew this reader in and made me want to continue reading without putting it down. Whispered Desire: A Curvy Girl Mafia Romance is Book 1 of the Blackchapel Bastards Series. **Please review the Content Notes before reading. The author does a good job of preparing the reader for reaction to possible triggers.

Oh, this story will have your heart pumping and aching at the same time. Allison has been struggling for a while. She has contemplated on more than one occasion what the point is if no one cares about her and her feelings. Matthias is the unofficial leader of a group of men who lead a not-so-shiny life. When a bullet comes flying at Matthias, his life changes because someone stepped in front of him. He's suspicious of Allison and why she would throw her life in front of someone he doesn't know. Allison is about to go on a journey of self-discovery in the hands of Matthias and his brothers. These two will have a hard time trusting one another, but they will find that sometimes the strongest people need someone. As Matthias finds out about Allison's past, he will do anything to keep her safe. Can they keep each other safe when it really matters?

Mathias and Allie’s story is one that I didn’t want to put down. Sleep called when I was 50% in. Woke at 4am the next day and binge read til the end.
The prologue is pretty intense. Stick with it. Story starts with Allie, who has mental health issues (mainly due to never feeling wanted, she has spent her life, so far, doing all she can to get her family and friend to care for her), going to Paris for work, and finds herself taking a bullet when she jumps in front of Mathias. He can’t believe a stranger would do such a thing! He ends up taking her away from the toxic people who are not giving her what she needs.
Ok, so moving on to the ‘feels’ I got as I read this book, emotional, fear, swooning over how much care he takes of Allie, the patience he has and eventually the passion that is written so well.
Some violence, lots of care given and received and an ending that is perfect.

Hallie has jumped into the subgenre of mafia romance. First off, let me say if you have not read mafia romance and want to dip you toes into it, try this book. It is, like Hallie states, a “cozy mafia” book or what I call mafia-lite. There are not a lot of hard-hitting themes you see in hardcore mafia stories. That being said, there are warnings for you to look at and decide. Allison is a girl with some issues. I cannot relate but can share her empathy. Do we all want a Matthias taking care of us? Yes, we do. I am so happy with Hallie for writing a story where the man understands and takes care of someone out of sheer love with no putting down or disregarding her thoughts and feelings.

I cannot wait for the other brothers’ stories in this series.

An amazing start to this series called Blackchapel Bastards. This is the story of Mathias and his brothers who grew up in Blackchapel surrounded by their father's abandonment. They are all out for revenge and will stop at nothing to achieve this. Allie also has her own issues; she is the caretaker for everyone but herself. She has been struggling, then she goes and does one reckless decision changes her life, and a ruthless CEO Mathias decides to claim her as his own. This is their story. I am looking forward to reading the next installment.
The story will hold your attention all the way through. The story does have triggers. The characters fit well together.

The first book in the new series Blackchapel Bastards series. This a new writing style for Hallie Bennett and I'm here for it. Darker than her normal writings with a Mafia lite theme. I love Allie with how relatable she is. Allie suffers from anxiety and a people pleaser which leads to people who are suppose to care for her takes advantage. Mathias is one of 7 brothers (not by blood) who leads the Blackchapel Bastards. He is dangerous and not known for his feelings. Allie and Mathias might be opposites but they are perfect for each other. Cannot wait for the other brothers stories since I'm so invested in them. Great start to the series. 5 stars !!.

An intriguing start to a new series that for me was a lite mafia read. It does have a a content warning that should be heeded. Mathias is one of the products of Blackchapel and revenge on those who abandoned them is their goal. A young woman who sacrifices herself to save him becomes a nagging puzzle to solve. Allison deals with life draining relationships that threatens her challenging mental heath. Her life changes when she wakes to a man shrouded in darkness. I was glad to see mental health portrayed in a way that love doesn’t “magically” cure. It was fascinating watching as two people broken in different ways found solace in each other. I will be interested to see where the series takes me.
