I fell in love with that gorgeous cover, and the contemporary romance influenced by Jane Austen kept me happily engaged. The clever concept of using five of Jane's characters (Elinor, Elizabeth, Anne, Emma, and Catherine) as sisters attending a modern wedding gave me great joy as this beautifully written tale unfolded. Highly recommended for Janeites longing for a unique Austen variation or romance fans who adore contemporary HEAs with a literary twist.

Loved loved loved this sweet love letter to Jane Austen!

Everything about this story was charming. I loved imagining Jane Austen's heroines (Elinor, Elizabeth, Emma, Anne, and Catherine) as sisters, with Fanny as their cousin. It was sweet to see the sister relationships and to watch the story within a story version of each major novel play out with the backdrop of Fanny and Edmund's wedding setting the scene.

As an eldest daughter, I saw a bit *too* much of myself in eldest daughter Elinor. It was like looking into a mirror of bossiness.

The only unbelievable part of the story is imagining Edmund Bertram with so many friends. (Ha!)

This is such a great debut novel and an excellent ode to Jane.

HUGE thanks to the author for offering an advanced copy for me to read. I couldn't say yes fast enough. The Austen Sisters is available 4/9/25.

A story of the Austen sisters. Each sister is inspired by a Jane Austen character and they are attending their cousin Fanny’s wedding at Mansfield Park Resort! All the little connections to her books make this a really cute book for all Jane Austen fans who enjoy retellings!

I enjoyed this book so much! It was so fun to see all the characters based on the books of Jane Austen. I didn’t want it to end!

What classic characters from literature would you like to see in a modern adventure?

The five Austen sisters; Elinor, Elizabeth, Emma, Anne, and Catherine were orphans at a young age. Elinor, as the only legal adult, put her own dreams aside to help raise her sisters. Now years later, she is hoping that she will have another chance at her own dreams. She gathers together with her sisters at their cousin Fanny’s wedding at Mansfield Park resort. Will the sisters each find their own happiness?

My thoughts on this novel:
• I loved how each Austen heroine was true to the original character but modernized to fit in today’s society. For example, Emma has started a data app and is a social media influencer. This is very true to her original character.

• I also enjoyed that many other Austen favorite characters popped up into the story.

• I liked the characters, storyline, and sweet romance. I would love to see future books set in the world maybe each featuring one of the sisters.

• This is a perfect book to read to celebrate Jane Austen’s 250th birthday.

• This was a great debut book for author Dee Blankenship. I have enjoyed @dees.reads on Instagram for the past few years and enjoy participating in her Classic Buddy reads.

• I would label this book as a rom com, slow burn romance, and mostly clean read (a character is caught in the act with a lady in the library).

• Each sister has a romance that was a mini version of her classic story and it worked. For example, Anne refused her engagement to Wentworth years ago due to pressure from others before he went into the military. Now he’s back at this wedding and a captain. Can old wounds be healed?

• This could be a standalone novel that is a cute rom com on its own, but it would be the most fun for someone who has read all six Austen novels.

• I love the beautiful cover of this novel and I also received a cute bookmark as well!

Overall, The Austen Sisters by Dee Blankenship is a cute romantic comedy and a love letter to Jane Austen and her six classic novels. I highly recommend it to all lovers of Jane Austen!

"No matter how many ways she had dreamed of her wedding day, she never imagined it would be this beautiful. But in her dreams, it was always Edmund waiting for her at the altar. It had always been Edmund."

I really enjoyed this adorable, sweet, ode to Jane Austen, where five Austen heroines (Elinor, Elizabeth, Anne, Emma, and Catherine) are re-imagined as modern day sisters and bridesmaids in their cousin Fanny's wedding. The luxury resort setting is divine. The Austen Easter Eggs fly fast and furiously. The modern characterizations of each Austen woman is true to the original character's sense and sensibilities, pride and prejudices. They each have their strengths and their flaws and the sisterly relationships are well thought out and earnestly felt.

It did start out a little slow with the setting up of each storyline, but by the middle of the book, I was quickly turning pages and delighting in the nods to Austen as we raced to our everyone gets a happy ending, ending. I also felt like I didn't really know Edmund at all, but as he is the dullest of all Austen heroes, I kind of assume that was intended.

My favorite couple are Catherine and Henry, who are also my favorite couple in the original Northanger Abbey. I loved their haunted hotel room date and botched carriage ride. And who doesn't want to punch John Thorpe in the face???? Go, Catherine, go!

I don't want to say you have to have read all of Austen to truly enjoy this book, it could be just a fun, escapist story of sisters at a fancy wedding. But if you have read all of Jane Austen, and seen all the film adaptations, and consider yourself a Janeite in any way, you will absolutely ADORE this book.

Devoured this in three days.

The author perfectly translated Austen's characters into the modern day. Elizabeth Bennet is one of the most iconic figures of literature, but that doesn't mean that all adaptations get her right. Blankenship's Lizzy is instantly recognizable. Northanger Abbey (my fave) is often forgotten among fans, but here again the author proves her expertise with Catherine and Henry. One of my favourite scenes was him posing for a picture. Such a goofy Henry Tilney thing to do.

The setting was so well done that I can see this being turned into a movie. The narrative was sectioned into all the days leading up to the wedding, and the various activities were the perfect catalyst for the relationships to develop.

My only criticism is that this was too short! I could have been with these lovely characters for a good while yet. I wish we had gotten a little more time with the Persuasion storyline.

I want to encourage everyone to pick up this book. There are a lot of Jane Austen retellings out there, and it can be hard to find one that's worth it. The Austen Sisters was clearly written by someone who is intimately familiar with the subject matter. Plus, it's just good clean fun. A delight to read.

I was honored to be asked to review "The Austen Sisters" by debut author Dee Blankenship. I have followed her book account on Instagram, @dees.reads, for several years, and I know she is an Austen aficionado and a general lover of classic books. "The Austen Sisters" has a great concept - it is a contemporary retelling where the six Austen heroines are 5 sisters + 1 cousin all gathered together for a family wedding. Reader, I had a lot of fun with this book. It really was a joyful romp for an Austenite.

Premise (from Goodreads):

In this contemporary reimagining of Jane Austen’s beloved novels, five sisters, each embodying the spirit of Austen’s heroines, gather at the luxurious Mansfield Park Resort for their cousin Fanny’s wedding.

As the festivities unfold, tensions rise, misunderstandings abound, old flames reignite, and the sisters find themselves swept up in a whirlwind of romance that feels strangely familiar. After all, love, even in the modern day, still follows the timeless wisdom of Austen’s pen.

Full of sparkling wit, slow-burn tension, and heartwarming romance, The Austen Sisters is the perfect escape for Jane Austen lovers, rom-com fans, and anyone who believes in happily ever afters.

This book is absolutely full of clever parallels and delightful Easter eggs for mega-Austen fans, starting with the fact that Fanny is the cousin instead of one of the sisters. Poor Fanny. She just does not have main character energy. 😅

Some other things that really tickled me:

-Emma being a social media star who has started a dating app
-Catherine as the youngest sister - naive and eager and obsessed with the Twilight book series
-Darcy being the scion of a big publishing house led by the tyrannical publishing director Catherine De Burgh
-Caroline Bingley being the snooty author of the book "The Accomplished Woman" (😂)
-The groomsmen are all the "bad boys" of Austen: Willoughby, Wickham, John Thorpe, Frank Churchill, and William Elliot.
-Frank Churchill being unavailable for a game of golf because he went off to get a haircut (Deep cut, y'all. I love it.)

And there are so many more. I could go on and on, but I wouldn't want to ruin it for the reader. Each new appearance/reference/correlation had me smiling. And they are all integrated really neatly into the story. It doesn't feel heavy-handed or awkward at all.

"The Austen Sisters" is also fun because you get five romances (six if you count Fanny's, which she recounts briefly). It is impressive that Blankenship fits all of them tidily into a ~250-page book without it feeling rushed. My favorite romance storylines in "The Austen Sisters" were the ones for Elizabeth and Catherine, which actually matches my OG Austen novel preferences pretty closely ("Pride and Prejudice" and "Northanger Abbey")!

This book really was a vacation for my brain. Blankenship's prose is very readable, and it is clear to me that she knows the original books inside and out; she definitely kept the spirit of Austen throughout. I think "The Austen Sisters" would be enjoyable for any reader, but it is especially a treat for those who have read all six of Austen's finished novels multiple times, like me. So basically, go read all of Austen's novels, and then read "The Austen Sisters" when you are feeling bereft at the lack of more Jane. It is like a cherry on top.

**I received a complimentary copy of this book in exchange for an honest review, and this is my very genuine response to this sweet book.**

I was so enthralled with this ode to Jane Austen and her loveable heroines. As a Jane Austen fan, I was thoroughly tickled with these updated (deelightful) versions of Jane's characters. The author truly captured the essence of each sister, and all the secondary characters were such a hoot. My familiarity with Jane Austen's books definitely enhanced my experience. However, I believe the book would be a joy to read for anyone!

The cover, binding, font, page quality (pretty crispy white paper!), and overall design is lovely! I love the white and mint green with the burgundy. From her picture, the author seems like a person I would genuinely enjoy knowing!

The story itself: The author takes all the major Austen heroines and puts them in one family (modern day) attending their cousin Fanny's wedding, also attended by various other Austen characters. What I really wanted for this book was my favorite characters living out their stories in a different world - similar yet different enough to be interesting. (I felt like this was really only achieved with Anne, and maybe Elizabeth.) Instead it felt a bit like the point of the book was ultimately not to retell Jane Austen stories in the modern day, but to create a narrative with as many Jane Austen references as possible. (Ex. Frank Churchill disappears to have his haircut. Elizabeth is fond of walking. Henry asks Catherine about vampires and journaling. Emma insults Ms. Bates. Elizabeth works for Charlotte Lucas Publishing which has no money and few prospects.) Are these witty and clever things to include? Not really, they're pretty tongue-in-cheek... which could still be fun! But when you go to read it, just be aware that that's the setup. It's more like spoof, less like Austen. (Another little thing... In my mind, Jane Austen heroines are above swearing. But that's just me! Each to their own retelling.)

Over all, I enjoyed Anne the best, and the physical book itself is beautiful! Perhaps the author achieved her goal, because now I want to go reread Persuasion. :)

Very interesting modern mash up of all Austen’s heroines. I appreciated that it didn’t try to retell all six stories; it read more like a Doctor Who episode where everything feels a little upside down but in a fun way. The heroines felt like caricatures of Austen’s; some were more spot on than others. I would guess the writer and I see some of Austen’s heroines and plots very differently.

The novel unfortunately contained a fair amount of profanity. I wasn’t quite sure whether the amount of cameos was charming or overwhelming (so many characters pop up but have no purpose to the plot). Ultimately, I would have preferred a bit more depth but was entertained. Not sure I’d reread; time will tell.

Come along with me to Mansfield Park to attend cousin Fanny’s wedding to Edmund. The Austen sisters, all five of them, will be joining us. Let the fun begin!

The wedding in this delightful book takes place on June 14, 2025, which is today, the day that I finished reading it. What a fun coincidence!

In this novel, each of the Austen sisters represented a Jane Austen heroine in wonderfully imaginative ways. The sisters faced disagreements and disappointments with underlying support and real love for each other.

While reading this book, you will be treated to endearing characters, multiple romances, much humor, entertaining dialogue and enjoyable storytelling.

I highly recommend this most enjoyable book!

I saw this book at my local Barnes and Nobles and was intrigued. It is written by a local author, has a beautiful cover, and it has Jane Austen woven through it. This is a fabulous book. I loved all of the characters from the sisters to others that appear in Austen's books.

Time to gush 🥰

I gobbled up The Austen Sisters by @dees.reads in one sitting one lovely Sunday afternoon.

I absolutely adored this delightful modern retelling which imagines five of Jane Austen’s heroines as sisters.

All grown up and living in different states, Elinor, Lizzy, Anne, Emma and Catherine are meeting for a weekend at their cousin Fanny’s wedding at the luxurious Mansfield Park Hotel.

With each chapter told from a different sister’s POV the story zips along weaving five different romances into one charming story.

While this book is an absolute treat for Austen fans it also has Little Women vibes as it explores the dynamics between grown sisters, who have lots of love but don’t always understand each other’s choices.

The story is masterfully told so that even though each couple only gets a handful of chapters I was invested in each story and felt all the swoony moments.

Also, watching Elinor and Anne mourn lost relationships while their sisters start new ones added poignancy. (Never fear each sister has her own happy ending. 🩷)

I would recommend this book to those who love Jane Austen and anyone who loves a heartwarming love story. All the stars

3.5 stars: A cute modern day tale involving various Jane Austen characters. At first I was a bit put off by the use of all the original names of the Austen characters, but the more I read, the more grateful I was that the author used the same names so I could keep them all straight since they were from three separate Jane Austen books. Perhaps my favorite part was the Austen quote at the end. “My characters shall have, after a little trouble, all that they desire.”

*Note: I caught several editing errors in the book that were a little distracting.

Such a cute, lighthearted, and easy read. A modern mash-up of 5 of Jane Austen’s famous works. My favorite moments were those where I recognized iconic moments from Austen’s books occurring in a modern fashion: Emma insulting Miss Bates, and the gruff interactions between Elizabeth and Mr. Darcy. The descriptions of the scenery and outfits in this book will make the reader feel like they are watching a romcom. Overall, a feel-good and happy read that will lift your spirits.

This is a fun updating of the romantic dilemmas facing Austen heroines. You'll enjoy seeing secondary but memorable characters updated for 21st century US,! I would like to see a sequel that tells us more about the unfolding of a few of the relationships.....

Such a fun modern-day re-telling! The author was very good at tying in all the stories from not just one but three books! I would have liked to see Elizabeth and Darcy's story a bit more, but other than that it was a great book!
