An absolutely amazing read!! I was immediately intrigued by the book after reading the synopsis and the only word I could think of to describe such book is “wonderful!” This Sci-Fi and Alice in Wonderland crossover will leave you wanting more of Noah and Celeste’s conversations and building friendship to (hopefully) relationship and learning more of Celeste’s world along with Noah and his cousin and fiancé!! A huge thank you to the wonderful Angela Funk for allowing me to be an ARC reader (for the first time)!!

The World Beyond the Horizon is such a delightful sci-fi retelling of Alice in Wonderland with witty banter, realistic characters, and beautiful descriptions of physics that only an Alice in Wonderland retelling could have.

The book follows four characters on an adventure to save both of their planets from colliding.

Noah, who recently lost his mother two months ago, is mourning and has lost his spark in life. The two were very close but kept other family at a distance. Katalina, Noah's distant cousin, contacts Noah to invite him to lunch on his mother's birthday.

Hesitantly, he accepts Katalina and her fiancé's invitation when they meet Celeste. The blue-haired girl is out of place in how she dresses and runs through the memorial grounds.

Celeste tells the trio that she's from another planet, and they have two months before both are destroyed by colliding with each other.

Then, when the out-of-place girl extends a hand for them to join her in her adventure to save both planets, they follow her to The End, an off-limits area of the square-shaped planet Sundar. That's where it was slowly breaking down and floating away.

In all, the prose is delightful and akin to a Disney movie. I feel like this could be an animated series because of how vividly I could see all of the trippy, zero-gravity imagery. The banter between the four protagonists reminds me of Avatar the Last Airbender in its charming and witty way.

Truly, where this sci-fi rom-com shines is in its characters and storytelling. Beautiful imagery and descriptive writing made The World Beyond the Horizon a unique and utterly delightful experience, and I highly recommend reading it.

3.5 ⭐️

Angela Funk quite literally paints a world of a wide array of hues, on an entirely different planet filled with creatures of the deep, sirens, shifters, dragons, and more!! In this heartfelt adventure, MMC Noah attempts to meet his cousin and her fiancé for dinner shortly after his mother’s passing only to be introduced to bubbly Celeste who brings them on a journey to find a way to prevent their 2 planets from colliding.

What I Liked:
In regards to world building, I was in awe of the level of detail in beautiful imagery and descriptive writing used throughout this book. I did feel that there was some very reflective content revolving around grief and loss as well as anxiety and depression - with coping and overcoming it, which was emotionally relatable and thought provoking.

What I Disliked:
At times I felt the plot was slow and the conversations between characters dragged on. There were also a lot of new creatures I had never heard of, which I felt was creative and fun, but at the same time, sometimes I had no idea what was going on (referring to the scene with the derithia). Some parts, I was a bit confused and lost at times with the pockets of randomness, but I guess that’s what makes it an Alice in Wonderland re-telling?

Overall, it was an enjoyable read, and am intrigued to know how it ends in the next book. Thank you so much to Angela Funk for providing me the opportunity to read this ARC!

I really enjoyed this story. As an Alice in Wonderland reimagining/retelling, the writing was done very well to give off the Wonderland vibe. There would be points I had to reread a sentence or two to make sure I had read it properly. Not because it was done poorly, but because this is Wonderland baby. Even with that in mind, the way the story handled grief felt very relatable and real to me. Celeste and Noah's journey may be hard for someone who has recently lost someone, but their journey is also one of healing and, if not acceptance, acknowledgment of how they feel. I devoured this story and adored the world and it's characters. My biggest hope for the next book is that we get to see Henry 🩵

This was another ARC read in a genre I'm not sure I would normally pick up but the premise intrigued me.

POV: third person limited
POV Character: Noah
Verb Tense: Past, I think - can't remember
Triggers: talk of su1c1de, mental health rep/issues

Initially I picked this up thinking it would be science-fantasy and have fantasy elements to keep me engaged, but I think it falls more in the science-fiction realm, which isn't usually my cup of tea. So I'm keeping that in mind as I review the book because it will, naturally, color my opinions.

This book has the premise that Noah is living on a flat planet with a sign at the end of the world stating to stay back and not to jump off because, obviously, you'll die. It's quite weird to me, but hey, that's science-fiction. Noah recently buried his mother after her successful su1c1de and struggles now with the knowledge his interactions with her all his life might not have been as honest as he always believed. He never knew her struggle with her mental health and now experiences lots of questions about what she felt and what drove her to this choice. At the same time, he's struggling to find a job and simply make ends meet in a small apartment on the other side of a mountain from the location where a majority of people work.

His cousin calls him up and asks him to meet her for dinner and suggests they meet at his mother's grave...on her birthday...only a month after her burial. Noah's grief and anger are rather understandable as he makes his way there to meet with one of the only extended relatives who's made any effort (however small) to reach out to him after an estrangement. When he arrives, he winds up waiting a while and is caught by the sight of a wildly dressed young woman racing through the cemetery. When he calls out to her, she stops to tell him she's trying to prevent their two worlds from colliding in a black hole that's currently sucking both planets (from alternate dimensions) into its maws of death and will demolish her planet.

And this is how we meet Celeste. She's a vibrant, vivacious character from a square planet somewhere else in the universe who's trying to finish her late brother's work as a researcher and discover the key to saving their planets. She tells Noah this unbelievable story, and somehow he decides to go along with her on her journey back to her planet. About the time they head off, his cousin arrives with her fiancé, and they get drawn into this adventure as well.

Jumping off the edge of his planet while holding hands together, they find themselves in the most ridiculous planet ever where Celeste lives. I say ridiculous because this book is an homage to Alice in Wonderland with a gender-bent Alice. I struggle to define what role Celeste plays (the white rabbit, the mad hatter? Not sure), but Noah is the gender-bent Alice suffering deeply from mental health woes and struggling with his mother's recent death. The cousin and her fiancé are an interesting touch, and I'm not entirely sure how they fit into a retelling, but they add some extra color to the cast of characters.

I'm not sure I'm the best fit for this book.

I absolutely adore Alice in Wonderland, even as an adult. It's refreshing and delightfully silly and full of nonsense, and the nonsensical lack of a plot, even as Alice makes her way through Wonderland is still a fun read.

This fell a bit flat for me in comparison. Perhaps it was too many impossible things trying to draw together into a more cohesive plot. Perhaps it was the heavy themes sprinkled throughout that took away from the delight of exploring the colorful world Celeste lives in and the unusual creatures and odd moving landmasses. There was an odd juxtaposition of mental health issues against pure ridiculous world building and the regular use of cursing from Mark (the fiancé) which just generally turned me off and made it impossible for me to read this book quickly. It felt like a slog to get through it, and I'm sad to say it was not one of my favorites.

Perhaps the next book will bring it together a bit more, but I'm not sure I want to read it.

This might be for you if you like save-the-world quests in sci-fi lands of odd creatures and unique features.

"But that's the thing about life-you tend to end up where you need to be without knowing how you got there."- The World Beyond the Horizon.

In The World Beyond the Horizon, Angela Funk crafts a mesmerizing tale that invites readers to journey alongside Noah and Celeste, two souls drawn together by fate and a shared yearning for adventure. Set against the backdrop of breathtaking landscapes and vibrant colors, the story explores themes of love, courage, and self-discovery.

Noah, a person doubting life, by chance happens to see a beautiful woman running past him in the grave spot of his mother while waiting for a cousin who he has never met but wants to meet him while Celeste, a vibrant warm soul, seeks to save both planets from colliding in two months and so happens to see a sad man by himself who could keep her company. Their paths intertwine when they meet, she offered to help save the world with a stranger, he took it and by chance that offer extended to his cousin and her fiancé, sparking an instant connection that blossoms into a deep, transformative relationship; Not only romantically but platonically. As they embark on a quest to explore hidden rulers of the elements and face their personal fears, readers are treated to a rich tapestry of experiences that reveal both the joys and challenges of pursuing one’s dreams.

Funk’s descriptive prose brings each destination to life, from the world jumping, to the Merpeople and aspects from their culture, the oil tapestry that was Celestes world. The chemistry between Noah and Celeste is palpable, and their dialogues are laced with humor and vulnerability, making their journey not just a physical exploration, but an emotional one as well.

What resonated with me most was how Noah and Celeste’s adventures mirror the struggles we all face in finding our own paths. Their moments of doubt and discovery reminded me of my own journey of stepping out of my comfort zone. Mark was a character who you would see so much change, from his brooding character in the beginning to have his moments with Noah and his love for Katalina was swoon worthy—many of us have moments that test our confidence and resolve like Mark trying to gain a positive attitude.

Overall, The World Beyond the Horizon is a captivating blend of adventure and introspection that will leave readers inspired to seek out their own horizons. With its rich character development and heartfelt storytelling, I would give this book 4.5 stars. It’s a beautiful reminder that the world is full of possibilities, and sometimes, the greatest journey we can embark on is the one that leads us to understand ourselves better. This book is a treasure for anyone yearning for adventure and connection. I cannot wait read book two and see how the Ruler of the sky will favor Noah?

CW: loss of family, themes of anxiety, depression, and trauma, references to su!cide and @buse

Thank you to the author for allowing me to be a part of the ARC team! “The World Beyond the Horizon” is available now!

It’s giving cozy sci-fi with a surprisingly deep look into the grief that follows losing someone close to you.

Noah’s world is crumbling. Not just personally, though the loss of his mother has left him emotionally adrift and drowning. The world is literally crumbling away at the edges. When a strange woman informs him that she’s from another world and the two are set to collide in a black hole, destroying her world, Noah’s left with the choice to help her or continue to let the world pass him by.

Somehow this book was both adorable and sad (in the best way). The world of Fortun is magical, evoking both Wonderland and Wonka’s chocolate factory in its forthright absurdity. Sundar reminds me more of our world, with the notable exception of being both flat and falling apart at the edges. Think Shel Silverstein’s “Where the Sidewalk Ends.” I love them both immensely, and the pure insanity of the whole situation made the entire book a delightful surprise on every page.

Even the characters are ridiculous in hilarious ways. Noah is chronically depressed (and sometimes depressing), while Celeste is his complete opposite. Everything from her mouth is pure gold, and I adore her. How each responds to their personal losses, and how they try to help each other cope with them, is indescribably beautiful. Pack tissues for this one; you’re going to need them. But all of the heart and feels is wonderfully balanced by the completely unhinged comedy delivered like this is all completely normal. It makes the book incredibly easy to read without feeling inane.

The plot, like the world and the characters, is wildly out there, but in a way that still makes perfect sense. It’s an easy, palatable book that still lets you feel like you accomplished something by the end of it. The pacing is perfect, feeling both breakneck and reasonable. At its core, it’s a book of dualities, and both sides are delivered with excellence and levity.

I adored this book. It was incredibly fun to read, and I would 10000% read it again. If you’re looking for a hardcore sci-fi, with all the bells and whistles and shiny chrome, this isn’t the one. But if you’re looking for a cozy, whimsical story that somehow embodies both science fiction and fantasy with just the right amount of emotion, then this is definitely it. Go into this one expecting fun and prepared to work through some emotions. 10/10; everyone should read it.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ FIVE OUT OF FIVE STARS!!

A special thanks to Angela Funk for allowing me the opportunity to ARC review this book for her.

Ready for a wild ride? *"The World Beyond the Horizon"* by Angela Funk is a quirky, out-of-this-world retelling of *Alice in Wonderland*. Join Noah and Celeste as they dive headfirst into a madcap wonderland adventure, trying to stop their planets from a cosmic crash! Expect a delightful mashup of sci-fi, rom-com vibes, and a colorful cast of humans, merpeople, dragons, and beyond! Oh, and it’s not just fun and games—it also explores deeper themes like grief and anxiety with heart and humor! Buckle up!

From the get-go, I *knew* this book would totally steal my heart. The romances? Utterly swoon-worthy and wholesome, just like the characters themselves! Our hero, Noah, is still grappling with the recent loss of his mother (off-page, but it hits hard). Grief is a tough beast, and watching Noah navigate that journey is both heart-wrenching and inspiring (spoiler: he pulls through!). Enter Celeste, and Noah's moodiness goes into full overdrive—he’s all broody, mopey, and drowning in negativity. But oh boy, does their story take some twists!

Celeste is a total ball of sunshine, the perfect foil to Noah’s moody brooding, and she’s the one who drags him into the adventure of a lifetime! Seriously, I am OBSESSED with her! She’s adorable, endlessly positive, and drops wisdom bombs left and right. Then there’s fiancés Mark and Katalina (Noah’s cousin), who jump into the chaos right along with them. From the moment they show up, you can’t help but cheer for them! Katalina is super excited to bond with her cousin, while Mark? Well, he’d rather be off playing kickball with the boys, but honestly, his grumpy attitude is hilarious.

This book is packed with love, heartbreak, life lessons, and non-stop adventure. If you’re a fan of sci-fi/fantasy, surrealism, magical realism, or fluffy romance—get ready, this one’s got your name written all over it!

Thank you Angela Funk for the opportunity to read and review this ARC!

I wanted to love this book so badly because I think the premise is really creative and engaging. That being said, there were a couple things that fell flat for me that were hard to ignore.

Pros:
- I loved the worldbuilding and the descriptions of the environment and characters! It was a very vivid picture in my mind and it kind of reminded me of A Wrinkle in Time (going off on an adventure to other planets to save the world) and the TV show Bee and Puppycat (more so visually rather than narratively).
- The anxiety, depression, and grief representation felt pretty spot on and was handled authentically and realistically. I think the author did a better job of showing this than telling it compared to some other elements of the story.
- Overall feel-good vibes. Escaping to this world felt fun!

Cons:
- I'm not sure if this was intentional, but the way the characters were written (both introspection of the MC as well as dialogue between characters) felt more like YA prose. This wouldn't really be an issue except I haven't seen this labeled as YA? There is an element of whimsy that makes the tone feel lighter and the characters feel younger, but there were moments that felt overly naive or a bit too on the nose. In that vein, there was a bit too much telling and not enough showing when it came to characters' emotions.
- The plot felt a bit too fast paced at times. So much happens in this book, and there isn't much time for reflection on any of world-building plot points, especially considering they're on a completely new world where physics and logic are completely different than what they're used to. Certain things are taken for granted as truth, while they get really caught up on other elements of the new world, seemingly at random without rhyme or reason. I understand you have to move the plot along and can't stop at every novelty in an Alice in Wonderland-type world, but it didn't feel consistent, and it broke my immersion several times.

The World Beyond the Horizon is a fun sci-fi romance adventure following Noah, Celeste, Katalina, and Mark as they try to figure out how to stop their world from being destroyed in a collision with another planet. After meeting easy going, and a bit wild Celeste who is from another planet, Noah immediately decides to follow her to her home planet to help her save both their planets. The cousin Noah just reconnects with and her fiance also decide to follow along on this adventure.

So, as far as the world(s) this is set in, they are beyond cool. Sundar, where the team starts, is flat, crumbling, and very like ours: mundane and kind of boring. It read as gray or just mundane to me generally. Then they jump to Fortun which is very Wonderland coded and it is just an explosion of colors, creatures, and VIBES. The world is painted, the hills are weird, there are mythical creatures (that are myths to even three of the characters). There is so much cool world building in this book that I loved so much. I will say, almost none of it is explained. Celeste, who is from the planet, has a very “well this is just how it is” approach to it all, no matter how weird it all is. This is a very ‘hand wave’ sci-fi / fantasy book so if you like an explained world building system this will not be for you. For example, there is a district of the city that's just fish. They aren’t awake or anything, I’m not sure if they are holograms or if they were just fish, and it was very neat but not explained. I like a low explanation world build, but even I struggled with this.

Plot wise, I found the beginning of this book really slow to get going. For me it felt like nothing was really happening until like 50% through. There were a lot of atmospheric things, world building, and character work but not a ton of plot happened even though they talked a lot about how important it was for them to get to everything. Once they finally got going, it was exciting and I enjoyed the adventure vibe the story had but it didn’t go on for very long before the book ended and picks up in book two. So, just a bit slow to get going for me.

Characters; I really liked Celeste. She is very fun, kind of a weirdo, and she really fits the Wonderland vibe. She just does whatever she wants and tells you nothing. I also really like her handle on her grief around her brother and how much she helps Noah through his grief throughout, but especially towards the very end of the book. Noah is a bit challenging. I think he portrays grief very well, and I love when authors write the anger side of grief. I think it's missed a lot. He is thick in his sadness and anger and I think that is done well. My issue with him is that for like 50% of this book he is only talking or thinking about either Celeste, Katalina, or his mother. It just felt like he should be a little focused on like the planets exploding, and of like the dragons, etc. Finally, for Katalina and Mark I honestly don’t get the point of them. I don’t really know why they came along at all. They consistently cause drama, interrupt the relationship development between Celeste and Noah, and Mark’s anger and issues and just… UGH. I also don’t love their relationship which fluctuates between weird awkwardness, Mark’s anger, and intense PDA sometimes which feels out of nowhere. In short I would rather them just not be in this book, I think I generally would have liked this book better without them in it.

In short. I had some issues with this book but all and all this is a sweet book where two young folk fall in love and deal with intense grief together while trying to stop their worlds from colliding.

First of all, thank you to the author, Angela Funk for this ARC! It was really cool to get a chance to read the book, and the whimsy and quirks felt very magical.

The premise of this book was super interesting and I'm a sucker for anything Wonderland based.
One of the biggest draws of this book was actually the way the description introduced a dynamic range of characters. It made me wonder how their personalities and feelings (and for Noah, feelings were a huge part of his character) would play into the plot. Overall, it was a very whimsical book. Funk's worldbuilding and descriptors are beautiful, and her creativity goes really far into making me believe that the characters are transported into a Wonderland.

That being said, I have to say that although the book had a lot of whimsy and interesting quirks, it felt a bit juvenile. There was a lot of telling, not showing, and while the characters had the potential to be dynamic, they just fell flat for me. They're characterized one way, but then act completely out of character for no reason in some parts. Besides the characters feeling a bit disjointed, the plot also felt disconnected. It would hop from a deep emotional moment between characters to the next plot point, and sometimes, it felt like scenes were added just because. The pacing was sometimes too slow and too fast and it made for a very inconsistent reading experience.

All in all, it was a cool book with a cool premise, but because of the inconsistencies in both the plot and characters, and the juvenile feeling of the writing, it felt like a chore to get through. To be honest, if you picked up the book with the intention to just read and have some fun, it has a lot of potential, but as a whole, it's not the type of book I'd want to re-read or a series I'd be too invested in continuing.

Tropes/What to Expect

wholesome rom-com energy
Mythical creatures like mermaids & dragons
mental health rep / loss
humor
fun action adventure
whimsical world-building

retelling of Alice in Wonderland
tear-jerking moments

Angela Funk has created worlds that shatter any concept of our reality. Each world has their own rules, creatures, and customs which gives Noah, Celeste, Katalina, and Mark quite the adventure. This book is an Alice in Wonderland re-telling that has an MMC Noah who is struggling with grief over a lost loved one and attempts to build a relationship with distant relatives. Things take a turn in this story when a dinner invitation evolves into a planet saving adventure with the FMC Celeste.

I enjoyed the descriptive nature of the world building as well as the imagery it painted. I enjoyed how Angela tackled grief and anxiety and depression. That was originally what drew me to this book.

I felt that it was potentially two plots in one where both were co-existing in the same book - Noah trying to build a relationship with a relative and then the romance/adventure aspect with Celeste. Some parts I was a bit confused and lost at times but I chalked it up to the quirkiness of the sci-fi Alice in Wonderland retelling aspect!

I couldn't really connect with the weirdness of the story but I found relatability in the grief aspect. By the end of the book, I found myself enjoying the banter and journey of these characters!

I am definitely interested to know how it ends in the next book!

I was lucky enough to be given a copy of this book. Thank you so much to Angela Funk for providing me the opportunity to read this book!

The World Beyond the Horizon Review 🌍✨🐇

Okeee, this book? ABSOLUTELY crazyyy in the best way. Imagine if Alice in Wonderland took a sharp left into outer space, threw in a touch of romance, a dash of sarcasm, and an impending cosmic apocalypse. Yeah…. That’s what we’re working with here. 🚀💫

So we’ve got Noah a grieving guy just trying to visit his mom’s grave who suddenly gets told oh hey, your planet is about to smash into another one. And who tells him this? Celeste, the whimsical, mysterious, probably too calm for someone whose planet is in danger girl he just met. Ohhhh and she wants his help to stop it. No pressure. 🌀

Tropes to obsess over:
🐰 Down the Rabbit Hole (But make it sci-fi. Noah goes from “normal dude” to “WTF is happening?!” real quick.)
👩‍❤️‍👨 Opposites Attract (Celeste: quirky space girl. Noah: sarcastic realist. The banter? GOLD.)
🚨 Save the World (Or, you know, the planets. Casual.)
👀 Long-Lost Family Secrets (Wait, why is Noah’s cousin involved? And her fiancé?? What’s their deal?!)
💘 Slow-Burn Romance (The tension between Noah and Celeste will have you yelling, JUST KISS ALREADY! 🥹)

This book is such a wild ride. It’s got magical Wonderland vibes but with futuristic sci-fi twists think talking creatures, surreal landscapes, and gadgets straight out of a dream. The pacing? Non-stop. One minute they’re figuring out cosmic mechanics, the next they’re dodging danger and unraveling secrets.

But what really makes this story shine is the HEART. 💕 Noah’s grief, Celeste’s determination, and their growing bond pull you in deeper than the black holes they’re probably flying pasttt.

The ending had me desperate for more. Like, WHEN is the sequel coming?! If you love sci-fi adventures with a whimsical twist, heartfelt connections, and a sprinkle of romance, this is IT.

I was given the opportunity to read an advanced reader copy, thank you Angela Funk!

Enjoyable and unique story with dark and wholesome elements.

Keywords: Sci-fi - Adventure - Cozy vibe - Retelling of Alice in Wonderland - Wholesome rom-com energy - Mythical creatures -Mental health rep - Fun action

To those who saw no future
Yet still found a way

This dedication hit me hard, so emotional but beautiful.

It is a lovely story with great adventure and beautiful scenery. I really love the display of mental health, the struggles of life and how we all need people to love and be loved. I loved the wild and crazy action and the beautiful description of the scenery.
For some reason I really liked Mark a lot as a character🤣 (The jerk with anger issues who can also be very sweet and smart). The joking between Mark and Noah was really fun!

I have to admit the start was a bit unsure and rough for me. I couldn't really connect with the weirdness of the story and the emotions but eventually that subsided and it became very easy and enjoyable to read. I can not wait to read the sequel!

The idea of new worlds always seemed pretty funny to me, even as fiction. But books like these make me wonder if they actually exist. If you're looking to be taken into a world which you pictured to have existed as a kids, this book is for you. From Noah's and Celeste's chemistry to their bond with Katalina and Mark it was all perfectly written. I took this book with 0 expectations but closed it off with a complete heart eagerly waiting to read the next part. So I assure you that this book would make you want to escape into the 'cube shaped' planet and explore the exquisites in there. TWBTH is 100% worth the read and the new characters and introductions will keep you surprised all along.

Thank you to the author for allowing me to ARC read their book, it was truly an honor and I'm glad I was apart of Noah's and Celeste's beginnings together.

What a sensational story! I really enjoyed reading it. The diverse cast of characters, the Alice in wonderland vibes and sci-fi element were all blended together so smoothly. In the early chapters, I kept thinking of the song "Welcome to Wonderland" But that vibe changed, because as beautiful as this wonderland is at the beginning, it isn't without it's flaws. The tempo picks up then (definitely picked up of other songs: "Paradise", "Numb", " Memories", "The Scientist" And "Recovery")

Aside from the themes of wonderland and saving the world, another theme is also displayed and actually roots the story: grief. Grief can be a very touchy and sensitive subject, and even for me while reading it it brought up memories of my grief. What's impressive though, is the way the grief itself is handled. It's portrayed with enough emotion to make you feel it, to understand what the characters are feeling, but not to the extent to fuel your own grief to go out of control. It was really well handled, and the message portrayed in the story is true: grieving hurts, and it will never ever go away.. There may be a time you feel it less, but it will still be there.

Overall a really great book, can't wait to see how the story continues!!

Thank you so much for allowing me to be an ARC reader🫶🏻

I was drawn in immediately from the art on Instagram (@ authorangelafunk), and then reading the summary and learning that it was an Alice in Wonderland retelling was a plus.

Celeste is so easy going, and she brings out a new side to Noah which I love. It’s literally so wholesome watching Noah fall for Celeste and join her on an adventure based solely on trust.

Mark is a hilarious skeptic, while Katalina is a stark contrast that is so much more down for the adventure.

I love the group and their dynamic, and how much of a friendship forms between everyone. This book explores grief and mental health in many layers, and the support everyone gives each other is so sweet. And also their competitions throughout are a great add to the plot.

There is intense, rich worldbuilding in this fast paced sci-fi novel, and it’s all so worth it. I can’t wait to get my hands on the next book!!

Overall, I definitely recommend reading this if you like sci-fi books with wholesome relationships, fun friend groups, and crazy adventures!

I read this last year thinking I was signing up for some light interdimensional whimsy—and instead got sucker-punched by grief, hope, and bizarre physics that made my brain go ??? in the best way possible. One second I’m chuckling over Noah trying to survive Celeste’s unhinged logic, the next I’m spiraling over existential dread and the fate of two literal worlds. And the vibes? Alice in Wonderland but with anxiety and floating islands.

The worldbuilding is so weirdly wonderful that I felt like I accidentally astral-projected halfway through. And the characters?? I would launch myself into the void for that entire group. The way it ended had me pacing like a Victorian widow—so when I found out the sequel came out in April? I blacked out for a second. I haven’t touched it yet because I’m scared it’ll emotionally destroy me (again), but my inner chaos goblin is READY. I just know it’s going to ruin me in the most satisfying way

I had the absolute pleasure of reading The World Beyond the Horizon by Angela Funk as an ARC, and wow, it’s a stunning journey into a whimsical, immersive world. Think Alice in Wonderland X Percy Jackson! 🐇🐉

This cozy sci-fi romcom adventure is full of heart. Noel, the main character, is grief-stricken after the loss of his mother, but a chance encounter with Celeste sparks an astronomical adventure filled with mythical creatures (hello, merpeople & dragons!) and beautiful world-building. 🌊🐉✨ Their dynamic is pure wholesome rom-com energy—complete with "he falls first," "just kiss already," and the swoon-worthy "take my hand" moments!

Funk tackles themes of mental health with grace, as Noel is forced to confront his emotions, realizing that life is still worth living. The writing is as stunning as the world it creates—Angela Funk has crafted something truly special!

This book has a unique, and heartwarming story. If you love whimsical adventures and emotional depth, this one's for you!

Noah is all alone in the world except for his cat. When his cousin invites him to dinner out of the blue, his acceptance leads him to the adventure of a life time.

Reading this book, I’ve had a lot of different thoughts about it. At times I loved it and at other times it wasn’t my favorite. However, over all I really enjoyed this book. The story definitely gave off anime vibes and the characters were relatable. The world building was cool and very descriptive. The author created the perfect world to fit an Alice in Wonderland Retelling.

My only complaint was the use of the F word. It was used 8 times in this book and when it comes to swearing, that word can be a deal breaker for me.

The romance was wholesome and built on meaningful relationships. If you like anime and Alice in Wonderland vibes, I would definitely give this book a try!

Absolutely outstanding, imaginative work of art. I love literary fiction, and this novel leaned really literary to me, while still including a completely unique, surreal science fiction setting. Reading it felt like walking through Pandora (from Avatar) but every place the characters traveled was entirely unexpected. The world was so creative, and the journey from depression to hope had me in the feels. There was one beautiful scene where the main character falls through worlds that had me literally crying, feeling like I was right there with him seeing the beauty in life again. The only sad thing is that I was a beta reader so I can't experience the whole thing for the first time in its final form!

This was a heartfelt, imaginative sci-fi retelling of Alice in Wonderland.

I appreciated the mental health representation. The depiction of grief was especially accurate. The representative of the non-linear healing process was well-written.

The pacing was fast, which made sense for the storyline, however I took frequent breaks while reading to give my mind a bit to catch up from all of the location changes, new characters and creatures.

While I recognize this is the first in a duology, I was left wishing this had more to it. It felt like it ended abruptly (which may be by design to have the story continue in the next book).

I adored the characters and think they were well-developed. The creativity the author had with making a sci-fi novel whimsical and absurd was entertaining!

This book was such an interesting story. I don't read a lot of sci-fi books but I really enjoyed this one. It was different than what I was expecting. The thing that drew me to the book was apocalyptic, but then they travel to another world.

The characters and plot were well written. I enjoyed every moment of it. I really liked Noah and Celeste. The romantic tension between these two were so good. I was giddy reading those parts lol. The world building of the book is so good, I am able to vividly imagine the quirky creatures and the land they are in.

I really enjoyed the characters in this book and I am definitely looking forward to the next one. I can't wait to see where this adventure goes!

"To those who saw no future
Yet found a way"

This story deals a lot with mental health and grief, which I found very relatable. I enjoyed the healing journey that's tied in and how well the characters complimented each other. Celeste's character is a treat!

Angela Funk created an exciting world in this story. I loved the way this author painted such beautifully descriptive sceneries. You really didn't know what to expect the characters to encounter from page to page. I am looking forward to the second book!

If you like fantasy, magical realism, adventures, or fluffy romance you will enjoy this one.

The World Beyond the Horizon by Angela Funk

Okay, so The World Beyond the Horizon is an absolute trip!

Imagine Alice in Wonderland, but make it sci-fi and sprinkle in some serious romantic tension.
Noah is just trying to cope with his mom’s passing when he meets Celeste—who casually drops the news that their planets are about to collide.
Like, what? Talk about a dramatic first date!

The world-building in this book is off the charts. Angela Funk creates such a vivid universe filled with quirky creatures and tons of magic, but it never feels overwhelming.

It’s a perfect blend of whimsy and action that kept me hooked from start to finish.
Plus, the dialogue is packed with sarcasm and charm, making the characters feel so real and relatable.

I seriously can’t wait for book two!

I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

This is a fun and quirky read! Celeste ropes in Noah and his cousin and her fiancee to help save their planets before they collide. The journey to another planet is intriguing and magical for Noah as the new planet works very differently from his. This leads to a fun adventure in a new world. Book 1 spends a lot of time with adventure but, nothing else really happens. We still don't really know why Noah's cousin he barely knows agreed to jump off the edge of a planet with him, how they are going to save the planet of most importantly, when will Noah get the confidence to tell Celeste his feelings for her! Hoping book 2 gives us more answers. 3.5 stars.

The World Beyond the Horizon offers readers a bit of everything you could ask for. The characters are likable and layered, the plot is exciting and unique, and the author’s writing style keeps you constantly engaged. There were moments while reading where I laughed along with the characters and also moments where I truly empathized with their insecurities or past trauma. There is also an overarching theme surrounding life, death, and grief that I felt was handled incredibly well. I thoroughly enjoyed this story and I cannot wait for the next installment of the series!

A thrilling book filled with wonderful adventure. It was whimsical especially for a book that was advertised as wonderland inspired. The way the characters were described in the book made me want to learn more about them. The author captured many emotions flawlessly throughout the book up to the point where sometimes, I felt that I was the character in the book. In my opinion, this book is great for a cozy read . However, what may be my cup of tea may not be yours but, I do hope you give this book a chance!
