Although we often think of fables as intended for the enlightenment and entertainment of children, here is one that adults will want to read. Mary Fahy has written a tale aimed at persons who find themselves in a period of transition, or who are experiencing loss or new birth in their lives. She tells the story of a tree that awakens one spring morning to discover that she has survived the winter, but with many changes in her being and appearance. Overcoming feelings of anger, fear and abandonment, the tree comes to appreciate the abundance she has been given and finds ways to share this mystery with others. Finally, the tree understands the mystery of love and fidelity. In the tradition of Hope for the Flowers, this beautifully illustrated, sensitively written book has become a classic in its own right. Readers will recognize their own story in it―a story of affirmation, indomitable spirit and love. †
This book was sent to me by a dear friend. I don't know how she knew just what I needed! I finished chemo about three mnths ago and have been experiencing a lot of fustration with little annoying changes and limitations. This short book is, like the title says, a fable about a tree that survives the winter but remembers the hardships. The tree learns that it is not enough to survive. We need to learn from the hardships of winter and be grateful for hope and faith.
The Tree that Survived the Winter by Mary Fahy, illustrated by Emil Antonucci is a parable about a tree awakening from winter and rediscovering springtime and the joys of life. In what is a definite abuse of the personification trope the story is a cornball conversation between the tree and the sun. Designed to inspire friendship, hope and faithfulness it seems like a prime candidate for Hallmark Cards Greatest Hits.
The Tree That Survived The Winter, by Mary Fahy and illustrated by Emil Antonucci, is a short and sweet book about not giving up despite hardships. That growing through the difficulties makes one stronger. And that surviving hardships while remaining grateful, makes one lovely and precious. A good reminder.
I wish I knew where this book came from…as I was packing my journals I found it…and something told me to pull it out and read it. And my God…I know it was YOU telling me to read it…how beautiful was this story…so serene, gentle, and tender. Almost like a breeze in the wind…but as powerful as an earthquake…this is a must read for anyone and everyone.
Many years ago, at the beginning of my journey, someone very special gifted me this book. I just reread it and am reminded of the winters I’ve survived, the wonderful friends that have encouraged me and the One who named me.
I loved this book! As someone who struggles with mental illnesses and a chronic disease, this book spoke to my soul and brought peace, comfort, and the feeling of being heard and understood. This is a beautiful book of the strength and beauty we incur when surviving our own winters. :)
This book like the Giving Tree is a magnificent work of art, both in the telling of the story and the artwork.Anyone young or old, sick or well, will enjoy this book. This book reaches to the depths of your soul, and warms your heart to the core. The book contains beautiful illustrations, that said this book was a gift to me during a difficult time in my life. I believe the note that my dear teacher wrote inside sums it up quite nicely: "Everytime I have read this book, I have grown a bit more. I wish only that you have the same opportunity."
I purchased this book during the writing of my book "Emerging With Wings" and found it to be better than I expected. It is simple and profound. It is validating and encouraging. I passed my copy along to a fellow survivor of abuse.
A good read for any age, for every age whenever you are that age. In other words, you will probably read again and again and it will provide fresh new insights, reflections, thoughts and yearnings. A keeper for your shelf.
A wonderful book that can be read to children. This little book has some deep truths hidden in it for some adults who may see themselves throughout the story.
