Stasia would do anything to be one of The beautiful. The sexy. The popular.
When she learns of The Book of the Curburide, a treasure trove of demonic lore, she finally knows how she can attain what she desires. Only through the book can she summon Malphus, a Curburide demon who endows mortals with deadly beauty and sensuality.
She’ll need to travel halfway across the world to Barcelona to learn the Curburide's secrets. And she'll have to undertake the darkest trials of sex and blood to gain access to the book, which is guarded by the Church of the Flesh.
But no matter what the cost, Stasia is determined that no person or perversion will prevent her from... Raising Malphus.
John Everson is a former newspaper reporter who writes thrillers filled with erotic horror and supernatural suspense. He is the author of the Bram Stoker Award winner Covenant, and finalist NightWhere, which reviewers called "50 Shades Meets Hellraiser!" He is also the creator of the characters Danika and Mila Dubov, seen in the Netflix series V-Wars, based on the books created by Jonathan Maberry. Booklist said his recent New Orleans novel, Voodoo Heart, "is a solid blend of supernatural horror and hard-boiled detective fiction, and should appeal to horror devotees as well as mystery buffs” while Living Dead Magazine called him "the master of dark and sexy."
Not at all what I was expecting. While anyone can see that Everson knows how to write, I do feel like the pacing of this novella is off. It felt like it took forever to get to a scene that wasn't face to black or vague then, when it finally caught up, the actual plot took a cliche turn that felt like a ruined orgasm after being edged. That said, there was enough meat to this bone to make me want to read is other work and see if the pacing in his novels is better.
