Molly Franks hates life in the limelight. That’s why she jumped at the chance to just be an anonymous pre-med student at Crestwood University. She changed her name and took a chance that no one would recognize her for her famous father’s accomplishments. So, when she meets the guy assigned to protect her, she is not amused, even if he is hot as hell. Why does she always have to be different?
John O’Rourke has no desire to babysit a college student. When he was first assigned Molly’s case, he dreaded following around the young woman. Once he meets her, everything changes. He knows she is meant to be his, and when she suggests he needs a cover, he immediately volunteers to be her fake boyfriend. What could go wrong with a fake relationship when the two people involved desire each other? Oh, just about everything
Molly Franks is a nerdy, insecure, virginal college student who is forced to get a bodyguard because of her father’s work. Enter the hot, handsome, Irishman, John O’Rourke, who, despite her objections, guards her body a little more closely than predicted.
My first Harper Michaels novel which happens to be the second book in the Savannah Heroes series was an average read for me. Overall, it wasn’t a bad story. I liked the concept and the characters weren’t bad. However, while I appreciated the concept and the characters, the whole insta-love trope had me scratching my head a bit. I mean, one moment Molly is this shy, introverted girl, and the next, she’s throwing herself at John with an enthusiasm that felt a tad unrealistic. It’s a classic case of insta-love, but I couldn’t help but feel my suspension of disbelief was stretched a bit too thin.
In addition, I was a little frustrated with John. This guy has a job to do, yet he seems more preoccupied with his budding romance than actually keeping Molly safe. I get it; he’s handsome and charming, but come on, priorities, man.
I have to say the writing itself was pretty solid. The suspense elements were delivered well, keeping me engaged throughout the story. However, I did find some of the plot twists predictable, and I figured out the villain quite early on. Not exactly the thrilling surprise I was hoping for. Perhaps the romance was a bit too intense for my liking using “my heart is completely hers” while not even a quarter way through the book.
If you’re looking for a fast-paced, sugary romantic read with a sprinkle of suspense, this book might just be your jam. Despite some of my reservations, I think it offers just the right dose of romance for those who love their love stories to move at lightning speed.
Thank you to Ms. Michaels for giving me the opportunity to read this book with no expectation of a positive read.
This was a really entertaining novella about a college student named Molly and her bodyguard John who is a hunky Irishman. This was a fun light read. I often like reading novellas in between longer dark romances. I enjoy the insta love and fake dating tropes and also an over the top possessive jealous male character. The sexual tension between Molly and John was really great. They decided John would be her fake boyfriend so he would have more excuses to be close to her. We all know what ends up happening. Real feelings start!
If the first book I read by an author isn’t quite to my taste, I always try to read a second one so that I’m not stuck with my first opinion—except in cases where I really have a problem with the content of the book.
So I gave Harper Michaels that ‘second chance’ by reading My Only Protector. To be honest, I already know that this will probably be the last time I read a book by this author. In itself, I don’t have much to complain about, My Only Protector is a fairly quick read, but it just wasn’t to my taste.
Personally, I found the story a little too ‘cliché’ and the events too predictable. If it works in some books, it didn’t work for me in this one.
Thanks to Harper Michaels and Nisha’s Books and Coffee PR for giving me the opportunity to read an ARC of My Only Protector. This review is my own. All opinions expressed are mine.
This heartwarming story had me all caught up in Molly and John. To escape the public exposure surrounding her father she jumps at the chance to go to college but ends up with a bodyguard anyways. John was not happy about his assignment until he meets Molly and sparks go off. He knows she is the woman of his dreams and when she tells him he needs a cover he suggests that he become her fake boyfriend but what starts off as a deception turns into something much more between the. Will their fake relationship lead them to happiness. I am volunteering to leave a review for an ARC of this book.
We are back at Crestwood University... with bodyguards 🥵! There is just something about a posessive, overprotective man who gets jealous when the guy in your class talks to you that just makes me 🫠. I rather enjoyed this novella and could have absolutely spent more time with these two.
Well that novella escalated quickly and can we say our MMC "protector" is cocky much?! Maybe a little too much where it's almost creepy but I loved it bc it wasn't that level! All I could think of is the song "my buddy" wherever I go she goes lol!
I freaking love this series so far! And of course I’m partial to John…. Us Irish have to stick together! 😍 another sweet, spicy, to the point winner for Harper! Keep ‘em coming!! (Ps- bonus epilogue?? YAAAASSSSS!!!)
Cutesy novella. Hunky Irish body guard falling for his protectee. Quite fast moving, so a touch light on content. Still enjoyable though for a quick read.
Was a very good short story I really didn’t expect the person that was behind the threats to be who it was. I’m glad that person was caught and is now in jail.
