For one week, the Ile de la Reverie doesn’t sleep. One week of mystical experiences, lavish events, and magical phenomenon take place on the secluded land I call home. Reverie Island hosts the exclusive carnival every year, and every year, my act as magician’s assistant claims the title as the best performance. Guests travel from all over the world to come here, and we give them nothing but the best. Everything is set and ready to go and I’m ready to step into the spotlight. That is, until something drastic occurs and I’m forced to switch partners, changing the trajectory of the week and the success of the island’s events. My life on the Island relies on my ability to perform well, and with the brisk turn of events, I have to find a way to stay on the correct path. Even though my new partner refuses to work with me.
Now, I’m stuck with someone who would rather perform alone, and I find myself lingering in the imbalance of our dynamic.
One week of unanswered questions, secret battles, and blind faith find me when it should be the best week of the year.
Time will tell if the growing trust between us prevails.
Another amazing book written by S.Everest. I will start off by saying, definitely pay attention to your triggers at the beginning of the book. This book was an experience. I enjoyed the carnival approach and feeling like I was behind the scenes for it. Willa is a girl who delt with some hard shit, and I honestly don't blame her for going when she was offered the chance, despite being under the age of requirement(at the time), I believe her getting out and going there was for the better. Bram, on the other hand, is a pos and honestly glad to what happened to him(wish it was a little more though). Dres, a man of true magic, was thrilling. His story was twisted, though you didn't really know why until the end. The twist toward the end had my hand to my mouth in shock cause I didn't know Dres was going to do that at all. The cover at first didn't make sense to me seeing as though it was a story about a girl and her life at the carnival, but after that one night with Dres, I understood and it brought a tear to my eyes.
The book was well written, though some things I had to stop and go reread to better understand it. The little fourth wall breaks were awesome. One even had me scream out loud what it was referring to. Overall, this was a great read, and with that cliffhanger ending, I can't wait to see what Willa and Dres get up to next.

"All he did was simply exist with me, and the melody of him was matched with the harmony of my soul."
I remember when I read Between and was captivated by Sev's writing style. The sensory immersion, the flow, the worlds she creates... Illusion lived up to my every hope for her composition. It's so unlike all of her other books, yet feels so "her."
I went into this blind and I encourage you to do the same. Don't Google, don't spoil anything for yourself. Every theory I had, every inkling that I knew what was going on, POOF. Sev's TW page indicates that it has an ending that some may consider a cliffhanger, and for once I was completely satisfied with an "open" conclusion. It just felt right. I got everything I wanted from her characters and the story, I can't imagine it ending any differently. If it continues, I will absolutely be devouring that, but for now, l'm content in my Illusion bubble. Come to think of it, Jay Kristoff and Sev are the only authors that I truly enjoy who write non-conventional endings.
Put Illusion on your TBR - no summaries, no spoilers, and just enjoy the magic. To@severest.author, thank you so much for the physical ARC and the opportunity to read it. I am incredibly grateful and am so excited for it to be released 12 March!!!
Thanks to S Everest and Booksirens for providing me with a copy of this book.
Overall, I enjoyed the premise and ideas of the story. It was fun and different to anything I’ve read before. The magic element was exciting and tense. However, the book was quite short and I felt like it would have benefitted from being longer as I did not feel any connection to the characters. I would have liked to have known about Willa’s background at the start of the story rather than the end. It felt like the romance was rushed at the end, another reason why it could have been longer.
I am giving 4 stars because it had me hooked all the way through and the ending made me throw my kindle across the room.
I loved this book. S. Everest has the most intriguing mind and she is the queen of open ended endings. She's definitely on my automatic buy list because I HAVE to read everything she writes.
This book is told from Willa's POV with the exception of one chapter. This is a pretty short story, much like Between. Willa lives on an island that performs one week of the year for the wealthy that can afford to get a ticket. This island is like one big circus. She is a magician's assistant and has been on this island since she was 16 years old. There are so many characters in this book and not all of them of are great. Biggest dick in this book is the magician, Bram. Eventually, Vark (the owner) brings new talent to the island. This new talent is another magician named Dresden. There's an instant connection between Willa and Dres. When Bram can no longer perform, Vark forces Dres to take Willa on as his assistant even though he prefers to work alone.
This book gave me just about every feel. Its got some triggers in it so be careful. Willa was such an amazing person and the things she went through was so shitty I wanted to start punching people. People be Bram. He was the worst narcissist. Her friend, Six, though was so amazing. He was there for her even when she didn't want his help. But the dude that stole the show was obviously Dres. Holy shit, that man had me fanning myself. He was the silent broody type but his protectiveness over Willa was over the top hot.
The things Dres went through were intense and the things he was running away from had my heart sinking because it lead to what he had to do towards the end of the book. That almost broke my heart. The ending was a gut punch because you don't know if its fully solved or not but because she's the master of a bittersweet ending, I was just grateful it ended the way it did.
Do I wish there is going to be another book and bring more to the story? Absofuckinglutely. Am I holding my breath for it? No. I'm pretty sure this is just like Between where you get what you get even when you're begging for more.
I highly recommend you pick this book up. Its so worth it!

Obligatory disclaimer about this being an ARC read because it was an ARC and I read it.
I’m not typically a reader of fantasy/dark fantasy books, but I’m always willing to take a step out of my comfort zone and try new things. What I really enjoyed about Illusion was how the fantasy elements sneak up on you. You aren’t given any warnings until they surface in the story line, and by the end of the book they’re literally running at you in a full sprint.
For one week each year, Reverie Island hosts a magical carnival filled with mystical experiences and lavish events, and Willa is a successful magician’s assistant. Everything goes according to plan until a sudden change forces her to partner with Dresden, a new addition to the island who appears unwilling to work as a team, threatening her success and place on the island. As the week unfolds with secrets, challenges, and unexpected struggles, Willa must find a way to make it work and stay on track. The relationship between Willa and Dresden is constantly changing and evolving, and is a non-stop source of plot tension and anticipation.
I found this to be a comforting read. I enjoyed the excitement of Reverie Island and meeting all the interesting characters and performers who brought the carnival to life. However, I do wish there was more development in the relationship between Willa and Dresden. At times, it felt like they skipped over some key checkpoints, and things progressed a little too quickly. There were also some plot points that I felt could have been explored in more detail or extended to give the story even more depth.
Overall, an enjoyable read and kudos to the author for bringing a complex story line to life.

I wasn’t sure what to expect when I picked up Illusion, but wow, this book completely pulled me in. It’s dark, intense, and totally addictive. The setting is so atmospheric; the whole idea of a secret carnival on a secluded island immediately hooked me, and the writing makes you feel like you’re right there. Willa is such a strong but deeply trapped character, and I really felt for her. The way she’s stuck in this world, trying to survive while dealing with the awful reality of her situation, makes her incredibly compelling. Bram is one of those villains you instantly hate (and keep hating), while Dresden is super intriguing. The tension between him and Willa is subtle but gripping, especially with the whole mystery around whether his magic is real. The book definitely leans into heavy themes, so be warned, it’s not a light read. Some parts are tough, and Willa spends a lot of time just trying to get through the day rather than actively fighting back. But honestly, that made her journey feel real. And when those moments of resistance come, they hit even harder. The only thing I wish I had more of was world building, like, how does this island really work? Why do people stay? But at the same time, that mystery kind of adds to the eerie feel of it all, so I wasn’t too bothered. I’m really curious to see where things go next. There are a lot of unanswered questions, and I can’t wait to read book two. Overall, I really loved Illusion. The writing style is beautiful and super engaging. It has this haunting quality that lingers even after you’ve finished reading. So, I totally recommend it to anyone who loves dark and atmospheric stories with morally nuanced characters.
An intriguing and captivating dark fantasy, Illusion tells the tale of magician’s assistant Willa and her life at the lavish carnival on Ile de la Reverie. While she’s an expert on selling the illusions of her magic shows and on ensuring her own survival on the isolated island, her life - and all that she thought she knew - turns upside down with the arrival of another magician.
Illusion is a unique roller-coaster of a book which toes the line between science-fiction, fantasy and romance. The story is addicting and the world is absolutely immersive, and I’m in two minds about its shorter length. On one hand, delectable conciseness and lack of explanation treats the reader to an ephemeral snapshot of Willa’s life-changing week, with her lack of comprehension about the unfolding events mirroring our own. On the other hand, some additional world-building at the start, particularly around the circumstances of the carnival’s existence and Willa’s life, would have laid a more solid foundation which could have been more effectively shaken by the events later in the book.
Part of Illusion’s charm comes from a certain grittiness in the story. The mysteriously tense chemistry between Willa and Dres unfolded beautifully, as did the magical elements, however some of the more unsavoury graphic scenes felt slightly excessive.
Overall, Illusion is a dark and atmospheric story with fantastical elements and a hauntingly tender ending. A non-negotiable addition to your to-read pile.
I received an Advance Reader Copy (ARC) of this book through BookSirens. Thank you to the author, publisher and BookSirens for the opportunity to read this book and provide an honest review.
Since I first picked up my first Sev book almost a year ago, she has never failed to absolutely blow me away and confuse the absolute fuck out of me in the most wonderful and welcomed way. Illusion is no exception.
When a new magician shows up to Reverie Island the week of their famous carnival, everything gets shaken up - especially the current magic act that was a highlight of the week. I do think it’s always best to go blind into Sev’s books, so I don’t want to give too much away, but let me paint a picture for you: an elite carnival, a magic show the audience will never forget, real or not real, “do you trust me?”, late night escapades, and an ending that will have you gripping the pages begging to know what happens next. I loved Willa and Dres so much; their chemistry was absolutely palpable and jumped off the pages. I also loved Six and would love to see more of him <3 I’m thrilled that this is just book #1 in the Dream Series and I cannot wait to see what comes next.
Sev’s writing hooks you in from the very first page and doesn’t let up it’s grip until the very last page. I want so badly to see how her brain works to understand how she comes up with her characters, plots, and the twists and turns that she has made herself known for. At no point did I know what to expect next, and this book was such a thrilling and fun ride. As always, check trigger warnings!
Illusion comes out TOMORROW, March 12th, and this is NOT something you’ll want to miss. Thank you so much, Sev, for trusting me with an ARC!🤍
I was given the opportunity to read this as an ARC in return for an honest review:)
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️.5/5 🌶️/5
☆ Magic Tricks ☆ Magician x Magician Assistant ☆ Magic Daddy 👀🔥 ☆ Secret Society ☆ Slight enemies to lovers ☆ Touch her you 💀 ~~~~~~~ The story: I’ve only read 2 or 3 other carnival/circus themed books, but I think this one takes the cake! I loved the whole plot and just the whole idea of how this carnival came to be. The setting, visualization, description, and everything was just immaculate and it was so beautiful! The island was such a good choice for the setting, and the descriptions of what it looked like was amazing and I saw exactly how it was described! ALSO- THE FORGET ME NOTS????? Love that touch, because it all comes together in the end 😍
The characters: The beautiful characterization of Willa, Dres, Vark, Six, and Bram is stuck in my head. Each one is so magically different! I love how strong and powerful Willa is. She is a storm to reckoned with and I love the bad assery within her. There were times where she showed vulnerability and I always feel something when characters are a little vulnerable. Especially when the men are. With Dres, he isn’t too keen on talking or explaining, and that definitely added to the mystery of his character. But the character development was so strong and I just loved it!! Six: I love you, babe. And Vark? He’s just- he’s something. Bram? I pictured him as Raul from the 2004 Phantom of the Opera. So, I’m sorry for that image lmao
The spice: I rated this a 🌶️/5 on the pepper scale. There was 1 open door scene of a loving and wholesome night between two characters.
Warning, there are graphic on paper depictions of sexual assault. I do not consider that spicy, so it does not count towards the spice scale. Please keep this in mind when reading!!
Overall, I really liked this book! Thank you for giving me the opportunity to read this and I hope to read more from Ms. Everest!
Illusion is a dark, slow-burn romantasy set in a secluded carnival that opens for just one mysterious week each year. Offering a world that feels completely immersive, magical, and unlike anything I’ve read before.
Willa is a magician’s assistant trapped in a toxic, abusive partnership. Their act is the best act on the grounds… until Dres shows up. He’s the new magician with tricks that feel a little too real 🔥 . And from the moment he arrives, the entire energy shifts.
This is a very slow burn, but the tension builds beautifully. If you’re into tropes like found family, touch-her-and-die, hidden powers, emotional scars, and (a lot of) miscommunication, this one delivers. The romance is drawn out, but when it starts to spark, it feels earned.
Dres is mysterious, constantly moving from place to place, clearly protecting something. As the layers peel back, you start to understand why he keeps his distance—and why Willa might be the one person to reach him.
Please read the trigger warnings. This book deals with rape, sexual assault, domestic violence, child abuse, and misogyny. These themes are handled with care and clarity, without being romanticized.
The writing is emotional and immersive. The story is full of slow-building trust, meaningful tension, and a magic system that makes the whole world feel just slightly off in the best way.
And that cliffhanger ending? Devastating . I can’t stop thinking about it.
I received an ARC, but this review is completely honest.
*ARC review* I received a copy of this book for free and am leaving this review voluntarily.
THAT ENDING!!! I was between a 4 and a 5 but am going with 5 ⭐️ because I was shocked and I love a twist that I didn’t see coming.
This is my first book from this author so I came into it rather blindly and it’s bit out of my usual genre. It’s not a traditional romance book imo, more of a fiction novel with a romance storyline. There’s a slight difference! The slow burn was reall. I was kind of like *can we move forward already??* towards the middle-end but then the story gets more interesting when truths are revealed. You will feel so sad for the main characters and then ultimately the ending had me screaming! Not in a bad way but in an “OMG” way. It’s short, it’s fast, it doesn’t explain everything and it doesn’t intend to. This book really truly is about the “illusion” of it all and I’m an epilogue girly but the stylistic choice to leave the ending the way it was without an epilogue or a promise for a 2nd book was the right one. I usually don’t like open-endings but this one, I actually really did. It just sort of felt right to me and I think you’ll know what I mean when you read it.
So yes 5 stars for this quick captivating read that hooked me in right away and has some heart in it too!
"If I didn't want you here, you wouldn't be here. But you're here, with me, because it's exactly where I want you to be." -Dres
THIS BOOK! THIS BOOK! It is all that's consumed my brain since devouring it whole. It is 100% the top read of the year for me thus far! Hands down!
I'm gonna be very vague here. What I will say about this book is, it is NOT at all what you're expecting. Going in completely blind is the best way to go in to it, or any Sev book for that matter. You'll get an open-ended ending and also some trigger warnings. You'll love and hate characters. Your mind will be going what-the-what best believe. Her books do this EVERYtime for me.
Also, it's book 1 in The Dream Series. Ahhhhhh best news ever knowing I get more of this world!
Gawd I loved every second of this book. I wanna just jump in and start it all over again. I knowwwww I missed Easter eggs and things. I did take notes though, thinking oh I'm smart enough this will help me. My theories I was so sure on, were also not at all correct... shocker. I knew Sev would throw me but I was hopeful.
Anywho I've rambled enough. I just can't move on from these characters and story. All I wanna do is scream about it!
With S.Everest you should brace yourself for the unexpected. I knew she would pull the rug from beneath my feet at some point. But what she delivered? I honestly sat with this one for hours, debating whether I wanted to dissect it or just let myself feel. And then, the words “I’ve always been alone” played in my mind, and I found myself choosing the latter. I’m a crier. And this one… it broke my heart. Everests ability to blend the emotional with the fantasical was like a tightrope walk but this was nothing short of exciting.
This isn’t your typical romance. The thrills, the excitement, and that undeniable chemistry are all there, but they’re woven into the magical and mysterious allure of the carnival. For one week each year, Ile De La Reverie comes alive offering an experience unlike any other.
And with the introduction of a new act, new magic is born. When everything she knows is all an illusion, can Willa allow herself to trust?
From the very beginning, this is heavy. The CWs are not something to overlook. But even with that said, the story pulls you in.
I knew after reading S. Everests last book, I knew she would be on my list of authors to look out for in the future. When I saw this was a book about a group on island that puts on extraordinary carnival shows and has magicians, which isnt my normal type of read, I knew it was going to be good. Everest is one of the few authors that can really pack a punch in a shorter book and keep you on your toes. The ending was fantastic! I wanted more and I hope there will be more. Usually i say I want to have more of a connection with a characte or between characters if there is sort of a disconnect, in this case it would have been the MMC, but for once I dont. You get just enough of the MMC, mainly through the eyes of the FMC, but not enough to grasp who he really is- he is what the title of the book is… an "illusion". It was perfect and alluring. Then the way it was all wrapped up in the end was perfection.

I absolutely devoured this book!!! The way Everest paints a picture in your mind makes you feel like you’re actually inside of the story. I fell in love with the carnival vibes, so much so I really wanted to take a trip to Reverie Island myself and immerse myself into the story. My heart squeezed so much for the FMC Willa because of everything she went through. When she met the MMC Dres, I knew he would be the one to save her and boyyyyy, it did not disappoint. I loved the slow burn between the two of them and the mystery surrounding Dres and his magic kept me coming back for more.
This was a fun, easy read & if you want to immerse yourself in the world of carnivals and magic with a little bit of spice sprinkled in, then you will love this book! ♥️
*disclaimer* I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
once again, sev — you did not disappoint with this upcoming release!! god, i love every single book this author puts out. her story telling & writing just gets better & better with each book. sev has a way to captivate you with her storytelling. from start to end, i couldn’t put the book down. i honestly don’t even have the right words to explain what you’re reading, except if you love a mystery & adventures, with lots of tension, and of course what sev’s books are know for, non-traditional endings — pick it up, you won’t be disappointed. do heed trigger warnings before diving in cause the story contains very sensitive & triggering topics. willa our fmc, has been through so much shit but i love her sm. along with dres and most of the side characters were great — everyone except *bram* he can go to hell. i also loved the found family trope in this one 🥹
I will be honest in saying that this is the only book by this author that I have read, and I did not enjoy her writing style. Yes, I did enjoy parts of this book but thought that there are way too many gaps in narrative of the island and its residents. The characters were all interesting, but I would have preferred a bit more character development/information on them earlier in the narrative. If you have read this author’s previous work, then I’m sure you will enjoy this book. I’m not sure if I can recommend this book, so I will just say that I read it because the book blurb interested me. I will also add that there are possible triggers for some readers, and I didn’t see any warnings on the sites that sell this book.
I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary ARC of this book.
omg this book… where do i even start?! ill start with saying i devoured this book in one sitting, it had me hooked from the start and i could not put it down. i saw myself in Willa in her encounters with Bram as someone who also has been through SA and that made me connect with her deeply. i loved seeing as Dres and Willa’s chemistry grew more and how she learned to trust him. the entire story was just *chef’s kiss*. now, i will say— i have not had a book make me sob in a long time!! the last couple chapters wrecked me and as soon as i read the last paragraph, i found myself instantly NEEDING more. i highly recommend this book and will certainly continue reading when more in the series comes out (hopefully 😭 it’s book 1 so i hope there’s some more coming) *i received an advance review copy for free, and i am leaving this review voluntarily*
This is the 2nd Everest book I've read, and it didn't disappoint. Well, except that I don't already have book 2. This book is definitely a magical experience. It takes you through all the emotions. The characters and the plot are intriguing, intense, dark, and mysterious. Willa, the FMC, lives on Reverie Island, and for one week out of the year, they host a secret circus for the wealthy. She's a magician's assistant stuck in a situation she hates but loves the island and her found family she's gained. Everything changes when the MMC, Dres, arrives on the island. Both characters have been through so much and carry major baggage. You feel all of it! The ending.....ugh! I need to know what happens next for Willa and Dres. Thank you, Booksirens, for this arc. I'm gladly leaving an honest review.
Illusion by S. Everest is one of those rare gems that sweeps you off your feet and refuses to let go. I devoured it in one sitting—it’s that good. Beautifully written, emotionally rich, and deeply immersive, this story pulls you in from the very first page and doesn’t loosen its grip until long after the final words.
It’s a roller coaster in the best way—heart-wrenching, poetic, and filled with moments that stay with you. The prose is stunning, the pacing flows effortlessly, and the characters are so well drawn they feel real. Every twist hit perfectly, and every quiet moment between the chaos was layered with meaning.
If you love a book that makes you feel, one that’s both emotionally intense and elegantly told, Illusion is a must-read. I can’t recommend it enough.
I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
It’s not often these days that I get to start a book with little to no idea of what it’s going to be about, so that instantly made starting this book a fun adventure.
I wish the story had been a bit longer to really explore the backstory of the characters and setting, but perhaps that will be coming in Book 2. I would have liked more insight into Willa’s and Bram’s backgrounds, as well as how the week tradition began.
There were a few grammatical flaws in the writing, particularly with tense chances, but nothing that hindered my ability to follow the story.
I wasn’t obsessed, but I’m intrigued enough to absolutely want to read the next book in this series.
I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
3.5⭐️ This is the first book I ever read from this author and it wasn't bad but I just couldn't get into. She got me from the blurb and I had so much hope for it and don't get me wrong is not bad and I need to add I did read the first publication so not sure if she made any changes on the second publication. Check your tw and if you like magician/magician assistant, magic trick, secret society, somewhat enemies to lovers with a magic daddy with the whole touch her you ☠️ this book is for you.
Received a copy for my opinion and planning to revisit this story some times soon and see what happens.
What a story this was, and I'm eagerly awaiting the next book in this series. As always Sev brings us into a curious world where she has our minds turning and going on over drive trying to put the pieces together. I I need to reread and find some more connections 😉
This story has so many feels, from dread, to love, to fascination. I know I always say this about her books but once again I've never read something quite like this. The premise for the week long festivities to the background of Dresden is all so interesting and I am left needing more.
I loved this book and its story! S. Everest somehow always manages to create strange worlds and plottwists that feel kinda dreamlike but also really creative. You're never quite sure what will happen next and there's a surprise around every corner. The atmosphere of the book really reminded my of The Night Circus or Caraval so if you like these books give this one a try. But be warned: It's pretty short and the ending is really abrupt and will leave you wanting for more.
*thanks to BookSirens and S. Everest for trusting me with an ARC copy
This was a freaky lil book and I thoroughly enjoyed it! I was hooked from the start and read it in one sitting. The writing was wonderful and I could really get a sense of the island, characters, and overall atmosphere while reading. There were some dark and potentially triggering scenes, but Everest did a great job making them feel necessary for the story and characters. This book made me feel all of the feelings and the ending was so frustrating but in the best way! Now on to Illicit!
This book had me gripping my seat in pure fascination and curiosity. I was losing sleep over this book. I couldn’t stop thinking about it. I am really hoping there is a second one because I need more and I need it now. It was beautifully written. The movie played in my head perfectly. It didn’t have much spice but the tension between the characters and this very plot heavy book just kept me going. The MMC, chefs kiss, I need more of him. The FMC, I feel like I can relate to her in some aspects and her story is written so well. I will recommend this book to everyone
Always love a good Everest book! Great world building, relatable characters, and a slow burn to keep you hooked the whole time! This had me hooked from the beginning and I loved every minute of it! I should’ve been ready for that Everest twist, but it got me and I can’t wait to see it expounded on in book 2 because that cliffhanger had me wanting it now!! Definitely read this book!!
Thank you to S. Everest and Booksirens for the ARC!🖤
Have you ever finished a book and immediately started it again? I did with this one.
I haven’t swooned from a book in such a long time. I stayed up way past my bed time consuming these words, I paused and reread sentences, put my hand over parts of my Kindle so I wouldn’t accidentally skip ahead. It was that good.
Her books are always so well thought out and executed so perfectly every time. The story was so beautiful and just so captivating I literally could not put it down!
I don't have the words to express how much I love this book. I am so excited for the next one!
2.5 rounded to 3. I’m not sure how i feel about this book… I didn't realize there would be r@pe.. usually books have mention of past ones that they're trying to overcome but I didn't know it was going to be so... explicit? I also didn't feel anything for the MMC... he barely talked and the actions that he did do, we're just supposed to accept he was doing it for our FMC... yeah okay. So while he did see her get r@pe he didn’t try and stop it or light the other guy on fire or something... you know... not let it happen to her. I don't know, maybe I'm asking too much 🤷🏻♀️ but the carnival and a mention of experimentation was interesting.
