Rate this book
All Lola wants is to enjoy life like any normal teenager. But that feels out of reach when she begins to have haunting visions of blood and chaos. Even with her loyal friends—who have stood by her despite her dark vampire past—Lola can’t shake the foreboding sense that something wicked is coming.

When a mysterious carnival rolls into town and pitches its tents on Duchesne Island, its dazzling lights and hypnotic music seem to cast a strange spell over the population…including Lola’s friends. Beneath the carnival’s glittering façade lurks something sinister, and Lola knows the charismatic ringmaster isn’t what he seems.

To save the people she loves, Lola must untangle the dark secrets of the Carnival of Fools. But as her visions grow more terrifying, she realizes the stakes are higher than she ever imagined—and her connection with the Otherworld may be the key to stopping the coming storm.

I find myself to be very surprised at how much I enjoyed this. I wasn’t sure what to expect about this, especially since I actually haven’t read the first book of this series. I took a chance on it because the description seemed interesting.

The Carnival of Fools is a very easy read. Even without the first one, it was fairly easy to understand the dynamics and the backstory, so it made it very enjoyable. It’s also really well paced. There’s never a part that I felt was boring or out of place. It had just enough in the beginning to really catch my attention, followed by a really great build-up.

Now, I’ll admit I’m not really one for fantasies or paranormal stories that are so intense being associated with teens. I thought this would be more fitting in the context of young adults, like 18+/early 20’s. Especially when a lot of the story is attributed to desires. It kind of took me out of it when I was reminded they were 16, but that’s very specific to me, and I’m sure it wouldn’t bother most readers.

Honestly, I might go back to read the first book and will be anticipating the third of the series.

I’m grateful to Brown Cat Press and BookSirens for the ARC. While this is a free copy, I am voluntarily giving my honest review of the book.

A tantalizing, immersive and suspense fueled second installment to the Well of Souls series, The Carnival Of Fools cleverly blends both the supernatural world of monsters with the human world resulting in a very enjoyable and fast paced YA fantasy read complete with horror elements and adventure.
In the story, the character of Lola is trying to navigate her way in the world as a newly human girl having once been a bloodthirsty, evil vampire hellbent on killing people for what she thought was the greater good.
It outlines her own personal growth and journey throughout the story whilst, with the help of her friends, saving her town and extinguishing the otherworldly evil lurking within it with a macabre agenda of its own through its monsters (lycanthropes).
I read this story in three sittings and I am looking forward to reading the next book in the series.

This was a fun young adult fantasy full of paranormal elements and adventure. This is book 2 in the Port of Lost Souls series and I was able to jump right in without having read the first book.

I absolutely loved the carnival setting and how the plot took you to various attractions and how they were incorporated into the story. I’ve always been intrigued by this type of setting so it was the perfect backdrop for this unique story with just enough spooky factor to really tie it all together.

This was a fun, quick read and I can’t wait to see how the story continues in the next book!

This book was good, I loved the synopsis as soon as I read it. I loved the setting of the carnival, it was so flashy yet spooky and it was just an amazing place. The characters were well written, and I really liked what they added to the story. I liked the ending as well, it was very satisfying and I feel could definitely lead to more in the future which I'm very excited about! I definitely wanna try out more of Cordelia Kelly's book in the future!!

This was a quick and enjoyable young adult fantasy. Carnival Of Fools is book two in the Port Of Lost Souls series and can be read fairly easily without having read the previous book. I loved the immersive carnival setting and the easy to read writing style. I liked the overall storyline and the cast of characters. I look forward to reading more books by this author in the future.

Thank you to the author for the gifted copy.

Really enjoyed this book. It was such a fun and easy read. I took my time but really could have finished this one in a day. Although, you don’t necessarily need to read The Well of Souls, the first book in this series to enjoy this one. I’d recommend you start with the first one to get a little more on Lola’s character. I’ll definitely be picking up the first and the rest of the books in this series.

Huge thanks to BookSirens and Cordelia Kelly for a free copy of this ARC!

I received an ARC of this book, which does not affect my review. Thank you to the author and Booksirens for the chance to read this book.

It was so fun to reunite with Lola, Gael, Nix, and Walt soon after the events of the first book. I love the dynamics between this group, and one thing I have to stay stuck out to me was Lola and Nix’s relationship. They were sometimes at odds in the first book, especially before Lola came forward with her secret, but in this book Lola defends Nix from bullying and they are good friends. I loved to see that. Books where two girls are friends instead of enemies is so refreshing and I loved their characters all the more for it. I also noted this as I was reading, but boy do I love creepy carnivals and this was exactly what we got. As a mysterious carnival roles into town, people begin to change and Lola knows something is up. Now, instead of vampires, we have the yin to their yang… werewolves! I love how the creepy dark fantasy element is woven into this story, amidst the mystery of the carnival and those who run it. The mirrors and doppelgängers were also such a creepy tie in! Now that Lola is human instead of vampire, she’s not as durable and invincible as she once was. I liked the inclusion of this because I actually felt like she was having a real adjustment to her new reality. Her friends are also quite supportive. So it made things feel more real with the threats they faced, because this time, Lola didn’t have vampire powers on her side!

Another thing I liked about this sequel was that, while it was nice to have read the first book, you don’t have to. You can still get an idea of what Lola went through before and her history with her new group of friends. I would probably recommend reading it in order just for the experience, but the fact that you don’t have to makes it easier for teen readers who either might forget parts of the before plot or simply haven’t read the first book. I also enjoyed how this book ends with the fact that there is definitely a third book in the series, and more dark magic to uncover.

This book, and so far this series, is a really great entry for teens who likes vampires, werewolves, and other sorts of magical beings, or simply just enjoy a good and twisted ride with a group of friends who are all likable. It’s quick to read and easy to understand, but that doesn’t mean it is void of feeling or depth. All the characters feel unique, from Lola to Gael to Nix and Walt. And the new characters introduced in this book have their own pasts, motivations, and more. It makes for an easy read but one that is memorable at the same time. And hard to turn away from! By the last half of the book I was totally engrossed and I think I spent almost the whole day finishing it. Plus, with how this book ended, I am dying to read the next one. Cliffhangers might be unpopular to some but this one had me hooked and read to keep reading.

There are a few tropes here and there that gave me Twilight feels, which I don’t think are totally necessary in the book (I think Lola doesn’t need the push pull of anyone, Gael or Chann alike, but I guess I was glad she said she was taking time to figure out being human first), however, there could be some teenagers that really like that.

This series is the kind that will appeal to teens mostly but adults too. I know it appeals to me! It’s neatly YA and let’s itself be that way, and I appreciate that in series because it feels very accessible for all sorts of readers. I’ve enjoyed my time with both of the books so far and I’m very excited to keep reading the series - and this author!

This was a strong sequel for the Well of Souls, it had that element that I was looking for from this world and the writing style of Cordelia Kelly. The characters were written well and had that element that I was looking for and continued to feel like they were supposed to in this world. I enjoyed the plot of the book and getting into this world. I'm excited to read more from Cordelia Kelly and can't wait for more.

The Carnival of Fools by Cordelia Kelly centers on Lola, a teenager trying to balance a fairly normal life with the heavy weight of a vampire past and haunting visions that refuse to go away. Just as she’s trying to find some peace, a mysterious carnival pitches its tents on Duchesne Island. At first, it seems like a fun distraction with dazzling lights and hypnotic music, but soon Lola realizes something much darker lurks beneath the surface.

The carnival’s ringmaster is magnetic and creepy all at once, and Lola’s friends start acting strange like they’re caught in the carnival’s spell. With her visions growing worse, Lola knows she has to figure out what’s really going on before the carnival’s sinister influence takes full control. The twist? Her own connection to the Otherworld might be the key to stopping the nightmare.

What really makes this story pop is the atmosphere Kelly creates. The carnival feels alive, full of wonder, but also a little bit dangerous. There’s this constant tension between the glittering magic and the dark secrets lurking just out of sight. Plus, Lola’s journey is so relatable. She’s trying to hold onto her friendships and her identity even when everything around her feels like it’s slipping away.

Kelly’s writing is smooth and engaging, with a pacing that mixes suspense and emotional moments just right for YA readers. The themes of friendship, courage, and confronting your past are woven into the paranormal elements naturally, making the story feel both thrilling and heartfelt.

⚡️Thank you Brown Cat Press and Cordelia Kelly for sharing this book with me!

I honestly didn’t expect to love this as much as I did - especially since I hadn’t read the first book in the series yet. But wow, what a ride! The cover immediately caught my eye, and I’m so glad I decided to take a chance on it.

Even coming into the series mid-way, it was surprisingly easy to follow. The writing is accessible, the pacing is on point, and I never once felt confused or disconnected from the characters or story. It pulled me in from the beginning and only got better as things unraveled.

What stood out most to me was how visual everything felt. I love books that allow me to see scenes play out in my head, and this one delivered that in spades. The vibe, the setting, the atmosphere - it was all so vivid and immersive. I couldn’t stop picturing it.

The story has this perfect balance of mystery, tension, and heart. I found myself flipping through pages faster and faster as I got closer to the end. It’s one of those books where you think, “Just one more chapter…” and suddenly you’re done.

I honestly didn’t think I’d get so into it, but by the end I was fully invested. I went and bought the first book right after finishing because I need more of this world. Definitely excited to see where the story goes next.

If you're into YA books with a spooky twist and strong visuals, this one’s worth checking out - even if you haven’t read the first!

Thank you so much for the e-ARC of The carnival of fools, I am immensely grateful I was able to read and review this for you.
Book two in the series Port of lost souls had a really enchanting premise but disappointing execution in my opinion.

I thought it had a great start and scenery set up but many more things bothered me in this one as opposed to the first in the series - The well of souls. I still had a good time but I was struggling finishing it even though it is very easy to read.

Here are the key points I wanted to talk about:
1. There's a lot more grammatical errors in this book that were overlooked and made me double read a lot of the sentences.
2. The dialogue in a lot of scenes seemed forced for the story and unlike characters + not mentioned they were under any influence at the time if that was the case.
3. Relationship dynamics were getting really annoying, I hated the ending dialogue.
4. Lola's thoughts could be more detailed and explained better, it felt very immature and 2010's rom-com. She reads like a teenage girl one time and a long living creature the next.
5. The conversation between Lola and Nix at the carnival before the big reveal didn't make any sense. I understand this is YA but that wasn't the place or time.
6. The plot twists were predictable.

I hope this is as spoiler free as can be. I enjoyed the mention of Circe and many side characters, who are still dear to my heart. The librarian is also a fun new character I would love to read a separate story about.

Not everything is as it appears at this Carnival!

Even though I have not read the first book in this series, I had no problems with this one. I picked up pretty quickly who the characters were and how they fit into Lola’s life. Now that Lola is no longer a vampire, but a normal human teenager, she wants to experience everything so when a carnival comes to Duchesne Island, she decides to go, along with her friends. While there, Lola can sense that things are not as they appear and there is some sort of supernatural events occurring. This is a very interesting story, especially considering it’s a young adult. The writing style fits so well and I really love Lola’s character as she tries to adjust to her new life. The sense of friendship is very strong in this story too. I can’t wait to see what happens to Lola and her friends in the next book of the Port of Lost Souls Series.

I have been desperately waiting for a return to the world of Port Despardoux after the stunning ending of Book 1, and "The Carnival of Fools" absolutely delivered on the promise of a thrilling, highly emotional sequel!

The excitement starts the moment that eerie, dazzling carnival rolls into town. Cordelia Kelly masterfully creates a setting that is equal parts gorgeous and sinister, making my skin crawl with every turn of the page. You can feel the danger and the dark magic seeping into the atmosphere.

However, what truly resonated with me in this instalment was the heart-wrenching emotional struggle of Lola. Watching her fight to live a normal life while being tormented by visions, and then having to face a threat that puts her beloved, hard-won friendships in danger - it was everything. Her isolation as her friends fall under the carnival's spell was genuinely frustrating (in the best, most gripping way!), making me want to jump into the book and warn them myself!

This is a dark, mesmerising, and incredibly fast-paced YA fantasy adventure. While I felt the pace slowed slightly in the middle before the climactic rush, the sheer emotional stakes, the fantastic villain, and Lola's incredible journey of strength make this an essential, four-star follow-up. A must-read for fans of the first book!

A flashy setting turned spooky, almost a Goosebumps adventure, except the main character used to be a vampire.. The Carnival is eerie yet full of bright life with characters that don’t make me want to claw my face off. While a sequel, it is easy to follow and catch up on. Honestly deserves more buzz than this series is getting- one of the better YA novels I have read in a while. That being said, it does fall victim to the tropes of YA that need to die in a fiery pit [Gael over Chaun easily, not going to listen to me are you? Dammit!] took me right out of it, I don’t mind the subplot of adjustment after centuries of otherworldlyness but that and a few other elements i didn’t like took me out of it. Love Fayre, though. Wanted more of her story.

Happy release day to Carnival of Fools by Cordelia Kelly - this the second in the Port of Lost Souls series, a YA Fantasy series. It surrounds the island with lots of magic rooted in it that attracts other-worldly beings.

In the first book, we follow Lola, a treasure hunting vampire who is looking for the ultimate treasure, while making friends and navigating teen issues, and being hunted!

Now, in our second book, Lola is trying to escape her past and settle in to life on the island, when a dark carnival comes to town - she has visions, everyone seems under a spell except her and things are getting more sinister as the full moon approaches!

I enjoyed the second book as much as the first - I love a Carnival setting and there is some relationship tests that are added in to layer the relationships in the book! Overall a fun and quick read!

I honestly chose this book based on its cover. It just LOOKS good and I’m glad the cover didn’t lead me astray!

The first thing that comes to mind in regards to YA & vampires is Twilight, which has its place, but this book is nothing like that. This book is fun with well-written characters that actually have personality. I feel like the author takes intriguing elements—the setting, the characters, the plot, etc. and truly melds them into an interesting narrative. Everything has a purpose & she doesn’t rely solely on any one aspect to make up for others being unfinished.

After reading this book, I absolutely want to read the first one in the series (and any more that might come along in the future).

I appreciate BookSirens providing me with this ARC and the opportunity to voluntarily post this review.

I have to say, I wasn't exactly sure of what I was getting myself into when I began reading this book.

The cover intrigued me greatly as well as the mentions of a carnival mainly because I've read Caraval and enjoyed that book as much as this one, so it was right up my alley.

I enjoyed the diversity of the characters as well as the paranormal aspect of it and how vital each power was to the plot. The writing style is similar to Stephanie Garbers as well as Alex Aster, which was surprising yet pleasant.

The while plot was very well thought, and I was quite upset that it ended on a cliffhanger, but I am very excited to read the next one!
Do keep in mind that I received this book for free but that fact had no impact on my rating :)

The synopsis of the book drew me in immediately and I knew I couldn’t pass this one up. I did not read the first book in the series yet, but this was well written with plenty of the back story to catch you up, that I felt like I had. I will definitely go back and read it soon though.

Cliffhangers are such a drag, but also exciting because there’s more coming in a world that I loved being immersed in.
This was my first book by Cordelia Kelly and I really enjoyed it. I look forward to what comes next from her and this series as Lola is a great main character.

I received an ARC copy of this book. Thank you 😊

The arrival of a mysterious carnival on Duchesne Island introduces a deliciously eerie atmosphere. The vivid descriptions of hypnotic lights and enchanting music contrast beautifully with the creeping dread that something is terribly wrong beneath the surface. The carnival setting is one of the book’s standout features, rich in both wonder and menace, with the enigmatic ringmaster serving as a particularly memorable antagonist.

I took my time reading this. It is part of a series however you do not need to read Book One in order to read this one.

The Carnival of Fools, the second book in The Port of Lost Souls series, is an accomplished novel in its own right. The crew from the first book is back and before you know it, you find yourself rooting for them, especially - but not only - for the newly human Lola who’s dealing with all the challenges a young human must face, plus with her vampire past. This is another pageturner, but it’s not only about the plot. The “old” characters have grown to my heart and the new ones are a mystery waiting to be deciphered. And oh, the setting! This mysterious island where a special tree grows… Once again, Kelly takes the reader on a ride that’s not easy to forget.

I loved the way that Carnival of Fools was written, the mystery and intrigue was well laid out. I loved the connection I had with Lola, how she felt disconnected from her friends because of her transformation, she didn't feel right in her skin. I loved all the little twists and turns Cordelia wrote into this book, and I am anxiously awaiting for book 3 to be written so I can follow along on Lola's next great adventure.

This was exactly what book two needed to be. The characters stayed true to themselves, and the mystery was just as good. I would recommend it to my friends and family. I would definitely continue with this series. That ending has to lead to more.

I didn't know this was a sequel when I picked the book up. So, I went in without a full deck here.

That being said, you can sort of puzzle out what happened in the first book though it's not explicitly stated per say.

This is a fun, carnival-themed read where a motley crew fights a big bad. The characters are mostly likeable, which helps keep you interested. I think this will be a fun read for those between middle grade and YA books

It was amazing book. The book could be read by itself, you can read the Wells of Souls first. I would suggest reading in order like the author wrote them. The book was an easy read and super interesting. I would highly recommend this book if you love adventure books. Cordelia Kelly attention to details was very nice and made it easy to imagine what was going on in the story. I can not wait to see what adventures lie ahead.
