Unanswered questions ...
My name is Charlotte Locke, and I’m on a mission to capture my nemesis. As an analyst for Section 47, a secret spy organization, I use my magical form of synesthesia to track down paramortal criminals, but one villain keeps eluding me—Henrika Hyde.
Henrika claims to have answers about my father’s death on a Section 47 mission years ago, and she has also created a horrific new weapon capable of killing even the strongest paramortals, which makes her my number one target. Helping me is Desmond Percy, a powerful galvanist who is my partner both inside and outside Section 47.
Desmond wants to take Henrika down just as badly as I do, but our mission quickly goes sideways, and soon we’re surrounded by enemies on all sides with no idea whom we can truly trust.
A troubling future ...
The name Desmond Percy is well known inside Section 47, since I’m one of the organization’s top cleaners, aka assassins. Charlotte Locke and I have been tracking Henrika Hyde for months, and when we finally get a lead on her location, we jump at the chance to take down the weapons maker once and for all.
I’m determined to help Charlotte get the answers she is so desperately seeking, as well as taking my revenge on Henrika for killing my best friend.
But the deeper Charlotte and I dig into Henrika and her murky motives, the more dangerous our mission becomes. Henrika is playing her own spy game, and Charlotte and I are just the pawns she is using to achieve her own evil ends—caught up in a deadly legacy of treachery.
Jennifer Estep is a New York Times, USA Today, and internationally bestselling author who prowls the streets of her imagination in search of her next fantasy idea.
Jennifer is the author of the Elemental Assassin, Section 47, Galactic Bonds, Crown of Shards, Gargoyle Queen, and other fantasy series. She has written more than 40 books, along with numerous novellas and stories.
In her spare time, Jennifer enjoys hanging out with friends and family, doing yoga, and reading fantasy and romance books. She also watches way too much TV and loves all things related to superheroes.
Although I think a few fewer pages would have made for a more tense pace, Desmond and Charlotte do not disappoint this time either, but the usual elusive Henrika is an increasingly cumbersome presence. Meanwhile, both Joan and Gabriel are carving out roles for themselves that seem a little different from those of background figures. Perhaps there will even be books dedicated to them, I hope, as I hope we don't have to wait another two years for the fourth volume of this series. At the beginning, I could hardly remember anything...

A Touch of Treachery is the Third installment in author Jennifer Estep's Section 4 series. A Touch of Treachery picks up with Charlotte, an analyst for Section 47, who wields a magical form of synesthesia that allows her to sense danger and uncover lies, trying to find a way to finally beat her nemesis. Her primary target is Henrika Hyde, a cunning and elusive villain who claims to hold secrets about Charlotte’s father’s death on a Section 47 mission years ago.
I loved the first book in this series and really liked the second book. Unfortunately, I found this third book to be a bit of a disappointment.
If I were to choose one word to describe this story it would be "overblown". There was too much of extraneous components which didn't do anything to progress the main plot. All the family dramas, the emotional angst between various characters the whinging about the machinations within Section 47 it all just felt annoying to me rather than engaging which is, I'm sure what the author intended it to come across as.
The first two books were so good, sharp, fast pacing, plot development that flowed and much less of the emotional rigamaroles so I'm hoping future books (which the afterword said are planned) will be closer to the earlier installments. I will consider reading them to see what happens, but this one really dragged and I was pleased - but not satisfied - to get to the ending of this one.
In the third instalment of the Section 47 series, Charlotte and Desmond are still on the trail of Henrietta, attempting both to halt her crimes and uncover the traitors within their own organisation. Unfortunately, the continuation of the Henrietta arc left me frustrated rather than thrilled. The narrative feels stretched, and instead of resolution, we get more betrayals and another exposed enemy—further highlighting how surprisingly lax Section 47 seems to be in its own internal security.
One of the greatest disappointments is Desmond. He’s repeatedly described as one of the best “cleaners,” yet his performance in hand-to-hand combat and fight scenes was underwhelming. I expected sharper, more impressive sequences from someone with his reputation.
Meanwhile, Charlotte and Desmond’s banter, once witty, has become stale. Their recurring jokes about smoothies and pastries feel recycled rather than charming, adding little freshness to the story.
The book concludes with Henrietta still at large, another betrayal unveiled, and an overall sense of treading water rather than progressing the series. What once promised intrigue and suspense is starting to feel repetitive and thin. For me, A Touch of Treachery was not as engaging as earlier entries, and I’m no longer sure I want to continue with the series.
This was an interesting book. Charlotte and Desmond got answers to things they have been wondering for a while, but it was so very messy to get those answers. And they had an unexpected ally to help them, one who usually is a foe. These answers also had the chance of splitting the couple up. So while it was great to get answers, it was more than a little crazy. It will be interesting to see what happens next, for the couple and for Section 47.
Sci-fi Action flick fans will thrill in the newest addition to the Section 47 series. We learn more about Desmond and Charlotte's history as key players from the past show up. We also are treated to Darling Daddy, Desmond's powerful father. No surprise that his father is arrogant and difficult. Charlotte has her hands full as she goes on a mission and it explodes.

4.25stars-A TOUCH OF TREACHERY is the third instalment in Jennifer Estep’s contemporary adult SECTION 47 paranormal, urban fantasy series focusing on diner owner / paramortal analyst for Section 47 Charlotte Locke, and assassin/cleaner Desmond Percy. A TOUCH OF TREACHERY can be read as a stand alone but I recommend reading the series in order for back story and cohesion as there is an ongoing premise throughout.
SOME BACKGROUND: Paramortals make up approximately one percent of the world’s population, and most have hidden their magic from the ‘mortal’ world. Section 47 is a paramortal spy organization whose mission was to gather intelligence to prevent terrorist attacks but found themselves tracking those who use magic to commit their crimes.
Told from dual first person perspectives (Charlotte and Desmond) A TOUCH OF TREACHERY focuses on the investigation into CEO and founder of Hyde Engineering Henrika Hyde, a chemist who has invented a powerful weapon known as Redburn, in her war against the paramortal but at every opportunity, Section 47 agents Charlotte Locke and Desmond Percy find themselves in a losing battle, and our heroine is about to pay the price for the sins of the past. Charlotte and Desmond are both Legacy agents, children of Section 47 operatives, but a target has been placed on Charlotte’s back, and our heroine is determined to follows the clues and reveal the truth. Henrika Hyde is hoping to sell Redburn to the highest bidder, and our couple are last minute invites to the bioweapon auction.
The world building is complex and detailed as Charlotte and Desmond find themselves in a fight for their lives. From auctions to fundraisers, abductions and murder, betrayal and vengeance, Charlotte and Desmond struggle to accept the revelations at face value, in an effort to uncover the truth and the reality of the who, how and why. For fans and followers of the author’s books and series, the similarities to her Elemental Assassin series are numerous and recognizable.
The relationship between Charlotte and Desmond continues to be strong in the face of perceived betrayal and dysfunctional family dynamics. Several agents question the validity of their relationship, and the people in charge are determined to separate and dismantle any future together. The $ex scenes are limited but passionate.
There is a large ensemble cast of powerful, energetic and sometimes questionable secondary and supporting characters including Henrika Hyde; Section 47 agents: liason Joan Samson, Gia Chan and Diego Benito; former Section 47 Agents Gabriel Chase, and Bryce Finkley, and Desmond’s father General Jethro Percy, head of Second 47 Board of Directors.
A TOUCH OF TREACHERY is a story of power and control, secrets and lies, betrayal and vengeance, mistrust and magic, acceptance and love. The fast paced premise is dramatic and edgy; the romance is heartwarming; the characters are determined, desperate and charismatic.
A Touch of Treachery by Jennifer Estep is a Section 47 series. Refresher: Section 47 is a secret government agency that handles paranormal, terrorists, criminals, and have magical abilities. Their job is to gather information to prevent attacks, casualties, as well as to protect the mortal world; especially against those who create dangerous weapons.
Charlotte Locke, our heroine, is an analyst, who is very good at her job analyzing various reports and files to find mistakes, patterns, and anything that looks like threats. Charlotte also has some magical abilities, such as having synesthesia ability to sense danger and detect lies. Charlotte is determined to stop a powerful villain, Henrika Hyde; but importantly she wants answers as to who killed her father. Charlotte knows that Henrika knows the truth, and suspects Jethro Percy as the man who killed him. Percy hates Charlotte, as her father was a Locke; but Desmond Percy is Charlotte’s partner and love interest.
Desmond, our hero, and also a Section 47 Assassin, who is considered one of the best; as he also has powerful Galvanist abilities, which he is able to use the energy around to prevent attacks as well as be able to heal.
Both Charlotte and Desmond are invited to Henrika’s mansion for a party, and they hope she will give them the list that Henrika has hidden, revealing all the names of Section 47. They both attend, trying to make a deal to get the papers; and there are other people attending that are friends of Henrika, who are interested in the weapons that people want. Henrika is playing her own spy game, and being used as pawns, with Desmond being kidnapped, and Charlotte, despite Jethro firing her, she finds a way to save Desmond; with help from Joan and Gabriel.
When Charlotte gets a tip from Henrika, as to the truths about Jethro being part of her father’s death. She puts together all information that will reveal Jethro’s past partnership with Henrika, and revelations will be revealed, leading information about all the terrible things, and money from the Locke family that Jethro stole. This was a legacy that was a touch of Treachery.
What follows is an exciting, action filled, suspenseful story that kept me unable to put the book down. Charlotte was a great heroine, as she was not only smart & savvy, but unbeknownst to others, lethal with a weapon, since she learned from her father. I also loved Desmond, as he was not only a sexy hunk, but also very confident with his ability; and was very much in love with Charlotte. He was the one who needed to stop his father.
A Touch of Treachery is another wonderful addition to this wonderful and intriguing urban fantasy series. A Touch of Treachery was very well written by Jennifer Estep. I loved both Charlotte and Desmond, and look forward to more on them in future books. I suggest you read A Touch of Treachery, as was a great read.
A Touch of Treachery opens a few weeks after the conclusion of the previous adventure, Sugar Plum Spies, with Charlotte and Desmond undercover trying to lure villainous Henrika out into the open. When things go sideways, Section 47 Chairman General Percy, Desmond’s father, comes to the DC headquarters and gives Charlotte a dressing down. But when Henrika invites Charlotte to an exclusive auction for her deadly red burn formula, Percy has little choice but to send the pair into Henrika’s web.
The stakes are raised for Charlotte and Desmond in A Touch of Treachery. The story is extremely exciting; a can’t-put-it-down, edge of your seat kind of adventure. Like Charlotte, I was constantly trying to figure out Henrika’s plans and getting frustrated at being one step behind. The author does a great job of creating suspense, letting it build, and then giving readers something unexpected, or if it’s an expected result, I pumped my fist in satisfaction that I figured it out. Estep masterfully splits up Charlotte and Desmond’s point-of-views by ending each POV with the character in a compromising position or making a big discovery, and then quickly switching to the other MC’s POV.
I loved that A Touch of Treachery wraps up a few subplots, providing satisfaction that the overall story arc is progressing. I also like that Desmond and Charlotte have solidified their relationship and are working nearly seamlessly together. I love that there are a few different bad guys, each with various reasons why they are despicable, all with varying degrees of morality, and even a couple have redeeming qualities.
Narration: The story is shared in the alternating first person POVs of Charlotte and Desmond, with Laser taking the lead on Charlotte’s POVs and Black for Desmond. Overall, the story flows well and the narration is strong. Laser does a great job with Charlotte’s southern accent and seamlessly shifts to other dialects and accents during dialogue. She provides plenty of emotion and modulates her voice to suit a character’s gender, age, and persona.
Black has an Australian accent worthy of a Hemsworth. His voice is deep and sexy. He modifies his voice for gender, age, and dialect/accent to a satisfactory degree. However, often it feels like Black is telling me the story as it’s happening rather than me being in the story with him. He tends to keep his voice even. I don’t mean he’s monotone, but rather he doesn’t accelerate his speech when he’s excited or nervous. He doesn’t slow it down when he’s sad or upset. It’s a very constant cadence within a set parameter of tone. Not bad, just not as emotionally intense.
There are two bonus epilogues, each from a new POV. They are both very short, but there are two different narrators for the change in POVs. Danton reprises his role as Gabriel and Fortgang performs a new POV, Joan. I enjoyed Danton’s deep, gravely voice, but his pacing is slower than the other narrators. Fortgang has a fresh voice for Joan.
I think fans of Estep’s Elemental Assassin series and romantic suspense readers will really enjoy the Section 47 stories, especially A Touch of Treachery which really hits a home run for me.
It’s been a few weeks since the previous adventure (Sugar Plum Spies), and Charlotte and Desmond are still trying to lure villainous Henrika Hyde out into the open. But their new trap fails Section 47 Chairman General Percy (Desmond’s father) arrives and decides to take Charlotte off the case. But when Henrika specifically invites Charlotte to an exclusive charity auction she hosts, Percy has little choice to send her and Desmond, even if he has ulterior motives.
Like the previous books, I was hooked from the very beginning to this adventure. Charlotte and Desmond are a great team and they really show how much they trust each other in this one. The development of their relationship over this series has been fantastic but they really shine in this one. We see complete trust in each other, even over other family members, and it just made for a perfect relationship, on top of a fantastic and action packed story.
Desmond and Charlotte are still tracking down Henrika in this. They are trying to find her lab and shut it down and bring her in, but that doesn’t go as plan. We really see how ahead of the game Henrika is with all the different schemes she has going on and how she uses Charlotte to reveal the truth. Henrika is just a fantastic villain and I really have enjoyed learning more about her and her reasoning behind what she does as this series progressed.
Charlotte also uncovered a huge secret in this, which leads to her finding out what happened to her father and the Mexico mission. I am so glad we finally get to learn about what happened to Jack Locke, but also that we finally get to see the culprit get some of what he deserves, even if it might not last. I will be very curious to see what happens in the next book now that this huge secret has been revealed.
Overall, this was a fantastic and action packed story that I couldn’t stop listening to. I have really loved this series and this world of Section 47. I can’t wait to read the next story to see what will happen next on the hunt for Henrika, especially after the epilogue.
TW: PTSD and flash backs; death, violence, gun violence, knife violence, bombs/explosions, and injuries; kidnapping; torture;
I think it goes without saying that I loved this book. Jennifer Estep is my favorite author, so I can definitely be biased 😆 But it really was good! We haven't had a new book in this series for quite some time, so I was particularly excited about that, especially because urban fantasy remains my favorite genre to this day. And this series is filled with spies, assassins, and a ton of really cool magic! I love it!
Another thing I love is the action. It's actually one of my favorite things about this author's books! The action sequences she writes are always really good! And her books always start with action, so I am always immediately hooked. And then the fight sequence at the end of this book, I was STRESSED, let me tell you. Lol.
I also love all the lovable characters Jennifer Estep brings to life in her books. I immediately fall in love with them, without fail. Lol. Desmond, for example, I forgot how freaking sweet he was. He is just so thoughtful and respectful of Charlotte. May a love like that find me one day 🥹 I literally cannot get over how cute they are together!
But it's not just the romance in this book that I loved. I also really enjoyed the friendships and camaraderie among the characters. Especially the supportive and trusting friendship between Charlotte and Gabriel. And not to mention the banter and budding bromance between Gabriel and Desmond 😆 It's always a fun time. Lol.
I even like the antagonists. Henrika is just such an intriguing, conniving character. In this book, we find out more about her, some backstory and motivations behind her actions. It was interesting. And then there's Jethro Percy, Desmond's dad and superior. I'm calling him an antagonist just for the fact that he's an asshole. Lol. He was such an infuriating character, with how he treated Charlotte and even his own son. But infuriating in a good way. He is not meant to be a likable character, and boy, did I dislike him. Lol.
One thing I have to mention that was a really nice surprise for me was the setting. I don't know what it is about books set in a ski resort-type location, but I am such a sucker for them! Not that I go to ski resorts often—I went once for a 4th-grade field trip, and let me tell you, I am not coordinated enough for skiing. I kid you not, I literally ran into a fence that time 🤣 Anyway, maybe thats why I like this setting so much—because I don’t go to these types of place often (even though we have a ski resort/lodge pretty close to where I live. But in my defense, I am neither coordinated nor outdoorsy for that, sooo 😂). But it’s just a fun time in books. Especially because Desmond and Charlotte were undercover and attending some fancy events at the resort.
This book is called A Touch of Treachery, and let me tell you, there was treachery indeed. And it was wild! In the end, when all the revelations and confessions came to light, there was one character I felt really bad for because they did not deserve this heinous betrayal. But the story leading up to this was really good! The twists and turns were so well done! I cannot wait for the next book in the series!
Treachery abounds in this thrilling hunt for a master villain that keeps slipping through the cracks.
I absolutely love Charlotte and Desmond. They are one of my favourite book couples ever. Individually, they are smart and dedicated, and they use their abilities effectively and efficiently. It is a pleasure to see them in their natural element. Together, they are pure magic.
Henrika felt a bit like a cartoon villain at times, twirling her metaphorical mustache, which contributed to the fun in this story. But she was undeniably diabolical, and a formidable and unpredictable opponent. This book revealed more details about her, making her more complex and I (gasp) think I actually liked her (just a little bit).
The spectacular ending came about with a few major unexpected twists. I had my heart in my throat pretty much the entire time. There were also a few bonus epilogues that added to the sweet satisfaction of a job well done and the vague hints of future intrigue. I cannot wait for the next adventure.
I can highly recommend this series if you like spy thrillers with spicy romance in an urban fantasy setting. It is best to read the books in order, as they establish the characters and the world building.
Thank you to the author for providing me with a copy. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
Jennifer Estep returns with a new book in the SECTION 47 series, which has Charlotte Locke and Desmond Percy drawn into the web of international criminal Henrika Hyde, who carries secrets capable of destroying them both.
As with all of Estep’s novels, it was great to return to fun characters and just strap in for an adventure. This iteration of SECTION 47 focused on the more personal element, particularly the relationship between Desmond and his father. Both Charlotte and Desmond are easy to enjoy, intelligent and cunning as they navigate the web Henrika has woven for them. The characters all find themselves tied to each other in different ways, so it was rewarding to see how challenging some of those relationships could be.
All of Estep’s charm is on full display, with easy to read writing, action, and a dash of spice. The story took some interesting twists and I think the ending set up another fun adventure. Much of this book felt like relationships rather than a core element of the series, but I was still entertained. The series is light-hearted and fun enough for casual weekend reading, and sometimes that’s all you need!
3.5 stars I like this series but the novella worked better than the full length. And there were several annoying parts that threw me out of the story, with the main ones being: - everyone always blaming Charlotte for 'failing' the mission. As I understand it she is the less experienced field agent so one would think failure to capture a genius supervillain the section has been after for years wouldn't rest on her shoulders. Sure I get why the General blames her, but Kian does as well, and the others while less harsh also seem to think she is at fault. - That a whole super secret spy agency can't find a public figure like Henrika and that she seems to run rings around every body including our supposed super smart heroine Char. - The foreshadowed romance between Gabe & Joan. It feels forced and icky. Gabe is awesome and mysterious. Leave him that way.
I love Charlotte and Desmond and I will say I did figure out one of the twists very early on in a small way. But I still enjoyed this. I listened to it all the way through in one day and was not disappointed. I like that this was very action packed and that the romance took a back seat. They're establishing themselves as a solid copy and are growing into it as opposed to fighting and having some grand reveal that means one betrayed the other. God I'm tired of that being used in books. I instead got a grand adventure and a return to teo of my favourite characters. I also like that we're getting more on Gabriel. He is great too and would love to see more of him in the next one. I love Jennifer's books and am eager to read anything she writes at this point.
It was a lot better than the last as it had a lot of exciting things going on and Desmonds and Charlottes relationship was less cheesy. I also really liked that we got to know Desmonds father we heard so much about and that Charlotte figured out what happened to her father. Henrika Hyde tropping the hints was a nice bonus - it made her more human - and I liked how she and Charlotte had mutural respect for the others work. Her bonus chapter made we wonder whether she might turn good one day and be friends with Charlotte? (But i guess thats more something to dream about).
What I didn’t like though: the author was repeating (yes again) all the infos about Section 47 and Charlotte and Desmonds background. It got a bit annoying because I‘ve heard that twice now - i know it by now…
Henrika invites Charlotte and Desmond to a charity gala to bid on the formula.
What I enjoyed most: * Henrika is becoming my favorite character. She is so smart and always a few steps ahead of everyone else. Unfortunate that she is developing awful weapons. * Wasn't surprised by the revelations at the end, there had been lots of hints dropped (wonder why Charlotte didn't pick up on it sooner). * As always, Gabriel is amazing and needs more exposure
What could have been better: * This book dragged more than the previous ones *
It's a case of spy vs. spy as Charlotte and Desmond battle Henrika Hyde, and lose. This causes the head of Section 47 to demote Charlotte, yet she is never down for long. And more than a touch of treachery...
There's non-stop action (sound effects, too) and double crosses galore, which kept this reader turning the pages. Will Charlotte find out about her father's death? Will Desmond and Charlotte finally get Henrika, or will General Percy (AKA Desmond's father) finally fire of Charlotte?
Having read the previous novels in the series, this reader is ready for more. Loved the extra chapters (and the Kitty Boodle reference, too). Some what-the-tuck trends (winks, smirks mostly).
An action-packed suspense with mystery, betrayal, cool magic, witty quips, and more! Charlotte and Desmond make a great couple and work well as a team. The storyline was constant with action and banter and twists and turns to keep it interesting and carried from beginning to end. The camaraderie, trust, and charisma of the supporting characters folded into the story perfectly and helped balance out the story. Another fun addition to the Section 47 series.
This is the 3rd Section 47 book and the stories just build and get better and better. Desmond and Charlotte work fantastically together and this book does not disappoint! I cannot wait for the next book and to see what happens next, not only with Desmond and Charlotte, but with Gabriel and Joan, and Evelyn as she her role as Maestro is revealed. Another great book Ms. Estep!
Oh. My. God. A Touch of Treachery, book three of the Section 47 urban fantasy series, was phenomenal. Our characters, Desmond and Charlotte, are equally strong and each has their own unique psychic abilities. Well, all of the Section 47 agents do. If you enjoy a spy thriller with action, missions, blowing things up, and trying to outwit the enemies, pick up this book. You can read this without reading the first two, but you’ll get so more if you do. Plot ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Spice 🔥
I’ve read the entire series of section 47. I was a little disappointed in book number three. Since section 47 it’s supposed to be full of spies. The fact that there is this big reveal at the end of the book that should have been obvious to the people in charge was somewhat ridiculous in my opinion. I want to continue the series. However, Desmond being the ultimate spy and assassin, but he is the person that is always in trouble, is again somewhat ridiculous.
Jennifer Estep’s first book in each series comes off STRONG and compelling, but each subsequent book in every series is less and less so. I adored the characters and dynamics in the first Section 47 book but struggled through this one, noting several areas where a lack of research was obvious, feeling like the entire book was “telling” not “showing”, and skipping through an oddly shoehorned graphic sex chapter (?) at the end.
I would love fewer yearly books from this author with higher quality, but I’m beginning to wonder if the current books are worth the time.
This was a great read going into the winter months. It has a mountain ski resort, snowy atmosphere, and enough action and suspense to keep me flipping through the pages while staying toasty under a blanket on the couch. I’ve always been a bit of a Die-Hard-is-a-Christmas-movie kind of girl, and this series fits right in with that. Sure, there’s snow and holiday vibes, but also, stuff explodes. Five stars!
This book is a fantastic read and a great addition to this series. This book is going to grab you within a few pages and you will find yourself hooked and not able to stop. It moves along at a really great pace making for an easy and enjoyable read. These characters are awesome and you will love them. . This book will not disappoint and is a must read.
Jennifer Estep is a fave, her attention to detail (especially food) & her bright, brave, & witty female protagonists are a delight. This Section 47 offering is no exception, Charlotte & Desmond continue the hunt for the big bad with help from their friends (& enemies). Charlotte finally gets some answers about her dad’s death while Desmond has to face some hard facts about his.
This is a good addition to the series and included the action and growth expected from this author. It has strong , smart, mature characters that focus on the task at hand and each other. It lost a star for the easy to figure lair. It took the characters way too long to figure it out.
This series have all the right components for a great actions story, like this last installment: a bit of paranormal add a bit of spy story, a bit of love story and so much actions that you don't have time to stop thinking. I enjoyable reading.
Section 47 is not my favorite Estep series, but anything written by Jennifer Estep is better than most of what is out there.
Charlotte and Desmond continue on their mission to capture the arms dealer Henrika Hyde using all of their magical abilities and cool spy gadgets in the chase.
