Ouroboros is a memoir that follows a story from the perspective of a girl who felt caught in the destructive cycle of her family’s drug and alcohol abuse. Erica was constantly feeling such a strong sense of desperation to get out and escape the chaos she seemed to have inherited, all while craving nothing more than for her family to be whole and happy. She struggled with the complex emotions that being the child of two addicts brought as she tried to navigate the different stages of her life. She had this desperate hope that things wouldn’t be chaotic forever and earnestly wanted to be kind, despite being shown anger and violence. There was a constant battle of trying to be better than the people who raised her and learn from their mistakes, while not even realizing that she was making her own. It’s a story of both hope and despair.
This book also features 30 poems that tell her story in a different form and express feelings in a way that many may relate to.
I absolutely loved this book! It was an easy read, but still full of so much emotion and heartache. Be ready to cry!! This world is already so confusing for a young girl, but it is only made more confusing when you love someone battling with addiction. The innocent perspective from a child only makes your heartache more. I can’t how many times I wanted to jump into the pages and give her a hug.
