He thought he knew everything about his husband's murder. He was wrong.
Detective Josiah Raine witnessed his husband's brutal murder seven years ago. He was there that blood-soaked night, and he knows what happened. The murderer is long-since dead. The case closed.
But now, Josiah is about to discover a devastating revelation that will drag him back into the darkness he's fought so desperately to escape. Will it shatter his life or help him build a new one?
“I was totally drawn in from the beginning as Xanthe is the master of plots, mystery and intrigue, weaving and twisting and taking you in so deep that you just need more.” ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Reader Review of Book One. _________________________________________________________________________________

Thank you to Book Sirens and author Xanthe Walter for the opportunity to read this ARC for book 2! 💕
I was absolutely obsessed with the first book in this series and couldn't wait to continue, and book 2 did not disappoint!!
Being that the overall plot is a murder mystery, obviously the vibes are not all that cheerful. But this felt even darker as you dive into the main characters' histories some more and witness the grief, cruelty, and scarring moments that both of them have experienced in their past.
The time jumps were delivered so perfectly, where I'm emotionally crushed in one chapter, but then given a short reprieve in the next as Alex and Josiah become closer and find a way to trust and heal one another. I truly love their characters, and I'm both excited and scared to see where their story is going to lead next!
I also can't forget George Tyler, the villainous character in book 2. He may be one of my most hated characters I have ever read, and not because he wasn't written well! On the contrary, the author wrote him in such a way that makes me loathe him with every fiber of my being, a character that I don't wish to be brought to justice but be given a slow and painful death. He made the story tough to read at times, but damn does he make for a fantastic villain!
This series is now 2 for 2 with 5 🌟 ratings from me! I'll be counting down the days for book 3!!

After practically inhaling Crocodile Tears, the first book in Xanthe Walter’s dystopian Dark Water series, I’ve been on tenterhooks waiting for the release of the second, which promised devastating revelations, shattering truths, new purpose - and a continuation of the uneasy but emotionally charged relationship being forged between investigator Josiah Raine and indentured servant (IS or ‘indie’) Alexander Lytton.
This is a four book series in which the books absolutely must be read in order – there will be spoilers for book one in this review.
Ghost Eye opens more or less where Crocodile Tears left off. In 2088, past Alex has just discovered the extent to which he’s been manipulated and cruelly betrayed by his father’s rival, George Tyler, and is facing a future in which the only certainties are servitude and degradation. In the present – 2095 - Josiah has been given no alternative but to take Alex as his IS on a temporary basis in order to prevent his being fed into a complex legal system which will make it impossible for him to be of any use in the investigation into the murder of Elliot Dacre, Alex’s houder (owner).
As in Crocodile Tears, we move back and forth in time, with the present day storyline focusing more on the development of the relationship between Alex and Josiah and the past concentraing mainly on what happens to Alex in his first months of servitude. It’s not pretty; Tyler is bitter, cruel, vindictive and out for revenge, and the author doesn’t sugar-coat any aspect of Alex’s life at this point. There are some disturbing scenes of sexual assault and violence on the page; Tyler is intent on breaking Alex’s spirit and on his total humiliation, and will resort to pretty much anything in order to get what he wants. Alex is equally determined to fight back, to preserve something of himself behind the polished but empty and acquiescent shell Tyler wants to turn him into. But it’s not easy, and he comes close to losing himself more than once.
In the present-day story, Josiah is becoming more and more certain that Alex knows something that is key to the investigation, but that, despite his desire to find out who killed Dacre, he’s holding it back for reasons that Josiah can’t yet fathom. In this book, we find out why; Alex has been waiting until he can be sure he can completely trust Josiah with some devastating and damaging truths, and that he is indeed the man Alex hoped he would be, one with the skill, intelligence and ruthless determination to pursue the truth and to get justice for someone Alex cared about, no matter the risk to his own life and reputation.
I’m not going to say any more about the plot, which is again, utterly compelling and superbly constructed. A lot of time is devoted to Alex’s growth in this story; in the previous one, he was a lonely, lost and immature young man who did some seriously stupid and hurtful things, but who was not, at heart, a bad person. The situation he’s now in – facing life as a servant who is totally subject to his owner’s cruelties and depravity, regardless of what the law says – makes him grow up pretty fast as he looks back and admits how gullible and selfish he’d been, and how wilfully blind he’d been to the world around him. What happens to him is horrific, and the physical and emotional pain of what he goes through are written with a brutal honesty that can be hard to read - but even though he comes close to giving up a few times, his resiliance shines through and later events ensure his determination to resist will not die.
Josiah’s journey in this story is just as impactful, as we further unravel the mystery of Peter’s death and get a closer look at the intensity of the grief and guilt Josiah has been carrying for the past seven years. He's learned to live with it – but for some reason, Alex’s arrival into his life has brought everything closer to the surface, and he doesn’t know why.
I had high expectations for Ghost Eye, and I’m happy to say they were met. The worldbuilding is terrific, and the serious hardships faced by so many of the ‘ordinary’ people, and the corruption that governs so many aspects of life – especially the IS system – are not shied away from. I enjoyed the slow-building trust between Josiah and Alex; there’s been something sparking between them from the beginning, and that’s now developing into something more, something filled with tension and longing and a slow-burning intensity that is really compelling.
I read both Crocodile Tears and Ghost Eye with the kind of gut-churning anticipation that has me constantly on the edge of my seat – but I love when an author can get me so invested in a story and characters that I can’t bear to put a book down, regardless of how tough things are getting for them. I can only take so many low-angst, fluffy-bunny romances, and this level of angst, heartbreak and clever plotty-ness is right up my alley. I know that isn’t to everyone’s taste, but if you like your romance to have high-stakes and a bit of an edge, the Dark Water series is absolutely worth checking out.
Note: as in book one, there is a cliffhanger ending in both timelines – book three, The Lost Zone, is due for publication on 29th July, so there isn’t too long to wait to find out what happens next.
Not only does he fall in love with the leading suspect he now got honnypotted into solving another case?! This is the 2nd book, days and weeks have past and he and he no other suspects and this is his only case we know of?! The world building and characters are great but God is he a terrible detective. This book is very Monte Cristo, tones of revenge and playing the long game( really long game) but the detective-work can use some more work.
The second volume still delivers, still keeps me hooked. But I start to find problem with the slow pacing. Too many flashbacks, but not much happening in the current timeline and the murder investigation. I wish the author would condense the 4 books in the series into 3, or even 2 books, doing away with all the lengthy flashbacks, especially the torturous scenes. And the big plot twist the author promises for the second volume? It’s actually a letdown, I could see it kilometers away, too obvious to guess. And it’s not that big, or course-changing in any way.
However, my interest in the MCs, the world-building and the murder plot will keep me coming back to this series despite its flaws.
2,5 stars: So I can only give half a review yet, but I have to say that I am struggling to finish the book. The constant flashbacks to the past of the two main characters, mostly the one of the detective, just doesn’t really interest me that much and the I am basically skipping a lot of text to get ahead. I’m kind of invested in Alex, the main and only suspect so far, but I think that this story would have benefitted from being told in one book and leaving out a lot of unnecessary information. Like when the detective is at home and gets all these phone calls from his friends and colleagues and they all warn him about the suspect (Alex) and the recap his past in the phone calls ??? Really??? This could have been handled better and been a lot shorter. I see all these really high reviews, I don’t know how honest they are. The building of the dystopian world is quite good, I have to give it that… well I will be ploughing on and hope it will get better and the story will finally get going.
'Ghost Eye' is the 2nd book in the 'Dark Water' series by Xanthe Walter, following 'Crocodile Tears'. If you are not familiar with Xanthe Walter's work, you should check her out. She writes in such a way that you become part of the world right along with her characters. And 'Dark Waters' is proving to be a totally immersive story that will not release me. I am haunted by Alex, Josiah, as well as Peter (can you fall in love with a ghost? Cause I totally am in love with Peter!), Soliage, and others you will meet. Even the bad guys like George Tyler (boo) and kind of bad ones like Fatso, etc draw you in.
In this book, we follow both Josiah and Alex through their pasts and present lives as they intersect and weave in and out of different players. We meet Peter, Soliage, George Tayler, and various others, and learn more about what happened before Elliot was murdered. No. We don't find out who murdered him. (which is killing me, btw!) Xanthe gives us plenty of suspects, but I feel like she is just toying with me. When I 'think I have figured out something or someone, she changes direction. I love an author who makes you use your mind!
I liked seeing how Alex grows. In 'Crocodile Tears', we meet a young and arrogant Alex. He isn't evil, just selfish and immature. Bad things happen, and in 'Ghost Eye' we see how his past affects not only HIS future, but Peter's and everyone around them. The same goes for Josiah. Both of these individuals have endured a great deal of hardship to reach their current positions in life. How they react and move forward today has a lot to do with what happened in the past. So. If you haven't read the first book of the series, 'Crocodile Tears', you definitely want to do that before reading this one.
It is so hard not to say more, but I don't want to ruin the book for you by inadvertently sharing something that will ruin your enjoyment (or horror/shock/broken heart) of the books.
Just. Go read it. PLEASE,
However, heed Xanthe's trigger warnings at the beginning. They are not there to titillate. Things get real in this installment. Really real. Also, I went through at least three boxes of tissues. So, have some ready!!! Oh, and be ready to want Fish and Chips!
This is an excellent installment full of twists and turns and, yeah, a cliffhanger. BUT Book three will be released on 29th July, with book four coming out on September 9th. So we don't have to wait too long for closure.
BTW, 'Ghost Eye' is not available until July 1st. I received an advance copy to read and review. Go, preorder it so you have it the day it drops. You do NOT want to miss this one!
Reading chronologically was much better, I could enjoy both (the three) timelines more. I think the flashbacks explained well how Peter’s mission worked and what role Joe played in making it better. Then when it was time to say goodbye, I suffered, but I was glad Joe was finally able to let go. And that “Goodbye, my love” almost made me forgive the author for killing the best character in this story. Almost. Now that Peter’s dead (💔), I guess the next book won’t have more flashbacks, right?… RIGHT?
I wasn’t looking forward to Alex’s pov, but this time it was my favorite one. This was the dark side of the story. We see him hurting mentally but also physically until he breaks, and then finds his purpose, something that gives him not strength but patience until it is time…
I didn’t like what became of Tyler in the 1st book, but now he’s the character I want to see the most. Look, if we’re gonna have a telenovela villain, then at least I, as a Mexican, demand the full package, and that’s exactly what we got here! Talk about a fragile ego, unnecessary eccentricities and power disguised as intelligence. The kind of villain I want to know every move of so that when he finally meets his downfall I’ll be watching with popcorn.
The present was the worst part this time. Nothing really happened. And it’s still been only, what, like four days? The only highlights were Peter’s overdue rest and Tyler meeting Joe. That was the best part.
I want to read the next book. We’re going to Belvedere in the past and facing an ego-wounded Tyler who’ll very likely uncover Joe’s secrets in the present. Bring it on! I can’t wait 😈["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>
This story of Joe & Alex starting in Crocodile Tears has stayed with me & I was thrilled to get an advanced copy of Ghost Eye! The slow burn of Joe & Alex does heat up in this book! 🙌🏻 There were definitely moments of questions answered & twists I maybe should have, but didn’t see coming! (I had such a strong reaction in the middle of the night reading that my husband woke up and I just had to try to explain it!)
I’ll admit, there were a lot of flashbacks in this book that seemed longer than in book 1. And every time I was slightly disappointed, because I was wanting to hear about Joe and Alex’s relationship. However, once I was into the flashback, I was just as captivated and we really do need to have all that background to understand where the characters are & and how they got to be who they are. We learn to care about those characters from the past too like Peter, Solange, Liz, & Ted. It’s all woven so well, emotionally relevant, & important to the plot.
This was probably a 4.5 for me, but I’m still shipping Joe & Alex so hard & can’t wait for book 3 coming out in July & book 4 in September! So many more twists, turns, secrets, spice & hopefully love to come! Grab them on KU as soon as you can!
Edge-of-your-seat stuff from start to finish -- which, you MUST read book 1 first, nothing will make sense otherwise -- and it could be I'm just croc-pilled at this point, but the writing seemed more confident, too. And even though I suspected the rough outline of what would befall one of the characters, the way it tied into the overall story was really affecting and well done. Seriously, though, this book was heavy -- although knowing that 2095 Alex is alive and (relatively) well provides some solace.
Need book 3 now!!
ETA: It's come to my attention that the author uses AI for her covers and social media marketing. I stand by the review in terms of the reading experience, but wanted to flag this for other readers.
this premise really had potential but there is alot of noise. currently ZERO progress has been made from the first book where we got literally nowhere with Dacre's murder investigation.
why are we spending soooo much time in the past. its also overly descriptive, it feels like a play by play of each minute and it DRAAAGS!!!
this whole entire book could have been covered in book 1. the detective work is not detectiving at all, it is shoddy police work and so is really letting the book down.
I want to know what happens but at this point it is definitely feeling like I wasted a lot of time that I will never get back. I had a look at book 3 and we are still doing the dual timeline for the entire thing where it is a chapter each. WHHHYYY????? IN BOOK 3!!!! Still!!!! I cannot actually believe it. i am not gonna lie I started skimming some of Alex's and all of the Joe and Peter chapters. it feels like filler!
this needed some serious editing to reduce it to about 50 pages.
Once again, I was completely addicted to this book, and honestly could have kept reading for another 500 pages. In this instalment, the murder of Elliot Dacre takes a bit of a backseat, while the story focuses on Alexander’s horrific indenture to Tyler in the past timeline. Meanwhile, in the present, we start to unravel more of the mystery surrounding Peter’s death, and we get a much deeper look into the immense grief Josiah carries, and the role Alex plays in drawing it to the surface.
This story is definitely darker in tone than Crocodile Tears, so be mindful of your triggers. It was tough to read at times, but it’s all so well crafted, and I’m once again in awe of Xanthe’s ability to write rich, flawed, completely believable people. Both Josiah and Alex show remarkable character growth here, and I liked how their romance develops in a way that feels natural. I love that I’m constantly discovering something new about them, and it’s all knitting together into a much bigger picture.
Speaking of which, THE GASP I GUSPED at the plot twist! Maybe I should have seen it coming, but I was just vibing and it completely surprised me. I have a feeling it’s not the last twist we’re going to get in this series, because the plot feels so detailed and well thought-out, with so many threads weaving together in ways I probably haven’t even clocked yet. I’m excited to find out how it all ties together in the future!
The end of the book once again leaves a lot open-ended, with a dash of hope, but also plenty of intrigue and a sense of foreboding at what's to come. With two more books left, I'm sure it won't be plain sailing, but I'm looking forward to finding out.
I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
My review of the ebook edition is HERE - so I won't rehash that; here are my observations about the audiobook narration.
Matt Addis delivers another barnstorming performance that absolutely does justice to this intense, enthalling story. His pacing is good, his enunciation is clear and the emotional content of the story is superbly realised, from the tiniest hints of humour to the big, raw, sweeping moments of realisation, sorrow or anguish. MA expertly characterises and differentates between a large-ish secondary cast using a variety of tone and accent, and he absolutely nails the characterisations of the main protagonists. From the way he voices Josiah, it’s easy to visualise the character as a big man who exudes confidence and authority while hiding a deeply-seated vulnerabilty beneath his armoured exterior; the portrayal of Alex clearly shows how tough and resilient he is, even in the midst of the awful things that are happening to him, and MA does a great job of capturing the different facets of Tyler’s personality – he’s far from a one-note villain on the page, and that’s also true of him in the audio. It's a fabulous performance all round.
Note: Some of the darker aspects of the story can hit harder in audio so please check the content warnings in the author's notes at the beginning of the book.
In London 2095, those that survived the Rising of sixty years ago, find a way to exist. Of course, some are wealthy, some live on and then there’s the Indentured Servants who never know what there lives would lead too.
Homicide detective Josiah Raine and IS Alex Lytton have been residing under the same roof. A home where Josiah and his deceased husband Peter, along with Hattie, lived and loved. But Josiah still suffers with the loss of Peter. His emotions run high when it comes to reminiscing about all they had been through together.
Alex has experienced so much devastation in his life. From abuse, to secrets, lies, and learning so much about himself. He’s been dealing with the most evil man, George Tyler. Alex knows so much about this evil man, but doesn’t know who he can trust. So he continues to protect his secrets.
No matter how much time they have spent together Josiah feelings run high, that Alex knows so much more and it will effect more then the investigation of Elliott Dacre.
As Alex’s trust has become more solid in Josiah, he feels it’s time to bring out a shocking secret to Josiah. After the struggle to get this far in their connection, will the secret and all that Alex knows, end their fragile understanding or bring them together to fight for justice?
Xanthe Walter brings another dark and explosive novel to the “Dark Water” series with “Ghost Eye”. The author continues to create a vivid world building, with characters that face so many trials and tribulations of this dystopian time. With the Indentured Servants System, it brings out the corruption of the government and shows the power of the rich.
Besides the heartbreaking and fragile connection between Alex and Josiah, the “Dark Water” series is one of the best murder mysteries, I have ever read. Josiah is especially sly, he never let’s his guard down and he’s a hard man to figure out. There are elements and futuristic equipment that’s used in the investigation.
I’m highly recommending “Ghost Eye” the second installment in the “Dark Water” series. I highly suggest reading the first book “Crocodile Tears” because there’s so much to grasp about Alex Lytton and Josiah Raine and their lives before they meet. I will warn readers that this series is dark themed and is very explicit with both physical and mental abuse. The author also brings an abundance of interesting characters that keep this series going. I have to commend Xanthe Walter for her talent in keeping this series: exciting, fast paced, filled with surprises, secrets, deceit, and a gradual connection between Alex and Josiah. Xanthe Walter will continue to keep Alex and Josiah on their toes, with the third installment with “The Lost Zone”.
I wrote a review on Audible but it didn't save it and now 4 months later I am here and don't have an individual review for each book. I can say that I absolutely love them and once I revisit the story again I will write an individual review. This was a general review that Audible allowed me to write for the 4th and final book. I 100% percent recommend this series.
I love this series. There is so much thought into how the future world is and it's not the run of the mill scenario.
Alex has to be one of the most complex characters I've ever read about. The struggles he goes through from a young age to adulthood are heart wrenching. He endures so much and never gives up. Not many people could do this. His devotion to his brother is astounding, even though Charles doesn't deserve it. His reason for living to give Solange justice is remarkable. Always wanting his mother but just out of reach, His fathers love. Josiah's love. He's the most hated man but it's all a lie and the pain and suffering he goes through because of the lie is so sad. Tyler is an awful human being who exploited everyone around him but most of all Alex.
Josiah is strong, confident, sexy, driven but also lonely and in pain for the loss of his late husband. He is driven for justice and then Alex falls into his lap and he finds a purpose, finally, after Peter's death to start living again. Josiah is such a big character with strong morals but then will break them for his code of conduct. He is very honorable.
The whole IS system is an interesting idea, Floating cities. Ducks for vehicles. Very creative on the authors part.
Josiah and Alex do get a happy ending and I am so giddy for that. They are so good together. Josiah was the first man to want nothing from Alex. They both gave so much to each other and helped heal old wounds.
This is not always a happy story and there are some heavy parts to it. With all the cruelty and sadness it was still worth all the hours put into listening to all 4 books. There are happy moments too and they shine the brightest. Now if your looking for smexy scenes there are some. Some not so good but Josiah and Alex together = chefs kiss.
Matt Addis is a new to me narrator and he did a phenomenal job.
I received the first two and forth audios from the author. I am grateful for the author's generosity. This story will live rent free in my brain for a long time and I will defiantly be doing a re-listen.
God, this series just keeps getting better and better. 😭 Ghost Eye is book two in Xanthe Walter’s Dark Water series, and if you haven’t read Crocodile Tears yet, stop here and go do that first. This world is brutal, immersive, and honestly addictive—I cannot get enough.
This installment had me absolutely haunted. Alex. Josiah. Peter (can you be in love with a ghost? Because I am 100% in love with Peter). Even the side characters—whether you love them, hate them, or feel conflicted—completely pull you in. Every time I thought I had a piece of the puzzle figured out, Xanthe yanked the rug out from under me. She doesn’t just tell a story—she makes you work for it, and I adore that.
I loved watching Alex’s growth in this one. In Crocodile Tears, he was selfish, immature, and arrogant, but in Ghost Eye you really see how his past shaped him, and how it ripples out into everyone around him. Josiah’s arc broke me all over again too—the grief, the anger, the relentless drive to uncover the truth. Both of these characters are so damaged but so strong, and their journeys feel raw and real in a way that absolutely guts you.
I can’t say too much more without spoiling, but just know this: I went through three boxes of tissues reading this. 🥲 This book doesn’t hold back, and it will crush you before it rebuilds you.
Spice Level: 🌶️/5 — low spice, but high emotional intimacy and tension. The connection is raw and gutting, with more focus on trauma, grief, and survival than steam.
What to Expect:
🕵️♂️ Detective + suspect romance
😈 Enemies to lovers (with a twist)
🌊 Dystopian / climate-fiction setting
💔 Hurt/comfort
🔥 Touch-starved + emotionally wrecked characters
⏳ Slow burn, high tension
🩸 Murder mystery woven into personal trauma
Content Warnings: Xanthe puts trigger warnings at the start of the book—please read them. They are not for show. This installment gets heavy and dark (violence, abuse, grief, trauma, prostitution, loss).
Just… read this series. Let it ruin you. Let it haunt you. And then come scream/cry with me about who murdered Elliot, because the not-knowing is KILLING me. 😭.
I received a free copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving a review.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
After devouring the first volume of the series, Crocodile Tears, I immediately read, or rather listened to, volume two. I highly recommend reading the series in order to follow the events and understand the characters better. I was captivated by volume one and was therefore very curious about volume two. What can I say? I found Ghost Eye even more captivating! Once I started listening, I couldn't put the audiobook down, despite its considerable length of over 16 hours! The story is told alternately from the perspectives of Alexander Lytton and Detective Josiah Raine. There is a narrative strand in the present and then there are repeated flashbacks to the past, mainly Alexander's past. It tells of his time as an indentured servant. And the more I learned about Alexander, the more stunned I became. The story is really dark and sometimes hard to bear. How much can a person endure? Bit by bit, it becomes clear to both the reader and Alexander what motive George Tyler, his former houder, had for buying him. Alexander's father had warned him, but Alexander couldn't believe it. And to be honest, neither could I. In the present, the relationship between Alexander and Josiah is difficult and emotionally charged. Josiah has a murder case to solve, and he suspects that Alexander knows more than he is saying. And Alexander has very good reasons for his behavior. The story had me hooked from beginning to end. As a listener, you go through a rollercoaster of emotions. There is a murder case to solve, but it's not that easy. Some mysteries are solved, but more questions arise. What awaits the protagonists as the story progresses? Who is the murderer? How will the relationship between Alexander and Josiah develop? I can't wait to listen to the next volume!
Matt Addis narrated the audiobook and he did a damn good job again, bringing this captivating and intense story to life with his magnificent performance. He had a great pace, chose appropriate voices for the characters, and it was a pleasure to listen to him. He skillfully conveys all kinds of emotions perfectly, whether it's a touch of humor, fear, anger, confidence, sadness, or torment. Wow, that was really great!
I was absolutely blown away by Book 2. This story takes everything you thought you knew from the first book and deepens it, twists it, and tears it wide open—emotionally, narratively, everything. I won’t spoil a single thing because this is one of those stories you need to experience for yourself, completely unprepared for what’s coming.
Alexander… oh, Alexander. This man has been through so much, and as the layers are pulled back and his truth begins to unfold, it is absolutely devastating. The pain he carries, the burdens he shoulders, the way he endures—it broke my heart. He is fragile and strong all at once, and watching him suffer while trying to survive in a situation that keeps stripping him of his humanity is almost unbearable. You feel every ounce of his fear, his exhaustion, and his resilience.
And then there's Josiah—still trying to make sense of everything, still trying to hold it together, until he can’t anymore. Watching him finally face his grief rather than run from it gutted me. His heartbreak, his anger, the moments where he lets himself feel—it was raw and real and hit so hard.
This book is full of moments that will make you gasp out loud, moments that will wreck you, and others that will quietly sneak up and settle in your chest. The reveals in this installment are shocking and emotional, pulling you even deeper into the world and characters you thought you understood.
I’m completely hooked and emotionally ruined in the best way, and I honestly don’t know how I’m supposed to wait for Book 3. I need to know what happens next. I need to see these characters find peace. Because after everything they’ve been through, they deserve it.
Beginning with Alexander in Tyler’s custody in 2088, and the murder investigation underway in 2095, Ghost Eye is the compelling second novel in the Dark Water series.
After being betrayed by many in book one, Alexander finds himself an Indentured Servant under George Tyler, and is in dire circumstances. Josiah in 1995 has taken custody of Alexander who is living with him while the case is underway.
Alexander is subjected to torturous abuse and sexual assault as an IS under Tyler. He is beaten and attacked. In. 2095, Josiah and Alex grow closer, using first names and small life stories. They visit Tyler’s home, where Josiah sees through Tyler’s abduction, earning a piece of Alex’s trust.
Alex’s abuse continues, and I’ve had a difficult time listening to it. George Tyler is a disgusting character who sickens me. I hope he gets his reckoning. Barnabas is a delightful character who aids Alex in his struggles. Elsie and Esther fight for justice.
This book is such a heart wrenching story. We see character growth on both Alex’s and Josiah’s parts, and their continuing relationship development. With such a sad, cliffhanger of an ending, I’m anxious to begin book 3.
I’m invested in this epic, and will continue to devour and review each book!

A wonderful second instalment o spoilers for anything not in this book or already revealed in Crocodile Tears in this review. Some personal speculation, however.
I found this one a lot more painful (in the good way) than the first book, Crocodile Tears, which I also loved. But this one adds so very many twists and turns, so much more sadness for the characters.
It's leavened with happiness, but it's bittersweet in so many ways. Seeing Josiah and Peter so happy, knowing Peter is going to die, is lovely and painful at the same time.
I did love that Josiah finally faced the whole ordeal of Peter's death, and as for Ben's identity, that made so much sense and yet was an amazing surprise. Also that we found out about the mysterious holopicture in the rain that Josiah was sure he'd seen.
I was broken by what happened to Solange. Just broken.
I still have the same suspicions about there being more to Alex, Charles and their mum's accident. I won't say what they are in case I turn out to be right.
I was intrigued by this cliffhanger being set in the past.
These books remind me of my favourite soaps - the cliffhangers aren't brutal but oh, do I want to know what's next!
Even more invested in Josiah and Alex finding a way to be together, somehow.
Please heed the trigger warnings as this book is not for the faint-hearted but is so worth it. This is not a stand alone and you need to read Crocodile Tears first. As with the first book, I was completely wrapped up in Josiah and Alex's uneasy path to a sort of understanding. Facing their pasts and telling each other edited versions of it, for good reason, wasn't easy to read. Alex's suffering as an IS is brutal and not sugar-coated. It wasn't easy to read so steel yourself. There was little time to draw breath while reading, as every sad event unfolded in agony and pain. Just when you think it can't get any worse, it does. Revelations shocked and surprised me throughout. The world-building continues to be superb but the story is easily its equal. The sense of hopelessness is palpable, the heavy weight each character bears obvious and heartbreaking. Current day is interspersed with flashbacks, just as in Crocodile Tears, gradually revealing the past teasingly and skilfully. Xanthe Walter, you are a master of your craft. I have never hated a fictional character as much as I utterly abhor George Tyler. Kudos and keep it up.
Ghost Eye: Dark Water – Rook is a hauntingly atmospheric journey that pulls you beneath the surface—both literally and emotionally. From the very first chapter, the book drenches you in a world where mystery, danger, and hidden truths ripple through every page.
The author masterfully blends supernatural suspense with rich character development. Rook, the central character, is intriguing, layered, and flawed in all the right ways. You can’t help but root for them as they navigate the eerie waters and dark secrets surrounding the ghostly happenings. The setting itself almost feels like a character—moody, vivid, and immersive.
What really stands out is the writing style: lyrical but sharp, poetic yet grounded. The pacing keeps you hooked, slowly building tension with eerie twists that feel earned, not forced. Fans of gothic horror, urban fantasy, or emotionally charged mysteries will find plenty to love here.
Highly recommended for readers who enjoy a story that lingers in your mind long after the last page—like a shadow on still water.
Find something, Alex – find something, hold on to it tightly, and never let it go.
This series has been amazing so far. In the first book, Crocodile Tears, we first meet our MC's, Alex and Josiah, and their story continues in Ghost Eye, finding them still amidst a murder mystery while ribbons of their pasts are unfurled right alongside the present. Alex has been keeping secrets, including a connection to Josiah's husband's death, and Josiah finally lets some of his walls fall with Alex's help.
I adore Alex and Josiah...their personalities and how their pasts have made them who they are, for better or worse. Alex's life since the accident has been so hard, filled with so much trauma, it's hard to believe he's even the least bit sane--and I've teared up while reading some of the more traumatic situations he's been made to endure.
The world that Xanthe has created is fascinating, and I can't wait to read the next book!
Again, this is a continuation of the first book, it is NOT a standalone.
'Ghost Eye' is the 2nd of books in the 'Dark Water' series by Xanthe Walter, following on from Crocodile Tears'. I know how masterful Xanthe is at dropping major clues in an innocently inconspicuous way, so I keep notes as I read about the characters and any info that I feel may be important as the story progresses, they definitely helped in this second part, I was close with my thoughts/guesses for certain parts of the story. Anyway the plot and the action move quickly and dramatically in this second book of the series. We learn more about what happened to both Alex and Josiah in the past before Elliot’s murder. I don’t want to say too much as I don’t want to spoil it. But it’s quite a roller coaster of a journey and I think that journey is only just beginning for Alex. Please read the trigger warnings as the story definitely lives up to its non-consensual warnings, however there is lots of tender moments and lovely hotness too. Spicy rating 5/5 🌶️ I can’t wait for the third instalment! This is my honest review as an Advance Reader Copy of this book.
Ghost Eye took everything I loved about Crocodile Tears and turned up the emotion, danger, and suspense. This series just keeps getting better. I was hooked from page one, constantly on edge, never sure what heartbreak or twist was coming next.
The worldbuilding is haunting and vivid—Ghost Eye City is terrifying and heartbreaking, and Alexander’s storyline hit me hard. His pain, his resilience, and the emotional toll of what he endures are written with such raw honesty.
Josiah’s arc is just as powerful. What he thought he knew about his husband’s murder is completely shattered, and watching him unravel those truths while navigating his complex feelings for Alexander was both painful and beautiful. Their connection is full of tension, trauma, and longing—exactly the kind of slow-burn intensity I love.
This isn’t a light read, but it’s so worth it. If you like your romance with edge, heartbreak, and real emotional stakes, Ghost Eye delivers in every way. I can’t wait for book three!.

I loved the dual timelines and watching this story play out . I am super intrigued by the fact that the original murder remains unsolved/that is currently the most interesting plot line for me.
This was an ARC copy from the author through Book sirens. Another epic read!!! Damn! This story just sucks you in and makes you want it to end now, or not at all. !! I need to know the outcome! When I got Book two, I thought yes! All the answers will be here, the revelations to all the breadcrumbs the author has been carefully dotting through this incredible story. But no!!! There's a third book!!! There's more depravity to come. Or not? Alex and Joe have a long way to go to get all the answers they need and I need to know now!! Our characters have had a long hard road to find each other, ( or refind) but they're nearly there, just a few loose ends to tie up and we'll all get the full story. I have been amazed at the length of the story, and amazing detail the author has put into this huge, crazy story, to get us near to closure. I'm so excited for the next part. Bring it on! I absolutely loved reading this story.
I hate Tyler, with a passion that is only reserved for hateful beings and roaches. How can you hate someone so much so early? Well, read the first 3 pages of this book, and you’ll hate him as much as I do. And here I thought this book would give be the resolution I was after reading book 1, and I was wrong. But so glad to be wrong! I loved seeing things from Alex’s POV, it was truly fascinating, and it made me love Solange by seeing her throughout his eyes, but I was very disappointed with Ted. But it’s understandable as well. I can’t wait for the conclusion! This is an amazing story, and even though I want to know more, I, not sure I want it to end, the writing is fantastic, and the emotions the author evokes in you in just a few sense are incredibly powerful. He paints such a vivid picture, it’s more than simply reading a story, is living it along with the characters as well. Fantastic.
I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
Review for (Dark Waters-2) Ghost Eye from Xanthe Walter
Another fantastic book in the Dark Waters series by Xanthe Walter. Wow, this series just draws you in from the start. I love the danger, pain, and suspenseful mystery. How can you go wrong with an MM story that has all of these things? I know I can't. The pain that Detective Josiah Raine went through, witnessing his husband's brutal murder 7 years ago, was so hard for Josiah to heal. Go on. He needed the closure to find out why, but that was taken away when the murderer was dead and the case closed. Reading about what Alexander Lytton goes through was hard but needed for the story. Reading about what he goes through in the hands of the person who took him is hard, but Alexander will not let them take his memories. I fell hard for Alex, Josiah, and Peter the ghost. Watching what these guys go through is hard at times, but so worth the ride. I look forward to reading more about this world.
I finished reading this within a few days, couldn't put it down, and when I had to put it down to do boring stuff like go to work I was thinking about it!
I had to sit with it for a few days to let the emotions settle. It's just as beautifully written as the first instalment.
The tension is mounting, secrets are floating to the surface, but bringing more mystery and secrets with them! I sometimes think 'ah, I know what's gonna happen' and then something twists and my theory is dead in the water.
I was not expecting the deep emotional connection that would come, I had to stop reading at several points to stop crying and gather my senses.
You absolutely need to read Crocodile Tears first as this picks up where it left off and you will not be able to properly follow the story without it.
The world building and characters are thoughtfully developed and draw you in immediately.
