Emily Slate #4

Her Final Words: Emily Slate Mystery Thriller, Book 4

Rate this book
Special Agent Emily Slate has seen her fair share of death ever since joining the FBI. But never anything like this…

Emily’s most recent case brings her to a sleepy New York town to investigate the gruesome death of a fellow FBI agent. Except when she arrives, Emily discovers this was no home invasion gone wrong. This was a calculated kill, undertaken by a disturbed and brutal individual.

As Emily begins her investigation, the trail leads to a local author, who the killer is using as inspiration for his kills; copying details from the author’s books as templates on how to kill his victims. As the bodies pile up and the danger grows ever closer, Emily begins to suspect the author herself may be the killer’s ultimate target.

But just as Emily thinks she has a handle on things, her own husband’s killer surfaces with a warning for Emily. One that will turn everything she knows upside down…

They say the pen is mightier than the sword.

But the blade is far sharper than the pen…

Alex Sigmore is up to his old tricks again with his latest Emily Slate thriller. Through misleading clues, incompetent local agents, numerous red herrings and heart-stopping surprises, I was left gasping for air and sputtering for words at the end.

But I should start at the beginning, shouldn’t I? Coincidentally, after Agent Slate finds a hidden surveillance camera in her apartment, fueling her fears of being watched by the woman responsible for the death of her husband, she and Agent Foley are sent out of town on assignment to track down a brutal murderer.

Agent Slate is introduced to local author Rose Blackthorne, otherwise known as Stephanie Murphy and her best friend, Erin Burnett. In talking to Stephanie, Agent Slate keeps trying to remember something, and finally realized that the details of the murder match the plot of Stephanie’s first book.

The rest of the book is a full out frontal assault on the senses as Slate and Foley fight local agents to uncover a twisted trail of clues leading them everywhere except to the killer. When the killer is finally brought to justice, and Slate and Foley head home, all Emily can think of is being reunited with her dog Timber, and possibly salvaging her relationship with her In-laws.

And the end, oh, the end. Emily and Timber make peace with her brother-in-law. But, something is very rotten in Denmark. I’d tell you, however, you’ll have to read it for yourself.

I was given this copy of the book in exchange for an honest review.

Life imitates art… and it’s stranger than fiction

This time, Emily gets called in to investigate the case of an FBI agent murdered in her own home. But as Emily & Zara begin their investigation they realize the murder is a line-by-line recreation of a work of fiction by a local author. As real life continues to parallel the make-believe, we’re taken on a journey that leaves us questioning everything and everyone… even those closest to us.

I love how Emily’s cases highlight insecurities and mysteries from her personal life, shining a light into dark corners she might otherwise have overlooked. The way she’s forced to juggle the obligations of her job with the personal needs of solving her husband’s murder is deftly handled. And the danger of her personal investigation keeps looming larger and larger. Something is bound to break… and from the epilogue chapter I’m thinking it’s gonna boil over soon. I can’t wait!

The Emily Slate series continues in thrilling style with Emily making some stunning discoveries at the start of this book. But before she can delve into those new findings, she is sent to New York to investigate the death of an FBI agent who has been murdered in her home in a very brutal fashion. Initially believed to be a home invasion, it quickly becomes clear it is far more than that given how the body is laid out and how the agent was murdered.
When Emily and Zara uncover that the agent was murdered in the same way as in a book written by an Author who lives in the same local town as the crime, alarm bells go off.
Trying to solve the mystery, as well as working with a group of agents who are trying to deal with the loss of one of their own, Emily and Zara struggle to unravel the reason behind the agent’s death. When a second body is uncovered, displayed in another scene from a book in the same series as the first murder, it suddenly makes the case that much more urgent as they are now dealing with a serial killer. A serial killer that likes murdering people in the same way that an Author has killed people in her books.
As well as trying to solve the murders before this killer strikes again, Emily is contacted by someone and warned off investigating Matt’s death anymore, or else. They also give her some information (no spoilers), that starts to unravel her personal life with its implications. Emily’s world becomes increasingly complicated.
This is another intriguing psychological mystery/thriller with Emily and Zara having to work against the clock with multiple different threads to investigate, but the stress of a killer that could take another life at any moment. Added to that is an office full of upset agents who were very close to the murdered agent, including one closer than all the rest.
Emily Slate is an exceptional character, written with gritty realism from an incredibly realistic point of view. We get to see the story unfold through her eyes, as she investigates each aspect of this mystery. Sigmore has taken great care in making sure that Slate’s character is accurate, creating this in-depth and complex character that we can just get lost in and enjoy the story through. Slate’s character is incredibly powerful, we get to see her struggling with not just the case, but also her personal life as she is coming to terms with the death of her husband, the incident that nearly took her job, as well as killed an agent and that of a young child. Slate’s character is intensely realistic, her drive and motivation, her commitment to seeing her cases through, but also her inner turmoil and the borderline PTSD. As a former cop, I can relate so well to Emily Slate’s character.
Zara Foley provides the role of side-kick with engaging conversation, and whilst she does play comic relief at times, she is also Slate’s sounding board, and as such provides keen insight into their cases. Foley also has a strong electronic investigational background from her time within the Bureau investigating such evidence.
The two together make a sound investigation team, and it is fascinating reading about them as they pull apart a case piece by piece and speak with each of the people involved. Again, Sigmore has done an outstanding job of capturing the procedural aspects of an investigation to really immerse the reader into the story.
There are so many other amazing characters in this story, but I am not going to mention them as I don’t want to give away spoilers.
As with each of these stories, the world-building is extraordinary, with compelling detail at every level. Sigmore really pays attention to the finer details (all the way down to footwear), making every effort to impact the reader, and provide a thrilling and intriguing story. It is not just the attention to details in the surroundings, and with the characters and bodies either, it is with the procedural aspects of the story, in which Sigmore has made an outstanding effort to try and get things as accurate as possible so that the reader can really engage with the story. It is these aspects of the world-building that really set this series apart.
This is a brilliant addition to what is already an extraordinary series. Slate is faced with a difficult mystery of who killed an FBI agent, something that is not only going to impact the community, but have deeper ramifications for the Bureau. As well as trying to catch that killer, she is also trying to work out who the mystery woman is, possibly the person who is responsible for killing Gerald Wright, and maybe even her husband. This book is exceptional, with both the dead agent, as well as Emily’s ongoing hunt, it is a stunning thrill ride you won’t be able to put down.
If you want an outstanding thriller – this series is it!!!

This was another fantastic outing with Agent Emily Slate. This author can absolutely weave quite a tangled web and keep the reader fully engaged. This author has the gift of good pacing and his story arcs are very well done.

Emily Slate has become a dear acquaintance, and I'm sure I'm not the only reader becoming more concerned with her well-being and safety. The plot, as is oft said, grows thicker, and the pieces are starting to fit more and more together.

So, with the obligatory clichés out of the way, I highly recommend embarking on the Emily Slate Rollercoaster (being sure to keep all arms and legs in the car at all times - as this author can, and will, dismember you) - the twists and turns are worth the effort: be aware (beware) the centripetal force is greater than the centrifugal force and you will absolutely be drawn into the center of Emily's life.

Another 5 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ premise!

A fabulous fourth instalment of Emily State series! Revealing and intriguing. Suspenseful and Exciting. Heart pounding scenes. Intimate and thought provoking.

Anger is a powerful emotion. Feeling isolated, angry, and depressed can turn into a vicious cocktail that’s led to disastrous consequences. The negative side of angst. Alex Sigmore is a connoisseur of the human psique and he applies it to the fullest in this thrilling series, making it thought provoking, nerve wracking and heart wrenching. A breathless ride from the beginning till the end. Alex exploits our nervous state, surfing the wave till it breaks with a loud crescendo at the end..,and what an end! OMGoodness! I was flabbergasted!
In my opinion, one of the best endings I’ve ever read! Some may interpret it as a cliffhanger; if it is, it’s a delicious torture because I love the feeling of nervousness, the impatientness, the need to know what will poor Emily do? How will she cope?..isn’t it just exciting, the wait? 😄
I am so eager to get my hands on “Can’t Miss Her” #5 and start to devour it! I can’t recommend this series highly enough.

Received as an ARC, this is an honest review. Just when it seemed Emily Slate has reached a dead end with finding the truth about her stalker assassin, a shocking, disturbing discovery upends the whole cat and mouse game both women are embroiled in. With no time to process this newest twist, Emily and Zara head off to New York to find the bastard whose has struck down one of their own. Right from the start, how Agent Melissa Green was killed strikes a memory for Emily that she's seen this murder before; browsing through their hotel's book selection gives Emily the reason why: murders lifted from local author Ruby Blackthorn and her series of books. While they seem to have a road map of what to expect from this serial killer, the clues leads to a person that has a certain level of skills but suspects they focus upon don't fit the mold. At the same time, new and even stark revelations regarding Emily's husband along with new threats leaves her even more hollowed out than ever before... and determined to never stop hunting for the answers. The truth and motive behind the series of grizzly, staged deaths is all more sad for the innocent lives nearly sacrificed by the killer because of it. This beauty of a labyrinthine read is bookended by another twist in Emily's life that completely alters what you thought you already knew. Why Emily Slate's husband had to die has just gotten more complicated.

A gorgeous, smartly written series keeps you guessing... and coming back for more.

Highly recommended.

What a revelation

This series is really starting to get more intriguing with each edition. Each book is a story in and of itself but there is still the matter of the real story. Hints, just small hints as to what it is, but the ending of this one truly dropped a bombshell.

WHAT!!! She’s done it again!

Alex Sigmore is the epitome of suspense and intrigue. Once again she has written an ending leaving you on the edge of your seat, needing to know what happens next! It’s been a long time since I have found a series where one book is just as good, if not better, than the last!!

Okay WOW I did not see the end coming. Literally dropped my jaw. I have to say I suspected who the killer was, although I wasn’t 100% correct. However this series still has me in a chokehold

Sinister series with intense intrigue

Slate is up to her eyeballs with a serial case that mimics a popular set of mystery novels. Meanwhile her own personal mystery is unsolved and threatens to attack all she has held dear about her deceased husband.

A serial killer who is killing according to an author's stories and is leaving no evidence. An FBI agent who is working the case while the suspect in her husband's murder connects with her again. This is a very emotionally challenging case for Emily Slate. I loved the book! I would highly recommend it.

Stunned!

What a surprise ending. Your books are amazing. You have the ability to keep your reader hooked and not able to put the book down. At least I can't. You really threw a surprise in the end. I'm glad you are bringing Agent Coll to D.C, and teaming him with Emily.

Finally. Finally I feel like this author is showing off their true potential.

Those of you who follow my reviews know that I have been struggling to get through this series for awhile now. In the prior books I would get a glimpse here and there of what I thought was a good story, but something about it would just either fall flat, or be so implausible that it was laughable. This one however, had everything I was looking for; suspicious characters, grisly murders with victims that at first glance don't seem to have anything in common, and one heck of a twist at the end.

I thought it was clever to have the murders staged after murders that took place in a popular book series, bringing the focus immediately on the author as a potential victim, thereby wasting valuable time exploring that avenue of investigation which kept the police from realizing until the third murder, what the connection was between the victims (although they still never explained how one was given enough advanced warning to hide their child).

As usual, I enjoyed the banter between Zara and Emily. You can tell with each book how perfectly they tend to balance each other out bouncing ideas off of each other and occasionally giving the other the kick in the pants they need. And I enjoy how Zara was there to keep Emily grounded when she received some concerning information about her husband potentially having a secret life. That was the first twist in this story. And it makes me curious as to if what he told her was a lie, who was he really? And how did Emily not notice that she was being lied to when she's supposed to be some hot shot detective? Is it a case of only seeing what she wanted to see? Or did she feel nothing off because he gave her no reason to think anything was amiss? I'm also curious as to how if the FBI does deep background checks on its members families, how they missed the fact that everyone about Matt was a lie.

The second, and more powerful twist comes at the end of the book when we find out that much like her deceased husband, not everyone is who they claim to be. And while I find it a little odd that Emily didn't push those people for more information (at the very least did they have any reason to suspect her husband wasn't who he said he was). I am insanely curious to see how this new development is going to play out in the future.

Disappointing

*Spoiler Alert*

So I did enjoy the story - up to a point. However our main character, Emily, is considered to be an exceptional FBI agent as well as a criminal profiler, so why does it not occur to her that her former in-laws could be considered suspicious? If I had just gotten information about my dead spouse that he was not the person I thought he was, I would wonder how much his brother knew about Matt's activities and/or if they were really brothers. At the very least, I would speak with my boss to discuss a deeper dive on the whole family and possible surveillance as well. The fact that it never occurs to Emily or her boss just astounds me. I would be doing all of these things and more if I was her and I'm not in law enforcement!

Honestly I've lost all interest in the story because of this and don't plan to continue reading the series because I can't stop thinking about it. Maybe it will occur to Emily in the next book but as far as I'm concerned, that's too late.

I like the characters and the fact you don't have to read the other books to follow the story. However, there are things that carry through and make more sense if you've read the other ones, but each book stands alone at least crime wise.
Emily Slate, an FBI agent, solves pretty interesting and sometimes gruesome crimes. Since her job takes her all over, each book is a separate crime, so you can just read and enjoy and not worry about the order. Except for the epilogue, it refers to previous events, but I dont want to spoil anything. Her "sidekick" Zara is a contrast to Emily, but they make a good team. Their talents complement each other.
It's a satisfying read 📚 😊

A bit of a disappointment

Although the case Agent Slater was working on in this story had some interesting details, it wasn’t a story that I hated to put down. It actually took me longer to read than a book of this type usually does because the necessary level of suspense just wasn’t there. There were no shocking discoveries; the evidence found to help solve the case seemed a little lame.
Agent Slater is still a character I like reading about, and her FBI friend and sometimes working partner is also a likable character. The end of the story had a surprising twist which is hopefully a promise that Book 5 will be an exciting read.

Emily finds out she her apartment has a camera in it and she is being surveilled. She believes it is the woman who killed her husband. Her boss sends her to New York to work on a case. People are being killed in the manner and order of a series of mystery novels. I enjoyed the mystery and how Emily and Zara solved it. We also get more information about her husband's murder that was very shocking. This underlying story is a big reason I will continue the series. I really want to know what is going on. I would recommend this series.

Murder by the book

With an assassin closing in Emily notified her superiors at the FBI. She is assigned the brutal murder of an FBI agent in New York. This leads to more murder and a cunning killer.

The murder mystery is good. The intrigue about be mill's husband's death is over the top and kind of silly. The back and forth between Emily and Sara gets tiresome. Still an entertaining read.

SENSATIONAL SERIES!! I'M hooked.

If you've found yourself here, look no further for your next great read. Emily Slate is a badass FBI Special Agent. Her life is rough and it continues to make her tough. You can't help but like and respect this tough as nails woman and her fellow agent, and only true friend, Zara. Follow them as they investigate complex and engrossing cases in a hard to put down series.

So her best friend whom she's giving everything to, fucks her husband while she is in the other room? Felt sorry for our killer. The best friend and the husband should have been killed. I hate cheaters and none of the murders would have happened if the killer wasn't betrayed by her best friend and dick of a husband.
