In handen van de tijd

Rate this book

To write a novel was a dream of mine since I was a child. Life, my practical nature, and self-doubt got in the way, so it was decades later that an opportunity to write finally presented itself. I honestly didn't think I had what it takes to write a full-length novel, but once I faced the blank screen and my fingers touched the keyboard, everything disappeared except my characters and their surroundings, and suddenly I knew that this was what I was born to do.

Since then, I've written many books and have enjoyed some positive reviews, but sometimes, when I stop to reflect, I'm still amazed that I'm living my dream.

I enjoyed this. I like the method of time travel. Hadn't read anything like that before. Valerie was a good character and the story moved along swiftly. If I have a complaint and obviously I have, it's that everything happened too quickly. At the end of the book I think Valerie had been in the past about a year and the amount of stuff that happened to her was a little unbelievable. Still, I will read the next in the series to see what further befalls her.

I had a hard time deciding between a two star and three star review. I gave it three stars because I liked the story but I had a hard time with how fast Valarie slept with Finn and how it seemed she really didn't give too much thought to her family. Her whole relationship with Finn I just really did not believe, There was just something false with it and I can't really explain it. I also had a hard time trying to figure out when things happened. Had Valarie been there three weeks or three months when certain events occurred in the book. The time line seemed fuzzy.

I thought the best part of the entire book was how Valarie let her sister know what happened and that she had a good life.

What a surprise this was. I wasn't expecting much with this freebie and I probably wouldn't have read it otherwise. I could have used some editing and in the beginning it felt like their was a lot of telling instead of doing. But, I really enjoyed it. I stayed up late last night just to finish it. I enjoyed this book more than some other popular authors. I will definitely check out her other books. I think I have one more freebie from her and will be reading that one very soon.

I couldn’t finish this book. I got to almost half way and it just wasn’t my thing.

I didn’t realise that it was a romance novel when I picked it up from the library. Tbh the title and the cover drew my attention and I thought I would read it, but then it turned out to be sex every few pages and it’s just not my thing to read. Now I’m wondering if all romance books are like this or if this is actually supposed to be smut?

Either way, I don’t mind if a book has sex here and there (looking at you game of thrones and acotar) but I need the characters and story line to be strong and I didn’t connect with either. The style of writing was also not my thing. It felt like so much was just summarised rather than described and shown.

Anyway I won’t leave a star rating as I didn’t actually finish it, but I wanted to leave my thoughts on it.

What happens when you decide to set the right time as 16:05h in an old clock and you are transported to the year of 1605?

This is the story of Valerie Crane who, in the wake of a painful divorce, finds herself transported from 2010 to the early Seventeenth Century in England.

I liked the way the heroine sent a "message" to her living sister in the 21st century through a painting made by Joseph Blackburn.

This is the first book of the Hands of Time Trilogy.

I really do not read much about time travel. But I was pleasantly surprised when I read the story of Valerie Crane Whitfield. Valerie turns to her sister after her divorce and the two travel to England...Valerie trying to overcome her failed marriage and Louisa on a business trip. While shopping, the unimaginable happens and Valerie finds herself in a different time and place. What would you do? How frightened would you be? She seeks help from two brothers living at Yealm Castle and both brothers fall madly for their mysterious and beautiful visitor. This is one tale about true love. Religious and political betrayal, what one brother will do for the other and a secret shared between man and wife and a thirty year old disappearance of another woman are just a few of the highlights of this tale.

I enjoyed the strong characters developed for this story. Valerie found in this new time and age what her heart truly desired and what she could not have in her own time and place. She was portrayed as strong and yet true to her heart. I loved how she handled the love of two brothers. Finnlay was not who I wanted her to fall in love with...I wanted her to love Alec, from the start, but eventually.... Anyway, the characters came alive for me as did the world of 1605. I enjoyed meeting the house staff from Mrs. Dobbs to Betty...they were great secondary characters! And of course, Valerie's sister, Louisa....how devastating to lose your only sister and not know how or why, was she still alive? And I now understand Guy Fawkes Day...so even though this was a work of fiction, I learned something! I thought it was a great story and recommend it as a fantasy, fun,
and romance at it's best!

Let me start off by saying that the highest I can rate this book is a 5, but if I could rate it higher I would.

This book follows Valerie a young woman who has known loss. She has found herself unable to have a child which led to her marriage ending. She goes on a trip with her sister, Louisa, to England to get away from all the heartache and soon finds herself on a bigger adventure than she ever imagined. While shopping one day she finds a clock. This clock has powers unknown to her. She is soon transported from her time of 2010 to 1605. Lost and alone she finds herself in the care of Alex and Finlay Whitfield. Soon both men find themselves in love with Valerie and she must choose between the two men. Her story from there is one of heartache and revival.

I have read many time travel romances. I always read them and think I can never find one that's better than the last, but I was wrong. I found that in this book. This book was written so well. From beginning to end it sucked me in and I could not put it down. It was filled with history and romance. It made me happy and sad. It made me laugh and cry. It was an amazing story. From the characters to the scenery to the history this book had it all. It was a colorful, interesting, insightful, and steamy read. It was all around a great book.

I love coming across new authors and their works. This was a great treasure in my mind. This is only book 1 in this series and I can not wait to read more....Stormi

K I have to spoil because no one else has. This book is hella tell and not show and that was so frustrating, plus poor story telling. Okay down for spoilers.

Valarie has sex with Finn like, immediately after she gets there. Valarie gets pregnant and they do end up marrying.

Buuutttt because this is a love triangle, there has to be some resolution. So Finn gets caught up in the Guy Fawkes plot and is captured. Alec sneakes him and Valarie in to see him, he gives his blessing for them to marry and Alec suffocates him so he can die in peace.

Valarie has a boy and they name him Finn. She and Alec do get married and she decides she does love Alec? But literally there are no conversations between the two of them to show their relationship progressing. So we're just told "oh I do love him!!!1!!1!1"

The pushback from Finn being part of the plot and a traitor is too much to handle, so they sell everything and move to Virginia, right in the beginning of it's colonization process. The end of the first book we're told Val is pregnant again, and she's getting the portraits painted that Louisa later finds.

The writing is poor but the story is interesting.

I really wanted to hate this book. The set up was sloppy. Our lead Valerie was not a historian nor a professor but somehow she slipped into the 1600's seamlessly. Even her name wasn't questioned. She never slipped up with slang terms of acted like a new Yorker from the 21st century. That was a little annoying. She tried for like a day to find The clock then she was pretty ok with everything. The story was intriguing enough for me to finish the book and want to read the next book in the series. I kind of suspected a lot of the twists but still kept reading.

Interesting.

The story was very interesting and I found myself lost in the story. But I must agree that some parts may seem a bit boring than the other chapters. Still, it's worth to finish and generally a good book.

Interesting…🧐

Even though this book had it’s flaws, I really enjoyed it. There was something that just drew me in. I can’t imagine living in 1605, with all their superstitions, politics, religion, and social rules.

The plotting is phenomenal and the story telling absolutely top quality

Turning back the hands of a clock doesn’t just shift time—it changes the entire era. That’s exactly what happens to Valerie, the protagonist. But her journey doesn’t end there—she must now navigate a world she’s only read about, facing more than a few complications along the way.

Meanwhile, in the present, Valerie’s sister Louisa begins searching for her, uncovering some truly shocking secrets in the process.

I was completely mesmerized by Irina Shapiro’s writing. The atmosphere is rich and immersive.

One of the quotes I particularly liked

> “Rooms were wallpapered in old-fashioned patterns of pink cabbage roses, which clashed hideously with the bedspreads and matching drapes.”

I also enjoyed the ruined English castle it was memorable—lonely and inviting all at once.

There’s no water or milk—only ale and wine. Details like these make the past feel vivid and real.

Final Thoughts:
Although this is a five-star review, I’d give it more if I could. The plotting is phenomenal and the storytelling absolutely top quality. If you enjoy time travel, historical fiction, and romance set in England, The Hands of Time is a must-read.

When a woman accidentally travels back in time several centuries, things are not what one would expect. Valerie, a modern-day woman, finds herself back in the year 1605, in England, during the time of James I/VI. She meets two charming, handsome brothers who show interest in her.

Interestingly, she chooses one rather early in the book but is still close to the other brother. Valerie marries her new love and becomes pregnant; then tragedy strikes. Her husband becomes involved in the Gunpowder Plot, a plan to blow up the king and parliament because of repressive policies toward Catholics. What happens next is a tearjerker and makes this novel not so much a romance as a time-travel story with heavy romantic elements.

Valerie and one brother have to make a hard choice, and they find that being related to a “traitor” has terrible repercussions. They must leave England forever. They get on a ship and head to the primitive Jamestown settlement in Virginia (Note: the author used a little artistic license with the historical dates here, but it worked).

Throughout the story, Valerie’s sister tries to find her missing sister in the present. Working in the art field, she comes across an old portrait of her sister from the seventeenth century and is shocked. She will make a decision carrying heavy risk and try to find her sister, setting up a nice transition into the next book.

The twists and turns keep things moving swiftly. The setting is well-written, rich with historical details, and the characters are realistic and likeable. This is an entertaining read.

Irina pens "The Hands of Time", a romance mystery with a very interesting story line filled with emotions. I loved how strong and believable the characters were which made this book is a real page turner for me. Some of the historical facts were incorrect, but what does it matter....especially if you can accept time traveling. There is a cliffhanger at the end and now I can't wait to see what happens next. Highly recommended for all romance, mystery lovers.

I was surprised that this book was as good as it was. There are twists and turns you don’t expect and it fully kept my interest.
I wouldn’t describe the writing style as classic “literature” because of the style. It’s just that the author seems to have a very contemporary style that doesn’t necessarily fit the time period in which she’s writing. She’s a terrific storyteller that doesn’t fit any standard mold.
I enjoyed how the book develops steadily and keeps you guessing. She did a great job in developing her characters and stays true to their personhood throughout.

As a fan of Irina Shapiro I was not hesitant to start a new series by her. This story was SO INTRIGUING ... and somewhat different than other time travel books! The heroine is intelligent, clever and understands the problems of being in England in 1605!! There are small surprises towards the ending ... and that just entices me to pick up the second book - PRONTO!!!!

"The Hands of Time" a loosely-based historical romance heats up when Valerie Crane a divorcee haunted by her ex-husband's infidelity is swept back in time to Yealm Castle in the year 1605. Confused and frightened she's offered a home and protection by Alexander Whitfield, although she quickly falls for his dashing and charming brother Finlay. When Finn, lead by a staunch belief that Catholics are being unfairly treated contributes to a dangerous and treacherous scheme that backfires bringing death to all involved, Valerie turns to Alexander in their grief and remorse only to wonder if love can live again in a broken heart with the brother who's kept his distance, loving her in silence.

Caught in a romantic triangle with two brothers who are both smitten, Valerie never expected to find love after her ex-husband in the modern world betrayed her. Set against the injustices of religious intolerance of that era and Guy Fawkes "Gunpowder Plot" the plot quickly heats up when Valerie falls for the impulsive Finn whose beliefs lead him on a destructive path that could lead to death and the financial ruin of his family. Although an interesting story line with a poisoning, political plotting and storm on the high seas there's a lack of buildup in intensity and suspense in the calamities that befall the family. There is also a lack of realism as the era was governed by strict decorum and code of behaviour which would have labelled Valerie as a wanton when she has sex with Finn. However these problems do not delineate from the enjoyment of the romance.

The plot switches between the past and present with a dash of mystery that includes an antique ormolu clock set 4 hours ahead, a student who disappeared thirty years before and a painting of Louisa's missing sister that suddenly shows up in the gallery where she works. But the main plot revolves around Valerie's life and romances in 1605. Swiftly the story progresses to a climax that promises another book in" the Hands of Time" series.

Valerie Crane is the bitter and angry woman whose ex-husband betrayed her. Swept back in time she's scared and perplexed, not knowing where she is or who to trust. A passionate, spirited but shy young woman she succumbs to Finn's flirtatious charm and ends up having an affair that quickly is followed by a marriage proposal. Alexander Whitfield is the thoughtful, intelligent steadfast but melancholy older brother who's haunted by the loss of his wife and finds it hard to show his feelings. Yet in the end it's Alexander's unwavering commitment and love that wins Valerie's heart. These main characters infuse the drama with passion, depth and a complexity that breathes life into the story.

I liked " The Hands of Time" with its time travel, romance and dash of mystery. Although I would only rate it a 3.5 I have given it a 4.0 because of the scale.

In The Hands of Time, Irina Shapiro tells the story of Valerie Crane who, in the wake of a painful divorce, finds herself transported from 2010 to the early Seventeenth Century in England. Here, she meets two handsome brothers, Alexander and Finlay Whitfield. Both seem to have romantic feelings for Valerie, and she must choose between the two.

This work is a historical romance, one facilitated by time travel, with the focus most heavily on the romance. I have to say that I'd like to have heard more about the historical background. The novel is set during the Gunpowder Plot in London, as Catholic Guy Fawkes and his fellow conspirators plot to blow up Parliament and, with it, King James. This specific historical moment Shapiro uses to create a significant plot point. This conflict between Catholics and Protestants, the Gunpowder Plot, and even the small details of life in England during this time period are more interesting and compelling than the romantic relationships between these characters, and I would have preferred a slightly different focus. However, I am aware that many readers are much more interested in romance than detailed historical fiction, and I think Shapiro's novel will appeal to this kind of reader.

Shapiro writes from a variety of points of view, most often that of Valerie Crane, but also from the viewpoint of Valerie's sister, Louisa, and each of the Whitfield brothers. While I appreciate that we, as readers, are allowed to see the events of the story from this multiplicity of perspectives, I found it distracting and a bit artificial that Valerie's sections are written in the first person, whereas the others are all written in third person. To be honest (and I hate to resort to saying this sort of thing), The Hands of Time would benefit from a really good editor or at least a thorough proofreading.

This novel is a quick, breezy read and will be appreciated by the reader who appreciates a historical romance, heavy on the romance. The sex scenes are not abundant but are written with some level of graphic detail. In fact, I found them to be oddly distracting and not necessarily in keeping with the characters themselves. In all, this is not a work for the overly discriminating reader, but I do think there's a definite market for this style of romance fiction.

I've decided to use just this to review the series...well what I read anyway.
I gave up after book 4. It could have been great (better than this one) but I'm tired of the same old story and homosexual rape.
This is not much different than Outlander. Not as good though. But similar story with less accuracy in history. I love history. I think to get that right isn't all that hard either. So many errors that most might not notice, but I sure did. Drove me nuts.
James I would not have considered himself to be a Catholic. That's mentioned through all 4 books. WRONG! He was only baptized as a Catholic. He wasn't raised with his Catholic parents. He was raised as a Protestant. No one would have considered him one.
North Carolina didn't exist during this time. They didn't split until the 1700s. They were just Carolina. Not north and south. So, no, no would say would 'we went to North Carolina.' Silly but I think it should matter.
The part that made me quit so much was the push of some homosexual theme. Do all writers think we all much push that idea in everything we do lately? I'm so tired of it. If only 4% of the current population CONSIDER themselves LGBT...only one of those letters being gay, then why would we think anyone would make it obvious and well-known back then. AND there's only 1 (ONE) historian that thinks that King James MAY have been having a homosexual relationship with the Duke of Buckingham. ONE! In academia it takes more than the theory of ONE historian for it to be deemed likely or even possible for that matter. ONE makes for rumor. UGH so annoying! Heck even Wikipedia which most wouldn't trust as factual mentions this fact about the Duke of Buckingham. So poor research. But the fact that she tries to make the rape of a man (ok so not as bad as in Outlander but still) not that bad and 'forgivable' as if we should pity the duke is beyond me. I ended up hating the book by the end.
All this series is, is Outlander in England and the colonies but in the previous century with a slightly better female main character. Well she's a bit boring but she's not a jerk like in Outlander. But if you want to read more of the same go ahead. I quit! This same author has a much better time travel series. Still not great on the history but much more interesting if you ask me. I liked the characters more. It's called Wonderland. Skip this one and go with that one instead.

Unexpectedly finding love in the past

I really enjoyed Valerie, Finley and Alec’s time traveling historical romance with a side of quasi-love triangle. The story hooked me in and took me along for a spicy and emotional ride. And the history nerd in me enjoyed the historical references and the glimpses of 17th century life. To escape the wedding date of her cheating ex-husband to his pregnant girlfriend, Valerie accompanies her sister Louisa to a small town in England. While Louisa works as an art restorer, Valerie explores the small village. While in an antique shop, Valerie resets the time on an antique clock and finds herself in 1605 instead of 2010. Luckily Valerie is taken in by two brothers, Finlay and Alec Whitfield who live in the local castle. Now if she can just figure out what happened and get back to her regular life or figure out which brother she has stronger feelings for. The story is told through multiple points of view - Valerie, Louisa, Finlay and Alec - which helped to round out some aspects of the story with less telling and more showing. The story was well written and included three dimensional characters and an engaging storyline as shown through mystery, sweet moments, spice, laughs, messy families, painful pasts, surprises, danger, plot twists, fate, and love. I look forward to reading more in the series and continuing Valerie’s story.

What a wonderful entertaining read this was. I have read other books by Irina Shapiro and have not yet been disappointed by any of them. I love her style of writing, its just flows easily and makes you not want to put the book down. I enjoyed the time travel adventure Valerie embarked on. The book had everything, history, romance, adventure, love, loss, it took you on a rollercoaster ride of emotions. All the characters were very well developed and likeable. Very much looking forward to reading book 2.
