Her Deadly Promise by Carla Kovach is book 12 in the Detective Gina Harte series. The suspense builds to a nail-biting conclusion throughout the book. Since this is my introduction to this talented author, I'm excited to explore her other works.
Synopsis: An idyllic stretch of Church Road in a suburban neighborhood is home to happy families, picturesque parks, and friendly residents. Billie Reeves, a young mother who just took her last breath, lies behind the red door of house number 8.
In the grass outside their home, Kayden, age four, has been sitting alone for hours. He silently cries as he waits for his mother Billie, but she’ll never come for him. It will be the last time Kayden sees her. Who will become the next victim after someone murdered Billie?
Plot twists keep you on your toes throughout the book. You won't want to stop reading once you start. There is something engrossing and mind-bending about it. This psychological thriller is not to be missed!
Her Deadly Promise (Detective Gina Hart Book 12) is available on December 2nd.
Thank you, NetGalley and Bookouture, for sharing this outstanding novel with me. Carla Kovach's work thrilled me and I'm eager to read more!
Her Deadly Promise by Carla Kovach is the 12th in the Detective Gina Harte series.
First, let me thank NetGalley, the publisher Bookouture, and of course the author, for providing me with a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own.
Series Background: (Warning – Contains spoilers from previous books) DI Gina Harte works homicides. Her team consists of: DS Jacob Driscoll, DC Harry O’Connor and DC Paula Wyre, with a lot of assistance from PC Smith and PC Kapoor. Gina is a stubborn lady, and a determined detective. She has had a rough life, which has led to an uneasy relationship with her daughter Hannah and grand-daughter Gracie. It has also led to a lack of real friends. She used to have a relationship with her boss, DCI Chris Briggs, but he has found someone else. It is not common knowledge that Gina's husband was abusive, and only Briggs knows that she did not save him when he fell to his death many years ago.
My Synopsis: (No major reveals, but if concerned, skip to My Opinions) Billie Reeves is murdered, just steps away from her 5 year old boy Kayden. While he waited for her to tell him it was okay to come inside the house she lay dying in her kitchen.
Billie had secrets, and one of them was that she was sleeping with her sister Serena's boyfriend. Another is that she was sleeping with men for the money to survive her meager lifestyle. Some of her secrets were not as private as she thought.
Kayden's father (Shaun) abandoned them, and last they heard, he was in Australia. He's closer than they think, and he wants his son.
Nadia is Billie's best friend, but she is the one that spreads rumours about Billie's activities. She and her husband Ed have their own secrets.
Meera is another of Billie's friends, and she too has her own secret.
Then there is Claudia, friend number three to Billie. She and her husband Gavin supposedly have a perfect marriage. Claudia knows a lot of her friends secrets, and has one of her own.
Gina and her team have a lot to discover before someone else dies. Meanwhile, Gina is having her own issues. Between menopause and hot flashes, she is struggling to let Briggs go. Then, there is this case,,,.
My Opinions: I think this was the best in the series.
The book is about physical and emotional abuse. It is about secrets, lies, and gossip, and it's about murder. It is also about friendship and family and love. The menopause issue was too real.
The plot was really good, and there were a number of twists. I liked how the chapters alternated between characters.
Even though I have not always liked the relationship between Gina and her boss, the emotions were quite real, and I'm actually looking forward to where this may yet end up. I really like the team members.
I'm definitely looking forward to the next one!

This author has done it again, this maybe the twelve book but it has not lost it's edge. Goes straight to the top of the must read pile. Everything about this book is excellent. I love the main characters, the plots are always clever and original and her latest offering does not disappoint. I was completely immersed in the story that was unfolding and only came up for breath after I had turned the last page. Packed to the rafters with tension and full of heart stopping moments and so many twists and turns, with an ending I never saw coming and left me speechless. Another MUST READ from one of my favourite and very talented authors and another five star addition to this gripping and very addictive series. Loved it!!!!!!
Someone buy Carla Kovach a drink because she's nailed it once again! This is one of my favourite thus far. A tight friendship group of mums are all deverstated when their friend Billie is murdered in her home. With so many secrets in duch a small group of friends, detective Gina Hunt has her suspicions of who us behind the murders......
Four-year-old Kayden has been sitting alone on the little patch of tired grass outside his house for hours. His cheeks are wet with tears as he waits for his mother’s warm embrace. But she’ll never arrive to pick up her darling boy. She’ll never be seen again…
Book 12 in the Gina Harte detective series produces another wonderful read. I have read this series since its inception and to me it has just got better and better. Gina's character has grown as the books progress and so has her role as a detective, she is determined to provide justice for the victims who she genuinely cares about and will fight to lock up all offenders. Full of tension and suspence, these past paced thrillers show that Carla Kovach has proven very successful in bringing her stories to life and keeping the reader fully engaged from the first page, after 12 books there has to be something to be said about the quality of her work. This is a series I will continue to read and hope that the books continue to provide the quality of enjoyment I have come to expect. I feel there is still a lot of room for Gina to grow and look forward to following her further journey as a detective.
Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for an advanced copy of the book in exchange for an honest, unbiased review.
I don't have much free time at the moment, working full-time and being a full-time carer to elderly parents to boot and to be honest I haven't read much this year, but as soon as Carla releases a book, I'm on it like fid in a sweetshop.
Love Gina Harte, this series just gets better and better.
A heartbreaking read that begins with the discovery of a young mother's body inside her house while her four-year-old son Kayden is sitting outside in the garden.
Once the investigation begins it soon becomes obvious that there are multiple suspects who could have killed Billie, including family members as well as a recently emerged ex, Hayden's father.
Another gripping, page-turner in this great series.
I wasn't hooked by this. In fact, it took a while for me to get interested in the story. But once the murder was discovered and lies started tumbling out of everyone's mouths I was intrigued. This was pretty good for a detective novel.
Don't you just love a book that keeps you guessing throughout? Her Deadly Promises is one of those books. I thought I had the mystery figured out several times and wow was I wrong. This is an exceptional book that kept me reading well into the night. I love the Gina Harte series that Carla Kovach has created and look forward to the next book.
Her Deadly Promise opens with a young boy left outside to play. When his friend has to go, he sits on the curb as his mom told him not to come back in the house until she told him to. Unfortunately, she will never get to tell her son to come in as Billie has been murdered. Who would want to kill a young mother? Why would she tell her son not to come home until she said to? Why did her son hide at night inside a wardrobe? Things are happening inside that house, but what?
Billie's friends are meeting with their young children to have a drink and a chat while the kids play. Billie is missing and they think it's because she had a migraine. They assume this because her curtains were drawn and the house looked quiet. Little did they know that while they were enjoying the afternoon their friend was being murdered. The group of friends all have secrets. Are any of them hiding something dangerous? Could any of them be involved in what happened to Billie?
There's so much going on with all of the friends and their families that you'll have ideas about who could have done it and other things. Keep the guesses coming because I was blindsided at the end! What an awesome book! I rate Her Deadly Promise 5 stars with my highest recommendation. I'd like to thank NetGalley and Bookouture for an advanced copy in exchange for a fair review. #HerDeadlyPromise #NetGalley
Her Deadly Promise by Carla Kovach is the twelfth book in the Gina Harte series. I picked up this series with The Liar's House (book 4) and I also thoroughly enjoyed books five through to eleven.
The author has written a really clever and fascinating story with a layered plot that drew me in right from the very first page. Set in the fictional Midlands town of Cleevesford, in this twelfth tense tale, the stakes are high and Gina needs her team more than ever, though she is very focused on her job.
Feisty and down-to-earth, Gina is a brilliant Detective Inspector. DCI Chris Briggs makes his contribution and DS Jacob Driscoll is Gina's partner in crime. Well plotted and suspense-filled from beginning to end, the tension is palpable throughout. The great pacing by Carla Kovach also had a hand in my huge enjoyment of the story. If you love a good detective series and psychological thriller with plenty of twists and a very dark feel, then Her Deadly Promise is for you. Very highly recommended. 😊
I received a complimentary copy of this novel at my request from Bookouture via NetGalley. This review is my own unbiased opinion.
This book was amazing! Although there are a few things that bothered me.
First of all I’d like to say that this story was amazing! It kept me on the edge of my seat, guessing back and forth about who the killer could be but none of it prepared me for who the actual killer is. That is what makes a murder mystery perfect in my opinion so that definitely hit all the right spots for me.
The things that bothered me is mostly the way it was written. 9/10 times it looked like the story took place in the 1900’s because of how they talked but then they started talking about TikTok etc and it just made me a bit confused.
A domestic thriller queen! This latest entry in the series is fantastic and not to be missed. While this is the twelfth entry in this series, it still somehow remains fresh and unique with each mystery and entry offering something different that is just as addictive. I am diving into the next book.
Honestly, just when the last in this series was the best thus far along comes the next case for Gina Harte. And this one HER DEADLY PROMISE is one of the best yet. Instead of serial killers or a local nutter on the loose, this one is filled with all the usual domestic suspense tropes such as secrets, lies, deception, betrayal...you name it, this has it! And one of the reasons this is one of my favourite series is that it is not all filled with the procedural side bogging the reader down with facts, statistics and the holy trinity of murder cases. Instead we hear other voices added to the mix as we try to unravel the truth.
Admittedly, I have tired of a lot of procedurals as I find them too samey and a but too textbook...I have but a bare minimum of crime thriller series that feature procedurals that I still read. And this is one of them.
This story begins with a secret. And secrets are something we can share our closest friends, someone we can confide in or have a shoulder to cry on. At least, that's what friends Billie, Nadia, Meera and Candice thought...until one of their secrets gets out and is soon the hot topic of gossip amongst others at the school gates with fingers pointed and careless whispers spread. And then one of them is found murdered in a pool of blood on her kitchen floor while her 5 year old son sat outside on the step waiting for his mother to call him in. A mother he will never see again.
Enter DI Gina Harte.
As menopause rears its ugly head whilst the country is in the grip of a stifling heatwave, Gina finds herself struggling with her the flurry of flushes at the most inconvenient of times as well as the breakdown of her budding relationship with Briggs. She's finding it hard to move on but as she arrives at the scene and is confronted with the sight of the tearful young boy, Gina puts her problems aside and focuses on the case at hand, determined to find a young mother's killer.
As the investigation progresses, the suspects are in abundance. And Billie, the murdered woman, had many secrets...but would someone kill her for them? But she isn't the only one with secrets as more and more of them come bubbling to the surface in the form of husbands and supposed friends. But would one of them kill to keep their own secret from coming to light?
As the plot thickens, will there be another victim in an attempt to keep the secrets and lies from surfacing? Will Gina find the killer before it's too late? And will she be able to move past the Briggs-shaped elephant-in-the-room in her heart and her head?
HER DEADLY PROMISE is such an intricate tale of secrets, lies, deception and betrayal that is a complex web so intriguing to read you won't be able to put it down! Gina used to frustrate me no end in the earlier books but she has grown along the way as did her relationship with Briggs. But now she finds herself alone with her only confidante in someone else's arms. Briggs, who knows all her foibles, flaws and secrets. And now she has menopause to deal with on top of that and a flipping heatwave!
I read this book in one day as it was so engrossing I was completely immersed within the story. I admit to figuring out Billie's secret almost from the beginning as well as the identity of the killer, despite the numerous red herrings Kovach put in our way to mislead us. And I must admit to wanting Gina to find another face on the hook-up sight she was perusing...I won't say who, but oh how I wish!!
My only complaint is the cliffhanger ending. NOOOOO! How could you do that to us? I want to know what happens now! But I guess I'll have to wait till Book 13.
Overall, a spectacular addition to one of my most favourite series.
I would like to thank #CarlaKovach, #NetGalley and #Bookouture for an ARC of #HerDeadlyPromise in exchange for an honest review.
Spoiler-free summary: I’ve devoured nearly all the books in this series and usually fly through them with excitement, They're quick reads, full fun characters, and with twisty plots. But this one just didn’t hook me. The pacing felt off, the characters didn’t land for me, and the plot lacked the punch I’ve come to expect from this author.
So yeah not a win for me. Will I read the next one? Probably, out of loyalty and curiosity. But this one felt like a miss in an otherwise bingeable series.
Carla Kovach once again demonstrates her storytelling prowess in "Her Deadly Promise," the twelfth installment in the series. This gripping thriller takes readers on a rollercoaster ride through the intricacies of friendships, secrets, and the haunting consequences of choices made.
The story revolves around Billie Reeves, a character so compelling that she practically leaps off the pages. As we delve into her world, we witness the unraveling of shallow friendships and the fragility of human relationships. Kovach's ability to dissect the intricacies of these connections is nothing short of brilliant.
One of the most poignant aspects of the narrative is the portrayal of Kayden, Billie's son. Readers can't help but feel a deep sense of empathy for this character, whose life is intricately woven into the story's fabric. The emotional depth added to the narrative through Kayden's perspective is a testament to Kovach's mastery of character development.
The plot itself is a tightly woven web of suspense and intrigue. Kovach keeps readers guessing until the very end, expertly crafting twists and turns that will leave you breathless. The pacing is spot-on, ensuring that you'll be glued to the pages from start to finish.
In "Her Deadly Promise," Carla Kovach reaffirms her status as a master of the thriller genre. Her storytelling is not only suspenseful but also emotionally resonant, making this book a must-read for anyone who craves a riveting tale with a genuine heart.
Prepare yourself for a thrilling journey filled with secrets, betrayals, and the enduring power of human connections. "Her Deadly Promise" is a testament to Carla Kovach's talent, and it's sure to leave a lasting impression on readers.
Thank you NetGalley, Bookouture & Carla Kovach for the arc.
When a young single mother with a dark secret is murdered, it's up to DI Gina Harte and her team to find the killer. It is the twelfth book in the Detective Gina Harte series, but the first I've read. I had no problems connecting with Gina and other members of her team, especially DC Paula Wyre.
I really enjoyed the author's style of writing. Many of the chapters are told from Detective Harte's point-of-view and those chapters read like a police procedural novel. The other chapters are told from the various witnesses and suspects and those chapters are more like a domestic drama. There are friends, lovers, secrets, betrayals, and some pretty despicable characters in the book, but plenty to like about the story. Gina has her own drama since her boss is also her ex-boyfriend, but she tries to keep her personal life separate from the job as best as she can. I like the way Gina and her team keep with it to separate the truth from the lies in order to solve the case. The book gets off to a great start and there are few different plot twists as the story progresses, I admit to experiencing some confusion in the middle part of the book. However, things get better again and the ending of this suspenseful novel is unexpected. I would definitely read further books in this series.
Thank you to NetGalley and Bookouture for the advance copy of this ebook. It was provided to me at no cost, but my review is voluntary and unbiased.
I have to admit I never read the series.. But this was such a terrific policy procedural book. It had all the elements needed for a great story. I might have to go back and read the others at some point too.
Thanks to the author, the publisher and NetGalley for an early release of this book.
Love this series and this one definitely did not disappoint. I did not figure this one out - there were so many possible outcomes, I can honestly say, I wasn't expecting this one.
I do have to say, I understand that in the last couple of books, the author has shown a very different side of Gina. She's definitely showing her with less confidence, needy and more vulnerability. I can't say that I like it. I get it, but I don't like it. I hope to see her find her confidence and sure-footing again in the next one. This one finished with a cliffhanger and I want more!
Thank you #netgalley and #bookouture for the eARC.
Another brilliant book in this series. I’ve read all the books so far and they’re getting better and better. Gina is struggling with her feelings for Briggs but he’s making it clear he’s moved on so she needs to learn to cope with this. On top of this a young mother’s body is found in her home by her neighbour, while her little boy plays innocently outside. Gina and the team start the investigation with a few people they need to speak to and the deeper they get in the case, they realise that more than one of the victim’s friends are hiding something. This is a gripping crime thriller that I really enjoyed. Thanks to Bookouture and NetGalley for the opportunity to read this book.
Friends are those we laugh with, share secrets with, or who provide us with a shoulder to cry on, or so Nadia, Billie, Meera, and Candice thought until one of them is murdered. Detective Gina Harte is struggling with her private life, her health, and the failure of her usual coping skills, but the sight of a tearful four-year-old waiting for a mother he will never see again spurs her on as she begins working on her latest case.
With baking hot weather and an uncomfortable working environment hindering the investigation Gina finds her focus changing from family to family as secrets begin to surface. When there is a second attack however it becomes apparent none of the friends or their families will survive their ordeal unscathed.
Her Deadly Promise is, amazingly, the twelfth in this excellent series and had me switching culprit continually whilst enjoying every twist and turn. I also enjoyed the characterisation of the four friends and how different they all were. None or all of them could have held the key to the whole thing and their interwoven stories were entertaining and exciting. The secondary storyline concerning Gina's messy home and work life was woven expertly throughout the investigation and will, it seems, continue to effect her for a while yet.
I was able to read an advanced copy of this book thanks to NetGalley and the publishers but the opinions expressed are my own. I thoroughly enjoyed this and happily recommend it.
DI Gina Harte is back and not 100% herself struggling with her health, a heat wave, and the breakdown of her relationship with Briggs. She's a bit of a mess, and her colleagues are starting to notice.
But when single mum Billie is stabbed to death and Gina is confronted with her grieving four-year-old son. She's determined to put all her problems aside and find Billie's killer.
However, the suspects are plenty. As Billie had lots of secrets the biggest being she was working as a prostitute to make ends meet and provide for her son Kayden.
But she isn't the only one with secrets as her sons father Shaun is back on the scene. Then there's her lover Nathan who also happens to be her sister Serena's boyfriend.
Not to mention her three friends Meera, Nadia, and Candice. Who have plenty of secrets of their own. And one of them made sure every parent in the playground knew how Billie was making her money.
Yet, why would any of them really want to kill the vivacous Billie?
That's what Gina can't figure out. Until another friend is targeted and more secrets are revealed. Ones that hit too close to home for an already on edge Gina.
And with plenty of twists and a killer I didn't expect. This was a cracking read. That I enjoyed a lot. And one I would happily recommend to others.
**I was kindly provided with an ARC via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review**
Her Deadly Promise certainly gives you lots of twists and turns! So many characters So many secrets So many lies DI Gina Harte has to unravel so many clues when called out to a murder of a young mother. Each time she is getting the feeling she’s found something relevant to the case, it doesn’t seem to go anywhere. Will she be able to solve this very involved investigation? Gina has personal issues going on within the story to include menopause problems and getting over the ending of her relationship with someone she still is in love with. With reading Her Deadly Promise you will be embarking on a domestic, psychological thriller of a ride! I could not figure out who the killer was until the last pages of the book. Though this is part of a series. I do believe it can be read as a standalone. I do recommend reading all the books in the series. That way you can get to know Gina’s backstory. Thank you to NetGalley, Bookouture and the author for the opportunity to read this book for my honest review. All opinions expressed are my own.
The author created a fabulous series starring DI Gina Harte. This is book 12 and I am not ready to say goodbye at all. I am looking forward to the next 12 (or preferably more 😉 ) books.
There is not only DI Harte, of course. Without her amazing team she would not be able to put so many baddies behind bars, nor find justice for so many victims. Her partner in crime is Jacob and together they can count on some recurrent police officers. And then there is Chris Briggs. He is the boss. I loved what he did for Gina Harte, but at the moment he is not my favorite person by far.
Gina has to deal with a brutal murder and a lot of lying and cheating people. The killer really knows how to hide their tracks, but not good enough to fool Gina and her team.
Apart from this complicated case, Gina also has some private matters on her mind. Will she deal with them as efficiently as she does with the criminals?
A very entertaining story that had me captivated. I never saw this coming and those are often the best stories where the author can fool you all the way through :). 5 stars
Woah, this had me gripped. I love the Gina Harte series anyway and this is the best one yet!
This sees Gina investigating the murder of a young single mum, Billie Reeves. It emerges that she has been sleeping with men for money and having an affair with her sister’s fiancé. When Billie’s friends and neighbours are interviewed, it becomes apparent there are more guilty secrets in the neighbourhood that someone doesn’t want to become known.
Gina has her own problems too, she is suffering from bad menopausal sweats, mood swings. On top of that, her boss Briggs, with whom she had a close friendship and a romance that never got off the ground, has gotten into a serious relationship with another woman, which Gina is somewhat envious and jealous about.
This book ends on a cliffhanger which will definitely have me looking out for the next book!
Thanks must go to the publisher and Netgalley for kindly giving me an arc of this story to read and review.
This is book 12 in the Gina Harte series but can easily be read as a stand alone. I've not read them all or in order and although reading the previous books in the series will give you more background on the main characters, it isn't necessary to enjoy this one.
I could not put this book down! It was such a gripping read. It had plenty of twists and while the focus was on the murder of single mother Billie, we also go through the personal issues with Detective Gina Harte that are very relatable!
I'm a fan of Carla Kovach's writing. She always keeps me gripped to my seat and wanting more!
#HerDeadlyPromise #NetGalley Another excellent read in the Gina Harte series. Perfectly capable of being read as a stand alone but reading previous books in the series does give you more background on the main characters. Dark and Gripping, I could not put this book down! plenty of twists and turns that kept me changing my mind on who the culprit was. A great read and I am moving straight on to the next in this series!
This is one of my favorite detective series. And if you are wondering, they can all be read as stand alones. I have fallen behind and have not read the entire series and had no trouble following this one.
This is a fast paced novel that I did not want to put down. I love the main set of characters and always enjoy catching up on their personal lives as they work the case. In this one Gina is not her usual confidant self as she is struggling with her personal life and health. There is such a good balance between the case and her personal life.
As with any good mystery, everyone has a secret they are trying to keep hidden. There are many twists and turns along the way and a conclusion I did not see coming. And I don’t know how I missed reading the entire series as they always seem to end on a cliffhanger that has you clamoring for the next book.
I highly recommend this installment. Actually the whole series! I need to go back and read my missing books.
