I received an ARC of this book in exchange for my honest review.

J. Ross bursts onto the fantasy scene with "Awakening," a debut novel that immediately captivates. From the very first chapters, I found myself completely sucked into Adanya's world, a testament to Ross's compelling storytelling. This isn't just a gentle introduction; it's a full-fledged I have arrived on this fantasy platform.

What truly shines in "Awakening" is the nuanced portrayal of Adanya's journey. Ross expertly weaves together her present-day struggles with the unfolding history of her family, creating a narrative that is both engaging and deeply satisfying.

Witnessing Adanya's growth, both in her growing powers and her understanding of her past, is a masterclass in character development. The pacing is chef's kiss, allowing me, the reader, to absorb the complex history and emotional depth of the story without feeling overwhelmed.

Ross masterfully balances the essential elements of a captivating fantasy novel. The delicate dance between romance, the thrill of magical discovery, the warmth of friendship, the sting of betrayal, and the heightened drama creates a truly immersive experience. This isn't just a fantasy novel; it's a tapestry of human emotions woven into a fantastical world.

As a new reader to the fantasy genre, I can confidently say that J. Ross has ignited a passion within me. "Awakening" has left me craving more, eager to explore the depths of this world and the future works of this talented author. If this is what Ross delivers in a debut, I can only imagine the heights to which her writing will soar.

Mark your calendars! "Awakening" releases on April 1st, and preorders are available now at jrossauthor.net. Don't miss the chance to experience this remarkable debut – it's a journey you won't soon forget.

I received this book as an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

Ms. J.Ross delivered a beautiful story filled with magic and character growth for her debut novel.

I was immediately hooked by the introduction where the main character, Adanya, brings us into a gripping event—she’s woken up from a 70 year magic-induced sleep.

The story is presented in an alternation between present and past events where we get to meet the characters of Adanya’s past and we slowly learn about the events that unfolded.

One of my absolutely favorite things was the absolute **chef’s kiss** portrayal of the male characters in the story. From Adanya’s love to her father figure to her partners during battle, they are all supportive, empathetic and well-rounded without detracting from Adanya and her power.

If you’re looking for a magical story about growth and with a diverse set of characters—pick Awakening.

Some of my favorite highlights:

Quote to sum up the magic and growth- “Everything was still there, rooted beneath. The ashes just helped everything to grow stronger.”

Quote to sum up my aforementioned green flag men-
“Do you want my opinion, my advice, or nothing?” he asked.

Amazing. I am not a fantasy girlie, but I kept seeing this one pop up on social media, so I requested my public library to buy it and they did it. I was hooked from the first chapter and I never wanted to put it down. What an incredible story with incredible characters!! So, so good!!

I’ll start this review by saying that Awakening has turned out to be one of my all-time favorite fantasy books. This story is unique – not because of twists and turns, but because of the way it is told.

Awakening is hard to define in terms of genre expectations. It has all the elements of an epic fantasy book – high magic, an epic scale conflict, monsters and magic. But the story itself focuses on small moments, human relationships, the beauty and the flaws of people. It could be considered romantasy, as there’s a love story at the heart of this tale. Yet, Awakening has a double timeline narrative, and while the romance plot influences the present, it unfolds in the past.

Talking about the double timeline, this is an amazing aspect of the story. It begins with the sorceress Adanya awakening from a spell-induced coma… far later than planned. She discovers that the world has changed, and not for the better. The story switches back and forth between the past and the present, and with every piece we learn of Adanya’s history, everything falls into place. Awakening unfolds like a blossoming flower into a beautiful story of human connection. It shows the impact of abusive relationships, mistrust and betrayal as much as love, support, understanding and friendship. Seeing Adanya grow, heal and find her strength is a journey worth reading about. It is also amazing to see how she always stays kind and gentle, even when she is forced into war.

The author J. Ross has created a unique and vivid world, an immersive story and lovable characters that will have a place in my heart forever. Awakening is like a rare gemstone, and I’m very happy I found this beautiful treasure.

If you’re looking for an emotional and gentle fantasy novel that’s still full of tension and conflict, I highly recommend Awakening by J. Ross. I’m giving it a wholehearted 5/5 stars.

“All of these people’s lives will be in my hands, and the last time that happened, they were all slaughtered.”

Awakening by J. Ross is a magical fantasy tale following Adanya, a sorceress. And this is my review as an ARC reader uninfluenced by any magical spell.

The story starts with Adanya waking up from her sleep after 70 years of magically-induced sleep. She finds her kingdom destroyed, and Nehanda (an elder sorcerer who used to be her mentor) is ruling the continent, killing everyone who dared oppose her.

Now, Adanya has to go on to gather all her magical powers, while looking for her loved ones who could assist her with their magic, to restore world peace.

The book has a dual timeline, and it keeps going back and forth between Adanya’s past and present life. It shows, bit by bit, how she is developing herself as a capable magic-wielder from an insecure little girl. Loved the different symbolisms used to portray that.

Awakening is really an immersive and emotional story. Also, the world-building was vivid. You can almost feel the heat/cold and see the dry/green as if it’s a movie

Adanya’s character development is praise-worthy. But I feel it also slowed the story in some parts. The scenes around her self-doubts felt repetitive. However, I know that they were all necessary, considering her tough upbringing and oppressive training.

It’s a story of resilience. If you love dark fantasy with a strong female character, Awakening might be an excellent read for you.

This book wasn’t what I was expecting, and I mean that in the best way possible! As an avid fantasy reader (who usually reads intense/emotionally heavy fantasies) I was blown away by how beautifully gentle this book was to read. J. Ross creates a FMC who finds power and strength through kindness and compassion, and who never compromises her gentleness for her power. Everything Adanya (the FMC) is, is rooted in her unyieldingly gentle nature. Is this on excellent work of fantasy with a unique and interesting magic system? Yes! But more importantly (to me at least), this work was a healing journey. In a genera where FMCs are usually surrounded by people they can’t trust and who let them down, Awakening is filled with found family that offer undying support and love simply because they care. However, don’t think that Ross doesn’t give readers plot twists rooted in betrayal and hurt, she absolutely does, but she never leaves you or Andanya alone in the darkness. If you’re fan of tropes like found family, power in kindness, self-discovery, epic betrayal, and dual past/present timelines, you’ll love Awakening! (ARC review)

This book wasn't what I expected and I mean that in the best way possible. It was also an incredibly difficult read at times because the grief our main character, Adanya, experiences is so raw and palpable that it tore at my heart while I was reading.

This book has some "more mature" Avatar: the Last Airbender vibes--some of the magic was similar and just like in ATLA, there's an amazing found family, an adventure for the main character to learn their powers in the hopes of taking out the "big bad," and the weight of being "the chosen one." So, if you're looking for something similar but want characters who are a little more mature, I think this would be a great read for you!

I'm incredibly impressed that this is the author's first book and I can't wait to see what else she has in store in the future! This is a fantastic read for any fantasy fan and I'll be recommending it to anyone who's looking for something new and wonderfully written!

I received an early copy of this book, and I am leaving this review voluntarily. All opinions stated are my own.

I received this book as an ARC from book funnel. Here’s my honest review; I loved this story! 😍

If you’ve ever been manipulated by someone to doubt yourself, or just struggle with impostor syndrome you’ll identify with Andanya’s struggles.

The world and magic system J. Ross created is so imaginative, I was literally dreaming about elemental powers while I was reading this book. But J. Ross also infuses the book with people to combat Andanya’s inner torment and that is where the magic in the book really shines. The characters and specifically Andanya’s development as our MFC was remarkable.

I really enjoyed how the story developed through the dual perspective of flashbacks and the present. That can feel gimmicky OR heighten the sense of anxiety for what’s to come, but I felt like they just strengthened and built the story out. We learned what she was up against, as Andanya was figuring out how to break free.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
🌶️

Awakening is the debut novel from author J. Ross and is a beautiful way to come onto the book scene.

Adanya’s tale is one of heroism, bravery, and love that lasts. Through the story, the reader gets to see Adanya grow as she navigates love, heartache, and betrayal. J. Ross’ writing makes the story flow from start to finish, and the world building is exciting. She brings a new magical world and characters to life in an imaginative way.

I enjoyed reading through Adanya’s story and seeing how her character grew. The dual timelines were easy to slip in and out of and gave the background you need in a creative back and forth. The elemental magic used in the novel was a new take on magic that I really liked.

If you like a strong FMC who has to step up to be the hero for everyone else, you are going to love reading Adanya’s tale!

This book was an emotional rollercoaster. Adanya’s story is not just about magic, it’s about resilience, trust, and the crushing weight of betrayal. When she realizes the person she once cared for now rules with unimaginable power, the conflict becomes so much more personal than your typical “hero vs villain.” I really appreciated how Ross didn’t make her instantly powerful again; instead, we see her struggle with doubt and weakness before rediscovering her strength. The intergenerational aspect was fascinating, too. Seeing her connect with the descendants of her friends made the story feel alive and rooted in history. By the end, I was fully invested in Adanya’s journey to reclaim her place in a changed world.

“Sometimes people are only meant to be in our lives for a season, then we have to let them go”

After reading this story, you wouldn’t have guessed that this is a debut novel!
5 star world building, characters, and leading you though the story with crumbs of information to keep you hooked.

I was confused by the jumps in past timeline for a few chapters but as i kept going I started to understand why it was placed the way it was. J.Ross is strategic in information as she develops the story. We are are learning the why and when of every situation that has got us to that current moment.

A beautifully written story! Best writing I've seen in a while!

I had a lot of fun with this book! I was hooked from the first line. The storyline was good and I enjoyed the switching between Adanya's past and present. I found the magic system to be unique enough to be a nice change of pace.

Some of the writing form felt a bit too repetitive to me (____ said ____ly), but that could just be a me thing.

I did love the characters as well. Both the villain and hero are powerful women?! Sign me up. The side characters were also developed enough and lovable that I didn't feel like they were just there as plot devices.

I am looking forward to reading anything else that J Ross publishes in the future!

Awakening is a new favorite book of mine! Everything was amazing to the story line to the description and to the characters development. I loved seeing Adanya grow as well as her confidence while reading and just truly got lost in the story. I love Miss J. Ross’s use of flashbacks and she is going to be a new auto buy author of mine! I can’t wait for more of her work and as soon as a physical copy is ready I will be getting a book shelf trophy! “I’ve always believed in you, and I’m not the only one.” 5 Stars!

This book has everything. EVERYTHING.
First of all, I cam across it on TikTok, I believe a post from the author and immediately bought it. Because, duh, cover!
As gorgeous is the cover, the more gorgeous is the story within its pages.
Adanya is a Sage, her magic allowing her to feel all the pain across her land and due to the events that lead to the destraction of her realm, she is awaken 70 years in the future.
I adore her so much.❤️
The book shows her growth in the best possible way and her will to find her loved one is bigger than her power itself.

Hands down one of the top three books I've read all year! This was such a pleasant surprise. I caught wind of it by word of mouth and decided to give it a try. I couldn't wait to find free moments in my day to read more of this story, and I was so sad when it ended. J.Ross has written a captivating story that kept me engaged the whole way, wondering how everything would get resolved. She jumps between timelines and masterfully weaves all the moving parts together. I definitely recommend reading this one!

I loved this book! 🖤

It follows Adanaya, a remarkably gifted Sage betrayed by someone closest to her, who wakes to a fallen kingdom she must reunite.

There’s a warmth to the writing, a thread of hope woven through every page. I especially loved the dual, time-shifting narrative, and Adanaya herself: a heroine who proves there’s strength in softness, just what we need today.

Wonderfully done, J. Ross!

It was exciting, emotional, and empowering and I absolutely loved it! Thank you to the author for the arc and the chance to review this ❤️

J Ross creates an immersive world with a back and forth to the past. Watching the character's banter then and now is amazing for the sorcerers.

I strongly suggest reading this book if you're looking for a good read that also delves into the topic of grief.

This is an ARC review. I am thankful to J. Ross for giving me the opportunity to read this book ahead of release. Awakening follows the story of Adanya, a sorceress with Empath powers.

As we follow Adanya on her journey, we see her face monsters, an evil sorceress and tremendous loss.

This book has me engaged right from the beginning. Learning about Adanya's past while seeing her navigate her present was marvelous. I didn't want the book to end.

I highly recommend reading Awakening.

Pure Magic - An Unforgettable 5 - Star Read!

Just finished Awakening by J. Ross, and WOW - this book was everything! Think Maleficent, Snow White, Harry Potter, and Once Upon a Time all wrapped into one.

From the first page, I was hooked & couldn’t put it down. The world-building? Immersive and magical. The magic system? Breathtaking. The main character? A force to be reckoned with. This story takes you on an emotional rollercoaster filled with power, betrayal, and self-discovery. And the message woven into it? Absolutely beautiful.

This book is more than just fantasy-it’s about strength, resilience, and realizing your worth. The emotions had me tearing up the whole damn time, and I know this is one I’ll be rereading.

J. Ross did her thing with this debut of hers. If you love dark fantasy with a badass female lead, READ THIS!

I’ll start off by saying this definitely did surprise me. Adanya had realistic character growth in my opinion, it takes awhile to become a stronger version of yourself after being pushed down for so long so I did like seeing the transition. I really liked seeing all the different ways sorcerers used their magic and the creativity behind how and what they used it for! If not for some scenes, I’d have said this book was YA as it reads a bit younger but there’s nothing wrong with that. I do think some things went a bit too easy for her at times and she was coddled by a lot of the people around her. All in all, I enjoyed it. Thankful to the author for gifting me a copy of her book.

The book was a fun and easy read. The world was easy to understand and the pacing was great. Not very much spice (which was fine for me but wanted to put it out there). The male love interest was a breath of fresh air. He was pure golden retriever and was emotionally intelligent. I connected with the FMC… she had some serious imposter syndrome and doubted herself. I rounded up from 4.75 stars for the review. It wasn’t quite a 5 star read for me but definitely a solid fantasy story.
